WELCOME TO
OLDEN – NORDFJORD CRUISE PORT
- Gateway to the glaciers -
We wish you a warm welcome to the Nordfjord. Olden
– Nordfjord Cruise Port consists of the following ports:
Måløy, Selje, Nordfjordeid, Sandane and Olden.
This folder present information we hope will be useful
when calling in at Olden, or one of our other ports.
Olden is a small pleasant village at the end of the
Nordfjord. A ten minute walk from the quay will bring
you to the centre of Olden where you can enjoy shops,
cafés, the bank and a post-office.
The Nordfjord ends in three branches; Olden is located in
the south. The beautiful Olden Valley stretches approx.
20 km in between 1.700 metres tall mountains at the
edge of Jostedalsbreen Glacier in the middle of
Jostedalsbreen National Park. The glacier arms embrace
the upper part of the valley, and waterfalls and rivers
bring the water to Oldevatn Lake and Floen. About 2 km
from Olden the river forms an impressive waterfall.
The rich moraine soil provides fertile conditions and
agriculture is the main trade of the valley. Other
industries are commerce, production and tourism. Olden
has a population of 1500. It is a part of the municipality
Stryn in the county of Sogn & Fjordane.

Her i frå
Elva
dannar eit praktfullt fossefall 2 km frå tettstaden.
Olden har to kyrkjer.
lenger oppe i bygda.
hovudnæringsvegen i heile dalen. Oppe i liene ligg mange setrar.

Olden and Oldedalen / Olden Valley
The southernmost of the three short branches at the inner end of Nordfjord terminates
at Olden from which a lovely valley, Oldedalen, strikes due south for some 20 kilometres
between slopes rising sharply to more than 1700 metres to the edge of the
Jostedalsbre. The turbulent river which feeds the Olden and Floen Lakes and forms
magnificent falls two kilometres from the village, comes from the glacier tongues of
the Jostdalsbre, lining the head of the valley around the pointed Middagsnibba (1440).
Olden has two churches. The one in the village was built in 1759 on the site of a stave
church dating from around 1300. Its pew doors and jambs are made from timbers of the
stave church. The “new” church, a short distance along the valley, was built in 1934 so
that the old church could be preserved.
Just east of the old church is “Singerheimen”, former home of William Singer, an
American millionaire, artist and local benefactor. Many of his paintings are of the Olden
district and delicately reflect the atmosphere and the seasonal mood.
The fertile soil supports many fine old farms in the lower and upper valleys and high
above the farms are several tiny summer pastures.

Olden besitzt zwei Kirchen.

A VISIT TO THE SINGERHEIMEN
- the home of William Henry Singer jr.
Singerheimen is a unique building of considerable
cultural and historical interest.
William Henry Singer jr.(1868-1943) was an
American artist and multimillionaire who settled in
Olden. In the USA he was heir to one of the biggest
steel companies. He came to Nordfjord in 1912,
and built his summer home here some years later.
Singer gave away big sums of money, enabling the
local authorities to build the local hospital, the
road between Olden and Innvik, and to restore the
old church in Olden and to build a school.

GUIDED HIKE TO FARM SIGDESTAD
- cultural experience in spectacular nature
Sigdestad is a mountain farm located 314
metres above sea level at Hjelle. The path to
Sigdestad is fairly steep, and before 1723 they
had to use a stepladder to reach the farm. All
goods which had to be transported to and from
the farm, had to be carried on one`s back, up
and down the steep path. The houses that are
there today were built in 1908, and people
lived at this road-less farm until 1960. The farm
has a fascinating history, and is today
maintained by “Segestad’s friends”. This
foundation was established in 1983.
