Soil Blocking
Seed Starting for the Home Gardener and Market Farmer
 Easy to use. Once you’re equipped, all you add each
year are seeds and blocking mix.
 Convenient. 2 sets of small blocks fit on a 5” x 7” tray
(40 blocks). Watering is self contained.
 Higher rate of germination because of the ideal envi-
ronment.
 No transplant shock. Roots grow to the edge of the
block and wait. No root-bound plants.
 Earlier to bloom. Blocked seedlings hit the ground
running. No recovery period after planting.
It’s easy to start from seed!
1. Fill blocker chambers with
very wet blocking mix.
2. Scrape excess mix off.
4. Sow 1 seed per block with
a moistened toothpick.
5. Place blocks on heat mat
and keep evenly moist.
3. Squeeze plunger to make
20 small blocks.
6. Move from heat to light
when 50% have germinated.
8. The results!
7. Row cover provides protection
from the elements for newly planted
transplants. See pg. 21 for more.

About Annual Plants
The first step to growing beautiful annual flowers is to know that there are two types of annuals included in
this catalog; warm-season tender annuals and cool-season hardy annuals. Both follow the same lifecycle of
going from seed to flowering plant within one year---the difference is they are planted at very different times.
Tender annuals are planted when it is warm and hardy annuals are planted when it is cool.
When to plant hardy annuals: Hardy annuals thrive in cool conditions. When a hardy annual indicates
"Hardy to Zone __” it means that plant will survive winter in the indicated hardiness zone. When a plant will
survive in a given hardiness zone, you can plant it in the fall and it will survive winter. The benefit of fall planting is it becomes well‐established over the winter for better performance in spring. If the plant will not survive
in a given zone, then planting in early spring would be the choice. Fall is considered 6-8 weeks before your
first winter frost. Early spring is 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost.
When to plant tender annuals: Tender annuals thrive in warm conditions. Plant 2-3 weeks after your last
spring frost date and once the soil has begun to warm. Additional planting can be made throughout summer
for late season blooms. Tender annual seeds need heat to sprout and thrive--so wait approximately 3 weeks
after your last forecasted frost date to plant seeds outdoors. For the earliest blooms, start seeds indoors.
Having a transplant to plant in the garden as soon as it is warm enough brings blooms weeks earlier than
when planting seeds.

Black-Eyed Susan Rudbeckia hirta Our all-time favorite Black-Eyed Susans with their beautiful,
long-lasting blooms. Not invasive as the common native can be; these varieties reseed politely in your
garden. Plant seeds directly in the garden or start indoors. Prefers full sun. Hardy to zone 5.
Native plants feed native creatures. Black-eyed Susan blooms are a favorite of pollinators and especially
our native bees. Resist tidying up the garden and leave the blooms in the garden to develop seeds that the
birds will devour later in the season.

Floating Row Covers Uses
Lightweight floating row cover has many uses in the
garden. Use without hoops to lay directly on the bed or
use with hoops to support the cover which lends itself
for even more uses.
New Plantings: Cover new planting for the first 10-14 days after planting to protect while emerging or
becoming established. Lay it right on top of plants or sown seeds or use hoops. Hold in place with anchor
bags or large rocks. It protects the newly-planted seedlings from direct sunlight, drying winds, and damage from pests such as birds, rabbits, squirrels, and deer. Remove the cover once plants are established or
newly sprouted seeds have reached 3-4”.
Protect from Pest Damage: Hoop and cover plants immediately following planting to prevent exposure to insects. We have controlled or eliminated damage on squash plants from squash bugs, beans from
the bean beetle, potatoes from potato beetles and strawberry losses from birds.
Season Extension: Although the cover is lightweight, it offers enough protection to allow an early
start and to extend the season. Used with hoops, it creates what is called a low tunnel. The tunnel provides excellent protection from the cold wind and creates a more hospitable growing environment. The
cover provides 4 degrees of protection. I often use a double layer for additional protection.
Early Season: For maximum benefit prepare your early spring garden space in the fall. Mulch, hoop
and cover the empty bed to lay in wait for your early spring planting. In spring pull back mulch for seed
sowing or plant transplants through the mulch. The soil will be warmer and better equipped to receive
the planting. Leave cover on until warmer temperatures arrive. Late Season: Fall-planted cool-season
plants can perform longer into the fall and winter with a little added protection--excellent for the salad
garden. Plant the fall garden and cover when nights begin to drop in the 40’s. Remove the covers during
the day if temperatures climb. Flowers: When fall-planted hardy annuals that are intended to winter over
as young plants to become established for spring blooming are covered all winter they will grow into
more robust plants. They will produce more and begin blooming earlier than those without covers. Winter hoops and cover also provide excellent protection from deer. We fall-plant strawberries here in zone 7
and keep them covered from planting until the following May harvest.
