Clear Skies, Lollipops, and Rainbows! Yes that is my weather report for the
month of May. Let the sunshine smack you in the face and get outside! Crank
up the BBQs, order a bottle or 2 at one of Toronto’s sexiest patios and move
that body! Helllllooooo May!
W
e all know that this is the month for
you to roll out the red carpet for your
Momma! That woman changed your
diapers, folded 20,000 pairs of your underwear,
made you countless meals and is always your
cheerleader. Now is the time to make your mother
shine! May 11th — mark it down and invest your
time in planning a day for her.
May is such happy month! So make everything
happy all around you — including your home. Take
the time this month to brighten up your home with
a splash of colour and the fresh smell of flowers.
The polar vortex is dead and buried so take a visit
to Avenue and Davenport and buy your home
some fresh new life! Twenty dollars a week will
make all the difference and help you smile every
day when you walk out the door. Just make sure to
water them and use ice cubes to keep them living
strong! Visit Grower’s Flower Market located at
126 Avenue Road, Tel: 416.920.2442 — she is
the Orchid Queen and gives Martha Stewart a run for her money!

VICTORIA DAY WEEKEND • May 19th
The first long weekend of sunshine and heat! If
you are heading to cottage country I am happy
to tag along! I can’t cook but I can clean! I am
happy to clean up after everyone if I can just get
a lift — I can’t drive either! If that isn’t an option
there is so much excitement happening in our city.
If you plan to stay home and watch the fireworks,
there will be multiple different viewing options
offered in the city. In the past years, my favourite
firework shows have been at Ashbridges Bay and
Canada’s Wonderland. The fireworks display at
Canada’s Wonderland usually starts at 10pm and
the show is included with park admission. There’s
a good chance you can catch the fireworks from the
comfort of your own backyard if you live nearby.
The fireworks show at Ashbridges Bay (south of
Lakeshore Road East and Coxwell Avenue) has
often started at 9:45 in the past years, and lasts a
long 15 minutes, but be sure to head to the Beaches
neighbourhood early to get a good seat! Remember

Mother - Daughter
GIFTS FOR MOTHER’S DAY
Little girls count on their mothers for care and safety, question their
mothers throughout their teens, sift out her knowledge as they come of age
— and then somehow overnight, it can strike like a bolt of lightning. There
it is, as it’s always been, our mother’s unconditional love from the second
we were born.
A
ppreciation may take a while
to grow, but when it does,
mothers and daughters often
become best friends as they laugh,
listen, learn, and lean on each other
equally. As adults, Mother’s Day is
one more opportunity to strengthen
those ties, to spoil her with surprises,
and to give symbols of the unconditional love we feel for her as well.
Canadian lifestyle expert Janette
Ewen offers these tips for personalized gifts between adult mothers and
daughters:
Tap a special interest. You may
have a few shared pursuits with your
mother, but which one is tops for her?
Is it music, cooking, perhaps horseback riding? Her favourite pastime
can be the base for a gift, or for a day
out together. Indeed, if it’s something
you also did together when you were
younger, now it may have much more
meaning.
Give her a gift card — and go
shopping. Select a store that is certain to put a sparkle in her eye and
arrange a day to take her there. The
allure of a gift card is the fun of finding something fabulous on someone
else’s dime.
Honour your bond with a
keepsake. Start a bracelet that can
be filled with special charms for
years to come. Celebrating moments
is the specialty of leading jewelry
brand, Pandora, and this year their
Mother’s Day collection (with
delicate roses, tiny bows, symbolic
hearts and filigree lace) is especially
eye-catching as it goes hand-in-hand
with the pretty pastels of spring. On
future occasions, you can solve any
gift-giving dilemma with a matching
statement ring, pendant, clip, or
earrings. The collection can be
explored at Pandora.net.
Take part in her fitness and
health. If you have shared health and
wellness goals, buy her new runners
and some attractive new work-out
clothes. Plan a weekly walk together,
a game of tennis, yoga, swimming,
or aerobic classes at your gym. Make
fitness fun year-round by sharing
any tips you both find for your body,
mind, and soul.

Did You Know?
Frankie Flowers’ Fun Facts about the

Did You Know?
Did You Know?
BARE BUM TEST
GIANT TOMATO
Take a look through the pages
of old gardening books and you
may find reference to the “Bare
Bum test”, a method gardeners
would use to see if soil temperatures were warm enough to sow
seeds. Simply pull down your
pants and if the soil is warm
enough to sit on, it should be
warm enough to plant. For the
sanity of your neighbours I don’t
recommend you pulling your
pants down but I do recommend you pay attention to soil
temperature when sowing seeds
including grass seed, radishes,
leafy greens and herbs. For most
seeds soil temperature should be
between 15˚to 20˚C (60–70˚F)
and can easily be measured
using a meat thermometer.
The world record for heaviest
tomato ever grown is 3.51 kg (7
lb 12oz). According to Guinness World Records the tomato
was grown by G. Graham of
Edmond, Oklahoma, USA in
1986. To put this in perspective
Graham’s tomato weighs about
the same as an average new
born child.

ROYAL BASIL
Basil belongs to the mint family.
Native to tropical Asia the name
“basil” is derived from the Greek
word “basileios” meaning “king”
or “royal”, as reflected on ancient
cultures’ belief that this herb
was noble and sacred. One thing
is for certain, basil is sacred in
the kitchen; but did you know
research has shown combining
basil and yogurt together and
applying on the skin may clear
up acne?

You most likely know Ontario’s

The reason for the smell is the

THREE SISTERS
“Three sisters” in gardening
refers to the ancient Native
American planting technique
of growing corn, beans and
squash together. In the modern
garden we call this “companion
planting”, where each plant helps
one another. Corn is planted to
support the pole bean, beans
help by fixing nitrogen in the soil
to feed the corn and squash, and
squash is planted underneath to
shade both the corn and bean’s
roots. Together the three sisters
grow in harmony.

RECIPE FOR
RENOVATION
By GLEN PELOSO | Spring is here and typically it’s
the time when we see many clients start planning
and beginning various home renovations. While I
often say, “the details are in the planning, and if you
fail to plan, you plan to fail!” — nothing can really
prepare you for the actual event of the renovation.
But once this hardest part is over, your new space will
bring you loads of joy!
H
ere are a few quick tips
to help you through the
process:
1. PLAN, PLAN AND THEN
PLAN SOME MORE. Consider
what needs changing and what
should stay. Draw out every
detail as changing a drawing
is the cheapest way to redo
anything. It’s a smart idea to
either hire someone to help pull
your ideas together; but if you
choose to work alone, use graph
paper and draw the room out.
Then draw in all the elements
in the same scale to be sure
everything fits. Don’t forget to
leave space for pathways as well.
2.CREATE A BUDGET THAT
IS REALISTIC. Once you have
decided what you are going to
do, determine what you have to
spend. Be very careful when you
Glen’s before and after

that the hectic hassle
of a renovation are
well worth it!
shop. If it isn’t in the budget then
leave those items as something
for another renovation with
another budget. If you go over
budget the renovation that is
supposed to make your life better
will only cause stress. Once
you determine exactly what
product you’re going to use, the
contractor’s quote can be precise,
as they know exactly what needs
to be installed.
3.CHECK OUT YOUR
CONTRACTOR. When you are
looking at general contractors,
be sure that you get several
references and call them. Ask
about the final product as well
as the process. Make sure they
have done the kind of project
you’re proposing — basements
and kitchens are very different.
Get a written quote that spells
out exactly what you have
www.onthego.to 25
OTG | HOME
planned and using the materials
you’ve budgeted. When you
make changes along the way, ask
about price and write that down
together. It’s important to get
the quote in writing, even if you
have to write it up yourself and
you both sign off.
4.RESERVE FIFTEEN
PERCENT OF THE BUDGET
FOR THE “OH CRAP” LIST.
Those are the things that simply
can’t be planned for. Sometimes
something behind the walls will
have to be repaired or replaced
so that you can go forward with
your plan. It is impossible to
know what those things are until
the job is underway and when
you find out that the sub floor
has to be replaced, you’ll say,
“oh crap!” Having some reserve
budget will allow you to pay
for the materials and labour for
those unexpected items.
5.PREPARE FOR SOME
MESS! No matter how often we
tell our clients that the process
is going to be messy they always
seem to be surprised. I promise
you, it will be dusty all through
the house. It is important to pack
up or cover any electronics that
can be damaged. Wrap those
precious things in plastic or take
them out of the house if you can
— you will be happier when the
job is done. TIP: Also plug the
26 www.onthego.to
air vents in the spaces you are
working on to avoid having your
furnace distribute the dust to the
rest of the house; you can just
use newspaper or rags.
If you can afford to hire an
industrial cleaner for the end of
the project it will save you the
‘big’ job of cleaning yourself.
If you are going to live in your
house while you renovate then
you have to plan for a slightly
frustrating, inconvenient time —
but only for a short period. Keep
your eye on the destination and
keep reminding yourself that it
will all be over soon. Make a deal
with your spouse before the work
starts: no serious relationship
discussions during the reno!
When the dust settles, you will
be happy you followed these
steps. If you can, get help. If you
think a professional is expensive,
wait until you hire an amateur!

STYLISHLY SMALL
By BLIMA EHRENTREU
PRINCIPAL of TheDESIGNERS
Don’t let the small size of a room prevent you from becoming inspired.
You can give a room maximum character within a minimal amount of
space, and a powder room is a great place to start.
A
powder room is the
ideal place to invest
in luxurious products
that showcase high style and
personality because its small size
will keep you within your budget.
There are so many options to
consider when thinking about
how to give your powder room a
wow factor. Since powder rooms
have smaller surface areas to
cover, you can purchase less
material and free up more money
for wall and floor treatments.
Additionally, because the space
is small and confined, you do
not have to coordinate with the
existing style in your home.
For instance, you can create
a dramatic backdrop for a
glamorous retreat by tiling the
walls with a mosaic tile or wall
tile, or by using wallpaper. You
can also use decorative paneling
or tiling on lower walls to make
the room appear more vertical.
You can maximize each
square foot by focusing on
space-saving details. We like
to conserve space by keeping
www.onthego.to 29
OTG | HOME
storage flush with walls, whenever
possible. Pocket doors can also
save space while complementing
the bathroom’s style, and folded
and stacked towels can share
space with decorative accents
under the sink basin. Additionally,
choose a vanity that is specifically
designed and scaled for smaller
spaces. Since its proportions are
already suited to the room’s size
constraints, it will provide you
with just enough storage for the
essentials and no extra room for
clutter.
In order to make the space
appear larger, you can incorporate sleek and subtle features
that keep the powder room airy
and bright. High-gloss finishes
such as lacquer, metallic, or
glass reflect natural and artificial
light, allowing a small powder
room to look bright at any time
of day. We find that light colour
ceramic or marble tiles also tend
to brighten a small space, while
30 www.onthego.to
a polished metal finish and sizeable mirrors tend to reflect and
amplify natural light.
To that end, we all know that
lighting is an important element
in every room. However, it plays
an especially critical role in
visually expanding small spaces.
We advise layering your lighting
in a powder room: Use recessed
lighting in the ceiling to create
a general and balanced light in
the room, and use sconces to add
lighting around the mirror.
A final and perhaps most
important piece of advice: Sometimes when decorating small
spaces, “less is more”. If too
many materials, surfaces, accessories, and patterns are placed
in a small bathroom, they jar the
eye and prevent the cohesive
design that is integral in such a
small space.
Small powder rooms do not
have to be a challenge: You can
use innovative design solutions
so that style and functionality are
not compromised. Give yourself
and your guests a powder room
experience to remember by
following these easy tips.
• Focus on space-saving details.
• Incorporate sleek and subtle
features to keep the room airy
and bright.
• Use lighting to visually expand
the feel of the space
• Consider using wallpaper to create instant interest and drama.
• Wrap your wall colour onto the
ceiling to add more allusion of
height.

MORTGAGE BROKERS
WORK FOR YOU
Buying a home, even with today’s low interest rates, often requires diligent
research and market knowledge to find the mortgage that best meets your
personal financial needs and situation. When it comes to sourcing, advising and
arranging the biggest investment you’ll likely make in your lifetime, having a
mortgage broker on your home-buying team makes good sense.
P
rofessional mortgage brokers are specialists
whose job it is to stay on top of the ever-changing
nuances and lending rates of the housing market.
As independent consultants, they don’t represent any one
financial institution or lender, but rather source from a
wide spectrum of home financing products and services
according to the needs of each deal.
If you are shopping for your first home, looking to renew
your mortgage or are curious if there is a better deal out
there for your current mortgage, here are a few reasons
why speaking with a mortgage broker is a good idea:
MORTGAGE RESEARCH MASTERS
Mortgage brokers know the home-buying industry
inside and out and have in-depth knowledge of the many
different mortgage offers available from virtually all
lenders. Plus they have access to unique products. With
their understanding of the mortgage lending landscape,
and their finger on the pulse of industry trends and rates,
they have the inside edge in finding you the best deal at
the best rate.
MATCHMAKER MATCHMAKER
Every homebuyer’s circumstance is different when
it comes to securing a mortgage loan. Maybe this is
your first home? Perhaps self-employment is causing
a challenge? Other factors such as a low credit rating
or a situation like a divorce-proceeding buy out can
pose obstacles. With their wide network of resources,
32 www.onthego.to
mortgage brokers are invaluable when it comes to
shopping your mortgage to different lenders and finding
solutions tailored to your needs and financial situation.
AN UNBIASED PARTNER
Because mortgage brokers aren’t tied to any one lending
institution, they have your best interests top of mind
in offering objective advice and mortgage product
recommendations. Mortgage clients don’t typically pay
for a broker’s services. In most cases, the end lender
covers that fee which is typically based on the size of the
mortgage, not the rate. Therefore, finding you the best
deal is in their best interest.
TIME SAVING EXPERTS
House hunting is time consuming never mind shopping
for a mortgage you can live with. Mortgage brokers
take on the task of searching for the perfect financial
agreement, investing the time to not only source a lender,
but to also negotiate the best rate, terms and conditions
on your behalf. Acting as your personal homeownership
consultant, brokers also walk you through the mortgage
application process and paperwork from start to finish.
If securing a mortgage is in your future, speak with a
mortgage broker to see how they can help get you a
better deal.

INVESTIGATION WARNS CONSUMERS OF
DANGEROUS CURBSIDERS
AND EXTRA DEALER FEES
Six GTA car dealers and five individuals have been charged by OMVIC, after
the Regulator conducted undercover investigations concurrent to the recent
CTV-W5/Automobile Protection Association (APA) investigation. The W5
broadcast highlighted two troubling issues in the automotive marketplace:
the dangers posed by curbsiders (illegal, unlicensed dealers); and an apparent
lack of compliance by some registered dealers with Ontario’s advertising and
disclosure regulations.
“E
ach year we welcome the W5/APA
report,” stated OMVIC Director of
Communications, Terry O’Keefe. “A
light shone on the deceptive practices of curbsiders and questionable representations of some
registered dealers, is a good disinfectant; and just
as importantly, it helps educate consumers. Better
informed consumers are key to stemming these
problems.”
CURBSIDERS
W5/APA visited five supposed “private sellers”, all
of whom appeared to be curbsiders; each allegedly
misrepresented themselves and the vehicles they
offered for sale. According to the report, all vehicles
for sale by curbsiders were previous write-offs or
had been involved in significant collisions. These
facts were not disclosed (or not disclosed fully) to
the APA’s undercover shoppers. Further, many of
the repairs were of dubious quality and the roadworthiness of the vehicles was questionable.
“For nearly two decades OMVIC has warned
consumers about the very real dangers posed by
these unscrupulous sellers and has dedicated
significant resources to investigating and prosecuting them,” said O’Keefe. “In the past two and a half
years alone OMVIC has prosecuted and convicted
more than 130 individuals and businesses for curb36 www.onthego.to
siding; another 49 are currently before the courts.”
Curbsiders usually pose as private sellers
and advertise in the private classifieds of online
marketplaces; they also commonly sell from auto
repair facilities. Consumers who purchase from
curbsiders are deemed to have conducted private
transactions and therefore aren’t protected by OMVIC, Ontario’s consumer protection laws, or the
Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund. Those
protections are only available to consumers who
buy from OMVIC-Registered Dealers.
UNDERSTANDING ALL-IN
PRICE ADVERTISING
In Ontario, if a dealer advertises a price for a
vehicle, the price must include ALL fees and
charges the dealer intends to collect including:
•Freight
• PDI-PDE (pre-delivery inspection/expense)
• Administration (Admin) fee(s)
• Government levies (air tax, etc.)
• OMVIC fee ($5)
•Safety and e-test (unless the ad contains the
mandatory “Unfit Vehicle” or “As-Is” statement)
•Note: HST and licensing do not have to be
included in the price if the ad clearly indicates
they are not included.
Further, if a dealer intends to charge for
OTG | AUTO
products or services they have pre-installed on a
vehicle, those costs MUST also be included in the
advertised price. Examples include:
• Nitrogen/tire protection package
•Warranties
•Security or theft deterrent products/services
(etching, etc.)
•Fuel
“Should a dealer try to charge fees in excess
of the advertised price, walk away!” exclaimed
O’Keefe. “That dealer doesn’t deserve your business; shop elsewhere and report them to OMVIC.”
CONSUMER PROTECTION
OMVIC takes its role as Regulator very seriously.
“We have 15 dedicated Investigators and 13 Inspectors province-wide. We have two full-time Prosecutors and five Lawyers who prosecute Provincial
Offences Act charges or who conduct Discipline
Hearings (for breaches of the Code of Ethics) and
Licence Appeal Tribunal Hearings (LAT — for proposals to revoke a dealer or salesperson’s licence).”
OMVIC also employs a team of complaint
handlers to assist consumers who may have a dispute with an OMVIC-Registered Dealer. Last year
this team negotiated the return of over 1.1 million
dollars to consumers.
While OMVIC’s role is to provide consumer
protection and enforce the law, it’s just as vital that
consumers know their rights. In those infrequent
instances that a dealer does not live up to the standards demanded of them, an educated consumer is
the best line of defence.

investigations, to review all dealer discipline
decisions (for breaches of the Code of Ethics), or to

FINANCIAL SPRING CLEANING
For Couples
Now that the annual financial anxiety season is over, how did you and your
significant other do? Were you faced with tax bills or did you receive a refund?
If you both had a less than spectacular financial year, don’t be discouraged.
Now is a great time to review your financial situation and resolve to make
changes now to ensure you’re in a better position next year. Here are some
ideas that can help you both max out on the good and reduce the bad:
• CLEAN UP YOUR TAX ACT:
Really evaluate how well you
did this tax season. As a couple,
did you take advantage of every
credit possible — Spousal RRSP,
GST credit, child tax and child
care credits, marriage/common
law/equivalent-to-married
credits, RESP, charitable giving,
medical expenses, tuition and
education credits, and homeoffice expenses. Consider seeking
advice from a tax expert. It’s
worth the cost especially if you’ve
been through a major life event
like: marriage, divorce, career
changes, severance, retirement,
illness and/or disability.
• DEVELOP THE HABITS
OF SUPER SAVERS: Set up a
pre-authorised payment plan
to contribute to your registered
accounts year-round and have
fun watching your nest egg
grow. To take advantage of
automatic RSP contributions,
consider filing a Tax Reduction
at Source Form 1213. Essentially,
once the government approves
your application, they authorize
your employer to deduct less
tax from your salary. You’ll end
up increasing your cash flow
and reducing your end-of-year
tax bill, perhaps even to zero.
The extra money you bring
home can be directed towards
debt reduction or your savings
plan. Another option is to take
advantage of any retirement
savings programs that are
provided through work, which
results in instant tax savings.
• CREATE A HOUSEHOLD
BUDGET AND STICK TO IT:
Do you know what’s coming in
and what’s going out? If you
can’t answer these questions
immediately, you likely aren’t
budgeting. This can be a
daunting task for some, but it
doesn’t have to be. To make a
simple budget, make a list of
your income sources and your
monthly expenditures, including
your investments and savings.
You can track your budget on
paper, a spreadsheet or by using
personal finance software. One
trick to remember is to add your
month-end cash balances to the
following month.
• SERIOUSLY REDUCE YOUR
DEBT: Include a line in your
budget for debt reduction and
commit to paying it down. If a
part of your debt comes from
credit cards, aim to pay it off
every month and avoid making
new charges. It’s always helpful
to know your credit rating. If
the result is high, make all the
necessary changes to bring it
down to normal levels.
• PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENTS: Would you be able to
support your family and meet
your financial responsibilities if
you were in an accident or fell
ill? A term insurance policy is
an ideal solution because it’s inexpensive and it will meet your
short-term needs.

Techniques for a
Successful Job Search
It is always important to be up-to-date with the latest and greatest job search
techniques. triOS College Business Technology Healthcare’s team gives
you their perspective on the ever-changing world of employment. What can
job-seekers do to increase their chances of getting an interview?
APPLY FOR JOBS
MONDAY MORNING
Mondays are the best days to apply for
a job. Your resume is on the top of the
pile for recruiters and your chances of
getting an interview are increased.
SOCIAL MEDIA
We are in the age of social media so
use this to your advantage. Ramp up
your social media plan and take the
time to update your LinkedIn profile.
It is also a good idea to clean up
your presence on Facebook, Twitter
etc. and make sure your settings are
appropriate. Many employers Google
candidates before agreeing to an
interview.
VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME
If you are able to find a place to
volunteer that uses your skills and
expertise, you will gain valuable
experience. Not only that, you never
know where your next connection
will come from. It doesn’t stop there,
many employers look to see what
kind of volunteering you have on
your resume.
EXERCISE!
Yes, it sounds strange, but the
benefits of physical activity are truly
beneficial for job-seekers. Searching
for work is stressful and can cause
even the most successful individuals
to become insecure. Endorphins are
released when you exercise and they
will make you feel happier and more
motivated to keep job hunting.
What else can job-seekers do in the
interview?
• Dress up so you look professional.
• Arrive early so you are not flustered
or anxious.
• Shake hands with the interviewers.
• Make eye contact.
• Take notes.
• Have questions ready to ask.
• Ask for a business card before
exiting the meeting.
• Send a Thank You card or letter
within 36 hours of the meeting.
• Be sure to follow up a week or

The New Canadian Struggle
THE HARSH REALITY FOR SKILLED IMMIGRANTS
by Shaun Hanley | The story of Nina Banker is one that is very familiar to
new Canadians. A highly trained Physician and teacher in her own country,
Nina’s decision to come to Canada was fuelled by the prospect of a better life
for her children. This set her off on a journey full of hope, as her immigration
consultant described to her a “land of opportunity, where the sky is the limit.”
U
pon a successful
application to Canada,
she and her husband
were given entry as skilled
immigrants and told that with
their skills there would be a
rich job market awaiting them.
Unfortunately, what they were
told and the reality they faced
were very different.
In Canada, she learned that
her previous education was
not recognized. Their specific
medical degrees did not fall
into the regulated Canadian
professional requirements. To
practice medicine, Nina would
be required to go back to school
for a very long time. “Canada
was a place full of our hopes
and dreams,” Nina said, but the
family faced a major setback, and
moving back home was out of the
question. Nina and her husband
agreed that they came to Canada
for their children, so they would
find a way to make it work.

She had looked into going
back to school before, but the
public college programs were
“too long,” and she needed to
“get back to work as soon as
possible.” Nina was attracted to
the program as it was condensed,
had a practical work component,
and meant that she could be
working again in as little as 8
months.
“I felt as though the College
gave me the skills to become
successful, and after two months
of working, I had enough skills
and confidence to open my own
daycare,” said Nina. Currently
the proud owner of Huron
Park Montessori School in
Mississauga, Nina is happy to be
back in a professional career, and
is a testament to the strength
and struggles it takes to be a new
Canadian.

& Joanne McLeod
MASTER YOUR METABOLISM
M
etabolism is a buzz word
when it comes to weight
loss.
Metabolism is the process by
which your body converts what
you eat and drink into energy. Even
when you’re at rest your body needs
energy for all its basic functions
such as your breathing, circulation
of your blood, regulating your
hormone levels and growing and
repairing cells. This is known as
your basal metabolic rate and is
determined by your sex, age, and
body size and composition. The
number of calories your body uses
stays fairly consistent and accounts
for approximately 60 to 75 percent
of the calories you burn every day.
Besides your basal metabolic
rate, your body’s energy requirement to process food accounts for
about 10 percent of the calories
used each day and stays relatively
steady. It’s your physical activity
that uses up the rest of the calories
your body burns each day.
When it comes to weight
gain, we often blame it on a slow
metabolism. While it is true that
many factors concerning your
metabolism can’t be changed, there
are some things you can do.
The most effective way to
maximize your metabolism is
through consistent exercise, particularly aerobic/cardio exercise
and strength/resistance exercises.
Think of your muscles as the engine
that burns the calories you eat and
drink. You want them working at
peak efficiency.
Walk, jog or cycle at least 30
minutes each day to start and
increase the time when you can or
increase the intensity by doing a
route with some hills. The key is
to do activity that elevates your
heart rate and the more you do,
the greater the benefits. But even
extra movement helps burn calories
like taking the stairs, not using
the drive-thru to get your morning
coffee or tea, and housework.
Strength/resistance exercises
help to counteract muscle loss
related to aging and is important
to weight loss since muscle tissue
burns more calories than fat tissue
does whether you are active or
resting (therefore, improving your
metabolism). You don’t need to make
a big deal out of it. A simple routine
at home to start can garter results —
push ups, lunges and planks.
In addition to physical activity,
what and how much you eat and
drink have a big effect. Keep
track of your daily caloric
intake utilizing any one of
the free programs offered
on the internet. It is the
only way to know for
sure that you are not consuming
excess calories. Also your body
is not designed to process large
amounts of food at once, and when
you overeat, your metabolism slows
down. Try to eat smaller meals
spread throughout the day as well
as foods higher in protein which
require more energy to break them
down. However, if you wait too long
to eat, your metabolism will slow
down, believing that food is scarce
and that energy must be conserved.
Staying adequately hydrated can
also keep your metabolism at a
consistently higher level.
It just comes down to physical
activity and your eating habits
to improve your metabolism.
But if you’re worried about your
metabolism, talk to your doctor.
Until Next Time, Keep Fit & Have
Fun.

Abbey’s Kitchen
Easy Eating
Spring Cleaning
It’s been a cold, long and bloated winter, and the
more weeks we endured, the more we ate and
drank. But it’s finally time to retire our eating pants
and bulky sweaters, and slip into short shorts and
beach ware. No need to panic, diet or deprive yourself! Just follow my easy eating spring cleaning
steps and you’ll be feeling fabulous all year long.
BE MINDFUL
OF HUNGER
We tend to let ourselves get
super hungry, and then binge on
everything and anything we see.
To make healthier choices rather
than frantic ones, be mindful
to your hunger and satiety, and
always stay between ¼ and ¾ of
the way full.
EAT BREAKFAST
Start the day with the right fuel
to avoid desperate binges on
high calorie, unsatisfying convenience foods like pastries or bagels. Instead, opt for a breakfast
with a combo of protein, fibre
and healthy fat that will keep you
full until your next meal or snack.

STASH SNACKS
To avoid overeating at meals,
always keep snacks on hand with
around 200 calories and that
same combo of fibre, protein and
fat we talked about. My go-tos

are an ounce of almonds (23 if
your counting), or hummus with
veggies. But even healthy snacks
can lose their smart-snack-stamp
when they’re mindlessly eaten
straight out of the fridge, box or
bag. Always transfer your portion
to a plate, bowl or baggie so you
can control exactly how much
you eat.
PLAN MEALS
When 5 PM rolls along and you
don’t have a dinner plan, it’s easy
to just call in a pizza. On your day
off, plan your weekly meals with a
categorized grocery list. This not
only saves you from spending
calories and cash on take out, but
it also helps curb those impulse
buys of unnecessary high calorie
snacks at the store.
CONTROL
PORTIONS
To downsize without even
noticing, swap your big dinner
sets with smaller ones. A healthy
portion of pasta on a 10” plate
looks satisfying, but you may be
tempted to top it up if served on
a 13” plate. Don’t let your eyes
fool your stomach!
Easy peasy, right? No dieting, no
deprivation, just a quick five step

the winter routine and enjoy the
sassy side of Spring.

Ontario soybeans
Farmers in Ontario will begin planting full-season varieties of soybeans May, or
when weather conditions are adequate. The land needs to be free from snow,
pooling water, and relatively dry so heavy tractors and planters do not compact
the soil. Generally, when the soil temperature is 14-16°C at noon at a depth of
2.5-5cm, the soil conditions are suitable for planting and there is a low risk of
frost after emergence. These conditions will be met in most areas of the
province between May 10th and May 31st.
Soybeans usually take between 95 to 105 days to grow from seed to maturity.
The mature standing soybean crop is harvested with a grain combine in the fall,
usually in October or November. The majority of soybeans grown in Canada
are grown in Ontario, around 80%. The balance is grown mainly in Quebec
and Manitoba. Although soybean production takes place throughout Ontario,
in a wide variety of soil types, the bulk of the crop comes from the southern
portion of the province. Of the 2.5 million acres of soybeans planted across
Ontario in 2012, 1.4 million acres were harvested in southern Ontario.
Ontario soybeans can be found at your local grocery store, in products such as
soy beverages and tofu. Tofu, also known as soybean curd, comes in a variety
of textures, from soft to extra firm. Soft tofu is suitable for dips and creamed
soups. You can also find flavoured tofu products, such as mango or vanilla,
which are great for deserts and smoothies. Firm tofu is dense, solid, and
maintains its shape. It can be sliced or cubed for use in stews or crumbled to
replace ground meat. It is also great for grilling on the BBQ and will absorb the
flavours of the foods it is cooked with. Firm tofu used in the BBQ sandwich
recipe on the next page is a great way to add a meatless option to your next
backyard event. The tofu will take on the flavours of your BBQ sauce and
provide your guests with the protein they need to be energized for the rest of
the day!

BBQ TOFU SANDWICH
INGREDIENTS
• ¼ cup thinly sliced onion
• 14-ounce package extra-firm or firm water-packed tofu, drained
• ⅛ tsp salt
• 1 Tbsp canola oil
• ½ cup prepared barbecue sauce
• 1 ½ cups coleslaw mix (see Note) or finely shredded cabbage
• 2 Tbsp low-fat mayonnaise
• 2 tsp red-wine vinegar
• ¼ tsp garlic powder
• Freshly ground pepper to taste
• 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns, toasted
• 4 dill pickle sandwich slices
DIRECTIONS
1.Place onion in a small bowl, cover with cold water and set
aside. Stand tofu on its long narrow side. Cut lengthwise into 4
rectangular slabs, each about ½-inch thick, and pat dry. Sprinkle
with salt.
2.Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the tofu
slabs (depending on the size of your pan — the tofu may slope
up the sides a little). Cook until browned on both sides, about 4
minutes per side. Reduce heat to low. Add barbecue sauce and
carefully turn the tofu to coat with the sauce. Cover and cook for 3
minutes more.
3.Meanwhile, combine coleslaw (or cabbage), mayonnaise, vinegar,
garlic powder and pepper in a medium bowl. Drain the onion.
4.To assemble sandwiches, place about ⅓ cup of the coleslaw (or
cabbage) mixture on each bun and top with a tofu slab, a pickle
slice and a few onion slices. Spread any sauce remaining in the
pan on the top buns.

My Kind of Beer
with Chris Goddard
The Glory of Craft Brew
Twitter: @Chris__Goddard
(2 underscores) • Email:
[email protected].
As a beer writer and importer of craft beer, my job is pretty sweet. There are many
days that my wife looks at me incredulously and says, “are you actually working or
just having fun?” Sure there are times when I want to pull my hair out — every job has
its challenges — but those days are few and far between and always end with a pint to
help bring everything into perspective.
A
couple of weeks back I attended my first Craft
Brewers’ Conference put on by the Brewer’s
Association. The conference rotates to different
“beer” cities around the US and this year it was held a
mile above sea-level in Denver, Colorado. It’s the who’s
who of US craft beer with a healthy number of Canadian
breweries making the trek, and a handful of folks from
overseas. Sitting in a room of 9,000 people listening to
a State of the Union speech on how craft beer grew in
the US last year was very inspiring, and to hear that they
are on target to meet their goal of being 20% of the beer
market by 2020 brings a tear to this beer lover’s eye.
Predictably, there was beer around every corner at the
convention and expo. Every time you turned around there
was someone reaching their hand out to pass you a beer. I
didn’t like all of the beers I tried — heck, I probably barely
liked half the beers I tried and I like to think I’m pretty
open minded; but I wouldn’t give back one sip of beer.
There were a couple of real stand-out beers that I would
(and did) ask for more.
Here’s a little list of beers to seek out when you are
Stateside:
YETI (Great Divide Brewing Company)
Great Divide is one of Denver’s best breweries and is
a must-see if you head there. Yeti is an imperial stout
that continually gets top honours on beer lists around
the US. At over 9% ABV it packs a punch but goes down
very smooth. They also make an Oak-Aged, Espresso
Oak-Aged and Chocolate Oak-Aged Yeti which are all
amazing. Their Rye Lager, Hoss, was also on my fav. list
from the trip.
FAT TIRE (New Belgium Brewing)
Since I biked around Denver on a cruiser I have to
include Fat Tire. One of Colorado’s best known breweries
and one of the largest in the US, their amber ale is the
type of beer that you can build an empire on. Accessible,
easy drinking and with enough character that you won’t
get bored of it.
SUPPLICATION (Russian River Brewing Company)
Not a brewery from Colorado but probably one of my
favourite beers from the trip. It’s not going to be for
everyone since it’s a sour brown ale that has been aged
for 12 months in Pinot Noir barrels with sour cherries but
if you are looking to expand your horizons, sour beers are
going to do that and Supplication is a great place to start.
One of the best ways to get a feel of a city and its culture
is through their breweries and Denver was no exception.
Next time you head anywhere, find the brewery first and
then plan the rest of your day.
Fire me off a tweet for more beer recommendations!

what makes this part of Ontario
so different from all the others.
This time, the secret is yours to
unfold.
Lambton County’s story
begins 160 years ago as the
birthplace of North America’s
oil industry. Men of the
Aamjiwnanng First Nation first
found the sticky crude in the
black gum beds near today’s Oil
Springs and the early settlers of
New France saw it seeping from
the ground near Enniskillen’s
Black Creek. The first wells
followed in 1851 and North
America’s oil industry was born.
Visitors can relive our Oil
Heritage and embark on a
self-guided driving tour of the
Fairbank Oil Properties Ltd. to
view sculptures depicting the
life of the men who drilled for
oil here in the 1860s. Stop, turn
off your vehicle, roll down the
window and listen to the jerker
line system as it still operates
today. Those who crave more Oil
Heritage are encouraged to visit
the Oil Museum of Canada in
Oil Springs.
Today, Lambton County is
a land of entertaining pursuits,
and a calmer, yet culturally rich
lifestyle that
visitors desire and
seek, leading many
to remain, and to claim Lambton
County for their own. Here lies
scores of alluring experiences
and intriguing discoveries to
savour and enjoy.
Join us on June 21st & 22nd
for Doors Open Lambton County,
a weekend-long experience
where visitors have the opportunity to explore some of the
County’s most intriguing and
charming historical sites. This
year’s Doors Open will celebrate
our community’s centennial
accomplishments, including
the incorporation of the City of
Sarnia in 1914. Each site holds
a piece of Lambton’s past and a
part of its future. For information

MAY 21 – JUNE 21: It’s time to make your own
rules. If your wish is to be as independent as
one can be, then you must carve your own path.
No one is going to do it for; you have to think
for yourself. Your level of satisfaction depends
on how much effort you put forth. Don’t be
afraid to venture out of your comfort zone.
JUNE 22 – JULY 23: Put more thought
into important decisions rather than making
impulsive decisions. You have to remember
that these decisions could directly affect
your future. Think back and learn from any
mistakes you’ve made in the past. This will
help you in the future.
JULY 24 – AUGUST 22: Try to avoid very
stressful situations if possible. You are strong,
and setbacks or changes in plans are nothing
you can’t handle. Remember to take some time
for yourself, relax, and restore your peace of
mind. Mental health is very important for you
during the coming months.
AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22: Nature isn’t
the only thing that will flourish with the warm
weather; it’s your time to grow and shine as
well. Take the positive energy you have and try
to turn it into something that will benefit you.
Exercise and eating well are great first steps to
a better and longer future!
SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22: Get
inspired! Find out what moves you; what makes
your heart flutter, what makes you smile, what
makes you feel like you’ve never felt before.
You have a gift and it’s time to find out what
that special gift is. Work and possessions don’t
define you, only you define you.
OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 22: Summer
is coming, so you should try to minimize your
schedule. Slow down, enjoy the balmy weather,
let the sun shine on your skin, and forget
all your worries — even if it’s just for a few
minutes. It’ll do you some good to take time
for yourself and let the world go on.

NOVEMBER 23 – DECEMBER 20: Being
the center of attention is going to be a big
thing for you in the coming weeks. Don’t be
afraid to take advantage of it. Book a little bit
of vacation time and go somewhere exotic
where you will really get noticed. It’s time for
some fun and excitement in your life!
DECEMBER 21 – JANUARY 20: You’re
going to have to deal with some change in your
life. At times it will get scary or overwhelming,
but try to keep a positive outlook. Change is
almost always for the better, and things will get
easier for you as time goes on. Keep an open
mind and put your best food forward.
JANUARY 21 – FEBRUARY 19: You are
starting to become more disconnected with
your day-to-day life. You’re going to have to
find yourself again, and try to find joy in the
things you do. Start trying new things and
maybe adding something new to your daily
routine, you’ll notice a difference in no time.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 – MARCH 21: Naturally, you
are a leader with a strong personality. You’re
going to have to start backing down from time
to time and open your mind to other people’s
thoughts and suggestions. If you don’t you will
start to notice people distancing themselves
from you.
ARIES
MARCH 22 – APRIL 19: It’s time to pay up!
This month is focused on financial obligations
and responsibility. Start your spring-cleaning
by going through your belongings. Decide what
you want to sell, what you no longer need, and
what you want to donate. This will help you with
your finances and it will help you get organized.
