PIT PREVIEWS
Celebrating 87 years of Bringing Boat Racing
to the Pacific Northwest
April 2016
An interview with Hans Moen
Seattle Outboard’s Oldest Member Passes - Part 3
In the previous two issues of Pit
Previews, Hans Moen has discussed his early life and his years
of racing. In this, the final installment of the interview, he recaps a
few more memories of his outboard
racing years and discusses what he
has been doing recently.
Have you been to the inboard
races at Pateros?
I was gonna go down there but I had
company so I couldn’t go. And there’s
gonna be a race on Chelan, the 21st
and 22nd. The old, rebuilt hydros.
The old vintage boats.
Yeah, yeah. I’m gonna go to
that. But like I say, they put me on
a medication that drug me down
for 10 days, you might say. Just
now kinda gettin’ built up again. I
thought they had the bladder problem solved, you know, but I don’t
think it’s solved yet. See what happens. When you have to get up five
or six times a night, you don’t get
any sleep. So, anyway. I’ve been
here now 10…The wife passed
away in ’93. I go to the senior’s
lunches about three times a week,
in Brewster. Do my own cookin’. I’ve learned a lot of cooking. Right
now we’re in the act of rebuilding
my deck.
Oh, OK.
It’s been there for 20 years, and the
underpinning was beginning to get
wiggly. The deck was all redwood.
Oh.
So we used half of the redwood and
put in new 2x4’s. We got the deck all
together, and we got to put new railing up. My son’s helping me with that.
He lives in Spokane but he comes
over. He and his wife both came last
time last trip, and spent three days
here. Got all the deck wood up. I
had a canopy over the front door. Well, gotta replace it. Little by little.
OK, well, one last question.You’re
100 years old now aren’t you?
I’ll be 101 in November.
OK. That’s great.
It’s comin’ up. Well, you know, my
boat racing never had anything
other than maybe a skinned knuckle
or something. Not that serious,
any of our flipping. Got wet, sure.
First couple years we raced why,
the wife says I’m gonna bring along
plenty of dry clothes. But after two
or three years and stuff, we learned,
you know, experience. We had,
my son had a trailer of his own
for a while, but he was draggin’
it around with a small car. It
didn’t work out, so he sold the
trailer. I built my trailer to haul
two boats, and we hauled all
the engines in my trailer. Just
one rig. And then when he
decided he didn’t want to do
it anymore, I think I went to a
couple of races after he quit. And the wife was gettin’ a little
bit tired of it, so I said, “OK,
we’ll quit.” Lots of good times,
some a little bit… One year,
we went to Wyoming to races. That particular year I put 10,000
miles on a pick-up, camper, just
hauling boats to races. 10,000
miles in one year.
That’s a lot of driving.
But I had a good year, but the
races in Wyoming didn’t turn
out too good. The official didn’t
show up and didn’t show up,
and finally we had to make up
a crew of our own. I remember,
I’m not sure if Rockey was still
racing at that time. Oh, he was
still racing. I’ve still got one of
those cast iron engines out in
the yard. I didn’t know at the
time, a lady down here had an
auction sale. A friend of mine
says…the engine’s got a name
on it. I said “I’ll go look at it.” Well, I know the auctioneer real

We got a lot of waste stuff on there,
I’ll have wood for all winter long. Won’t have to worry about burning
my stove in the shop. You know, everybody says, “Are you gonna burn
all the redwoods?” I said, “Well it’s
pretty well rotted out.” I said, “What
we’ve put in down here, we’ve cut
all the ends off and just used the
good pieces.” As you can see. Those stripes out there? The black
ones are all the redwood And we
flipped it. We put in all new beams.
When I first built it I had it on fourfoot centers. Well, it was a little bit
springy. So now we went in made
it on two-foot centers. More sturdy. It’ll last my lifetime, I guess.
Hans Moen

well. And he says, “Are you lookin’
for that engine?” I said not very
hard, but I kind of have it for a souvenir. So, some Mexicans bid $15,
$17, and I bid $20. The Mexicans
bid $22. And I said, “$25.” The
auctioneer said, “Sold,” before to
number so and so, before anybody
could say a damn word. So along
with it I got two Johnsons in the
same sale. There was a pallet laying there with these two engines on
it. So I bought all three. And, that
particular cast iron engine, a friend
of mine wants it. He left me a $30
down payment if I ever want to sell
it. It’s the original, what we started
with. Of course, we stripped ‘em
all down so they were lighter. Only
thing we saved was the gas tank. The lower unit was different. Anything that we didn’t need on ‘em.
you know, doctor’s call. I go to Omak
to Wal-Mart and do my shopping.” When we were building the deck here
my son has got one of those power
nailers. Well, it was running out of nails.
I went to the hardware store in Brewster.
Naw, we gotta think about that. And
I had to go to Home Depot in Omak. 2up there. But were’re gonna put up
new rail on the top. Then we’re
gonna run one beam right through
the middle. So it’ll take some more
nails yet. We’ll have enough.
Yeah, yeah.
APBA Capsule Training 2016
But I still have a few lawn mowers to
work on, a few weed eaters. Lately
I’ve turned ‘em down. I’m just plain
too tired any more. Can’t do it. By
the time I get my lawn mowed and
sprinklers set in, I’ve got a day in.
Yeah.
One thing I did, a year ago, I had
to go to Omak to get my driver’s
license. Well, a lot of rigamaroll,
the same guy that has given me my
driver’s license the last five times,
was still there. He was still passing, writing out the licenses. Well,
he was on the grumpy side. There
were probably 10 Mexicans waiting to get a driver’s license. So he
looked down and questioned me
and questioned me. “Look,” I said,
“What’s all this about?” “Well, I’m
supposed to do this and supposed
to do that.” I said, “OK, you know
me.” “Yeah. Give me the money.” Paid him off and he says, “Hold on,
this is for five more years.” I said,
“I’ve got to have my driver’s license. My longest trip was to Wenatchee,
Yeah.
But we got the deck on, that was
the main thing. I was gonna paint
it but, “No, we’re gonna come over
and stain it.” OK, OK. “Why do you
want paint?” Anyway, he says, “I’ll
come over and I’ll paint it. It’ll be a
redwood stain.” “OK, OK, it’s your
baby.” Anyway, we’ll see what happens.
Yeah.
I’m sure it will, yeah.
You might say I’ve had a pretty decent life. Right now, you never know

with these darn bladder problems. And I hope it’s on the mend.
Yeah, that’s kinda rare.
Yeah, it’s rare. But she’s a good doctor.
Yeah.
Well, I think we’ve covered a lot.
Yeah, sometimes it takes a while.
I think we’ve done pretty well.
Yeah, the doctor says, “Give it time,
give it time.” I’m gonna talk to her
tomorrow. She and I had a pretty
good…she’s been my doctor for
two years now. They wanted to
switch me to a doctor up here in
Brewster, and I said, “No, hell no,
I’m gonna stay with my same doctor. I ain’t gonna change.” So, in
fact, she’s been here at my house
often. They were camped in a
campground in Bridgeport. They
were a little chilly, so they came out
here and borrowed wood that they
were burning in their burning pit.
So, got pretty well acquainted. A doctor coming out of a big hospital and
coming to your home.
Yeah.
Probably a lot of stuff there that, you
know, we could dig down and find
out. We’ve had some problems and
other things.
Yeah. Thank you.

Floyd Givens
Equipment Fund
SOA’s equipment fund is named in memory of Floyd
Givens, who maintained our radios and worked for the
club up to his passing.
New for August, Thanks to Ed Raymond for stepping up
with a $200 donation to the Equipment Fund.
Ashley and Colin Rucker began the fund with money donated
from their savings accounts and members are encouraged to
follow Ashley and Colin’s lead by contacting Sheryl Rucker
with donations in Floyd’s memory.
