Nov. 30 starting at 6 p.m. at the Community Centre. Dress for outside and inside as the evening will begin with the Christmas tree lighting, carol singing and greeting Santa as he arrives on a PWVFD fire truck and then everyone is invited into the Community Centre. There will be treats to the kids after they tell Santa their Christmas wishes, refreshments, and more. A highlight of the event is the United Baptist Church’s baked goods ticket auction. DanceTime at Port Williams DanceTime at Port Williams is a social dance club comprised of people interested in both Standard and Latin ballroom dancing. They meet to dance Sunday afternoons from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Port Williams Community Centre, with the regular season starting on Sunday, September 7 and running until May. Anyone interested is welcome to drop by and see what we are all about. The club has been in existence for 11 years, with membership coming from all over with different levels of dance experience. They are a club and not a school, but do occasionally have guest instructors offering workshops, and club members are always willing to share expertise. In addition to their regular practice sessions, they also host several dances throughout the year: a Christmas and Spring Dance, and some other Theme dances in between. The first dance of the year is a Fall Dance on Sept. 27 featuring “Men Will Be Boys”. This event is a fundraiser for the Port Williams Volunteer Fire Department. Launchers Athletics Launchers Athletics is a throws club in the sport of track and field. The field events include the discus, shot put and javelin events. 10 | Kings County Recreation Guide - Fall 2014 Established in 2001, the aim of the club is to give specialized training in throwing events and promote fair play, skill development and have fun throwing. With all young athletes, goals are different with each person. The clubs main goal will be to prepare athletes for several competitive opportunities. (1) The 2017 Canada Summer Games (2) National Junior and Senior Championships (3) Team Canada Opportunities (4) Provincial Legion team and (5) students who would like to get ready for the school track season. The club is open to individuals ages 13 and up. Additional information and photos can be found on their website launchers.ca. Port Williams Park The Port Williams Park is located on Highway 358, across from Centennial Drive. The park was established in 2010 and was a community effort with the goal being a safe and friendly place for kids of all ages to gather and play. In addition to having plenty of parking, the park includes, an amazing play structure for children 2-12 years. There are five awesome slides, climbers and stepping-stones. The equipment is rounded out with swings (for babies as well), some stationary pieces and most recently, a tire-swing that was donated by a local resident. There is a hard-surface court that is used for basketball and ball hockey (a local resident donated hockey nets). As their 40th anniversary project the Port Williams & District Lions Club donated a sun shelter built by local business, Wise Owl Joinery. The walking trail features trees and benches donated by residents. The Park is also home to StoryWalk – an interactive initiative that combines the benefits of physical activity, time outdoors, literacy, art, community and family time. Picnic tables and waste receptacles are in good supply and there is even a portapotty! Visit our donor garden and take a peek at all those who made this park possible. The Port Williams Park – built by the community for all to enjoy. Port Williams Playgroup The Port Williams Playgroup runs during the school year (from September to June) from 10:30 a.m. to 12 every Tuesday morning at the Port Williams United Baptist Church. A raised start ramp helps riders get off to a fast start! The track is an awesome addition to Kentville’s line-up of recreation facilities and has already generated buzz within the mountain bike community. Riders are reminded that helmets are required at all times for this course. Sledding enthusiasts needn’t worry as the track only takes up a portion of the east side of the hill.
