Notes from the Pastor:
1. Today, Pentecost, is the Birthday of the Church. The Risen Lord, at the right hand of the Father, poured out the
Holy Spirit upon the apostles and they went into the whole world empowered to proclaim the gospel to every
nation. In other words, they were growing disciples who grew other disciples. May all of us pray to be empowered
daily by the Holy Spirit so that we can be growing disciples who grow other disciples. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the
hears of all of us.
2.On behalf of our parish family, I want to “Congratulate” all the children who received their First Holy Communion this year. We
are so proud of all of you. The names of the children who received their First Communion are: Izel Barragan, Vanessa Luise
Brauning, Franco Bettoli, Isla Blue Chambers, Gabrielle Colon, Grace Cook, Samantha Harov, Ava Hyde, Alex Knight, Mallory
Knight, Isaac Thomas Loboda, Ava Gabriella Lodato, Zoe Indira Martin, Mia Ester Mazanowski, Zymunt Jacob Mazanowski V,
John Mitchell, Ilen Paredes, Isabela S. Ramirez, Lucas Sampalo Ramirez, Devon Richardson, David Joseph Seaton, Gabrielle Vega
-Alamo, Cody Michael Whiteside, Hannah Elizabeth Whiteside. I want to thank the parents for all that you also did in preparing
the children. I urge and encourage you to bring your beautiful children to Mass every weekend so that as a family you are able to
continue grow in your beautiful Catholic faith and worship together as a family. I also want to thank Carl and Tricia Longnecker for
preparing the children and families along with thanking Deacon Ben Hooks, the Director of our Religious Education Program.
3. You are invited to join me in making a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land from September 6th—16th, 2016. This blessed pilgrimage
will enable you to visit all the sacred places in the Holy Land. Because of the need for proper reservations and discounted air travel,
the deadline for making reservation will be on June 6. There is an insert in the bulletin this week and there are brochures in the back
of the church or in the parish office. You can also check our website at www.stpatricktampa.org. If you have any questions for me,
call me at 813 839-5337. This pilgrimage is organized by Tekton Ministries in co-operation with the Franciscans in the Holy Land.
All your reservation will be made thru Tekton Ministries. Plan to make this pilgrimage and walk on the same ground that the eternal
Word of God walked on while he was on earth. Invite friends or relatives to make this pilgrimage.
4. I want to thank Chris Yarnold, parent of seminarian Mark Yarnold, for speaking at all the masses this weekend. I also want to
“Thank You” for supporting this 2016 Special Collection for Seminarians which is taking place in all parishes of the Dioceses of St
Petersburg. The theme for the diocesan collection is “Help Us Continue Forming Men of Mercy” which ties into the Extraordinary
Year of Mercy and the overall them of vocations for this year.
5. This weekend we celebrate Pentecost, which is the birthday of the Church. The Holy Spirit empowers us with many gifts. As
we use these gifts, we build the kingdom of God here on earth. We followers of Jesus never stand alone. We have each other to
motivate ourselves toward faithful action. But even more: we always have the Spirit who dwells within and among us and binds us
into one. Through the Holy Spirit we all share in the same risen Life, the same saving mission, the same love. There is strength in
numbers. There is motivation in numbers. Our strength is the gift of the Spirit who binds us in love and unity as the one Body of
Christ. Our motivation is that with the gift of the Holy Spirit we become one with God’s love in a unique way. We become bigger
than ourselves.
In this gospel Jesus reminds us that our love binds us together and to him. Our love motivates us to keep his commandments and
word, the measure of our being together in community. Love is a strong motivator. The strength of our love for Jesus is the
measure of how well we keep his commandments and word, how well we care for each other. Why and how we keep Jesus’
commandments and word is, in the end, keeping him – the divine Word who was sent by the Father. Pentecost is a celebration of
both the gift of the Spirit and the effects of the gift – we are sharers in the one Body of Christ who take up Jesus’ mission to preach
the Good News of salvation.
The Father sent the “Advocate, the Holy Spirit” to teach us “everything.” What is this “everything” we need the Spirit to teach
us? Why and how keeping Jesus’ commandments and word is the unconditional condition of loving him. Why and how this love is
the wellspring of our relationship to Jesus and his Father in their Spirit. What the Spirit teaches us, in the end, is why we do
anything and how we do everything. Oh, how we need Pentecost!
The gift of the Holy Spirit motivates us to live as faithful followers of Jesus who share in his risen Life. This way of living might
be so simple as a reassuring touch or helping hand. It might be so great as making a sacrifice of time to join the parish choir or
volunteering for some task that needs to be done for the good of all. Living the Gospel means that we bask in the good gift of God’s
Life that the Spirit brings. Living the paschal mystery means that this good gift has its cost – we still must die to ourselves in order
to be the true Presence of Christ for others.

As adults, we become so solemn and
even anxious about faith and take
ourselves much too seriously. We
may think we have to be perfect
before God can use us or make a
home in our hearts. Some of us,
according to one bishop, even come
back to confession week after week and confess the same
sins. Today we remember Pentecost, the fiftieth day after
Easter when, as promised, the power of the Holy Spirit
was poured out onto the apostles. This was not just one
historical event reserved for them alone. The Spirit is
poured out continuously for us all. But your heart must
be open to being transformed as the
apostles were.
Take heart from this popular list of the
unlikeliest
characters that the Spirit has transformed for God’s
purposes. Adam was a coward. Noah was a drunk. Sarah
was too old. Isaac was a daydreamer. Jacob was a liar.
Joseph was abused. Moses had a stuttering problem.
Gideon was afraid. Samson was a long-haired
womanizer. Rahab was a “lady of the evening.”
Jeremiah was too young. David had an affair and was a
murderer. Elijah was suicidal. Isaiah preached naked.
Jonah ran from God. Naomi was a widow. Job went
bankrupt. John the Baptist ate bugs. Peter denied
Christ—three times. Martha worried about everything.
Three apostles fell asleep while praying and they all ran
away at the first sign of trouble. Mary Magdalene was
mentally ill. The Samaritan woman was divorced—more
than once. Zaccheus was too small. Paul was too
religious. Timothy had an ulcer and Lazarus was dead!
Living Stewardship Now
God gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help
build up others in a life of faith. Is there some calling
deep in your heart that you are afraid you have no talent
or training for? Pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you to
fulfill the calling and equip you to do it.

I was thanking God for our success this year in Faith
Formation, a success fueled by the wonderful children
and loving parents who bring them. As often happens
after prayer, God led
me to a word that
places it all in perspective – partnership.
Faith
Formation
occurs as a partnership
between the family
from which the child
comes and the believing community in which the child will take his place in
adulthood. Of the two, the family has the greatest
influence. The family is a holy place which according to

is the first place of
community, the first place of love, the first place of
suffering, and the first place of forgiveness. In other
words, it is the place where holiness can come alive and
where relationships can thrive.
Please plan to attend, and volunteer for our Vacation
Bible School – June 20-24, another partnership effort
and opportunity for a supporting relationship.

We thank the parishioners for praying for the RCIA
candidates this past year as their journey led them into
full communion with the Church.
The RCIA journey will begin again in September. We
ask the parishioners to continue to pray for the
ministry. There may be people you know who are
curious about the Catholic faith or interested in joining
