The Bemrose School is a mixed secondary school in
Derbyshire with 685 students. The school made their application
through Derby City Council and are using their first Salix 100%
interest-free loan of £20,559 to reduce their energy costs per pupil by
over £4 per annum by upgrading their lighting. This is how they did it.
Project overview
The Bemrose School used a Salix
loan to upgrade their lighting system,
by installing new lighting and lighting
controls. The school wanted to save
energy, reduce their carbon footprint
and set an example to demonstrate
what other schools can achieve. the
new lighting system will save the school
55% compared to their old fittings and
the lighting controls will save them an
additional 25%. This project will be
repaid from the savings in 7 years.

The Bemrose School’s
Business Case
The Bemrose School was looking to
find an effective way to drive down
energy bills by reducing their energy
consumption. They have achieved
this by lowering the cost of energy
per pupil by over £4 per annum.
The establishment of the Salix
Schools Loans Scheme Programme,
funded by the Department for
Education, has made these changes
possible. The Salix Schools Loans
Scheme Programme is available to all
schools within England and there is
no maximum sum that each school
can apply for.

Why Salix?
The Salix solution
Salix and the school
A Salix 100% interest-free £20,559
capital-finance loan and client support
offered The Bemrose School a cost
and resource effective solution. The
Salix project compliance tool showed
financial savings from improving their
lighting and installing lighting controls
throughout the school and allowed
the school to achieve a payback of less
than 7 years. Once the project has paid
back, The Bemrose School will go on
to benefit from over £2,944 in annual
energy cost savings.
The Salix solution funded a lighting
upgrade, as well as the installation of
lighting controls. This provided a more
energy-efficient solution to the
original lighting The Bemrose School
had and will provide long term savings
for the school.
The Salix Schools Loans Scheme
Programme has provided The
Bemrose School to lower their energy
consumption and carbon footprint.
This is just one of the projects that
The Bemrose School is focusing on to
decrease their environmental impact
and raise awareness throughout the
school. They actively recycle and
discuss ecological issues at their weekly
school council meetings.

“We understand the need to save energy, reduce
our carbon footprint and recognise that in today’s
challenging financial climate, Salix funding offers a
realistic and affordable means of funding projects which,
despite their environmental and economic impact,
would not have otherwise been financially viable.”
