PIT PREVIEWS
Celebrating 87 years of Bringing Boat Racing
to the Pacific Northwest
February 2016
An interview with Hans Moen
Seattle Outboard’s Oldest Member Passes - Part 2
In last month’s Pit Previews, Hans
Moen discussed his early life and
how he started outboard racing.
This month, he recounts racing
memories.
you don’t…” What for? Just wearing
out an engine.
Do you remember about what
year you stopped?
Yeah, oh yeah, I know all of those
guys. In fact I sold one of the boys
my Jones hydro.
Ooh, uh, 20 years since I quit.
OK.
At least that many. I’ve never kept
track of it, but, anyway. And even
after I quit racing I had parts, you
know, and it was five years, I’d be
furnishing parts for all these racers,
because I had an excessive bunch
of parts. I’d build and re-build my
own and with a racing engine we had
to pad the cylinder heads, we had
to have different rods. The engines
were made to, you know, a 7,000 rpm
engine you’d run ‘em up to 11 (11,000
rpm – Ed.). And a lot of times, you
know, if you didn’t watch you could
blow one.
Yeah. Did you race with the
Stateline group in Spokane?
OK.
You know, I never flipped it or had
any accidents with it. But after he’d
run it for a year or so I understand
he flipped it one time. To me, that
particular boat, I could do almost
anything with it. And I won a lot of
trophies with it, too. It was at the
stage where I wanted to get into another class. I wanted to get into the
C Service class, the old man’s class.
Yeah. (Laughter.) Now the Jones
boat, what class was that? What
class did you race it in?
C class.
C Stock?
Oh, sure, yeah.
No, it was the outboard.
For instance, if a flywheel key broke
there was no balance, the engine
would run away, you couldn’t stop
it. And it plain burned it up. But we
watched that pretty closely, we didn’t,
you know, my son and I, we’d maybe
take one lap on a test run and that’s all
we’d do. Everybody said, “How come
C Outboard. OK.
A stock engine wasn’t as rough on a
boat as an alky burning engine. They
put in more stringers, they strengthened the beams on the side. Anyway,
I know my son’s boat was built standard. And, you know, we didn’t put
any extra stuff into it. Even so, in his
class, it was a lighter boat. He won
quite a few trophies, too.
Of all the classes you raced in,
did you have a favorite?
Well, my favorite class, I probably
ran more in the D Stock class. That
was a 40 horse Merc, stock. And of
course those were, you know, you
tried to put one up a little bit. One
of the guys that worked for Pacific
Marine, uh, I forget his name now, he
was running a D Stock all of the time. And I ran along side of him.
You knew John Laird back then?
Oh, yeah, John was a runabout guy
all the time. I talk with John once in
a while on the phone.
How about Bob Feil. Bob Feil
is still alive. Did you know him
pretty well?
Oh, yeah. During all my marine business,
I’d buy from Feil Boats and Motors. I’d buy
all my parts from them. Even to this day
I’m one of their buyers. People come to me,
“Can you get this, can you get that?” And
I’d say, “Yeah, I can get that.” And then,
well, how much discount? And I’d say,
“Any discount I get on it isn’t going to affect
it. If you want it, fine, if you don’t, forget
it.” That’s the way it goes. Depending how
much you buy. Well, lately I haven’t bought
any parts ‘cause I’ve been trying to quit
entirely.
Now, you knew Bill Rankin, too.
Oh, yeah. I knew Bill well. Bill and I
had a few words once-in-while ‘cause

possibilities. Looking at the possibility
of adding 1-2 more races.
J Boat Build Update:
Matt Yarno & David Williams reported
We’re building 5 boats at the Museum
annex. Over the last 7 years we have
built 43 boats. It was brought up that
we really need to put together an
informational pamphlet (or flyer) that
we can share with interested individuals…SOA BOD will look into.
New Business:
45ss class: Need to have 2 rescue
boats on the water, so important that
we (SOA/Race
Directors) know which races the 45’s
will be attending. All restrained boats
now need
radios, which includes a spotter
located in a corral. SOA has also
purchases a countdown
clock (10” numbers) that will be near
the corral…also visible to the pit
area...that will help
spotters with the countdown. This is
a reference only clock…not used for
protests. Brent Hall, new 45 class
rep, is excited to get going.
Class Reps:
Jim Nilsen Hopes to have class reps
finalized in the next week or so &
published in Pit Previews
2018 Nationals:
SOA was awarded the 2018 SO/J Nationals at Moses Lake, 7/30-8/5. It’s
still in the planning stages with hope
of including the MOD category.

Hans Moen

he was one of the top men in the, uh,
wholesale business on the coast. And
if somebody in the area had something
that they didn’t think I wasn’t doing
right, didn’t treat ‘em right, they’d call
Bill. Bill would call me, “What the hell
is this guy arguing about?” “I don’t
know, what are you talking about?” Well so and so. One particular case, a
kid was from out of Omak, and he had,
I think it was a 50 horse, and he blew
a piston. Well, that meant getting a
new block. Got him a short block, put
it all together. Then he complained
to Rankin about I wasn’t treating him
right. “What do you mean?” “ Well, he
said I should’ve put a heat indicator on
it.” And I said, “None of us ever put
any heat indicator on our rigs. How
come he..?” “Well, he insisted that you
should’ve done it.” I asked Bill, I said,
“What do you suggest?” He said, “Tell
him to go to hell.” (Laughter.) So I
said, “That’s what I did.” I never heard
from the guy then. So, anyway, we had
our ups and downs.
Yeah.
So I built a home in Bridgeport, next
to the school. And, some people decided to, well, in the mean time I was
lookin’ at this property here. And a
guy come along and he says, “Is your
place in Bridgeport for sale?” And I
said, “Well, it isn’t but do you want
it?” He says, “Yeah, we gotta have
it.” So I sold it before I built this. I
lived in a trailer out here while I was
building this.
OK, yeah.
Anyway. Yeah, you know, even after
so many years of racing, the wife kept
prodding me, you know, “Why don’t
you give it up, why don’t you give it
up?” Well, I finally decided I’d had
enough.
Yeah.
While I was in town, I’d take a pick-up. I’d leave in the morning, take a parts
list with me, bring back a boat and
a motor, whatever, load up the boat
and come back home again. All in one
day’s time. It was quite a trip.
Yeah. Well, when you were racing did you have a favorite place
that you liked to race best?
any more or not.
Right behind the dam. I sponsored racing
behind the dam for 10 solid years.
Yeah, I don’t think…
Yeah, yeah.
But it got too expensive. The Corps of
Engineers wanted this much, and somebody else wanted insurance, it got to the
point where I couldn’t afford it.
Yeah.
They’ve got a club associated with a
bunch in Idaho they race with. Other
than that, when they used to race,
why, a couple of the guys with Stateline, I built engines for them. And
weekends, they blow it up one weekend, the next weekend you fix it up
and go again.
Well, then it traded off. It was one
day here and one day at Pateros. Well, I might have turned it over to
Pateros completely. But now, Seattle
Outboard has, oh, they’ve been out
here a couple of years in a row. And
they find out, too, that the Corps of
Engineers was too high priced so they
lumped it.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They want to come back again but
they can’t talk with the Engineers,
don’t get the right guy. We had a guy
on the Corps of Engineers that was a
boat racing fan. As long as he was in
there we got along real good. But after he got transferred to Seattle, why,
a young guy come in and it wasn’t as
easy to get racing here.
His dad come over to Moses Lake
and that’s where he passed away.
Yeah.
Anyway. We have a big launching
ramp out behind the dam, beautiful.
Yeah, I raced there a couple times.
Anyway, it got to the point, my son
and I, we hardly ever had any problems. Probably the last 10 years we
raced together our engines stayed
together. We made sure that any
rattles or something, you need the
right kind of mixture. Ric Montoya, I
used to race with him and his dad. Yeah.
The old man. But Ric’s still in business.
Yeah, he’s still doing a lot.
But he’s the one that took over all I
had . I had two boats, three engines,
all kinds of parts, he bought the
whole outfit.
OK.
It was the, oh, a Ford dealer in Spokane that sponsored a couple of boat
guys for a while. What the…Johnson,
Johnson Ford.
It stood here for one whole winter. The canvass started to leak here and
there. So, he made me an offer and
I said no. He finally come down and
he says you still not gonna take any
less? It’s not a panic, if you want it,
fine. Otherwise it can stay there and
rot. But he finally come for it. He
couldn’t pay me all at one time, but,
you know, his dad was, we got along
real good. He raced runabout, the
old man was a runabout guy. And
Ric raced runabout for a while and I
know now he’s got a couple of hydros
for sale.
Huh, OK.
Yeah, he ran both, hydro and
runabout.
Oh, you did?
Yeah, yeah. The last year we were
there I remember you came down
to watch for a while.
Yeah. There’s nobody racing in Montana any more.
Not really, not that I know of.
It’s kind of died out there.
Johnson, yeah. And they came to race
Yeah.
here to race behind the dam a few times. I raced against him a couple times.
I don’t know whether they gave it up or
what. Anyway, and the Stateline, I don’t

the guy that I ran with. Or he was, a
couple of years ago, anyway. But he
got Alzheimer’s. They were competitive.
Art Losvar?
Oh, yeah, always.
Well, I raced with him, too. In fact,
he raced the last year, for sure.
Always good to get along with. And,
one other guy, in the runabout class. Andy, Andy Anderson (Howard Anderson, Jr. – ed.). Andy was a Mercury dealer too, you know And he had
some real hot boats. But, eyesight
went bad on him. I’ve gone to a few
of the races just to watch, you know. Moses Lake had races, I’d go there
and watch. Moses Lake has changed,
so the next race comes up at Soap
Lake. I’m gonna go to it.
OK.
Yeah. Everybody says, what do you
race at Soap Lake? It’s back behind
the hill. Have you ever been there?
Not for a race, but I have been
to Soap Lake.
The race is in a different portion of
the lake. It’s a good place to race.
A couple years ago. Yåeah. His
health isn’t too good now.
Yeah.
He’s having some health problems.
Oh, yeah. But I raced with him. You
know, you’re getting into all the
lighter classes. They’re still running D Mod, which is a stepped up
D Stock. And, then it’s got…Howard
Shaw used to run a class…
1100 runabout.
Yeah. First he had a complete outfit
for sale. Now it’s down to, he’s got a
350 Hydro, complete outfit, for sale.
Everything. $2,500 bucks.
Yeah.
Yeah. They used to race there
years ago, too.
And, uh, seems like Ric Montoya has
something for sale all the time.
Oh, yeah, yeah. Then, you know,
they raced at Coulee Dam. What did
they call it, oh, Electric City.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I raced there for a couple of years.
OK, yeah. Did you ever race on
Green Lake, in Seattle?
Oh, yeah. I raced all of those places. Trying to think of this one guy’s
name. Runabout guy. He and his
dad. Tall lanky guy. Anyway, he
raced hydro and runabout, and his
dad was his pit crew all the time. Andy, well he was always in a class
higher than I could get into. They
were all hot boats, you know. And
he had Rankin do all his mechanical
work for him.
Did Rankin do mechanical work
for you?
No, no, I did all my own mechanical
work. If I needed any mechanical
work, it was after I started running
the C Service. And then, I can’t
remember his name, he’s still alive,
Different things. And, you know, we’ve
started to get a few Canadians to come
down to race. In fact I’ve noticed one or
two from B.C. come down to race. I think
they’re running C Stock.
Yeah.
And of course, Oregon, a lot of ‘em
come up from Tillamook, and down in
there. There’s a boat racing club down
there.
CORA.
Anyway, it’s just the last couple of races
the Canadians have come down. Or
they come clear from California.
That too, yeah.
There’s a few of ‘em coming in from
B.C. We used to race, you know, up at,
oh, big lake up, it’s close to the border.
Harrison Hot Springs?
No, it’s another one.
Lake Osoyoos?
5
Yeah, yeah. We raced there quite a
few times. But, like I say, out here
behind the dam, I sponsored that for
10 years. And you know, when you
put out a couple thousand bucks for
insurance, and then they want more,
why, no, that’s enough. Anyway. Two
years ago they had a race out here. It was all lighter classes. Nothing
heavy. And you know, we used to
get a crowd out once in a while when
they had those fast runabouts running. Bob Waite, he used to run a
runabout, had a heavy gal as a partner.
How in the hell he kept that boat
afloat? But he made some good racing.
He was quite a driver.
Yes, he was. Yeah. I’m trying to think,
the gal that used to ride with him…
Millie Laird, wasn’t it?
Millie Laird, yeah. They made a good team.
Yeah.
And, uh, Howard Anderson, seems like,
I don’t remember any time he’d start
without having a problem. Something
would go wrong, seems like, before he
could finally get it started.
Yeah.
Always problematic. But go? God,
did he ever go!
Once he got it running, it went.
Oh, yeah. And then he had two boys
that raced, too. While the races
were being held here at Pateros, you
know, that was a good place. The
same thing happened there. The first
aid crew, you know, they wanted so
much money. Well, the club didn’t
have any extra money. But the small
inboards still race, you know, at
Pateros.
Next month, in the final part of
the interview, Hans Moen continues discussing his memories
of outboard racing, and tells
what he has been doing in the
last few years. Be sure to read
Pit Previews next month.

******* MISSING A PROPELLER? *******
At lake Lawrence, we ended up with a prop that
is not ours. It is a Dewalt “R” prop and we would
like to get it back to its owner. It’s possible that it
somehow got switched with another. We really want
everyone’s props back in the right trailer. If you
think it might be yours, please contact us (with the
complete number or description) at the number(s)
below. Thanks! Anderson Racing Moses Lake, Spokane ************** WANTED **************
