February - Down the Road Corvettes
DtRC President
Les Rhoades
Let’s not forget why we
joined a Corvette Club!
I’m sure Down the Road Corvette Club members
will agree that this club is all about having fun
with our Corvettes; socializing with other Corvette enthusiasts. Unlike our lucky and warmer
all season states like Florida for example, living
here in Colorado offers us a much shorter Corvette season, so we have to get out and enjoy
Corvette life as much as we can in that short time
period. It can seem overwhelming when we are
forced to schedule so many activities into just a
few short months of snowless sunshine. Participate as much as you can.
Next Meeting: , March 26, 2015 (7 pm)
4th Thursday of the month
Emich Chevrolet
2033 S. Wadsworth Lakewood CO
Dinner before the meeting: 5:30 pm
El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant

Lakewood, CO 80235
We coordinate and participate in many activities
outside our monthly meetings. ( a once a month
excuse to take the Corvette out for a spin) Mystery meal cruises have taken us all over Colorado
and into adjoining states. We have visited the Air
and Space Museum at Perterson Air Force Base,
driven high (not literally) into the Colorado
Rocky mountains to view the Fall colors and tour
the old West as it was at the outdoor living history museum of South Park City, Who can forget
stopping at the 1872 Territorial Prison State Historic Site in Laramine Wyoming.

We always get a good turnout for short weekend cruises,
like last year’s trip to Santa Fe New Mexico and Roswell
to visit the aliens. Our club members also enjoyed the
scenic Chama Train Ride. We are not afraid to add some
miles on the odometer and venture out on long road trips
to other states to enjoy Corvette club events. A few of us
went to the 2014 National Corvette Caravan to Kentucky
and beyond. We participate in road rallies, car shows and
cruise nights. Several of us like to open the throttle at
autocross events and track days. DtRC’s annual autocross
at the Colorado Highway Patrol track in Golden is especially fun for our club members and the Corvette community. A tradition I hope will continue in years to come.
This club offers you the opportunity to meet other people
who share your passion for Corvettes and promote the
enjoyment of all aspects of Corvette ownership. We share
this through social activities, events, preservation and
operation of Corvettes. Let us not forget the wonderful
NCRS activities. We offer sponsorship and promotion of
events and the dissemination of technical and practical
information thought our award wining newsletter. We
may be a small club, but we have a lot to be proud of. I
encourage our members to volunteer when they can and
offer suggestions to improve our club.

IMAX movie; D-Day: Normandy 1944
It may still be winter here in Colorado, but that does
not stop the club from organizing social events. On
January 31st 2015 a small group of DtRC members
rallied together at the Denver Museum of Nature and
Science to watch the IMAX movie; D-Day: Normandy
1944.
After the movie we all went to the local Village in for
pie and coffee.
Club and family members in attendance: Les, Kelly &
Dana, Walt and Michele, Jack, Ingrid & Logan, Bill &
Cathy, Dave & Nancy, Paul,
June 6, 1944: The largest Allied operation of World
War II began in Normandy, France. The new IMAX
3D film D-Day: Normandy 1944 seamlessly blends
stunning computer-generated images, live-action reenactments, and historic photos and film to recount this
carefully planned mission. The film pays tribute to the
millions of men and women, soldiers and civilians,
who give their lives for freedom. A duty of memory, a
duty of gratitude.

CRUISIN’ . . .
to the
CORVETTE MUSEUM
Summer’s approaching and our club
is planning a July trip to Boise’s
VetteFest, followed by a week-long
cruise. But since VetteFest is held
every two years, how about DtRC
cruising to the National Corvette
Museum in 2016? It would be a fun club event, and we
can begin planning a road trip this year! Anticipating
you’ll like the idea, I’ve outlined some planning details
here.
Choosing a special club weekend offers a totally
unique Museum experience. The staff helps customize
the trip to suit the club’s particular interests and schedule. While clubs can visit any time during the year, the
Museum suggests that visits not coincide with its major
events, like the Bash, the C4 Gathering, and the Labor
Day Celebration; this helps the staff better plan clubspecific activities.
NCM’s Club Visit Package includes: a guided behindthe-scenes Museum tour, Assembly Plant tour, Corvette
Café boxed lunches, and commemorative club-visit
badges with lanyard. As an added perk, the Museum’s
Club Meeting Room is available to the club during its
visit. And as available, Motorsports Park offers parade
laps, touring laps, and hot laps.
The Museum has developed itineraries to local points
of interest, along with self-guided and guided cruises of
the surrounding scenic countryside. NCM also assists
with recommendations and reservations at local restaurants, and can plan a dinner at the Museum to complete
a memorable visit.
corvettemuseum.org
1-800-538-3883
We’ll likely get our visit date of choice as NCM can accommodate more than one club, having hosted as many
as six club visits at a time. The cost is $20 for members
and $25 for non-members. The cruise to Bowling Green
from here takes 2 days, with an overnight stay in eastern
Missouri. The length of stay and return trip options can
be the club’s choice.
If you’re interested in a future fun Museum cruise, let me
know at one of our meetings or club events. I’ll be glad
to set up a cruise-visit, including the route and accommodations along the way, to and from the Museum.
NEWS & NOTES. . .
Per mention in the last Docket, the Museum’s Hall of
Fame inductees have been announced for the racing,
enthusiast, and GM/Chevrolet categories. To be honored
at the Labor Day weekend Sept.4th banquet are: Herb
Fishel, an engineer who worked with Zora in 1964 and
started the factory racing team, became the Director and
Executive Director of Chevrolet racing. Rick
Hendrick, an enthusiast who purchased his first dealership at 23, and in1984 established Hendrick Motorsports
for racing endeavors, now has more than 120 franchises
as part of the Hendrick Automotive Group. As most of
you know, he recently bought the 2015 VIN #1 Z06 for
$1-million. Russ McLean was assigned by GM management in 1990 to turn the troubled Corvette program
around, with orders to let Corvette die. Instead, he covertly worked with other “rebels” to keep Corvette going,
and working in the shadows was able to save Corvette.
I’ll have $10 raffle tickets for a 2015 Arctic White convertible with black top at the March meeting. Because
the drawing is scheduled for April 25th during the NCM
Bash, the March meeting will be your last chance to purchase raffle tickets from me.

Tomato Tart
Ingredients
4 Tablespoons Butter
2 whole Large Onions,
Halved And Sliced Thin
Salt And Pepper, to taste
2 whole Store bought Pie Crusts
(or 1 Good Sized Homemade Crust)
1-1/2 cup Grated Fontina Cheese (or Monterey Jack)
1/4 cup Grated Parmesan
1/4 cup Grated Gruyere (or Swiss)
3 cups Cherry Tomatoes (yellow Or Red), Washed And
Dried (more If Needed)
1 whole Egg
1/4 cup Milk
16 whole Basil Leaves, Chiffonade (more If Needed)
Preparation Instructions
Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the butter,
onions, salt, and pepper and cook for 20 to 25 minutes,
stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and deep
golden brown. Set aside.
Preheat the oven to 450 F.
Smush both pie crusts into a ball, knead it around a bit to
combine them, then roll it out into one large, thin crust.
Lay onto a shallow quarter sheet pan, a tart pan, or cut in
half and use 2 standard pie pans. Sprinkle on the cheeses
in a single layer, then lay on the caramelized onions, then
sprinkle the tomatoes over the cheese.
Mix together the egg and milk in a small bowl and brush it
all over the crust around the edge of the tart. Bake the tart
for 15 to 18 minutes, watching carefully to make sure the
crust doesn't burn. (The tomatoes should be starting to
burst apart, with some dark/roasted areas on the skin, and
the crust should be deep golden brown.) If the crust is getting brown too fast, reduce the heat to 425 F.
Remove the tart from the oven and allow it to sit for 5
minutes. Sprinkle the basil all over the top. Cut
into squares and serve!Posted by Ree | The Pioneer Woman on August 20 2014
Kitchen Tips for the Month of March
1. Olives – Good for Nausea
Olives contain tannins, which are chemicals that
help slow down the excessive production of saliva
(one of the first symptoms of motion sickness).
Eat a few green or black olives as soon as you start
to feel woozy.
2. Apples should be stored in a ventilated plastic
bag in the fridge, as they release gases that can accelerate ripening in other vegetables.
3. If you need to measure syrup or honey, swish
vegetable oil around in the measuring cup first to
prevent sticking.
4. To get more juice from a lemon, halve it and
heat in the microwave for 30 to 40 seconds. Let
cool, then squeeze.
Mini Ricotta Pizzas
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Brush
two rimmed baking sheets each with
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil.
Divide 1 pound prepared pizza dough
into 16 pieces and, on a lightly
floured work surface, press each piece into a 2inch round with the palm of your hand. Transfer
to sheets, flipping once to coat lightly with oil.
Season with coarse salt and ground pepper. Divide 8 ounces ricotta (1 cup) among rounds and
season with salt and pepper. Bake until dough is
crisp and golden brown, about 15 minutes. Driz-

RADIO
CHECK
It’s that time of year when you need to start thinking about club road
trips and cruises. How are you going to stay in touch with us? You
need a set of radios! Yes, there are many choices on the market and the
prices can get out of hand if you look at the professional models. You
just need a simple set of radios that will do the job for a day’s outing. I
have been using this set of radio for that last couple of years and they
work fine for our needs.
An eVOX mode with 9 sensitivity levels
provides easy voice activation for handsfree transmission only when you speak.
The radio has a JIS4 waterproof rating to
protect against light rain or splashing water from all directions. Mic and headphone
jacks are provided, allowing you to use
the radios with the included headsets.
Each radio can operate on the included
rechargeable batteries, or on 4 standard
AA batteries. The included desktop
charger and AC adapter allow you to
charge both radios via a single wall outlet,
while the DC adapter lets you charge a
radio in a vehicle.
Works with FRS/GMRS radios
X-TRA TALK power is the maximum
allowed by law
Midland GXT1000VP4 50-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio
Currently sold on Amazon.com for $59.25, fee shipping (Goggle it)
They are feature-packed and convenient way to stay in touch on club
road trips, at car show events and much more. Each radio has 22 selectable standard channels, plus 28 extra channels for extra privacy. Midland states the radios offers up to 36 miles of range, but we have found
that 2-3 is about it when traveling down the road. There are 387 privacy
codes, giving you up to 5560 channel options to block other conversations.
The radio has a weather scan function that scans the active weather
channel in your area. It also has an automatic NOAA alert for severe
weather hazard information 24/7. An SOS siren is provided, allowing
you to send a distress/locator signal in an emergency. An auto squelch
feature removes annoying background noise for clear communication. A
direct call feature lets you contact one member of your party without
alerting others.
Whisper mode lets you whisper, but
the receiving radio hears you at full volume
A "roger" beep indicates call completion

Michele & I are ready to enjoy the Vette we bought last spring.
There's not many others like it in the area, but we felt that the car
needed something to set it apart from the crowd. The white paint
with silver stripes is nice, but it's still a white car!
We contacted Big Dog Wraps & Graphics, (bigdogwraps.com) in
Castle Rock with some ideas. Working with their designer, Blake
Davis, we came up with this design. We wanted something simple, yet bold and that is an eye catcher. Once we had the design,
we worked at matching the silver to the factory stripes. No luck,
we contacted GM and found out the strips were made by 3M for
Chevrolet only for the 60th anniversary cars and isn't available to
the general public. So we matched the silver as close as possible.
Big Dog did a SUPER job installing the wrap. I had removed the
inner fenders , front fender flares and the brake ducts so it could
be wrapped into those openings. Once Big Dog started to install
the wrap, they found they needed to loosen or remove the rear
fenders, (fender flares) to be able to wrap the vinyl around the
edges. It took 2 full days to install the wrap and reassemble the
car. Big Dog is currently doing our helmets to match the car.
Looking forward to cruising with DtRC this summer !!!!

NCRS CONVENTION in DENVER this SUMMER
ave you ever attended a
National Corvette Restorers Society
(NCRS) national convention?
Those of you who won’t be going along on DtRC’s
July club trip to VetteFest in Boise ID and the road
trip afterward, take heart! You can still enjoy a Corvette event that week right here in Denver --- the
NCRS national convention July 19-24. The NCRS
Rocky Mountain Chapter is hosting it at the spacious
Crowne Plaza Hotel & Convention Center (50,000 indoor sq-ft) at Denver International Airport.
NCRS was formed in 1974 to preserve, restore, and
enjoy early Corvettes and related material, as well as
encourage and publish studies and research pertaining
to their history. Also NCRS conducts meetings, tours,
and programs of any sort relating to the development
and history of Corvette.
NCRS judging is recognized as the “standard” in determining originality. Certifying judges on the highest
qualifications, the Judging System is designed to educate owners about their Corvettes, and provide recognition for excellence in the areas of restoration, performance, or preservation.
Unlike car shows where Corvettes compete against
each other in their specific classes, each Corvette is
judged against NCRS standards. Entrants work diligently to bring their Corvettes up to NCRS standards
based on assembly plant criteria established for each
year. That is, each Corvette must look, perform, and
drive as it was shipped from the assembly plant. Judging is thorough, and not all entrants meet all criteria
established by NCRS. Fortunately, entrants who don’t
achieve success can enter future judged events to correct failed items.
At this year’s convention, Vintage Corvettes (19531996) will be judged by teams of NCRS experienced
and qualified members. Judged categories will include:
Flight Judging (1953-1996)
Duntov Award (1953-1974)
Dave McLellan Award (1975-1992)
Dave Hill Award (1993-1996)
Star/Bowtie (1953-1982)
Cross Flags (1984-1996)
Performance Verification (1953-1996)
Year of the 1965 Display
NCRS Sportsman Display (1953-2015)
DtRC members Russ and LaNae Steinhaus have entered
their 1965 Milano Maroon coupe in the Duntov Award
category. Their coupe has achieved Performance Verification status, and can be seen along with other 1965
Corvettes in the “Year of the 1965 Display.”
This is your chance to see many beautiful vintage Corvettes in one location, talk to judges, and mingle with
NCRS members. If you feel like you missed the DtRC
road-tour fun after VetteFest, join the 3-day Colorado
mountain-road-tour planned for July 21-23 as part of the
NCRS festivities.
Registration opened February 1st. You can save money
with a discounted registration fee by registering for the
National Convention online at www.NCRS.org/events.
The discounted family fee is $135.
I hope you can attend some or all of the sessions. While
you’re there, stop by and say hello to Russ, LaNae, and
me… all active members of the Rocky Mountain Chapter. Who knows, maybe you’ll want to become a member too!

C-6 Corvette Battery Maintenance (C-5 is similar)
While
getting in the
2011 the other day, I
turned the key, got a
funky noise out of the
starter. I determined it
was low battery. Well, it
turns out that after trying
to charge the battery back
to full voltage, my 10+
year old battery maintainer
Leo Lamanuzzi
DtRC VP
was no good. I decided to
wait a couple of days before pulling the battery out. When I went to
open the car door, I could not because now the
battery is too low on voltage and the doors/
hatch are locked!! So now I have to use the
key to open the hatch so I can pull the cable on
the left inner hatch side to release the driver’s
door. Such fun….
Well, with the rear hatch now open, I removed
the battery, got a new one, made sure it was up
to full charge, placed it in the battery compartment, made the positive connection first, then
the negative, connected the breather hose to
the topside of the battery.
Now with the battery properly in place and secured, the space allowed in the rear compartment is tight, I waited ten minutes for the
“systems” to all come on line, pushed the start
button and the car started. This is good!
Lamanuzzi ‘s C6 Grand Sport
NOTE:
It only takes a couple of minutes to check the
battery cables/terminal connections to make sure
they are clean. Also, take a look under your
fuse/ relay box located under the hood and make
sure this area is also clean, inside and out.
When your car is started, voltage indicates close
to 13.4 volts, it will increase to 14.0 volts to 14.7
volts when running. Also note that 2005 model
should be left in REVERSE (6 speed cars only)

C5 Battery Leak
Since the leak is at the top side of the battery it requires
more “slosh” to lower the acid level enough to damage
the battery or affect battery performance. The battery is
generally neglected unless it is causing an obvious
problem, so the leak persists and slowly causes major
damage.
by Chris Petris
(Reprinted with permission from Corvette Central)
If you own a squeaky clean C5, you’re still likely concerned about an acidic force that could be slowly destroying your prized possession: Battery electrolytic
acid leakage.
I once heard a chilling story of a leaking battery in a C5
that resulted in a repair bill of approximately $8K. The
acid destroyed multiple wire harnesses and the TAC
(Throttle Actuator Control) module.
I have dealt with many C5s that presented with A/C
concerns and found no vacuum to operate the mode
doors. Upon further inspection and testing, I found battery acid had destroyed the plastic vacuum lines that
control the A/C system. In one case, battery acid was
being drawn up the engine harness with engine vacuum. In all these cases the plastic vacuum line was replaced and any wire harness damage was minor and
repairable. Even these repair bills were $400-800. Extensive damage is certainly possible if the problem is
ignored until electrical components start to do peculiar
things. Enough with the dark side! As an owner, you
can spot the problem and have it addressed before major damage occurs.
Any wet cell battery is subject to leakage and side terminal batteries have an additional burden of holding
back liquid acid. The lead side terminal is bonded to
the plastic case to prevent leaks, but rough handling can
loosen the bond. Over-tightening the battery cable retaining bolt can also break the bond. If the battery cable
retaining bolt is too long, it can crack the lead terminal
and allow acid to flow out of the bolt threads. Overheating during battery charging can damage the case
and start a leak. This will be evident when you notice
the battery case bulging out on all four sides. Acid can
also leak at the seam where the top and outer case bond
together. There are products that may stop the flow, but
for how long? Some battery manufacturers have paid
for damages caused by leaking acid though it is difficult to pinpoint what caused the problem. Rough handling or poor construction? The concern is increased
when a side terminal battery is in a C5 because it sits
on top of some very important components. The acid
has a tendency to flow along the battery cable that has
the leaky terminal. In this case, damage may be occurring out of sight. Although all earlier Corvettes will incur damage from a leaking side terminal battery it is
not as catastrophic.
If you find a white powdery film on the battery terminal retaining bolt or on the outside of the battery cable,
you have an acid leak. In some cases, the terminal retaining bolt and cable is clean but there is an acid trail
down the battery below the terminal. What do you do?
Change to a top post? Installing a top post will obviously change the look and require a positive and negative battery cable change or cutting off the O.E. terminals and installing those hokey repair terminals.
Continued next page
14
If you are using an O.E. or aftermarket replacement
battery, install a Battery Mat first (part # 171002) to
soak up any acid that might leak. The Battery Mat is a
treated fiber mat that will retain and neutralize the acid.
You still have to keep an eye on the terminals for the
white corrosive powder because it is warning you that
most likely acid is permeating the battery cable and
headed towards the starter. –
These gray connectors are used to connect the various
computers together and are located next to the battery,
near the positive cable. Check all the gray connectors
for damage. If they are intact, use the baking soda and
water mixture here also. If the connectors are damaged,
the terminals may also be damaged, so keep the water
away from them until their condition is evaluated.
This positive terminal retaining bolt is showing minor
corrosion. This is the best time to catch a problem. The
cable terminal is not corroded and replacing the retaining bolt will eliminate further corrosion. The part number for correct cable retaining bolts is 173028 for 19692004 Corvettes. Be sure to check the length of original
bolt before putting the replacement in the battery.
This battery terminal looks harmless but it is already
showing signs of leakage. The shiny lead will be dull in
short time once the acid takes over. Tiny droplets of
acid are near the terminal and it appears that the top of
the battery is not bonded properly to the case on this
battery. Be wary of this area!
With the battery tray removed, you can see the harnesses below the battery along with the PCM
(Powertrain Control Module) and TAC module. If this
area has had battery acid spillage, thoroughly mix some
baking soda and water (small box + quart water) and
pour the mixture over the entire area. Then hose it out
with tap water
If the plastic looms are damaged, seek professional
help. The wiring condition will need to be evaluated
to see if it can be saved or if replacement is required.
