Dance distribution, production and creation intersect at La danse sur les routes du Québec,
an organization that supports the improvement and the growth of dance distribution on
the Quebec territory.
Perspectives on
La danse sur les routes du Québec
In the early 90’s, most of our great choreographers presented theirs
shows in Montreal and Quebec City, and then flew to other continents.
Started by Regroupement québécois de la danse in 1997, La danse
sur les routes du Québec (DSR) ensures the presence of dance
in tens of cities across the province today and gives thousands
of citizens access to it. Since it was founded, DSR and its network
of partners have brought forth more than 1,400 dance performances
and 2,400 discovery activities. Both also made dance accessible
to 950,000 people and generated 5.3 million dollars in artist fees
for companies and artists.
Among other actions that La danse sur les routes establishes
to fulfill its mission, DSR designs and organizes Parcours Danse,
a major event that allows dance and distribution communities
to meet.

For three decades, Quebec has distinguished itself worldwide by
the excellence of its dance creations. This is why, since 1997, La danse
sur les routes du Québec makes sure that citizens of the province also
have access to this fabulous art form. Today, we can celebrate dance
displays in tens of cities: in venues, public spaces, on the screen, and
many more. Festivals that are dedicated to dance come to life, and artists
allow thousands of citizens to experience unforgettable performances.
Dance distribution is booming in Quebec, and Parcours Danse has clearly
been playing a centre part by offering a meeting opportunity to artists,
producers and presenters from Quebec, Canada and, for the first time
this year, abroad. If Parcours Danse has reached such stature in 2015,
it is thanks to the exceptional solidarity among artists and collaborators,
who share their expertise, open theirs doors and help support its realization. Thus, it is on their behalf that I invite you to enjoy this rich program
that includes nothing less than 130 artists and 80 presenters, from 60 cities
worldwide, along with several players of the artistic community, all that in
ten locations of the metropolis.

With Ravages, Alan Lake continues to hybridize film,
choreography and sculpture. He mixes disciplines and
weaves an abstract narrative that invites the audience to
plunge into the raw and frail universe of a symbolic tale
where the human being is confronted with short-lived
or immutable realities. Throughout the choreography,
bodies collide with bad weather. Inspired by the mysterious
power of nature, Ravages is an ever-changing scenery
where bodies take part in the great cycles of life and
the word.
Based in Quebec City, Alan Lake
Factori(e) is a multidisciplinary
contemporary dance company that
rests on Alan Lake, choreographer,
dancer, director and visual arts
artist. His approach can be divided
into three fields of research: dance,
film and visual arts.
With the passing of time, the
evocation of the cycle of life and
death has become a major thread
running through his whole process.

sent by ships and airplanes. Used
since the early 20th century, this
term was probably borrowed from
the French for “Come help me!”

images unique to MAYDAY that
becomes resolved when meeting
with the audience.
Since it was founded in 2007,
MAYDAY has been used as a platform to exchange ideas and reflections with the artists that surround
Mélanie Demers. They come from
Montreal, the company’s home
base, or abroad and are as dazzling

Although time has no gasp on José Navas’ magnetism
and the admiration of the Quebec audience, the artist
carries the trace of entering the fifties. With this new solo
show, he looks back on his journey and reaps the fruits of
maturity, revealing the fragility of a man who is aware of
his finite nature. With Schubert, Dvořák and Nina Simone,
he watches the years pass by, thinks back on his love stories,
and seeks peace of the heart. With Stravinski, he proclaims
his undying passion for dance with The Rite of Spring.

“Being a body is a performance in itself.”
Zab Maboungou’s inspiration runs deep, from the African
rhythms that she explores tirelessly to draw out the very
shape of her works. Her choreographic pieces work likewise rhythmical devices that aim at “distributing” time and
movement. Mozongi, Retour, functions as the physics of
time: steps are the weight and the weight is time. Mozongi
was awarded the 30th Conseil des arts de Montréal
Dance Prize.

engage in outlining the poetic power,
inseparable from the intelligence
of movement, that comes from
the physical art form, bodies and
rhythms. Described as powerful
and mesmerizing on several occasions, Zab Maboungou’s choreographic works ooze physical and
mental strength, which seizes
and unleashes our imagination.
The rhythmical element is both
used as matter and canvas to
create the works. Her energetically
vibrant physical vocabulary along
with its undeniable contemplative
power claims and questions
the onstage space occupied by
musicians and dancers. Pushed by
a cultural and artistic action that is
inseparable from her works, Nyata

Intimidation and cyberbullying are growing phenomena
in our society, and the cause of recent dramatic news items
involving young people. A four-dancer dialogue created in
collaboration with playwright Gervais Gaudreault, the work
deals with the themes intimidation and intolerance at
the heart of teenage life ruled by social media, with humour
and sensibility. Through martial arts, contemporary and
Indian dance, Sinha Danse contributes to foster awareness
among young people, families and school communities.

This work isn’t finished yet, but it aims at setting the stage
for dance through love at its peak. Complicity, desire,
passion, and eroticism: a tribute to the exquisite alchemy
of the heart and the body. But how long does it last?
In time, pain from a sense of loss, when everything
suddenly dies and becomes waiting, jealousy and anxiety,
will counterbalance the equation.

some great figures of Quebec’s dance history and some
young choreographers. The life experience of the former

An adaptable dissemination project, Pluton offers a journey

memories and movement filiations.

Haunted by the fear of repeating the same patterns and of a
rambling physical vocabulary, vivacious choreographer Dominique Porte questions the way she approaches creation. For
this new solo, she works with about thirty people to whom she
has given a choreographic phrasing. She asks each of them
to perform it, in their own way. She takes on these scattered
fragments that she records on video. Thanks to this consensual identity theft, to all these beings that nourish her and that
she cannibalizes, she redefines her own boundaries. Through
the figure of Other people, she incarnates the rhythm and the
variations of all these bodies, thus defying her own dance.
Based in Montreal since 1989,
Dominique Porte continues her
choreographic work by challenging

Now living in France, the Greek choreographer seeks
inspiration from bustling city life and wears bodies out to
celebrate human beings and their creative power. On a
quest for beauty, he sails between order and chaos, and
throws the dancers into space with a range of movement
that calls for a unifying, liberating and joyful dance.

For Brazilian Rodrigo Pederneiras, dance is a means of
expression that allows individuals and nations alike to convey
their identity. His style blends capoeira, samba, forró, ballroom
dancing and classical ballet. This time, he pays tribute
to the resilience of Aboriginal people and their cultural
legacy with a percussive, tribal and visceral dance, filled
with impetuosity and energy. Ceaseless confrontations
and tests of strength keep up on relentless musical
rhythms with cultural references to the Native American
heritage, composed by Quebec duo Les frères Grand.

A close-up of the couple. Male, female and mixed duets take the stage, one after the other. Rolled hips and
wrapped thighs. Bodies embrace, fly away in acrobatic
and tender lifts, and crumble under the weight of scorn.
The nature of the bond is visible in the eyes, in the tensions
of the flesh, in the quality of the contact. Modesty, passion,
indifference, affection, and craving speak to the rhythm
of baroque harpsichords and violins, and 1970’s pop rock.
Strength, gracefulness, and emotion go hand in hand in
the technical exploit of this demanding dance.

Unrelated is a choreographic work about the struggle
of Aboriginal women. This dark choreography sheds light
on the cruelty and the vulnerability that these women

Of unsettling lucidity, Unrelated is steeped in a strong
sense of vacuity that bursts into violence and suggests
the loss of culture, identity and community.

Jamais seule seeks inspiration from the movement vocabulary of tetraplegic performer France Geoffroy. Created in
close collaboration with Sophie Michaud and videomaker
L E M M, this autobiographical work is rooted in a strong
desire for self-expression, which is embodied in a relentless back-and-forth between the past and the now. While
the limitations and possibilities of dance become visible,
where emotion-filled and striking gestures intersect with
poetic and revealing images, Jamais seule shows a modest
yet irreverent perspective on another reality.
In 1997, France Geoffroy pursues a DEC
in art while studying improvisation
and the Bartenieff technique with
Valérie Dean. She also furthers
her training at the UQAM Dance
Department where she meets
Sophie Michaud, who will be by
her side for 18 years as artistic
advisor and rehearsal director,
to help her deepen her role as
performer. Her participation at
London’s CandoCo Integrated
Dance Company training courses
indisputably motivated her to found
her own company, Corpuscule Danse,
in 2000. She is the company’s artistic
