ust a few months into 2015, and our mission to Honor Marines by
Educating Their Children™ is off to a roaring start. After closing 2014 with
record levels of support — including more than 2,200 scholarships awarded,
valued at over $6,600,000 — we’ve set our sights even higher
this year.
We have to. After all, setting ambitious goals isn’t about the money we raise,
it’s about the lives we impact. It’s about keeping our promise to leave no
Marine family behind.
Margaret B. Davis
President and CEO
And the level of support needed to meet the demand from our Marine
families is growing every year. With more than 100,000 Marine children
reaching college age in the next decade, the Scholarship Foundation needs
your help to reach new horizons in 2015 and beyond. I want to share the
following good news with you:
• The PwC Charitable Foundation Inc. makes historic gift. The Scholarship Foundation is one of the first
ever military service organizations specially chosen for a $1.25 million dollar multi-year investment from the
groundbreaking foundation (page 4).
• Marine families in the news. On the heels of our own study on the impact to children of their seriously
wounded parent comes national pieces on Marine Corps children from NPR, the Washington Post, and
the New York Times. Supporting our military children is a national responsibility, and we’re proud to be a
leader in the conversation and a lead supporter of the unsung heroes — the children.
• Scholarships for every skill. Leaving no Marine family behind means providing resources for every calling.
More and more students are pursuing Career and Technical Education (CTE) to launch careers immediately
and in lieu of four-year degrees. The Foundation is proud to help strengthen America through this avenue
as well and always offers scholarship support for these post-high school dreams at accredited schools!
• Celebrate the Month of the Military Child. Join us in April to focus on the distinct needs and gifts of
our military kids. Raised on honor, courage, and commitment, Marine children shine in their service and
sacrifice. Invest in America’s most promising and deserving students — our future is theirs!
As you browse this year’s first edition of On Point, you’ll see we’ve got lots on the horizon and positive “hills
to climb” to fulfill our mission of Honoring Marines by Educating Their Children. Help us seize the objective!
In the Spirit of Semper Fidelis,
Margaret B. Davis

Student Spotlight
Lexi Quance
During my junior year of high school, only a month after my 17th birthday,
I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. This took me physically out of
school and placed me in the hospital for almost two years, where I underwent
four rounds of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and a 40-plus
day stay in the ICU on life support. This diagnosis has gravely impacted my
family and has definitely made furthering my education more difficult than
expected. Since I was born, my parents had planned well financially, but
my medical bills completely wiped out all of the funds they had set aside
so I could go to college. My father is veteran Staff Sergeant Jared Quance.
Throughout my father’s service and especially throughout my treatment, the
Marine Corps has shown me that we will always have our Marine family
looking out for us and supporting us, no matter the circumstances.
I’ve known that I wanted to pursue a career as a physician assistant since
my freshman year of high school, and going through treatment has made
me realize that I want to specialize in pediatric oncology to help others that
are going through the same thing as I did. Being a recipient of the Marine
Corps Scholarship Foundation put me on a path toward achieving those goals,
which was not an option before.
One month after her 17th birthday,
Lexi was diagnosed with acute myeloid
Leukemia — a rare form of cancer. Rounds
of treatment, chemotherapy, and a bone
transplant ultimately cured Lexi’s illness,
but they also left her college fund empty.
Her parents — veteran Marine Jared
Quance and his wife, Tracey — remained
committed to the goal of education, and
with the Scholarship Foundation’s support,
Lexi started her freshman year this fall at
Christopher Newport University with the
goal of becoming a physician assistant.
Last fall, I started as a freshman at Christopher Newport University, where I am majoring in biology with a
minor in leadership studies. This scholarship holds a multitude of opportunities for me. College is an opportunity to
get away from the “cancer girl” image that some people in my area view me as; it is an opportunity to expand
my knowledge in my preferred field of study, and it is an opportunity to grow as an individual and explore even
further who I am as a person.
I would sincerely like to thank you again from the bottom of my heart for your generosity and for your
thoughtfulness.
Sincerely,
Alexis Quance
Daughter of veteran Staff Sergeant Jared Quance, USMC

The PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc. Donates $1.25M
I
n January, the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc. announced a $1.25 million donation to the Marine Corps
Scholarship Foundation.
The donation is a part of a $5 million
commitment to a series of grants
to support U.S. veterans and their
families over the next five years — to
provide scholarships for education
as well as support the veterans’
transitions back to the workforce.
During a luncheon on January 12,
leaders from both Foundations
expressed a shared vision for America’s
future made possible by strengthening
our military families.
“We all must prevent our nation’s
heroes from sacrificing their children’s
education given rising costs,” said
Scholarship Foundation president
A $1.25 million donation from the PwC Foundation is an investment in America’s future.
and CEO, Margaret B. Davis. “The
foresight and generosity of this gift
makes the post-high school dreams
of countless Marine families a reality. The PwC Charitable Foundation is investing in children raised on honor,
courage, and commitment. The Charitable Foundation is committed to seeing our recipients graduate and thus
are working with us to help strengthen America’s future.”
“Our Charitable Foundation is focused on making investments that can have a profound
effect on underserved populations, including those who have sacrificed for our country —
veterans and their families,” said Shannon Schuyler, principal, corporate responsibility leader,
PwC and president, PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc.
“By helping support these students, we are providing an investment in America’s future and
our next generation of leaders,” said Frank Gaudio, U.S. deputy tax leader, PwC; trustee and
veterans’ liaison for the PwC Charitable Foundation.
PwC US also has a deep commitment to veterans. It has an active Veterans Network that collaborates with the
Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership and has presented best practices on veterans
programs to Joining Forces at the White House. These programs, and more, have contributed to PwC US being
named as a Top 100 Military Friendly Employer® for the fifth year in a row, as well as the Seven Seals Award and
the Above and Beyond Award from the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve.

Scholarships for Every Skill
D
id you know the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation provides need-based scholarships to the children
of Marines enrolled in accredited career and technical education programs (CTE)?
The skill gap is widening in our country, and that serves as a detriment to future generations. Too few students
are pursuing education in career training and as a result, there are 3,000,000 vacant jobs nationwide without
enough skilled workers to accept them. Like you, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation believes that
career technical education is critical for our society. We believe every dream has a journey and every career
has a path. Together, we can help children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen forge their career paths with
scholarship support and lessen their worries about affording an education.
The Scholarship Foundation is committed to supporting Marine children in pursuit of their educational
goals, and these days there’s no more versatile educational path than CTE. What many used to think of
purely as vocational training has evolved into a dynamic career field with options as varied as the students
who enroll in them. From health sciences to finance and information technology to manufacturing, CTE
professionals are on the cutting edge of today’s most hands-on careers and making an immediate impact on
our nation’s work force.

On January 18, twenty-five runners went the distance
for the children of Marines in the Chevron Houston
Marathon. This year’s team raised more than $11,000
through Houston’s Charity program, called Run for a
Reason, which brought in more than $2 million worth
of combined charitable donations.

Foundation Investors Hear It First
Addressing a small group of business executives, General John F. Kelly, USMC,
Commander, Southern Command, discussed cyber and global security issues
and challenges at a Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation luncheon on
January 12. The group was astonished to learn that at least six million daily
attempts are made to hack the Pentagon! His remarks proved timely, as
later that day, news broke of successful hacking of U.S. Central Command’s
(CENTCOM) social media accounts. The Scholarship Foundation plans to
provide additional high-level conversation opportunities on cybersecurity with
senior Marine Corps leaderships throughout the year to our investors.

American Patriots Campaign Progress
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is committed to leaving no child behind —
awarding a scholarship to every eligible child of a Marine or Navy Corpsmen who
would like to pursue post-high school educational opportunities. Through our American
Patriots Campaign, we are leading the charge to raise $160 million by 2018. We are
pleased to share that, with the generous support of 2014 contributions — totaling nearly
$21,000,000 — we have raised $121 million to date.
