FROM THE HELM
VALENTINE’S DINNER
Love was in the air…….
Spring is just around the corner!
Awash in romantic hues of red, pink and mauve,
our Yacht Club was transformed into a romantic
bistro for the annual Valentine’s Dinner held on
Saturday, February 11th. Fresh flowers, white table
cloths, candles and other heart shaped accent pieces
provided the transformation. The sold out crowd
dined on Steak Diane or Salmon Buerre Blanc
prepared by Special Events Catering. Although no
stories of “grand passion” were shared, everyone had
a great time. A special thanks goes to Georgia
Ysselstein for planning the decorations and to the
volunteers who carried out Georgia’s vision. The
volunteers were Kay Burns, Cynthis Ramseyer,
Karen Hampton, Phyllis Smith, Sirje Bewley and
Barb Dinnsen.
By the time you read this, we will have
had a busy beginning to March. The Tuscan
Crab Fest on Saturday, March 4th and the
Academy Awards Night on Sunday, March
5th. Coming up this month is an Open
House to the public on Sunday, March 19th
and our first General Membership meeting
of the year on Saturday, March 25th at 3:00
p.m. Please plan to attend and stay for the
potluck after the meeting. Bring a dish to
share and the Club will have steak and
chicken for a small cost.
Our biggest events, Memorial Day, Labor
Day and Pumpkin Festival will be here
before we know it. This wonderful club is
run totally by it’s members and we need all
of you to make these big events work.
Please take a look at your calendars now and
set time aside to help where you can.
NEW MEMBERS
We would like welcome the following new
members who recently joined our Yacht Club.
Please seek them out and introduce yourselves.
Frank and Silvia Casey
Martha Tingle and Mark McDonnell
Abigayle Fenn

If we all work together, we might even
find it’s fun! See you at the Club!

TUSCAN MARINADE CRAB FEED
SUNDAY, MARCH 5
On Saturday, March 4th the Half Moon Bay
Yacht Club will be having its annual Crab Feed
Fundraiser, but this year the crab will be prepared
Tuscan style with a fabulous garlic and herb
marinade. Please invite family, friends, and
colleagues as we need to sell 100 dinners. In
addition to the crab, we will serve salad, garlic
bread and dessert for $35 per person. The fun
begins at 4:00 p.m. with a no-host bar, and then
dinner at 5:00 p.m.
Directed by Veronica Ciari and Phyllis Smith
Produced by the Party Princess Group
Starring YOU! among the Glitterati
Put on your Tiara and OSCAR de la Renta (knock-off),
prepare your OSCAR acceptance speech, and bring an
OSCAR hors d’oeuvre to share at the HMBYC on
Sunday, March 5th. The champagne and hot chocolate
will be flowing. Red carpet festivities will begin at
4:00 p.m. with a private screening of the Award
Winning Sundance Festival Animated Short, “Fumi
and the Bad Luck Foot”. So deck yourself up and join
the fun (Hollywood Chic attire not required). With any
luck we will have a new surround system installed on
our Big Screen, so we will actually be able to hear the
acceptance speeches. See you there!

Please mark your calendars for Sunday, March 19th
from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the first new member
drive of the year. We are looking for many volunteers
to make this day a great success. We need members to
greet, inform, and entertain our prospective members.
In addition, we are looking for volunteers to help
provide refreshments by bringing appetizers. Please
email Claudia Linhares at [email protected] to
volunteer to bring a snack, and Marie Parfitt-Pattie at
[email protected] for volunteering your time.
Watch for advertisements in the HMB Review starting
in March, and an article about the Club written by
Michelle Harris to appear in the March 15th issue of the
Review. Encourage your friends and acquaintances to
come and see what a great place we have in the Half
Moon Bay Yacht Club!
The proceeds from this fund raiser will get our
docks back in the water sooner than later! So
come on down! Bring your friends have a good
time while supporting the cause! Think of how
cute you and your friends will look in “crab
motive” bibs while getting down and dirty with
the cracked crab. YUMMMMM

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
The first General Membership meeting is going to be held on Saturday, March 25th at 3:00 p.m. Please
mark your calendars to make sure you attend this meeting. This is your opportunity to find out what
issues are coming up this year for the Club. In particular, the status of the new building and what needs
to happen to make that a reality. This is truly an “all hands” meeting and everyone is encouraged to
attend and have your voice heard.
Mavericks 2006 – The Best Seats In The House!
By Neil Hooper
Watching the Mavericks Surf Competition from the land is exciting. Being out on the water looking the
monster in the eye is another thing again.
This year several HMBYC members dropped everything on February 7th and picked their way through seas
large enough to be breaking across the marked channel to reach the viewing area.
On the keelboating front Neal Wehtje’s Megistus gave Carol Smith and friends the best seats in the house,
while Urs Williman went solo in Attitude. At the other end of the scale Adam Quest and friend made it out in
a rubber inflatable (and promptly boarded Megistus), while Neil Hooper, Marcus Choy and friends paddled
out in their sea kayaks.
There’s no dropping anchor and putting your feet up out here. You’re mixing it with a mass of other craft:
big party boats, photographer launches, personal watercraft and bobbing surfers, all continually maneuvering
to stay on station within spitting distance of the mighty face itself without overstepping the buoy-marked
safety line or unwittingly drifting into the breaks at Sail Rock.
Imagine the Safeway lot on Saturday morning with tour buses, cars and bicycles all circling together, no
fixed parking bays, and everyone looking off to one side. Kudos to the cat-herders of the Harbor Patrol who
managed to keep this huge, distracted group in safe waters with good grace all round.
The view down the tube of Mavericks is indeed spectacular, as one would expect, but what many of us
remember is the unique sound close-up, a sharp, crackling boom as thousands of tons water smash down,
huge volumes of air are crushed, and the mixture explodes back out from itself.
That, and we remember we are so small, the ocean so powerful.
On the lower tide, the return leg seemed even livelier than the journey out, with the #3 buoy taking
occasional hits of white water. Many vessels gave it a wide berth to the south and took an inshore route back
to the jaws.Good move!!
An exciting day on the water, and we are privileged to have had a view few may enjoy. And, indeed, it is not
a trip for the inexperienced. But is it dangerous? Let’s just say I feel a lot safer on the shoulder of Mavericks
than clinging halfway up the crumbling rock face at Pillar Point!
