Whiting Refinery Modernization Project
Whiting Refinery Modernization Project
About the project

BP is investing several billion dollars to modernize its Whiting Refinery in
Northwest Indiana. This is the biggest private sector investment ever in Indiana.

The Whiting Refinery Modernization Project (‘WRMP’) increases the refinery
heavy oil processing capability by reconfiguring the largest of 3 crude distillation
units and adding new coking capacity and associated processing units.

The modernized refinery will provide Whiting with the capability of processing
up to about 85% heavy crude, versus about 20% today.

The WRMP will competitively re-position Whiting Refinery, with the goal of
making it the premier refinery in North America.

The modernization is helping to sustain roughly 1850 jobs at the refinery.

The project is also contributing thousands of temporary contractor jobs to the
community. Hundreds of contractor jobs will continue to be needed for routine
maintenance work and ‘turnarounds’ – following the modernization.

The project is generating significant indirect benefits for local and other U.S.
businesses, and is contributing significantly to the government tax base for the
funding of schools, environmental protection, and many other essential
government services.

The WRMP is the largest, most complex refining project undertaken in BP’s
recent history. Almost every processing unit is being modified to some degree.

We are installing 380 miles of pipe, 1200 pieces of major equipment, 600
shop-fabricated modules, and 50,000 tons of steel.
Status

BP management is pleased with the safe and steady progress being made on
the WRMP. As of August 2012, the project is about 70% complete. All modules
for the modernized refinery are now in place. Construction began in May of
2008 and peaks summer 2012 with more than 8,000 contractors onsite. (For
context, the population of the City of Whiting, Indiana is about 5,000).

The modernized refinery is scheduled to come on-stream in the second half of
2013.

Petroleum Coker
BP Whiting Refinery is building a new state-of-the-art coker to replace the existing
one. The new coker will enhance process safety through increased automation,
increase petroleum coke production, and produce more naphtha.
This is the 2nd largest delayed coker in the world – about 102,000 barrels per day
throughput.

Gas Oil Hydro Treater
This modern world-scale hydrotreater will remove more sulfur and nitrogen from gas
oil at BP Whiting Refinery.
