A MESSAGE
FROM RUTH,
OUR CEO
If there is any lesson to be learnt from last year, it is that conservation is about
people. The best scientiic minds, the best policies and the best technologies amount
to magniicent results when combined with positive partnerships with a higher goal at
heart.
Last year science, policy and technology
came together, underpinned by exactly the kind
of rocksteady partnerships that achieve big wins�
The formation of The Asian Elephant Alliance,
which saw 5 conservation NGOs unite behind
the monumental ambition to secure all 100 of
India’s elephant corridors, represented a giant
leap forward in our goal to shore up the future
for this iconic species� £20m is a big number
and the focus now is achieving a match by
Corporate India, using Modi’s 2% Corporate
Social Responsibility rule�
The efforts of just a couple of hundred people
moved the needle for Asia’s elephants in 2015�
The creative explosions in artists' studios and
fashion house loors saw the launch of an
intoxicating leet of elephant-infused rickshaws,
securing front-page coverage and a war chest of
funds to power the projects on the ground� And
that positive, collaborative effort was more than
matched by a team of 80 intrepid rickshaw
racers, led by Ben Elliot and his Quintessentially
group, our steadfast supporters at Selfridges and
the generosity of our new friends at Maclaren�
A partnership with the global art event, Elephant
Parade, was also signed which will enable Elephant
Family to roll out events in both the USA and
India and shape the messaging of parades
planned for cities such as Jakarta, Beijing and
Chiang Mai, to best serve Asia’s elephants�
Great people live on through their work�
With every child that is able to play in elephant
habitats without any threat or danger, with every
single crop that is harvested in its entirety and
with every magniicent elephant that is able to
walk uninterrupted without conlict, surely our
late founder, Mark Shand, lives on today�
We looked to our friends in Africa, most notably
Space for Giants and Save the Elephants, to
harvest learnings on both continents and increase
impact everywhere� As I write, we are exploring
how to apply Save the Elephants' innovative work
with Google Maps to the Asian context – if it can
be achieved, it will be a hugely powerful aide to
Vivek Menon’s corridor master plan and enable
conservation groups everywhere to powerfully
demonstrate exactly where migratory routes collide
with development plans and ind solutions for all.

forgotten species from extinction. We create safe homes for
elephants and people by funding projects that enable humans
and the biggest land mammal to live closer together than ever.

THE BIG PICTURE SOLUTION:
ELEPHANT
CORRIDORS
Asian elephant populations have been reduced by 90% over the past century. Even
more worryingly, those that remain have been squeezed into pockets of forest that
are 20 times smaller than they used to be.
Surrounded by a burgeoning human population,
Asian elephants have to contend with the
demand of rapidly developing nations� These
include the spread of settlements, plantations,
mines, railways, and irrigation canals that have
carved up former habitats�
Wildlife reserves that compete with other priorities
and exclude people are no longer the solution: now
the highest priority is securing wildlife corridors
– the traditional migration routes of elephants –
to maintain the vital connections between these
reserves and other forest fragments�
By the end of 2015 we had:
1� Made the existence of 100 elephant corridors
public with hundreds of giant elephant corridor
signboards throughout India� This ensures
their pathways remain protected from potential
developers�
2� Led a £20 million pledge which will secure
half of all identiied elephant corridors by
forming The Asian Elephant Alliance� Total
cost for all 100 corridors: £38 million� Our
pledge partners include: International Fund
for Animal Welfare (IFAW), IUCN Netherlands,
Wildlife Trust of India and World Land Trust�
3� Secured 4 elephant corridors in Assam,
Northeast India and voluntarily relocated
the irst community out of the migratory
danger zone into new homes� This project
transformed the lives of over 200 people
and 1,700 wild endangered elephants�

DOING A PR JOB FOR A
FORGOTTEN ANIMAL
As the illegal ivory trade increases at an unprecedented level, the
African elephant continues to attract primary media attention and
rightly so. However, overshadowed by this plight lies another species
with a problem just as acute – the Asian elephant.
Population numbers have plummeted by 90%
over the past 100 years, with less than 50,000
left in the wild today� This has secured them
an unwanted place on the IUCN Red List of
Threatened Species as oficially ‘endangered.’
Elephant Family is giving this animal a voice
and ensuring it will not go unnoticed�
Only with political will and the glare of the media
spotlight can the course of history be bent in the
opposite direction for these magniicent animals.
We know that people protect what they know,
so our irst job is to create awareness.
Shining a multi-coloured spotlight
on their plight:
• Travels to my Elephant was launched by
Elephant Family’s Patron, Goldie Hawn, and
saw a leet of elephant-infused rickshaws
invade the streets of London, appearing at
London’s most notable events, restaurants
and hotels, before being auctioned by Henry
Wyndham of Sotheby's� More than 50 artists,
milliners, upholsters and designers created the
leet, the sale of which alone raised £700,000.
In November, a further 49 auto-rickshaws raced
across India� They travelled over 500 kilometres
to meet the late Mark Shand's rescued
elephant, Tara, at her home in Kipling Camp�
Magniicently partnered by the Quintessentially
Foundation and generously sponsored by
Selfridges, Maclaren and Cadogan Tate, the
Travels to my Elephant campaign and its
conservation message reached over 687
million people across the globe�
By the end of 2015 we had:
• Secured two front-page stories in the Evening
Standard, a feature article in the Mail Online
– the world’s most visited website - and a
Royal exclusive with Hello!
• Reached 28 Indian media outlets which
covered the Travels to my Elephant event,
carrying our message across the globe�
• Increased our social media proile by over
100% to over 84,000 active Facebook
supporters and 18,400 Twitter followers�
• Generated signiicant national press about
our work that warns people about wild
elephants, including an in-depth feature
article in The Guardian newspaper and
National Geographic online�
• Raised the issue of elephant electrocution
in the Guardian newspaper with our work
to protect elephants from high voltage electric
power lines�
• Featured in The Independent and the Evening
Standard newspaper during Elephant Week
with a compelling article on the plight of the
endangered Asian elephant�

LOBBYING GOVERNMENTS & COMPANIES
INFLUENCING
THE INFLUENCERS
We believe governments and companies play one of the most powerful roles in
protecting our natural world today.
Elephant Family campaigns for accountability and
uses research to advise governments on shaping
the best future for Asian elephants�
• Following the formation of the Asian Elephant
Alliance, we started lobbying Corporate India to
match the £20 million corridor pledge� These
funds enable 100 corridors to be made safe
- the number one conservation priority for
India's elephants�
• We funded an investigation to expose wild
elephant capture for tourism and entertainment
purposes� Our campaign will highlight the issue
at the next Convention on International Trade
in Endangered Species (CITES) World Wildlife
Conference in 2016� This will hold countries
accountable for the protection of
remaining wild elephants and ensure
that national regulations are
strengthened and international
borders secured�

• An inluential campaign in Borneo was
powered by Elephant Family which prevented
the expansion of a palm oil plantation in
Malaysia's easternmost state, Sabah, which
kept important elephant habitats connected�
• We spoke out on behalf of impoverished
farmers whose crops were destroyed by
elephants� After repeated letters sent out to
governmental authorities by our project team,
payments were inally distributed to farmers
in the Dhenkanal District in India� As a result,
the team has noticed that villagers’ attitude
towards elephants has changed signiicantly
and they are becoming more willing to support
conservation initiatives�
• Elephant Family helped design the framework
for the irst Myanmar Elephant Action Plan�
Upon completion, surveys will be conducted to
determine the current status of elephants and
other species sharing Myanmar's precious
wild forests� The plan will also identify the top
priorities needed in order to address threats
posed to Asian elephants across the country�

We are here to ensure dear Mark’s hard won legacy is
maintained and enhanced…he would have been so pleased to
know we have just met the representatives of four conservation
charities who are now partnering with Elephant Family with the
aim of unlocking £20 million to secure 100 elephant corridors
across India by 2025.

POWERING GRASSROOTS
CONSERVATION
Elephant Family’s ieldwork stretches from the undulating tea terraces of the
Western Ghats, to the foothills of the Cardamom Mountains, to the dense
rainforests of northern Borneo.
Collaborating with irst class ield partners
forms the backbone of our conservation strategy�
We fund the work of leading environmentalists
and grassroots conservation organisations�
Saving elephants by SMS
Elephant Family supports the innovative and
groundbreaking work of Dr� Ananda Kumar, a
scientist at the Nature Conservation Foundation
(NCF)� One of his recent projects, the Elephant
Information System (EIS), has saved many lives
since inception and won him a Whitley Award in
2015, dubbed the ‘Green Oscar.’ This system uses
text messaging and signal lights to warn people
of nearby elephant movements�
We continue to fund Dr� Kumar’s excellent
work that is being carried out across high
human-elephant conlict zones in India. An
Elephant Informer Network (EIN) is also in the
process of being established, which will track
elephant locations and incidents, and relay the
information back to the NCF ield station in real
time� This will allow the Forest Department in
India to make informed decisions about the
management of human-elephant conlict
in the region�
Funding the frontline
Elephant Family is backing some of the bravest
men in Myanmar - wildlife rangers. These men
are up against armed illegal loggers and hunters
who last year killed two elephants and burnt
down a ranger station as a warning�
The rangers use decommissioned logging
elephants to help them trek deep into the jungle
to root out illegal activity� Last year alone they
reported 230 incidents that resulted in scores
of arrests�
Stopping developers in their tracks
In Borneo we are powering the use of radio
collars and camera traps to track elephant
movements across three key regions� Such vital

data are conclusive evidence for governments
and companies to gauge where elephants will
move� This underpins the arguments for shaping
decisions to both protect important areas from
being turned into palm oil plantations and
preventing dangerous human-elephant conlicts.
Odisha - the worst place in the world
to be an elephant
This highly industrialised state in India is
becoming a deadly labyrinth of mines, open
wells, railways and people� Without help the last
surviving and highly stressed population of an
estimated 1,900 elephants will be trapped in
a landscape that cannot support them with
dangerous and costly results�
We work in collaboration with the Wildlife
Protection Society of India (WPSI) and the Wildlife
Society of Orissa (WSO) to create safe passages
for elephants free from electrical wires, railway
tracks and concrete gullies� We also prevent
thirsty elephants from falling into open wells and
meeting a horriic death, through designing and
trialing wells less hazardous to wild elephants
and other species�
Relief for working elephants
The Sumatran elephant is the most critically
endangered elephant in the world, which makes
our collaboration with the Veterinary Society for
Sumatran Wildlife Conservation (VESSWIC) crucial�
To stop the human-elephant conlict problem in
Indonesia, several years ago the government
removed what were deemed ‘rogue’ elephants from
the wild and placed them in elephant conservation
camps� They also use these elephants to drive
wild elephants away from crops and back into the
forests� Elephant Family funds veterinarians to
care for these animals and improve captive
management, helping to alleviate the suffering
of these critically endangered creatures�

2015 was the irst year Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and
The Duchess of Cornwall supported Elephant Family in their capacity as
joint Royal Presidents.
In March 2015 Their Royal Highnesses launched
Travels to my Elephant, inspired by the novel of
our late founder, The Duchess’s brother, Mark
Shand� Its phenomenal success would simply
not have been possible without their backing�
In June 2015 they enabled another conservation
milestone; the formation of The Asian Elephant
Alliance and a collective £20m pledge for the
elephant corridors in India� Their presence,
numerous speeches, press launches and
endorsements throughout the year had a
rallying effect on supporters both in London
and New York�
Treasured Patrons and beloved daughter, sister
and nephew to Mark, Ayesha Shand, Annabel
Elliot and Ben Elliot also made a substantial
contribution, most notably with the Travels to my
Elephant campaign� Our partnership with Ben
Elliot and The Quintessentially Foundation raised
over £1�2million� Annabel collaborated with Luke
Irwin to design a rickshaw known as 'Camping
Lou' which raised a staggering £32,000 at
auction, Ayesha with Alice Irwin then raced
through India raising a spectacular £14,700�
Patron, HRH Princess Eugenie of York lent
support by reading Mark's famous book, Travels
on my Elephant, to school children in Sloane
Square along with recruiting top artists, attending
press events and the main auction for Elephant
Forever in NYC� Sarah, Duchess of York, also
travelled all the way to India to congratulate
the rickshaw racers at the inish line.
The family behind Elephant Family are our
rocket fuel and we are deeply appreciative
of their patronage and relentless support�

Elephant Family’s motivated and passionate team is located in two
inancial hubs of the world – London and New York.
Since registering in 2014, Elephant Family USA
has grossed over $4 million and achieved over
500 press mentions�
In 2015 we launched Elephants Forever with
actor Owen Wilson� This creative art event
beneited both Elephant Family and Space for
Giants, generating funds for both African and
Asian elephants� The event brought together 25
of the world’s top contemporary artists including
Tom Sachs, Rob Pruitt, David Yarrow, Urs Fisher,
Tracey Emin and Walton Ford at the Angel
Orensanz Foundation in New York� Over 900
people attended the exhibition, including high
proile guests such as Susan Sarandon, HRH
Prince Beatrice, HRH Princess of York, Bob
Colacello and Waris Ahluwalia - each one of
them paying tribute to their appreciation and
love for this lagship species.
The Elephants Forever auction made possible
by Maclaren was held ive days later at Sotheby’s
and hosted by Owen Wilson himself� It grossed
over $1 million on the night�
Having elephants disappear on our watch
is going to be a strike against us. A big one.
