Cardiff Castle was given to the people of Cardiff
by the Bute family after the death of the 4th
Marquess.
At its peak, the Rhondda valley boasted 66 coal
mines. The last pit, Maerdy Colliery, closed in
1990.
About 350,000 people, or 12% of the population of
Wales, speak Welsh as their first language.
In the Vale of Glamorgan,
you will find Llanerch
Vineyard (2.3 miles from
Miskin Manor). This is the
largest and oldest premier
vineyard in Wales.
On the Western outskirts of
Cardiff (6.2 miles from Miskin
Manor) is the Museum of Welsh
Life. This features reconstructed
buildings from all over Wales.
One of Europe’s foremost openair museums, it represents the
life and culture of Wales set in
100 acres of parkland.
On the Northern outskirts of Cardiff
(7.4 miles) is Castell Coch. This is
a late nineteenth-century 'fairytale'style castle, built on medieval
remains. Lavishly decorated and
furnished in the Victorian Gothic
style, it offers a romantic vision of
the Middle Ages.
The city of Cardiff is 10
miles away. As the capital
of Wales, Cardiff has much
to offer, including a
magnificent
castle,
a
redeveloped bay, shopping
centres and the National Museum and gallery.
Rhondda Heritage Park is 9.5 miles
North of Miskin Manor. Based at a
former colliery, it is one of the top
heritage and
cultural
visitor
attractions in South Wales.
Kenfig Burrows, site of a
mediæval town now covered by
sand dunes, and a site of Special
Scientific Interest. The dunes
are home to a wide variety of
rare and endangered species of plants and animals
The Royal Mint at Llantrisant (3.2 miles from
Miskin Manor) does not offer tours and so is not
worth visiting, except perhaps briefly for its gift
shop.
