A MESSAGE FROM OUR
PASTORAL ASSOCIATE, MICHAEL BEARD
Dear Friends,
A blessed Pentecost to you all! We have reached
the end of the Easter season and now return to
‘Ordinary Time.’ One of my favorite images of the
nascent Christian community is the one that Luke
gives us at the beginning of Acts of the Apostles.
The image of those huddled together in the upper
room receiving the Holy Spirit and bursting out
the door to proclaim Good News, so powerful, so
real, so intense that all who heard it could understand it in their native tongue is incredible to me.
I never explicitly considered ‘Ordinary Time’ as
‘harvest time’ until I made that connection. As we
enter into Ordinary Time, we enter into a time
ordered and seasoned by the mysteries we have
recalled this year.
We continue to receive
nourishment from our sacramental life together.
Then, having been steeped in the life, death and
resurrection of Jesus and the Holy Spirit’s
embrace, we are called to order our lives in such a
way as befits the time of harvest.
Christianity has a long history of seeing this as a
reversal of the tale of Babel in Genesis. Humanity
relied on their own resources to assert their
presence and power to the cosmos; Christ, though
he was in the form of God, did not consider
equality with God something to be grasped.
Humanity’s tower at Babel represented a rift
between God and humanity; Christ’s ascension
and sending of the Holy Spirit signifies a powerful
intimacy between God and humanity. Babel
showed that unity springing from spite, arrogance
and hatred leaves humanity divided, humiliated
and fractured; Pentecost shows that unity in the
love of God, the Gospel of the Risen Christ—real
love for God and neighbor—can overcome
divisions that have persisted through evil. It’s a
salient reality and reflection for any generation.
In the spirit of laboring for and celebrating the
harvest, there are a couple of events I would like to
call to your attention. The first is in the spirit of
service: Many couples who seek to baptize their
children come to our door. Preparing them to
raise their children in the faith is a wonderful way
to proactively live out our Pentecost call. If you
and your spouse have baptized your children and
are interested in helping us with baptismal
preparation or for more information, please
contact me and see our posting on page 6.
That said, there’s another image that didn’t catch
my eye for many years: the harvest. Plentiful
abundance in food and drink come to mind.
Having participated in harvests, I know there’s
work that comes with it: the harvest is a labor that
is celebrated during and after. The reason so many
people were gathered from all over the greater
Mediterranean and Near-East on the day of
Pentecost was precisely to celebrate the gathering
of the harvest. How appropriate, then, that God’s
harvest commences as the land’s harvest emerges.

A FOND FAREWELL TO SAINT ANNE FROM FR. TOM BISHOP
For the last eight years, I have had the privilege of ministering to the people of Saint
Anne. It has been eight years of growth, fun and many challenges. I’ve had the
honor to work with Fr. Jack for two years and Fr. Bernie for the last six years. But
as the saying goes, ‘All good things must come to an end.’
Fr. Bernie has managed to have me extended here for three extra and wonderful
years. But the Personnel Board has said no more extensions. As of Friday, July 1st,
I will be moving on to a new assignment in the Archdiocese. At this time, I do not
know where that will be.
I am humbled by the great people at Saint Anne. Your generosity with time and
talent and treasure has taught me so much about how God works with and through
his people. I will take with me all that you have taught me to my next assignment.
It has been wonderful working with the School, the Religious Education Program,
the Human Concerns Commission, the Sharing Board, the Ministry of Care, the
Scouts, the Community Events and wherever I have been privileged to share my
gifts and talents with the Parish. I will truly miss all of you.
Fr. Bernie has arranged a weekend farewell on the weekend of June 11th-12th. I will speak at all the
Masses and after the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Masses, there will be a reception in the School Gym. They tell me
we will be having more than donut holes.
I will leave Saint Anne a better person and a better priest because of all that you have shared over the last
eight years. I ask that you NOT expect the new Associate Pastor to do the things I have done. He will
bring his own gifts and talents to share with all of you. And I know that you will welcome him as you
welcomed me.
Thank you, Saint Anne, for all you have allowed me do in service to the Lord. I will miss you and keep
you always in my prayer.
Fr. Tom Bishop

Faith Formation and Education
The Saint Anne RCIA is throwing its first ever RCIA Reunion! We will celebrate all who have participated
in this foundational ministry over the years. Whether you went through this process as a catechumen or
candidate, participated as a sponsor, served on the team or gave a presentation, we want to celebrate you!
Please join us on Friday, May 20th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Biltmore Country Club. Reconnect with old
friends, make new ones and see how the Spirit has been active in the Saint Anne community throughout
the years. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and limited bar will be available. Please R.S.V.P. to Michael
Beard at 847.620.3070 or at [email protected] by Monday, May 16th.
To get to Biltmore, take Barrington Road to Signal Hill Road (1st right after Route 22). Turn right on
Signal Hill and go two blocks to Biltmore Drive. Turn left and go one block to the Clubhouse on the
left. Please use valet parking.
To proclaim the mercy of God to the entire
world seems like a monumental task. How
do you reach 7.4 billion people to share with
them God’s promise of love and mercy for
all, saints and sinners alike?
A very simple way to think about this would
be for each of the one billion Catholics in the
world to bring God’s message to seven or
eight different people in order to reach everyone. Efficient, yes; effective, probably not.
Imagine, though, if each of us lived God’s
mercy every day and with each person with
whom we come in contact.
Consider the reach and power of that
proclamation.
What seemed to be a
monumental task suddenly becomes very
doable.

First Eucharist Celebrations
During the early weekends of May, 120 of our children received their First Eucharist.
These celebrations were filled with great joy as family, friends and parish community
were witness to these children fully participating in the Mass for the first time.
Families were very excited as they arrived,
many with special items such as
prayer books and rosaries to be blessed.
Through the readings and his homily, Father Bernie brought the children to deeper understanding
of the significance of the gift that Jesus gave to us all in the breaking of the bread with his disciples.

First Eucharist Celebrations
Father Bernie called the children to
the altar to witness the consecration.
Their parents, families and friends
took great care in preparing the children
to come to the table of the Lord.
The children were all so excited to
receive Jesus for the first time!
A special thank you to our pastor, priests, deacons, liturgists, musicians, catechists,
teachers, Eucharistic Ministers, ushers, administrative staff and all
who shared their time and talents to make these celebrations joy-filled and inspirational!

Jubilee of Mercy
Pentecost: May 14th-15th
An Invitation to join Archbishop Cupich in renewing the Archdiocese of Chicago
As Pope Francis recently remarked, we are living not only in an era of change but a change of era. This is a
time to dream big. That is why we have launched Renew My Church, a pastoral planning process
designed to bring those dreams to life and to strengthen the vitality of our parishes for generations to
come. Just as the Holy Spirit filled the disciples at the first Pentecost and sent them on mission, the Holy
Spirit is with us today, calling us to a new Pentecost to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ in a fresh way
to the world. This work belongs to every parish and every Catholic across the Archdiocese.
On this Pentecost day, Archbishop Cupich is inviting us to join him in making real this dream of vibrant
parishes that live out the Gospel and share the love of Christ in word and deed. It will take a steady faith –
a faith that is imaginative, that trusts that Christ is leading us and empowering us to make bold decisions
that will shape the Church for generations to come.
At the heart of this process is the demand to read the signs of the times and discern where Christ is calling
us to fulfill his mission. There are challenges: decreasing Mass attendance, treasured church buildings in
need of repair, declining numbers of priests, religious, deacons and lay ministers as many move towards
retirement.
Addressing this situation will require prayer, humility, hard work, creativity, tough choices and new
sacrifices. It is true that by the time this consultative process is complete, we will mourn together the loss
of some parishes. But that will not be the final word. By having the boldness to leave behind familiar
ways of doing things, we can seize the moment as one not simply of loss but rather of renewal.
Renewal comes from placing Christ at the center of the community and accompanying each other on this
journey toward missionary discipleship. Rooted in Christ and strengthened by sacramental grace and the
bonds of fellowship, the Church in Chicago will grow joyfully and fruitfully in response to Christ’s call to
‘Renew My Church.’ Therefore, Renew My Church will have at its core a strong focus on mission. The
goal will be to ensure that local parishes have the support they need to strengthen their faith communities
and live out our missionary call in ever more vibrant ways.
Why is this process called Renew My Church?
As St. Francis of Assisi was praying in the Church of San Damiano, he heard Christ speak to him: “Go,
repair my Church.” Eventually, St. Francis realized that Christ was calling him to renew the Church—not
only as a physical structure but as the w ho le peo p le o f Go d . The dying and rising of Christ continue to
take place in every age in the dying and rising of the Church. We must take up the mission of proclaiming
Christ as a Church whose community is united and whose focus is on the renewal that comes through the
Resurrection.
10
Saint Anne Church • May 15, 2016 • stannebarrington.org
What will happen next? When will my parish be affected?
All parishes across the archdiocese will be part of ‘groupings’ for pastoral planning. Within a grouping,
parishes will come together to gather information and evaluate options for the pastoral needs of the local
area. They will all have a say.
Admittedly, the end result of this planning will differ according to the mission priorities, needs and
realities of the Church in that area. The goal is to have a vibrant Catholic presence that reflects responsible
stewardship of our collective resources: the gifts of lay people, deacons, religious and lay ecclesial
ministers, our priest personnel, finances and buildings. For some groupings, the results will include
changes to parish configurations including potentially fewer parishes. For other groupings, parish
configurations may not change, but parishes will be expected to plan for enhanced collaboration with one
another and to identify how they may further support parishes in other areas of the archdiocese.
We will begin this fall with a ‘pilot’ program involving a small number of groupings and anticipate we
will refine the Renew My Church grouping planning process based on learnings from these pilots.
Subsequent groupings will then enter into a focused planning effort over the course of the next two to
three years.
Who will make decisions?
Representatives from each parish will form a Grouping Planning Committee to gather information and
evaluate options for the pastoral needs of the local area. The Grouping Planning Committee will make
preliminary recommendations to an Archdiocesan Planning Commission comprised of leaders who
represent the diverse backgrounds, skills and experiences of Church that mark the Archdiocese. The
Archdiocesan Planning Commission will review the recommendations.
If the preliminary
recommendations are accepted, they will be forwarded to Archbishop Cupich for consultation with the
Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council. After consulting with the Presbyteral Council, Archbishop Cupich will
make the final decisions.
What is expected of me as a Catholic in the Archdiocese of Chicago?
Remain hopeful and open to ways to share, contribute and collaborate throughout the process of Renew
My Church. Archbishop Cupich has invited us to pray for wisdom, discernment and courage as we begin pastoral
planning through Renew My Church. Please use the prayer cards available beginning on Pentecost to
pray at home with your families, at parish meetings and in other community groups. We will continue to
recite this prayer during Mass periodically across the Archdiocese.
When will we know the results of the survey?
Thank you to the more than 30,000 Catholics who responded to the recent online survey and the
thousands who mailed in a response via paper copy. Archdiocesan staff is in process of inputting paper
responses. Initial results will be shared this summer.
A final word
This will be hard work. But, what in life worth doing does not involve hard work? The immigrants who
built our churches, schools, hospitals and charitable agencies were not daunted by the prospect of hard
work. Neither should we be daunted as we begin this new springtime for the Church, this new Pentecost,
this change of era.

Sharing the Living Story
By Clem Aseron
(A) Lectionary texts: http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/051516.cfm
(B) Bible texts (has verse #): http://www.usccb.org/bible/books-of-the-bible/index.cfm
PENTECOST SUNDAY, 2016 (63B)
First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11
Responsorial Psalm: 104:1ab, 24ac, 29b-30, 31, 34.
RX = Lord, send out your spirit and renew the face of the earth.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13
Gospel: John 20:19-23
Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below.
One usual approach to the text from Acts is to focus on the coming of the Holy Spirit who rendered
intelligible the proclamation o f the m ighty acts o f Go d (Acts 2:11c) made in different languages to all the
varied people who had come fro m every natio n und er heaven (Acts 2:5); recall that theophanies
(manifestations of God) were always accompanied by graphic natural phenomena like a stro ng d riving
wind (Acts 2:2b, compare Job 38:1) and fire (Acts 2:3, compare Exodus 3:2; 19:16 ff). In the John pericope1, the
same Spirit gives the disciples the power to forgive sin and the debts attached to those sins (Jn 20:23). If
you take into account the social situation in which the followers of Jesus find themselves in this time and
also recall the cultural and religious background of the Jewish feast of Pentecost, a broader biblical context
emerges that challenges our present understanding of church community.
Pentecost (Shavuot) or Feast of Weeks has its origin in an agricultural observance that required that the
first fruits of the harvest be offered to God (Exodus 23:16a). Comparing the following two passages from
Leviticus echoes what we remember about the God who disdains symbolic gestures (Hebrews 10:8) – the
offering of grain is not enough!
Shavuot (Lev 23:15-16)
Beginning with the day after the Sabbath, the day on which you bring the wave-offering sheaf, you shall count
seven full weeks … then you shall present the new cereal offering to the Lord.
Jubilee (Lev 25:8-10)
Seven weeks of years shall you count … This fiftieth year, you shall make sacred by proclaiming liberty in the
land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you when every one of you shall return to his own property,
every one to his own family estate.
In the second passage quoted above, the Lord commands Israel to apply Jubilee economics to the harvest:
This fiftieth year, you shall make sacred by proclaiming liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. Look at the
implications for us: At Acts 2:41, Luke’s story of the coming of the Spirit culminates in the addition of
many to the group of baptized but note the radical re-ordering of the life of the community at verses 42-47;
especially note v.44:
All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and
divide them among themselves all according to each one’s need.

Sharing the Living Story
There is an assurance if we choose this very counter-cultural stance: we will be given the same peace that
Jesus offered in John’s post-Resurrection story at 20:19, 21 and 26 to the disciples who were hiding in fear
of the larger society’s animosity because of their stance about the Messiah. This is a peace not of the world
(John 14:27) but a peace that empowers us to stay in solidarity with the Christ while we are still in the
world (John 16:33).
There is another assurance, an assurance that comes from authority in the real sense. John is unmistakable
that it is God who sent Jesus (John 17:8) and that very same authority is given by Jesus to the disciples at
17:18, As you sent me into the world, so I send them into the world. This empowers them ... that the love with which
you loved me may be in them and I in them (John 17:26). This makes larger the sense of the last verses of
today’s pericope: When he had said this, he breathed o n them and said to them , “Receive the Holy Spirit. If
you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” This is about
liberation from sin and the consequences of sin; it is about our being freed by God through the sacrifice of
Jesus, without pre-conditions or even questioning whether we merit God’s mercy.
All three of these pericopes sing about God’s mighty act in giving the Holy Spirit to the disciples of Jesus –
the Spirit who empowers them, as at today’s John 20:22, 23. Lord , send out your Sp irit, and renew the face
of the earth.
So What?
But what of ourselves;
what do we do with these reminders that the Holy Spirit has gifted and has empowered us –
and that in the many communities in which we move, we are able to bind or release ...
with our mouths, our attitudes, our financial positions, our gender, our social class?
How does our heart respond as we sing the Psalm refrain:
Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth?
1
A biblical passage, sometimes of non-consecutive verses (see 1 Corinthians 12 above), sometimes with added
words, e.g. in the same Corinthians pericope above the words, Bro thers and sisters, do not appear in the biblical
text.

Sacraments
We believe that the celebration of the sacraments
ranks among the most important gifts that we have.
We look forward to sharing these celebrations with
those who, in some way, are part of our community.
Therefore, please note the following:
Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local
hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a
minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at 847.382.2148.
Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your
family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance
into our faith community.
 Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing
their 1st child
 Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic
Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint
Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before
scheduling Baptism
 Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at
Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before
scheduling Baptism
Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the
meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at
847.382.5300.
Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation
process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the
wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as
soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a
requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time
of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.
First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are
typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be
registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation
program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and
Education office at 847.620.3067.
Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school.
Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the
two-year preparation program. For more information, call the
PATHS office at 847.620.3072.
Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by
appointment.
Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to
belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs,
perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means
to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and
honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you.
Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding
the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).
Registration: To enter into our faith community, please
attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the
Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st
Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when
there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish
office at 847.382.5300.

SESSION AND REGISTRATION WILL BE ON
SUNDAY, JUNE 5TH *
