Dear Ms. Clasen,
Waddell Spirit wear
I have rarely – if ever – in my career experienced such a dynamic group of
young students. You and the teachers from North Carolina should all be
congratulated for the terrific work you do and for making this exchange
program possible. I very much regret not being able to take part in your
Buddy Bear unveiling, but I wish you and the students a wonderful
event. Please pass on to the students my very best regards and apologies.

Construction on the Waddell campus next year!
I want to let all Waddell families know about a year of construction on our campus. The
“replacement” school for Nations Ford ES will be built in back of the Waddell campus, in
an area that is currently wooded and largely unused (except for the outer soccer field).
The current Nations Ford ES, on the other side of I-77, is old and overcrowded. The biggest impact on Waddell: construction traffic. The road originally envisioned to access
the new campus will not be built; instead, NFES will use the road alongside the tennis
courts that continues past the cafeteria. That road will be extended back to the new
site. As you know, our carpool pattern uses that same road. We will be working on “staggered” times when construction vehicles will avoid the carpool traffic. However, we are strongly recommending to all families that next school
year will be a really great year to ride the school bus. We will have construction drawings at the SLT meeting for you to
review.
Language / Testing Update
Although EOGs are scheduled to begin on May 21, a great deal of assessment is already taking
place at almost every grade level. We’ve completed the third round of MAP testing, which
helps teachers (and parents) gauge growth against national norms, and supports targeted instruction when skills have not been mastered. 1-to-1 reading tests are taking place in K-3 classes, in accordance with NC laws. If your student is missing an English class, it’s because our
English teachers are often the test administrators. With 680 students in K-3, that is a lot of 1-to
testing time.

A really exciting assessment is taking place in our immersion languages. CMS funded our piloting of the AAPPL tests –
that is ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages – in grades 5 and 8. Technology allows us to
conduct these assessments on line! Unlike any other assessment, the AAPPL addresses the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and uses today’s communication media in which test takers perform tasks such as participating in a virtual video chat, creating wikis, e-mailing, and using apps to demonstrate language ability. The AAPPL assesses all 4 modes of communication: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. ACTFL has not yet developed the
AAPPL for Japanese, but we hope that is in the works; this first year we will assess students in German, French and Chinese.
Our students are also demonstrating their language proficiency on tests designed and administered by other countries
– these include the YCT and HSK (Chinese) and A1/A2/DSD1 (German). French is coming soon. Comparing and analyzing the results of these different assessments will help us evaluate our K-8 program and make decisions leading to continuous improvement.

Calling all devoted parents and/or exceptional volunteers!
The end of the school year is quickly approaching and with that we have testing just on the
horizon. We need YOU (that's right, YOU) for our EOG/EOC/NCFE/EOY tests as proctors!
There are a variety of days from May 21st-June 1st, from 7:45 am- 12:00 noon where we are in
great need of your assistance. No previous experience or training is required! We will provide
you with everything you need to know. If interested, please sign up on the following Google
form:http://goo.gl/forms/jTudXhLJue. We thank you in advance for your time and energy!
Students from Japanese Language Immersion perform at UNCC
The third annual “Fureai Nihongo” – a collaborative presentation of Japanese language studies by students from
Waddell Language Academy, South Mecklenburg High School, West
Mecklenburg High School and UNC Charlotte took place at the UNC
Charlotte campus this past Saturday, April 25th. Students of Japanese language in Charlotte from kindergarten all the way through the
university undergraduate level had the opportunity to showcase
what they are learning in the classroom as well as through study
abroad programs to Japan. The presentation kicked off with a song
by the kindergarten students from the Japanese immersion program
at Waddell Language Academy. The performances that followed included: The differences between Japanese &
American schools, the secret life of Sea Otters, a modern version of “Momotaro” or Peach Boy, and an animated
performance of one of the popular J-Pop songs, among other excellent performances. Students from the Waddell
Language Academy Middle School as well as UNC Charlotte presented their experiences during their study abroad
trips to Japan. The Collaborative Presentation concluded with a powerful
Japanese drum performance by the Waddell Taiko Club.

Greetings from The National Theatre for
Children!
We are having a wonderful year touring our "resource-wise" program, The Treasure Trove of Conservation Cove. Students and staff at
almost 2,000 schools have signed up for over 50,000 free energy efficiency kits from Duke Energy. We are thrilled that so many people
have taken action to save energy through this program. As spring is
blooming and Earth Day approaches, we are gearing up for one last
energy-saving push to cap off the year!
In celebration of Earth Day, we have a new energy-saving prize:
$150 Green Doubloon Certificates!
Right now, Waddell Language Academy has signed up for 115 free
energy kits. If your school gains 25 new energy efficiency kit sign-ups
from now through Earth Day (April 22), your school will receive the
Green Doubloon Certificate! Schools that win Green Doubloon Certificates will be contacted on Thursday, April 23, and will receive a $150
check. Who said it wasn't easy being green?
Sign up and credit your school and grade level at
