At our 2015 Gala, I told the story of my then
10-year-old son buying his first book — a real
classic — 100 Lawyer Jokes. One of the jokes was:
“Why doesn’t a shark bite a lawyer”? The answer:
“Professional Courtesy.” Now, some might agree
with that answer, but not the nonprofits that receive
pro bono legal services from Pro Bono Partnership
volunteers. They would say: “Pro Bono Courtesy.”
What does that mean? For nearly 20 years, Pro Bono Partnership has
partnered with more than 4,000 in-house counsel and law firm attorneys who
have provided high-quality legal assistance to hundreds of nonprofits in the
tri-state area. By volunteering to assist our clients, their legal work has had a
multiplier effect of positively impacting the communities the clients serve.
In 2015 more than 1,000 passionate and skilled volunteers created and
merged nonprofits, reviewed contracts, handled trademark and other
intellectual property matters, and provided expert advice and guidance.
The types of organizations assisted were as varied as the legal work —
the organizations provided aging and respite care resources; transformative
memoir workshops and performances; as well as education, employment,
and health services.
Pro Bono Partnership provides business and
transactional legal services to nonprofit organizations
serving the disadvantaged or enhancing the quality
of life in neighborhoods in New York, New Jersey
and Connecticut. Substantially leveraging the impact
of its in-house legal staff, the Partnership annually recruits
and mobilizes hundreds of attorneys from major
corporations and law firms to donate their time and
expertise on behalf of its nonprofit clients, enhancing their
ability to improve conditions in their communities.
It is not always easy to decide to volunteer, but it is always rewarding.
We are happy to recognize the many ways in which our volunteers use their
skills to serve our clients and create meaningful change in our communities.
Together, we can inspire a new commitment to pro bono and simultaneously
meet the legal challenges that face the nonprofit sector and provide
“Pro Bono Courtesy” to those around us.
Thank you for your service,
Marcia Levy, Esq.

PRO BONO PARTNERSHIP 2015 VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION AWARDS1
CORPORATE VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
LAW FIRM VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
United Technologies Corporation
Dechert LLP
Pro Bono Partnership recognizes United Technologies Corporation, and its
affiliated companies (collectively, UTC), for the dedication, commitment
and support going back to May 2003, when UTC helped found the Nonprofit
Pro Bono Initiative, the predecessor program to the Pro Bono Partnership
in Hartford.
Dechert LLP has a longstanding tradition of providing pro bono legal
services and the Pro Bono Partnership is pleased to be a key partner in that
tradition dating back to 2003. Dechert’s firm-wide dedication to pro bono
is evidenced by its billable hour credit for associate pro bono work and its
25-hour minimum pro bono requirement among all of its attorneys to ensure
universal participation in its program. Toward that end, over our 13-year
history together more than 300 Dechert volunteers have worked with
Partnership clients on more than 350 matters.
Under the leadership of its then-General Counsel Bill Trachsel, UTC saw an
opportunity to serve nonprofit organizations by connecting them with local
in-house attorneys. Mr. Trachsel tapped a corporate UTC attorney to lead the
charge. UTC worked with other local corporations, law firms, and the Hartford
Foundation for Public Giving to establish a program based at the UCONN
law school.
As the program grew, so did its need for more resources and infrastructure.
UTC led the merger of the program into and with the Pro Bono Partnership
in 2008, to create today’s Hartford-based Pro Bono Partnership office. To
recognize his work on the merger, UTC attorney Peter Gutermann was named
the Partnership’s outstanding volunteer for 2008. He also was elected to
the Partnership’s board in 2008 and was its chair from 2010-2011.
As impressive as this longstanding and continuous support of the Partnership
is, even more impressive is the dedication of UTC’s attorneys to our clients.
Just since 2008, 98 UTC lawyers, including some of its business unit general
counsel, have volunteered on a total of 198 legal projects for more than 125
different clients. We estimate that the attorneys devoted approximately 2,600
hours, with an estimated value of $1,100,000 — a huge dedication of resources to the nonprofit community, with every penny going directly to nonprofit
programming rather than to legal fees. Note — all this effort has occurred
since 2008, when the original Hartford program merged into the Pro Bono
Partnership and UTC’s lawyers were pouring it on for four years before then.
To top it all off, the services are provided by lawyers at every level of UTC’s
legal departments –– current UTC General Counsel Charlie Gill has set an
example for others and himself provided legal services to our non-profit
clients! The culture of service at UTC is strong and starts at the very top.
Thanks in large part to the tireless efforts of Suzanne Turner, partner and
chair of Dechert’s firm-wide Pro Bono practice, 2015 was a standout year
for our partnership in helping Dechert meet its goals while enhancing the
Partnership’s ability to serve the growing needs of our clients. Last year
alone, 100 Dechert volunteers served more than 50 Partnership clients
across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Those volunteers worked
on more than 75 matters sharing their expertise in every practice area
we offer, making them a go-to firm for our nonprofit clients.
Among their 2015 matters were corporate mergers including one finalized
in March 2016 for LifeBridge Community Services, an organization helping
residents of greater Bridgeport, Connecticut improve their lives by offering
a wide variety of programs and services designed to strengthen personal
capability, develop skills, and build a pathway to economic self-sufficiency.
The Dechert volunteers’ expert, thoughtful, and prompt counsel smoothly
guided LifeBridge through their merger, allowing it to pool resources with
another organization and strengthen its ability to meet future challenges
and demands on its services. According to Bill Haas, President & CEO
of LifeBridge, “We were fortunate to have Dechert, LLP as our legal
representation in the merger. The Dechert team always made us feel
like a prime client, their full attention was on our merger process.”
UTC truly has been our partner in every sense of the word, and it is no
exaggeration to say that it has played a critical role in the Pro Bono
Partnership’s success.
These sentiments are often repeated on the part of our clients who have
benefited from Dechert’s shared expertise. Whether Dechert has helped
a client incorporate and apply for tax exempt status, sell or transfer
property, apply for a trademark, draft an employment contract with an
executive director, bring its corporate governance documents up-todate, or provide a range of other assistance, we are grateful for the
counsel Dechert’s dedicated volunteers have shared with our clients.

PRO BONO PARTNERSHIP 2015 VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION AWARDS
CONNECTICUT VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR
Peter Dagostine, Robinson & Cole LLP
Presenter: Maureen McIntyre, Executive Director,
North Central Area Agency on Aging
For many years now, Pete Dagostine has been one of our favorite go-to
employment attorneys for a range of clients and projects. Since Pete
started volunteering with us in 2013, he has been a paragon of commitment,
handling 12 legal projects for nine clients, with no break. In fact, during
this three-year-plus period, he has never been without at least two Pro Bono
Partnership projects on his desk! The clients he has assisted range from a
very small Hartford organization that works with disabled children of color
to a large regional state-funded organization that serves the elderly — and
everything in between. His pro bono projects have included assistance with
training and consultations on labor issues, review of proper classification
of employees, revision of employee handbooks, counsel regarding problem
employees, guidance on possible ADA situations, and more. For each of his
clients, Pete has provided wise and critical counsel, enabling the clients to
feel sure-footed even when dealing with very challenging HR situations. Add
to that Pete’s willingness to jump in quickly when necessary and his calm
unflappability — and you have a volunteer worthy of recognition and thanks!
Susan Masters, Robinson & Cole LLP
Presenter: Yolanda Preysner, Board Member,
Connecticut Odyssey of the Mind
A relative newcomer to the Pro Bono Partnership volunteer network, Susan
Masters certainly hit the ground running. In just two years, Susan has accepted 11 different matters for seven clients! Susan’s projects cover the human
resources waterfront, including reviewing handbooks, providing counsel
regarding classification of employees as exempt versus non-exempt, advising
regarding independent contractors and volunteers, developing employment
applications, and providing assistance with background checks. One of
Susan’s clients enjoyed working with her so much that they approached her
for assistance with corporate governance matters and Susan was up to the
4

challenge, accepting the projects and proving herself a quick study on
corporate documents and procedure. That client says: Susan provided
our organization with clear, understandable, timely advice that greatly
assisted us in making sound decisions. She was responsive, respectful, and
gained our trust during a difficult time for our Board. With her guidance we
were able to restructure our organization and learn how to better fulfill our
fiduciary duties as Board members. Susan receives this award for her many
contributions to our clients, for the quality of her work, for her willingness
to tackle subjects outside her usual practice, and for her sense of humor.
Tiffany Hubbard, McCarter & English, LLP
Presenter: Laura Cordes, Executive Director,
Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence
(formerly CONNSACS - CT Sexual Assault Crisis Services)
Tiffany Hubbard has been volunteering with Pro Bono Partnership
for over six years, and during that period of time has handled an array
of projects ranging from reviewing employee handbooks, to assisting with
administration of employee grievance procedures, to drafting employment
applications and offer letters, to providing counsel on tricky termination
situations. Tiffany often has chosen to work with clients that serve
women who are homeless or who have been victims of sexual assault.
In fact, Tiffany’s most time-consuming and complex projects have
been for the Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence (formerly
CONNSACS), for which she is developing a handbook to advise staff
regarding their confidentiality obligations under statute and their
obligations if subpoenaed. She is also working with the Alliance on
a new booklet to help victims understand their rights related to
the civil statute of limitations for child sex abuse. For these projects
and others, Tiffany brings sensitivity, intelligence, and great instincts,
and we — and all her clients — are grateful!
PRO BONO PARTNERSHIP 2015 VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION AWARDS5
NEW YORK/FAIRFIELD COUNTY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR
Christophe Durrer, Colgate-Palmolive Company
William Malpica, The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS)
Presenter: Eva Tenuto, Executive Director and Co-Founder,
Starling Productions/TMI Project
Presenter: Catalina Samper-Horak, Executive Director,
Neighbors Link Stamford
In the three years Christophe Durrer, Assistant General Counsel – Global
Strategic Innovation and Technology Alliances at Colgate Palmolive Company,
has been volunteering with Pro Bono Partnership, he has quickly become one
of the Partnership’s go-to volunteers. He rarely says no to a request for help and
occasionally spontaneously offers to assist with legal projects. Since becoming a
volunteer, Christophe has assisted ten clients with ten different matters ranging
from reviewing an enrollment contract for a local day care center to assisting
in the dissolution of a nonprofit. One of the many projects Christophe worked
on was creating a template contract for Starling Productions, a nonprofit which
produces TMI Project, an initiative that provides transformative memoir writing
and storytelling workshops and performances that invite storytellers and audience members to explore new perspectives. By sharing bravely and candidly,
storytellers become agents of change, fostering compassion, understanding and
public awareness. Before Christophe’s intervention, TMI Project was negotiating each contract for each workshop and/or performance on a case-by-case
basis. Thanks to Christophe’s thoughtful, pragmatic lawyering, TMI Project
now has a template contract that it can quickly modify for anything from a few
hour workshop to a weekend-long retreat, letting Starling devote its resources to
helping its clients heal themselves.
William Malpica, Director and Senior Counsel, Corporate & Institutional Banking, The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), has been a tremendous
volunteer and supporter of pro bono activities. Wil has helped a number of
our clients with complex and important matters. Wil’s first project with the
Partnership involved the creation of a new nonprofit dedicated to serving
the Stamford immigrant community. Six years ago, Wil helped a group of
Stamford civic and business leaders negotiate a complex licensing and
affiliation arrangement with an existing organization in neighboring Westchester County, New York to establish “Neighbors Link Stamford.” Today,
the organization is thriving, helping hundreds of individuals and families
in Stamford access education, employment, health and other services and
opportunities. The organization has never had a lawyer on staff and since
their founding Wil has acted as their go-to pro bono counsel, advising
the Board and the Executive Director on all legal and strategic matters,
including contracts, employment matters, licensing, insurance, leases,
bylaws amendments, corporate and board governance matters. Where
necessary, Wil involves other lawyers at RBS or at the Partnership to lend
specialized expertise. Beyond Neighbors Link, Wil also has represented
Stamford-based Inspirica, one of the largest organizations in Connecticut serving the homeless, in its efforts to merge its charitable foundation
into the parent organization. In addition to his direct pro bono activities,
Wil has also been a staunch proponent of pro bono work within the RBS
legal department where, as pro bono coordinator, he recruits and guides
RBS colleagues who take on pro bono projects. Most recently, Wil worked
with an RBS colleague to incorporate Impact 100 Fairfield, a local giving
circle. The Partnership is fortunate to count Wil among our volunteers, and
thrilled to honor him this year.
Terrence J. McAllister
Ohlandt, Greeley, Ruggiero & Perle, L.L.P.
Presenter: Sandford (Sandy) Wollman, President and Founder,
Small Business Advisory Alliance
For eight years, Terrence McAllister, a partner and head of the Trademark Practice Group at Ohlandt, Greeley, Ruggiero & Perle, L.L.P., has been an outstanding volunteer with Pro Bono Partnership, bringing his keen intelligence, downto-earth approach, and excellent sense of humor to every project he handles. He
has assisted nearly twenty organizations with matters ranging from trademark
registration to copyright protection to website reviews – and when the Partnership itself needed intellectual property advice, Terry was the person we called.
Terry has a particular gift for distilling complicated concepts into practical
advice that his clients can understand and implement. And he never refuses a
project! To quote one of his clients, Terry’s work has “immeasurable value”
for the organizations he helps and we are delighted to honor him this year.

2015 VOLUNTEER HONOR ROLL
NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR
Susan L. Crane, Wyndham Worldwide Corporation
Presenter: Sandra Miniutti, V.P. of Marketing & CFO of Charity Navigator
Susan Crane has handled trademark and other intellectual property matters
for numerous Pro Bono Partnership clients — in fact, 19 such matters since
2009. Sue often volunteers very quickly to assist with trademarks, and, where
possible, arranges for pro bono trademark searches to save the nonprofits
money. Sue recently volunteered for an unusual project for our client,
Charity Navigator, for which she was uniquely qualified.
Charity Navigator asked for assistance in registering its trademark in
Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Sue volunteered to handle
the matter. She enlisted counsel in each of those countries to provide their
services in registering the mark for free. Sue managed the entire process
for Charity Navigator and succeeded in getting the mark registered or
approved in each country.
Chris A. Johnson, FTI Consulting
Presenter: Jonathan Lucas, Board Chair,
Hudson Pride Connections Center
Chris Johnson is — and has been since 2007 — one of Pro Bono Partnership’s
go-to experts for highly complex nonprofit tax law matters. The matter that he
volunteered to handle for Hudson Pride Connections Center this past year was
right in his wheelhouse. The client, an organization which serves as a home
and voice for the diverse LGBTQ community and allies, needed an experienced
and knowledgeable tax professional to respond to and resolve an inquiry from
the IRS. Chris volunteered to help and provided expert advice and guidance to
achieve a successful result.
