“Eye-Opening” for Graduating Class
The Leadership
Hunterdon Class of
2014 graduated on June
19th at a ceremony held
at Copper Hill Country
Club, and the
experience was not only extremely
educational for all of the graduates
involved, but motivational.
For 10 months, the class was
immersed in a “behind the scenes”
overview of Hunterdon County that
explored the many facets that shape
the current make-up of the County.
One day a month the class attended
sessions that targeted specific
aspects, such as business, education,
agriculture, health & wellness,
financial, legal, criminal and
prevention and economic
development; from these sessions the
class was able to celebrate the
positive characteristics of living and
running a business in Hunterdon
County, understand the challenges

Google Plus at Leads South
Leads South had a very informative
Constant Contact seminar during its
June meeting and to keep the
momentum going, the next mini
seminar will focus on Google Plus,
Google's answer to Facebook. It will
take place on Thursday, July 10th at
7:30 AM at the ACME Screening
Room, located at 25 South Union
Street in Lambertville. Leads South is
held every second Thursday of each
month.
Do you know that if you have a Gmail
account, you automatically have a
Google Plus page that you can
populate with photos and status
updates, just like Facebook? Do you
know that instead of friends, Google
offers "circles" that you can use to
network and grow your business?
While Google Plus is not quite the

“social media monster” like Facebook,
it does offer things that Facebook
does not, namely a place on Google.
This is especially useful for
businesses. Just think….when you
want to search for anything online,
where do you go?
July's mini-seminar, presented by Bill
Brokaw of Brokaw Photography, will
provide a general overview of Google
Plus and how to set up your page.
While it seems like Google Plus may
be one more thing we don't have time
for, it is useful to learn what it is and
see if it would be useful for your
business. Google Plus just might be
an emerging trend as people begin to
drift away from Facebook.

Leadership the Challenge...
This excerpt is taken from the
Harvard Business Review…
“An inspiring historical story is once
again making the rounds at least
partially because of its inclusion in
Malcolm Gladwell’s new book, “David
and Goliath.” In it, Gladwell tells the
story of the French town of Le
Chambon-sur-Lignon, which became a
safe haven for Jews in Nazi-occupied
France during World War II. Led by
minister André Trocmé, the residents of
Le Chambon-sur-Lignon saved
between 3,000 and 3,500 Jews (in
addition to others seeking refuge) from
1940 until the end of the war, bringing
them into the community and hiding
them from French and Nazi officials. By
any measure, their actions were
courageous and inspiring. They were

We often think of
leadership as a
solitary task. Buying
into Thomas Carlyle’s
“great man” theory of
history, we speak of
leadership in solitary Christopher J. Phelan
and personal terms.
And certainly, history is filled with
examples of men and women like
Trocmé, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela,
and Mother Theresa who took bold
individual action. But most real change
— even the change driven by those
aforementioned l eaders — is
community-driven and communityfocused. Some of the greatest
accomplishments in business, politics,
and culture have come not from
individual initiative alone but from those
working in, with,and for community.”
This thought analysis that leadership
has come from not just individual but
working together as a community has
been one of the explorations for the
past three years of our Leadership
Hunterdon Program. Through the
collective experiences of our now 30
alumni, we have begun to see the
real impact that the experience has
had both individually and collectively
for our County. Leadership
Hunterdon takes our participants
each month and allows them to meet
and interact with the key leadership

The challenges that we face as a
County and, especially as a business

The staggering vacancy rate of
commercial properties in our County
impact our residential taxes greatly.
The challenge of looking at
re-purposing former uses of
commercial properties into new and
mixed use create an opportunity to
look towards a brighter future.
Most importantly the ability to retain
and grow our existing business is the
most critical task at hand. Hunterdon
County, collectively as a community
and as a business community,
cannot afford to lose anymore
business to other parts of New
Jersey, PA or beyond. I think if one
major opportunity I see is that we, as
a Community, can address these
challenges, that we can collectively
take some bold action.

when, we as a Community, stand
together and face the opportunities
that lie ahead….

Technology Showcase New at This Year’s EXPO
The Hunterdon County Chamber of
Commerce is proud to announce the
addition of the Technology Showcase
to this year’s Business EXPO, which
will take place on Tuesday, October
14th at Power Time Sports Arena on
Case Blvd. in Flemington from 2:00
pm - 7:00 pm. The Technology
Showcase will bring together
companies that produce and sell next
generation technology with industry
experts and businesses will have the
opportunity to educate themselves on
the latest technologies that will be
make themselves competitive in the
online world.
The Business EXPO is the only show
of its kind in Hunterdon County and
there will be a variety of industries
represented. The Expo is an excellent

local business owners face-to-face
and support their neighbors in these
economically challenging times. It's
also an important event for local

community leaders and ultimately
empower the class to become
leaders of the community. The class
was divided into two teams and each
team was responsible for writing a
White Paper that researched an
issue that’s critical to Hunterdon
County with the intent on becoming a
source of critical thinking to be
included in future work surrounding
the identified issues.
Team Entrepreneur, comprised of
Rudi Matthijs of Unity Bank, Rebecca
Fracchia of Raritan Valley
Community College, Peggy Dowd of
Hunterdon Prevention Resources
and Kim Blanda of Hunterdon
Healthcare, focused their White
Paper on the state of
entrepreneurship in Hunterdon
County. The paper delved into the
current entrepreneurs’ success
strategies and challenges in
Hunterdon. In addition, practical
information regarding financing,
education and numerous resources
was included for those thinking about
starting their own business in
Hunterdon. “Originally we set out to
put together a useful guide for those
wanting to start a business in
Hunterdon County but as we started
speaking with business owners and
entrepreneurs, we expanded our
paper to a broader audience, hoping
that legislatures and regulators could
understand the challenges of
entrepreneurs and also the
importance of developing future
ones,” explained Kim Blanda. Some
of the challenges the team explored
for entrepreneurs include regulations
with signage, lengthy permit
processes, slow growth, and, in
particular, gaining capital. “Capital is
the most difficult challenge for new
business owners. A large section of
our paper was assistance with
raising capital,” explained Blanda.
Additionally, one concentration of the
paper focused on the Agricultural
Community in the County and the
many challenges small farmers are
facing that is endangering the
viability of farming in the future. In
the end, the team was encouraged
by the entrepreneurs they talked to
by their passion for the community
and their willingness to give back.
“The Leadership Hunterdon
experience has been an unbelievable
journey. I have learned so much
about Hunterdon County and met
some amazing people. I have
already been able to reach out to
many of the contacts I have made to
assist me with my job as Clinical
Liaison at Hunterdon Regional
Community Health, part of the
Hunterdon Healthcare System,”
added Blanda. “Leadership
Hunterdon was a unique learning
experience,” added Peggy Dowd.
“Where many leadership programs
stress the development of certain
skills, this program gave us the
hands on knowledge about leaders in
every sector of Hunterdon. It

take on leadership roles not only
within our organization but within our

Team Trail Blazers, comprised of
Chris Bianco of Blue Panther
Business Partners, Andy Ross of
Bedard, Kurowicki & Co., CPA’s, PC,
Lori Daigle, formerly with the
Commerce and Heidi Postma of
Hunterdon Radiological Associates,
focused their White Paper on the
state of business in Hunterdon
County. Entitled “Successful
Business Habits within Hunterdon
County Business Environment,” the
team identified six mature
businesses headquartered in
Hunterdon County whose
characteristics strategically
positioned them for success
throughout the past to the present
within the County’s business
environment. In talking with these
business owners, the team “asked
them why they started their
businesses in the County, and to
assess the current and future
economic trends in the County,”
explained Andy Ross. “In addition,
we did some research to get some
current statistics about the County
(the healthiest and the wealthiest
county in NJ) and attended a
Hunterdon County Comprehensive
Economic Development Strategy
(CEDS) to get more insight into
current and future business trends in
the County. “The team concluded
that there are many hurdles
businesses today have to clear in the
political arena that hinder growth and
opportunity. The business owners
who the team interviewed with
agreed that the process of starting
and owning a business in Hunterdon
County was a lot easier than today
and that neighboring counties in New
Jersey and Bucks County, PA are
more conducive to economic growth
in the political arena than in
Hunterdon County. And while there
is a focus on revitalization with the
County, the Flemington BID as a
positive example, county leaders
need to focus on growing the
population, especially focusing on
the younger demographics, and
improve its transportation
infrastructure in order to retain and
grow jobs.
“I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with
passionate people and learning of
their contributions to the County’s
culture and life style,” said Chris
Bianco. “I am looking forward to
using my acquired understanding of
Hunterdon County to explain the
complex issues of the County on my
Hunterdon Chamber Radio show,
Good Morning Hunterdon, and
spurring growth of my client
businesses as a business
improvement specialist.”
The teams spent a lot of time and
hard work researching and writing on
these pertinent issues and the
Chamber encourages everyone to
read both teams’ White Papers.

available at the Chamber office and
will also be available online.

The Chamber will be conducting three
ribbon cuttings in July.
On Tuesday, July 8th at 5 PM the
Chamber will be celebrating the
opening of Hair Studio 55, located at
55 Old Highway 22 in Clinton.
On Wednesday, July 9th at 5 PM the
Chamber will be celebrating the
opening of Loew Orthodontics’
second location, located at 1465 Route
31 South, Suite #9 in Annandale.

honored this year’s “Guardians of
History” award winners at their Gala
Benefit. The 2014 honorees, ShopRite
of Hunterdon County, Walter
Choroszewski and Donna Stumm,
have helped promote the rich history
of Hunterdon County through
volunteerism, public education and
in-kind and monetary support. The
Red Mill Museum Village staff and
Board of Trustees thank all the
individuals and businesses that
supported the event through
attending, sponsoring, donating and
volunteering.
Hunterdon Healthcare hosted a
special Volunteer Recognition Awards
luncheon during “National Volunteer
Week.” Last year, more than 500
volunteers supported Hunterdon
Medical Center and contributed
60,183 hours of service, equaling
$1,524,435 dollars worth of volunteer
time. At the luncheon, the Hunterdon
Medical Center Lobby Shop donated
$90,000 to the Hunterdon Medical
Center Foundation from the proceeds
of the gift shop.
Local law enforcement were honored
by the Hunterdon County
Prosecutor’s Office and Hunterdon
Prevention Resources for their
participation in utilizing the Law
Enforcement Adolescent Program
(LEAP), an early intervention program
which serves as a diversion from the
legal system for adolescents who are
arrested for a minor offense and who
have had no prior record. The
program was created to decrease the
number of juveniles entering the legal
court system by providing them and
their family with support and
assistance.
The Delaware Valley Bead Society
donated ball caps to the Hunterdon
Regional Cancer Center.

The 11th Annual Creativity
Expo 2014/Brain Injury
Arts Show, featuring the
creative works of brain
injury survivors, will be
held at the Raritan Valley
Community College Art Gallery, July
12-20. An opening reception will be
held July 12, from noon-4 pm in the
Art Gallery at the College’s
Branchburg Campus. Admission is
free. Refreshments will be served.

the “Drop a Dress Size in 21 Days”

This summer the Red Mill Museum
Village will offer two, one-day summer
camps. Fun & Games Camp, will be
held on July 16 from 9:30 am-12:30
pm; campers will learn and play
historic children’s games from the 18th
and 19th centuries and make their
own historic toys to take home.
Cooking and Crafting Camp will be
held August 13 from 9:30 am-12:30
pm. Campers will try their hand at
making Colonial-era recipes which will
be served as a snack; they will also
make Colonial-era crafts to take
home. Both camps are appropriate for
children entering 1st through 5th
grade. Registration fee: $25 for
Museum Members, $35 for

With the advent of the Affordable Care
Act, many small business owners and
their employees who don’t have
conventional health care coverage
through their spouse’s employer are
looking for affordable health care
plans. To save premium dollars,
many of these business owners opt
for high deductible health plans. The
IRS provides tax benefits for such
qualifying plans with the establishment
of health savings accounts (HSA’s).
An HSA must have a minimum
annual deductible for either self-only
or family coverage. Once you have
established an HSA, you can deduct
from your taxable gross income (even
if you are unable to itemize
deductions on Schedule A) the
amount you pay annually for your
premiums, up to a certain limit. For
individuals over age 55, this annual
allowable amount is increased by
Health Savings Accounts
$1,000. You can use this health
savings account to pay for your outof-pocket medical expenses. As long
as you use HSA distributions for
qualified medical expenses for
yourself, your spouse, or your
dependents, the HSA distributions are
tax-free. However, if you use the
HSA for any other purpose, the
disqualifying distributions will be
subject to tax and penalty.
The advantage to an HSA is that
ordinarily these medical expenses
would be deductible to you only if
you can itemize deductions, and you
can only deduct the amount of the
medical expenses that exceed 10%
of your adjusted gross income. With
the HSA, you can deduct your
annual contributions to the account,
regardless of whether you can
itemize deductions or the amount of
your adjusted gross income.
