Colby Monet lawyer Ricardo Hrtschan, Susan Stacho of Sauvons l’Anse a l’Orme, and Olivier
Janda of the Legacy Project announced the filing of an injunction to the Quebec Superior Court
last week to reinstate the agricultural zoning for 20 hectares of Pierrefonds land.
t. 514.694.8777 [email protected]
The group filed an injunction to see lot
1977331, land that is 19.8 hectares large, reinstated to its original agricultural zoning and
prevent its subdivision, Stacho, accompanied
by her Colby Monet lawyer Ricardo Hrtschan,
told reporters Wednesday morning in front of
the Montreal Courthouse.
“This place is really important for Montreal,
not just the West Island. This is one of last
remaining unprotected spaces we have. It’s our
responsibility to protect it. Our future, our
kids, they need places to go, places to be
exposed to nature,” said the Pierrefonds
resident.
The legal proceeding will be financed by
the Legacy Project, a group which finances
environment cases.
De-zoned on Jan. 14, 2010, the land in
question is owned by Grilli Developpement
Inc. The company purchased lots in
Pierrefonds West in December 2014, according to documents obtained by the Chronicle.
This is just the first step in what Sauvon
L’Anse a l’Orme hopes will lead to the ultimate
goal of conserving the 185 hectares of land in
its entirety. Montreal wants to see 5,000 to
6000 homes, schools, commercial buildings
built in the sector in the next 10 years.
“Every inch of this city has been developed…this is one of the last green spaces. We
want to protect,” said Hrtschan.
Cliche responds
The former Parti Quebecois environment
minister denied any conflict of interest, telling
the Chronicle all parties, including the Green
Coalition, were aware of his efforts to bring the
five major landowners and city of Montreal
officials to the bargaining table.
“I’ve been steering a collaborative process
and informing everyone. There is no conflict
of interest because all parties agreed that I
would be in the middle of all of this,” said
Cliche, adamant that the three-year restriction
didn’t apply to him as he was never an
employee of the city of Montreal.
Cliche began what he called the conservation and development of Pierrefonds-Roxboro
West in 2005 on behalf of Montreal’s Grands
Parcs division. He told the Chronicle he was
tasked with convincing the landowners, including Developpement Pierrefonds and Grilli to
sell some of their land for conservation
purposes.
In the last three years, he’s helped the five
landowners reach commonality on issues like
the management of a future water network in
the territory.
He said the Green Coalition was kept in the
loop at least once a year of his activities over
the past decade.
Groupe Grilli and the mayor of PierrefondsRoxboro, Jim Beis, didn’t respond to the
Chronicle’s request for an interview.

L’Anse a l’Orme has filed a request
to Quebec’s Superior Court to rescind the current zoning for a key
section of the 185 hectares of land
to be developed in Pierrefonds West
– the site of future project that could
bring over 5,000 homes to the area.

Around 4pm, the girl and her friends were
playing when she was approached by a suspicious male.
As she ran, he would have tried grabbing

The man in his forties has been described
as potbellied, with short dark brown hair.
The incident occurred merely two weeks
after a man approached a six-year-old girl near

Hey, Melly here and I’ve been waiting for a
home since February. With my
movie star looks, I know it’s hard to believe.
I’m presently at FIC (Ecole
de Formation des Intervenants canins du
Quebec) and Virginie Forest says that I am
doing marvellously! I walk so well with my

have learned to keep all four paws firmly

I’m good with other dogs, I’ll pass on cats. My
background is that I was
found as a stray, Animatch refers to us as
unclaimed treasures. Did you know that most
dogs are abandoned between 8 and 18
months, at the height of adolescence? Dogs
and humans are very different, but they do
have this in
common: adolescence is often a rock period for
parents and guardians. I am a totally different
dog from when I first arrived but I do need a
family that will keep me active both mentally
and physically. So, what do you say?
Looking for a true original, one-of-a-kind, type
of dog? I promise I won’t disappoint you.
Please go to the Animatch website at www.

Two Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) bugs
were found in one of 25 traps set up
on public ash trees in Beaconsfield
on July 1, the Chronicle has learned. The city has the most ash trees
in the West Island.
core of our green environment; they contribute to
air quality, prevent erosion and heat islands, and
account for nearly 20 per cent of property values.
It is important to take urgent action to preserve our
ash trees,” said Bourelle in a statement.
There have been 18 infested ash trees divided among Pointe Claire, Dorval, Dollard des
Ormeaux, Baie D’Urfe, and Pierrefonds. The
EAB has ravaged millions of ash trees since its
arrival in North American over a decade ago.

EAB plan
The city has earmarked $445,000 to fight the
EAB, up from $85,000 in 2014. Only Dorval
and Pointe Claire have budgeted more with
$500,000 for 2015.
Over 750 public ash trees in Beaconsfield
will be removed over a five-year period, city
officials announced earlier this year. Of that
total, the public works department intends on
removing or replacing 508 trees less than 15
cm in diameter and 250 dying trees
The public works department will maintain a yearly trap monitoring and branch
debarking measure on 3,200 public trees to
determine the presence of the exotic beetle.
Roadside and park trees will be treated
every second year, while the city intends to
plant 200 trees (40 different species) per year The Emerald Ash Borer beetle was found in Beaconsfield earlier this month, a city official has
until 2019, according to the city’s action plan. confirmed. The bug has devastated millions of ash trees in North America. Chronicle Photo
multi-pretsmr.ca
With the arrival of the ash tree-killing EAB,
originally from Asia, the exotic beetle has yet
to infest a tree, director general Patrice Boileau
told the weekly newspaper last week.
Beaconsfield has since renewed its effort to
promote the preventive treatment of TreeAzin
for both public and private property ash trees.
Residents can take advantage of a 10 per cent
discount by choosing the city’s preferred service provider of the biopesticide.
The treatment of ash trees, which must be
undertaken every two years, is important
according to Mayor Georges Bourelle because
Beaconsfield has the most ash trees (11,000) of
all demerged cities in the West Island.
“This is an important operation because it
helps preserve the environment that has made
Beaconsfield the exceptional city that it is. We
must never forget that mature trees constitute the

Amanda Lynch was at work when the wrong time.
Dorval’s Amanda Lynch says her apartment was flooded on June 5 after a city pipe burst in her
closet. Chronicle – Anthony Abbondanza
Sebastien Gauthier told the Chronicle.
Mario D’Arienzo, the owner of Belle Vita,
told the Chronicle’s sister paper le Messager
Dorval-Lachine Sanexen was negligent in the
execution of its work. He valued the damages
at $20,000.
Lynch, who doesn’t have home insurance,
was asked by Bella Vita properties to vacate
her belongings from the apartment before it
undergoes repair. According to Lynch, Bella
Vita has offered to cancel the $915 a month
lease.

“The apartment is uninhabitable. There’s probably mold under the floor, the walls. It’s
chaos,” said Lynch, who had just renewed her
lease with Propriete Bella Vita, the owner of
the building, for a second straight year.
Sanexen Environmental Services were in
the process of rehabilitating the water main –
part of a larger reconstruction project for
Cloverdale Street – when a water supply pipe
in Lynch’s closet burst, she told the Chronicle.
The company didn’t return the Chronicle’s
request for an interview. As such, it remains
unclear how the pipe burst.
Lynch said she’s been given two versions of
what happened: the first, mounting pressure in
Insurance troubles
Now, not only have she, her boyfriend, a
friend, and three cats been forced to relocate,
Lynch said Sanexen’s insurance company
IndemniPro is unwilling to pay for the damages
to her recently-purchased bedroom set and
couch and relocation costs.
In an email sent to Lynch, and obtained by
the Chronicle, an IndemniPro representative
wrote: “I went at your apartment on Monday
and noticed that you have left your property as
such without caring. Many of these could have
been recovered but your inaction might certainly have aggravated the damages. As a courtesy, we formally advise you that we have no responsibility to handle your property. Because of
your inaction, it will be very difficult for you to
have an indemnity to the level you are expecting. You must understand that we have no
intention to pay damages made worse by your
own disregard toward your possessions.”
The representative refused to comment.
Sanexen is “entirely responsible for all
damages and repairs,” Dorval spokesperson
multi-pretsmr.ca
she received a phone call a little
after 10 a.m. on June 5 – she had to
return to her Cloverdale Street
apartment in Dorval. When she
arrived, her ground level, twobedroom apartment was flooded
with two to four inches of water.

St.John Bosco Parish turns 200
St. John Bosco Parish is celebrating its 200th
birthday. For the occasion, various celebrations, including a Solemn Mass in Italian and
English, a procession through Ville Emard’s
streets and a BBQ, will be held during the
week-end of August 15 and 16. This will be a
time to welcome not only fellow parishioners,
but to bring together all devotees of Saint John
Bosco of all cultural backgrounds from the
Montreal area.

Former Lion player signed a one-year contract to become a Montreal Canadien
● [email protected]
National Hockey League (NHL)
defenceman Mark Barberio, 25,
will soon be training in Quebec
City before the start of training
camp with the goal of cracking the
Montreal Canadiens lineup for the
2015-16 season.
“I’m going to camp trying to make the team. I
want to leave a good impression with the
coaches. I’m going to work hard and arrive in
good shape,” said the Kirkland native.
After his former team, the Tampa Bay
Lightning, were unwilling to tender him a qualifying offer after they lost to the Chicago
Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Final, the
6-foot-1, 199 pound free agent signed a oneyear, two-way contract on July 1 to play for his
childhood team.
His excitement to join the century-old
Montreal Canadiens stems from his family’s
affection toward the ‘bleu, blanc, rouge.’
“My whole family are Canadiens fans. My
dad has been a fan since the 60s. I grew up as
a huge Canadiens fan,” Barberio told the
Chronicle last week.

unsigned players seek new teams – came

around, he said he was surprised to learn
Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin
was among several suitors.
“My agent had told me that Marc Bergevin
had called. I didn’t think they’d be interested.
But then Bergevin called again. I was like
‘they’re pretty serious. At that point I told my
agent ‘let’s do this.’ I couldn’t say no to the
Canadiens,” said Barberio.
Barberio will attend training camp in
September having played 103 NHL games –
all with the Lightning, the team which drafted
him with the 152nd pick in the sixth round of
the 2008 NHL draft. During his time with the
Lightning, Barberio scored 17 points.
A product of the Lac St. Louis Midget AAA
hockey organization and Lakeshore Hockey,
the defenceman enjoyed some of his better
professional years with the Tampa’s farm club
in the American Hockey League (AHL). He
earned the league’s top defenceman award in
2011-12 after posting 61 points in 74 games for
the Norfolk Admirals.
In 215 games played at the AHL level, he’s
recorded 134 points.
Barberio’s spot on the Canadiens isn’t guaranteed. The team boasts seven defenceman
with one-way contracts, including P.K Subban,
Andrei Markov, and Jeff Petry.
“My job is to earn a spot to start the season.
If it doesn’t happen, it won’t change my goal,”
he said.

Fêtes gourmandes at LÉGUMYLÈNE in Île Bizard
Along with Marilyn Monroe and Elvis, 200 guests were at 40 Westt Steakhouse on June 15th for
the RBC Hollywood Flair fundraiser. The inaugural edition of the event raised $60,000 of which
75% will benefit West Island Community Shares and 25% the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care
Residence. Following the result of $58,500 announced at the event, additional donations brought
the final total raised to $60,000. Guests enjoyed food stations featuring 40 Westt’s Chef Stefano’s
famous mini sliders, salmon and crabmeat nuggets, pepper-crusted grilled duck and other delicacies. The evening’s entertainment included Marilyn Monroe and Elvis impersonators who dazzled the guests with their presence, a cigar lounge, and a photo booth.
On June 27th, the team at Légumylène celebrated summer with their now traditional Fêtes
Gourmandes. The day was carried out this year in a jazzy atmosphere. In fact, in the words of
Mylène, preparing these 12 new varieties of all equally beautiful as delicious salads is just an excuse
to ultimately thank the clientele that has been loyal for more than 6 years! Do not hesitate to ask
them for advice the next time you visit the 395 Cherrier Street in Île Bizard (near the bridge).
