He will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for
the Master, prepared for every good work.
2 Timothy 2:21
The word hallow isn’t used much anymore, and when it
is, the uses have a broad range of meaning. Christians
use the word when we say the Lord’s prayer, as in “Hallowed be Thy name.” Often the word is associated with
the last day of October, which we in the US refer to as
Halloween, a shortened form of All Hallows’ Eve.
In Scripture, the word hallow is a synonym for the word
sanctify. When we hallow or sanctify something, we set
it apart as being holy.
The name of God is not the only thing that we are to
hallow. We too are to be hallowed. Paul urged Timothy
to be a vessel sanctified and useful for God by pursuing
“righteousness, faith, love, [and] peace with those who
call on the Lord out of a pure heart” and by avoiding
“foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife” (2 Tim. 2:21-23).
On this last day of October, children in the US will be
carrying bags filled with sweets. Thinking of them can
remind us to ask: “What is filling the vessel of my life?
Is it a bitter attitude that leads to foolish disputes and
strife, or is it a sweet spirit that leads to righteousness,
faith, love, and peace?”
We can hallow today, and every day, by setting ourselves apart for God to be used by Him.

1/2 C. margarine, melted
PUMPKIN
4 eggs
CAKE
1 lg. can pumpkin
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 C. brown sugar
1/2 C. granulated sugar
1 small can evaporated milk
•Remove one cup of cake mix & set aside. Mix remaining mix with one egg & the melted margarine.
Press into ungreased 9”x13” pan. Mix pumpkin,
3 eggs, cinnamon, brown sugar & milk. Pour over
cake mixture. Mix the 1 cup of cake mix, granulated
sugar & 1/4 cup margarine until crumbly. Sprinkle
on pumpkin. Sprinkle with chopped nuts (if desired).
Bake at 3500 for 1 hour. Good warm or cold.
••• PUMPKIN DESSERT •••
Cream 1/2 C. softened butter and one egg. Add one
box dry yellow cake mix from which one cup mix
has been removed. (set this one cup of mix aside for
topping.) Mix and press in greased 9”x13” pan. Bake
10 minutes, 4000, and remove carefully from oven.
FILLING: Beat 2 eggs. Add 1/2 cup milk, 3/4 cup
white sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 2 cups canned pumpkin. Mix and pour over mixture you have just removed from the oven.
TOPPING: Mix the one cup dry cake mix, 1/4 cup
sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 2 Tbsp. melted butter. Sprinkle over top of mixture in pan. Bake at 3500 for 40-50
minutes. Serve as dessert, cookie bars, or top with
whipped cream if desired.

THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE,
ISN’T IN THE HOUSE

When it comes to sporting events, concerts, or
theatrical productions, everyone seems to want the
best seat in the house. It’s interesting how people’s
perspectives vary, since many prefer the front row
where they are close to the action, while others value
a seat further back so they can see the big picture.
Ticket prices normally reflect how one’s seat at a
venue rates on the best seat in the house scale and
we all know that at a professional sporting event or
on-stage extravaganza, you’re going to pay dearly for
the privilege of sitting in the best seat in the house.
I know that I’m going a little counter-culture on this
subject, but in my opinion, the best seat in the house
isn’t at any scheduled event or watching it on TV
from the comfort of your own home. Rather, the best
seat in the house is somewhere out in the woods:
up in a tree stand, hidden in a ground blind, or sitting quietly in a secluded spot; especially this time
of year. Hunters and wildlife-watchers know the best
seat in the house is anywhere you can escape the
hustle and bustle of everyday life and become part
of the natural surroundings. If patient, you can get
really close to the action and simultaneously, take in
the big picture of what’s going on around you. The
best part is it’s free for those willing to become part
of nature, if only for a brief period.
I love Fall, it’s by far my favorite season! Hunters will tell you that going afield now is the polar
opposite of Spring Turkey Season. In late April and
May, every day brings more vibrant green color to
the woods, thicker vegetation, and further reduced
visibility as each day passes. With the many Fall
hunting seasons, the passing days bring the brilliant red, orange, and yellow colors of the changing
leaves and increasing visibility as the leaves fall and
annual vegetation dies back. During autumn, wildlife
species are extremely active in an ongoing effort to
put on fat reserves in preparation for the rapidly approaching winter with its challenging conditions for
acquiring necessary calories. Finding potential food
sources, such as acorns or wild grapes, or cultivated
crops, like corn, can be the ticket to observing the
most wildlife activity while afield.
Fall has its own distinct sights and sounds that
make it stand out. To the trained eye, there is the
ongoing bird migration as many summer resident
birds depart for more hospitable, warmer climates
and their absence is back-filled by incoming migrants from the Northern U.S. and Canada, who
spend their winters in our area. Additionally, there
are visual reminders that animals are constantly active and moving about in the woods. Buck rubs and
scrapes are clearly evidence of the white-tailed deer’s
presence, while the tell-tale bare earth scratchings
of wild turkeys and the gnawed acorn, hickory nut,
and walnut cuttings from squirrels verify the woods
are a busy place, even though we don’t always see
the inhabitants. Dried leaves and the distinct sound
they make when disturbed by moving and/or feeding animals are one of the most prominent cues that
give away an animal’s position and activity to the patient observer.
In the following weeks, I plan on sharing some
interesting experiences from the ongoing Fall 2015
hunting seasons and a few of my favorite past wildlife encounters that make a spot out-in-the-woods the
best seat in the house, this time of year!
WARNING: It is currently the white-tailed deer’s
breeding season, or the rut, and their activity and
movements will be at its peak for the next several
weeks. Please slow down and remain highly vigilant
for deer crossing the road or highway as you travel.
Now is the time of year when the most deer-vehicle
collisions occur and your heightened caution, while
the deer are doing some stupid things in a hormone

Tips for taking digital photos of your pages.
•No Sleeve: Remove your photo from the
page protector. It will just cause you more issues to deal with: glare, color change, a faded
look, etc.
• Bright Indirect Light: The best lighting to
use is Sunlight. Using sunlight will show your
colors in their true forms. Just make sure to
use indirect light to avoid glare.
• No Flash: Just turn it off. If your phone/
camera is trying to flash then you need to
add more indirect light. Using a flash can
cause horrible glare off of photos and embellishments.
• Line up your shot: If you can, use a “Square”
setting for your shot. Your physical page is a
12”x12”, 12”x8”, 8”x8” etc., page with straight
sides. So you want your digital copy to be that
way as well. The best way to achieve a nice
squared up photo is to lay your page flat on
the ground and stand directly over it. And
again, this is where the indirect lighting is
important to avoid shadows. You can also
prop your photo on a stand vertically to take
the picture, but it can be harder to get your
shot lined up.
•Leave Room: Make sure to leave some
cropping space around your photo. You don’t
want to get too close to your page edges and
then realize something was cut off. So leaving a little buffer space is best because you
can always crop out that background space.
