Field effect transistor (fet)
Transformer output
Transformerless output (TLM)
Preattenuation (pad)
– Transducer element which converts acoustical to electrical signal
– Large diameter capsules (~30mm) emphasize character and sensitivity
– Small diameter capsules (~22mm) provide less coloration and widely frequency independent directivity
– Amplified by a vacuum tube, associated with “classic” sound
– Amplified by transistor circuitry
– Output circuitry with a transformer, for galvanic isolation and optimum balancing
– Output circuitry without a transformer, for higher maximum sound pressure levels
– Reduces the transducer sensitivity and thus the output level, shifts the dynamic range to higher sound pressure levels
Roll-off (high pass filter)
Directional characteristic (polar pattern)
Remote
Switchable
– Allows only frequencies above a limit frequency to pass; reduces pops, wind & handling noise; compensates proximity effect for close miking
– Describes the angle dependant sensitivity
– Microphone with remotely switchable multiple polar patterns
– Microphone with switchable multiple polar patterns

Hypercardioid
Figure Eight (Bidirectional)
Shotgun (Lobe)
– Picks up sound equally from all directions
Diffuse-field equalized: With flat response in the diffuse field, for distant recording
Free-field equalized: With flat on-axis response, for close miking
– Slight directivity towards the front half-space
– Directive, with minimum sensitivity from the rear
– More directive, with highest front-to-rear half-space sensitivity ratio
– Still more directive, for maximum isolation between neighboring sound sources
– Bidirectional sensitivity, shaped like a figure 8
– Highest directivity, through interference tube (shotgun) design

Neumann – A sound decision.
An ambitious audio studio without Neumann? That is hard
to imagine. With good reason, audio engineers worldwide
consider Neumann microphones the benchmark for professional audio technology. Over the decades, many products
in the history of the company have become classics in the
development of this field. While other electronics companies
struggle with imitations from the Far East, for Neumann,
Asia is a dynamic growth market.
The subtle differences, which in the end can be decisive, are
appreciated not only by audio engineers. Among the great
musicians of recent decades it is difficult to find any artists
who have not used Neumann microphones. The significance of
Neumann in the music scene makes it impossible to provide
a comprehensive ABC of users here. Bryan Adams? American
Idol? The Beatles? Beyoncé?
Natalie Cole? Celine Dion? Tokio Hotel? No matter what style
or epoch you prefer, to find users of these high-end products
from Berlin the best approach is to begin simply by listing
your own favorite musicians.
