On behalf of the Star Ball Melbourne Committee and the
Starlight Children’s Foundation we extend our gratitude to all those
individuals and companies for supporting the 2016 Star Ball Melbourne.
Our aim tonight is to raise more than $400,000 for the Starlight Children’s
Foundation through a Silent Auction, Live Auction, Raffles and Pledges that in turn
will help to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families in Victoria.
We hope our thirteenth Star Ball Melbourne is memorable for all guests and

Inaugural Star Ball Melbourne Tribute
This year we mark the start of the ‘Star Ball Melbourne Tribute’.
Star Ball provides much needed funding to the Starlight Children’s Foundation for specific
project needs. This year we are estimating to raise a phenomenal $1.5m through the national
suite of Star Ball events held in Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin and Canberra. Each Star Ball
event is managed by a local committee of private volunteers, dedicated to helping seriously
ill children, teenagers and their families.
We are pleased to take this opportunity to thank our very first Tribute recipient,
The committees have recognised the importance in creating a continual income stream for
the Starlight Children’s Foundation to fund future projects. As a result, a decision was made
to establish an endowment fund and the allocation of funds is now designated as follows:
50% Specific Starlight Projects 30% Endowment Fund 20% Direct contribution to the Starlight Children’s Foundation
The endowment fund is now sitting at $2.35m. This is a result we are incredibly proud of and
are thankful to all who have assisted in helping us achieve this.

BRINGING JOY & LAUGHTER
TO SICK AUSSIE KIDS
Starlight’s mission is to brighten the lives of seriously
ill children, teenagers and their families turning pain, fear
and stress into fun, joy and laughter.
Just because you’re sick doesn’t mean you stop being
a child. And it shouldn’t mean missing out on all the
fun of childhood. That’s why, since 1988 Starlight has
helped sick kids simply be kids. We say goodbye pain
and stress and hello fun and laughter!
Because there’s more to treating a child’s illness than
just medicine, we work hand in hand with health
professionals on the development of all our programs.
In fact, our unique programs are the result of extensive
research to meet the specific needs of Aussie kids
and teens. Games, play, laughter and creativity are all
important to kids’ wellbeing and that helps improve
overall health too.
Not only are we home-grown, Starlight is also the
broadest reaching children’s charity in Australia.
Last year we helped over 185,000 sick kids and their
families, playing a vital role in the Australian healthcare
system to support kids of all ages, regardless of their
illness or injury.

Starlight Wish
Jasmine’s Starlight Story
For 8 year old Jasmine, Captain Starlight made her long
hospital stays a whole lot brighter. Jasmine endured 10
months of chemotherapy to treat her Leukaemia and
during this time became known as the super smiling
‘Princess Jasmine’ in the Starlight Express
Room. Jasmine loved playing dress
ups and doing art and craft with
Captain Starlight. She made
new friends and could
forget about doctors and
treatment and just be a
kid again.
During her battle with
Leukaemia, Jasmine
dreamed of a family
holiday far away from
the hospital, where
they could have fun
together again (and she
could meet a dolphin!).
Her Starlight Wish made this
dream come true. And where
better to have a special family
break than sunny Queensland where Jasmine also
got to make some dolphin friends at SeaWorld. Her
Starlight Wish brought her family together for some
much needed fun after a traumatic year, and made
happy memories to last a lifetime.

How we help sick kids...
Starlight Express Rooms
& Captain Starlight
Everyday in children’s hospitals across Australia, Captain
Starlight arrives from Planet Starlight and lands in the
Starlight Express Room. These bright medical‑free
spaces are filled with fun, music and laughter – where
kids can forget about being sick and simply be kids.
So while doctors treat a child’s illness, Captain Starlight
provides a healthy dose of laughter making hospital
more fun, much less scary and giving families a much
needed break and time together.

Sick kids often find it hard to stay positive through
the tough times. So a Starlight Wish gives sick
kids and their families much needed happiness,
something fun they can all look forward to together,
and creates lasting positive memories that can be
recalled when times get tough. We’ve granted over
9000 Starlight Wishes since 1988.

Teenagers who are sick or have a disability have
different needs to those of younger kids. That’s
why we developed Livewire which helps teenagers
connect with other teens who are dealing with the
similar issues and find positive ways to cope with
their illness. Through our safe online chatroom on
livewire.org.au, teens can make friends, chat and blog
in a safe and supportive environment. And for teens
in hospital, Livewire runs creative workshops like
music, photography and film making.
The magic of Starlight is to provide immediate relief or
distraction from the pain and stress a child is feeling –
helping to brighten a dark, stressful time with joy, fun and
laughter. Over the longer term we also help bring out
the unique individuality of a child or teenager, through
creativity and self‑expression.
Outreach
Through our Outreach program Captain Starlight
visits remote Indigenous communities. By engaging
kids through song, dance and storytelling, we’ve
helped to improve health clinic attendance by an
amazing 60% and deliver important positive health
messages in the community.
Starlight’s innovative programs are based on the
principles of positive psychology and the World Health
Organisation’s social model of health. So while health
professionals focus on treating a child’s illness, Starlight
is there to lift their spirits, giving them the opportunity to
laugh, play and be a child again.
