Welcome back Aggies to another exciting and fun filled semester. This year, our staff
is excited to be bringing you news stories and events that are happening around the Greek
Community. We encourage all of you to get involved with the newsletter this year. This publication is a great tool for Greek Life to bring in some good PR not just as individual chapters,
but as a whole. So lets kick off the year right and show this campus what Greek Life is really
about.

Beating Breast Cancer and the Lobos Too
By: Courtney Lopez
The UNM vs. NMSU
game is quickly approaching
and every year the sororities
and fraternities at both universities do a canned food
drive as a community service
project and competition.
This year the UNM vs.
NMSU game also happens to
be the Pink Game, so we
decided to do something
different. Instead of holding
a canned food drive, we are
competitively selling pink tshirts to raise money to do-
nate to Cowboys for Cancer
Research.
Make sure to purchase a
shirt and support the Aggies
The design of the t-shirt is and Breast Cancer Awarethe same at both universities, ness Month. Let’s beat the
but the color of the t-shirt is Lobos!!
different. We are selling the
t-shirts everyday
at Corbett and Imall for ten dollars. The proceeds will be donated on behalf of
the NMSU Greek
Life at half-time of
the game.

The Battle on the Beach
By: Daryl Haley
On Saturday, October 2, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity
held its 1st Annual Battle on the Beach: Volleyball Tournament.
Both turn out and participation were strong and it was a great
success!
Members of the Greek Community, NMSU students,
members of the Las Cruces community and military personnel
had all competed against each other in the tournament. At the
end of the tournament, the winning team was the Flying Penguins—NMSU students, both men and women!
Contributions from Kappa Sigma’s event totaled over
$4,000!! It will be donated to the fraternity’s philanthropy, The
Military Heroes Campaign.
Splashing for Sight
By: Emily Meek
On Saturday, September 19th, the New Mexico
State University Eta Lambda
Chapter of Delta Gamma
Fraternity for Women held
their annual
Anchor Splash
philanthropy event.
Both fraternities and
sororities competed in this
year’s event, a first for the Eta
Lambda chapter.
Teams coached by DG's
spent the week participating
in Mr. and Mrs. Anchor Splash,
Penny Wars, and Anchor
Splash itself which included a
swimming event, a dance, and
synchronized swimming.
For the fraternities, Sigma
Alpha Epsilon took first place,
Lambda Chi Alpha took second,
and third place was awarded to
Sigma Chi.
For the sororities, Zeta Tau
Alpha won first,
and Alpha Xi
Delta took second. In this event,
Delta Gamma
raised $1600 for
Service for Sight!
Thanks to everyone for their
wonderful support. It is greatly
appreciated!

Watermelon Bust
By: Jonathan Goke
On Sunday, October 3, Lambda Chi Alpha
held their annual philanthropic event, Watermelon Bust.
Each fall about 250 participants and 8 tons
of watermelons are used in a variety of
events as a competition amongst the sororities.
This year there was a tie between
Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Xi Delta. Each
Sorority was given $150 to go towards
their philanthropy.
The remaining proceeds will go
towards Lambda Chi's philanthropy, The
North American Food Drive.
A Real Greek Hero
By; Marcus Martinez
From Hercules to Achilles,
stories of heroes in
Greek Mythology
have been told
throughout the generations. Recently
there was a hero not
found in the stories,
but in real life. For
privacy reasons, the
names of these individuals will not be
mentioned, nor will
their chapter affiliations.
Last week,
an incident occurred
in front of the Activity Center. A
young woman, riding her bicycle
to the AC, was hit by a car. The
driver was reported to have been
attempting to slow down, but
did not stop in time.
Across the street was
a member of the Greek Community who had witnessed the
incident. The Greek Life member ran to the injured victim
and attempted to ensure that
she was alright until proper
medical authorities arrived on
scene.
“The impact looked
unreal due to the fact that I had
never seen it before.” said the
young man.
As an individual, this
young man has demonstrated
chivalry and performed an act
of heroism on this campus. As
a Greek Community we are
called to follow in these ideals;
to always help those in need.
This act is a good demonstration of how we can accomplish
all this.
The rider was fine
with just some mild cuts and
bruises.
The young man told
me “There are people here at
the school who are willing to
help when help is needed. Aggie pride!”
So please, Aggies,
remember our creed. We are
always there to help those in
need. Never forget our values.
