Newell, California / (Tule Lake): The Associated Students of Tri-State High 1944
$2800
Quarto. 77, [11]pp. Illustrated from drawings and photographs. Illustrated plastic spiral bound wrappers. Fine. High
school yearbook issued by students attending school at the Tule Lake Internment Camp for Japanese Americans.
According to the staff of this high school annual: “In spite of wartime shortages, a lack of funds, and other
difficulties peculiar to center life, “The Aquila,” the high school annual, has finally been published.” An engaging
and typical high school yearbook, form a very untypical high school. The Tule Lake Segregation Center was one of
ten camps built to house interned Japanese Americans during World War Two. Of the ten such camps built, Tule
Lake was the largest and most controversial, housing draft resisters and Japanese American who were considered the
most disloyal. After the war it became a holding area for Japanese Americans slated for deportation or expatriation
to Japan, including some who had renounced their United States citizenship under duress. Rare. OCLC locates no
copies. [BTC#406985]
