Coffee Talk
No matter how old your children are
or how much time they spend on the
Internet, you want to make sure that
they’re always safe online. Here are some
answers to common questions about
parenting in the digital age:
Keeping your child SAFE
ON THE ‘NET
•
Teach your child to never say
something online that they
wouldn’t feel comfortable saying to
someone’s face (or in front of their
grandmother).
•
Talk to them about never forwarding
humiliating messages, texts or photos.
What tools are available to keep my
child safe online?
Vin Room West
3102, 8561 - 8A Ave SW
The following are examples of parental
controls you can enable using any number
of apps, programs, or device settings:
•
Filtering and blocking − limits access
to specific websites, words, or images.
•
Blocking outgoing content
− prevents children from transmitting information
online.
•
Limiting time − allows limits
to be set for how long children
are online, and when.
•
Monitoring tools − track online
activity without blocking access.
How can I protect my child from
cyberbullying?
587-353-8812
•
Make sure that they know there are
things they can do, and resources
available, if they become involved
in cyberbullying, and that they can
always talk to you.
Cyberbullying is a growing problem that
requires all of us — including our children
– to work together to help put an end to
it. Start with these steps:
One of the most important things you
can do for your children is to be a guide
to their online world. GetCyberSafe.ca
is a good place to start to learn how.
•
Encourage empathy. Help your child
put themselves in someone else’s
position, and imagine how they
would feel.

First signs of spring
The playful song of the Red-Winged Blackbird
gives us hope for lush, green grass and a warm
breeze when it feels like we can’t take anymore
of the cold winter months.
Known as a pre-cursor to spring, the RedWinged Blackbird is one of the more largely
abundant species of bird across North America.
Males are easily identified by the red and
yellow shoulder patches (known as epaulettes),
silhouetted on their glossy black bodies. Females
however, are a dark brown and are often
embellished with a white eyebrow.
Typically found in a variety of different
environments, the Red-Winged Blackbirds spend
their breeding season in wetlands and marshes.
The cold winter months will see them move to
drier farm fields, pastures and large grasslands.
These areas boast large amounts of insects, fruit
and seeds in the warm months, and ragweed
and cocklebur in the cold months to keep these
birds well-fed. Because these items are typically
found on the ground, the Red-Winged Blackbird
is considered a ground forager.
When the females aren’t looking for food, they can be found
weaving nests amongst cattails, bulrushes or other grass-like
vegetation near to, or on the ground. These nests will be
home to two or three broods of hatchlings per year. Females
typically mate with the territorial male; the Red-Winged
Blackbird is a polygynous species, allowing males to mate with
more than one female every breeding season. One male can
have up to 15 different female mates in one area.
Once hatched, young will remain in the nest for 9 to 12 days;
staying out of sight of various predatory species, including
raccoons, mink, marsh wrens, hawks and owls. The placement
of the nest over water assists in the prevention of losing young
to these fearsome foes.
If you come across an injured or orphaned Red-Winged
Blackbird, please
contact the
Calgary
Wildlife
Rehabilitation
Society via their
wildlife hotline at

Red-Winged Blackbird
Pg. 8 May 2015 on the lookout
this spring
From minor irritations to severe allergic reactions, don’t let
bees and wasps be a buzz-kill this year. Bee- and wasp-proofing
should start as soon as temperatures begin to rise, as colonies
begin anew each spring.
Wasps and bees like to nest in protected areas such as dense
bushes, tree branches, fence lines, wall voids or under the
eaves of a structure. These steps to protect your property are
suggested by Orkin:
• Regularly inspect the perimeter of your home for nests. If
you suspect the presence of bees or wasps, reach out to your
local pest management professional to evaluate and remove the
nest. Bees and other pollinators may be protected by local or
national laws, so contact your pest management professional
for advice on how to handle your specific situation.
• Caulk any cracks or crevices around the exterior of your
building.
• Avoid attractants such as brightly coloured and fragrant
flowers. Choosing outdoor décor with dark or neutral colours
can discourage flying pests.
• Cover any food sources left outdoors, such as picnic spreads,
pet food, garbage containers and compost piles.
It is important that you do not try to eliminate nests on your
own. Wasp and bee stings are typically a minor nuisance, but
in some cases, severe allergies or side effects can occur. By
partnering with a pest management professional and taking
proactive steps now, you can help reduce the sting of flying
pests all year.

Extended
Front
Driveways
Spring is here,
which means you might be
thinking about starting home renovation projects like building a
garage, deck or even extending your existing driveway.
Extended front driveways impact pedestrian safety and prevent
street parking, leaving visitors to your community without
a place to park. In addition, they prevent front of home
landscaping opportunities.
Landscaping is an integral function of a community because it
supports proper water drainage, helps replenish ground water
which supports the maintenance of trees, and helps prevent
increased temperatures in cities. In addition, landscaping allows
The City and its partners easier access to utility right of ways.
Extending your driveway requires a permit and installing a hard
surface along the entire front of your property is prohibited by
City policies and bylaws in many cases.

Do you suffer from sneezing
fits and headaches during
different times of the year?
If so, there are some things that a furnace and duct
cleaning company can do to help.
Duct cleaning could really help you eliminate your seasonal
allergies. Studies show that one of the most common causes of
allergies and asthma is related to indoor air quality. In fact, one
of the most strongly allergenic materials found in the air you
breathe when you’re inside, is common house dust.
You may not realize it, but house dust can be heavily
contaminated with dust mite fecal pellets and cast skins. About
40,000 dust mites can thrive in just one ounce of dust. That
means even the cleanest house probably has plenty of these
allergy-causing microscopic critters. Yuck. Plus, it’s estimated
that dust mites are known to factor into 50 to 80 percent of
asthmatics, as well as countless cases of eczema, hay fever, and
other allergy-related ailments.
Most people have spring cleaning rituals. You might clean
carpets and closets, turn the mattresses, air out upholstery, etc.
Seasonal cleaning of your home’s ventilation system should be
on the list, as well. We recommend that, as part of your spring
cleaning, you see whether it is time to have us come out to
Pg. 11 May 2015 l
make sure that your air conditioner, furnace, and vents are in top
condition. Why wait until the fall or heating season?
Look around your vents. Is there a build-up of dust or dirt there?
When you turn on your ventilation system, is there a burned,
dusty or moldy scent? Are you noticing that the volume of air
coming out is less than you are used to? These are all signs of
dirty or even clogged vents and ducts. Regular furnace and duct
cleaning should be done at least once a year. If you haven’t been
doing this, there’s a good chance you’re in need of some deep
cleaning.
On top of this, you will notice that your energy bill may be
higher. Dirty air ducts can significantly reduce the efficiency
of your air conditioner, meaning that not only will you be less
comfortable than you should be, but your equipment will be
required to expend more energy when it runs.
Clean air ducts are an essential ingredient to a healthy, effective
air conditioning system. Dust and mold that builds up inside
your home’s ducts can be harmful to your family’s health. If
these contaminants escape into the air, they can contribute
to indoor pollution. People with asthma or allergies, the very
young, the elderly, and people with suppressed immune systems
are particularly vulnerable to health problems caused by poor
indoor air quality. By getting your ducts cleaned, you can reduce
your risk from these indoor allergens and irritants.
Call us today for a no obligation furnace and duct cleaning quote.

Calgary’s Drainage System
The Ward 6 Office and City of Calgary Water Services respond to calls related to water pooling on streets
from blocked storm drains after a heavy rainfall. Storm drains/catch basins will drain water and snow melt off sidewalks, streets and
roads into the storm system, and eventually into our rivers.
There are approximately 50,000 storm drains in Calgary. Water Services calls are prioritized when responding to service requests from
Calgarians. Their number one concern is water entering houses, garages or businesses and causing property damage. Water pooling in
front of hospitals, schools, playgrounds and bus zones is also a high service priority.
During a storm or a heavy snow melt, storm drains pool water on the street, allowing the water to slowly drain into the pipes below.
In newer communities, Inlet Control Devices have been installed inside selected catch basins to keep water on the road until the
system can accept the surplus water. These devices prevent the storm system from being overwhelmed, causing water backups. If you
observe sustained pooling on the street, please be patient. It may not be flooding, rather a controlled water drainage in progress.
During the winter months, Water Services crews may on occasion have to employ the use of a boiler truck with special equipment
to thaw the ice below the catch basin surface and, consequently, the opening of water flow in the pipes. In the spring and summer, a
heavy rainfall can create a pooling havoc if the storm drains are clogged with debris and
garbage.
We do not recommend that residents attempt clearing catch basins themselves, as
potential hazards may exist under the water’s surface. However, if the storm drain is
not covered with water and it is safe to do so, you can clear the grate of debris, leaves,
snow or ice to generate better drainage.
Please do not pour or dump anything down a storm drain that is not rain water or
snowmelt. Let’s remember that what goes into the storm drain system flows directly
into our rivers without being treated at our wastewater treatment plants.
For more information or to report a catch basin issue, contact [email protected],
call 311, visit calgary.ca or use the City’s mobile app.
Spring Yard Waste Landfill Drop-off
From April 17 to May 31, all three City landfills will waive fees for residential loads of
leaves, branches, plants and other yard and garden material (no sod or soil, please). The
material will be composted at the sites, turning it back into a useful resource. Please
leave your material loose or put it in compostable bags, which can be composted along
with the yard waste. Please visit calgary.ca/waste or contact 311 to confirm landfill
hours, locations and details.

will be in attendance to answer questions or concerns you may have regarding your
community. For more information, please visit our website calgary.ca/ward6.
