President’s
Message
Spring has arrived and hopefully, the cold
weather in the panhandle has departed.
And, with spring comes the Pensacola
Sectional Tournament, a success as always with superb hospitality
and great bridge. Thanks to Richard Osborn, Tournament Chair;
Sid Kalishman, Partnership Chair; Sarah Ash, Hospitality Chair;
Carolyn Wolf, Cookie Lady baked 157 dozen (1,884.00!) cookies
for Saturday; Karl Miller, a new face in Pensacola as tournament
director; and the many members for a job well-done. Between
sessions on Saturday, the 2013 awards for the Ace of Clubs and MiniMcKenney were presented. Unit 219 winner of the District 9 MiniMcKenney award for the 200-300 masterpoints, Doris Needham,
was recognized. Congratulations to everyone.
In the past, Unit 219’s bidding boxes have been passed from
tournament to tournament in large, very heavy containers
commonly referred to as the purple caskets. The Unit 219 Board of
Directors voted to divide the bidding boxes among the clubs and
purchase an additional number necessary for each club to own a
sufficient quantity to host their tournaments. We thank Unit 219 for
another great gift!
Audree Newman, Tournament Chair, has begun planning the
January 19-25, 2015 Sandestin Regional held as usual on the
beautiful Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Accommodations include
the Le Ciel Hotel and Bayside Villas and reservations may be made
by calling 1-800-320-8115. Make plans to attend this Regional
with refreshments throughout the day, evening hospitality and
cash lunches offered on site, reasonable hotel rates, free parking,
excellent area restaurants plus a visit to the gorgeous Emerald Coast
with lots of gold points and fun.
Until then, we invite you to attend upcoming Unit 219 sectionals
remaining in 2014: Tallahassee, May 2-4; Pensacola, July 11-13;
Tallahassee, August 8-10; Fort Walton Beach, October 3-5; and
Pensacola, November 14-16.
We are saying farewell to a lot of our winter friends. Time really flies
when you are playing bridge. We wish everyone a safe trip home,
and we are looking forward to welcoming you back in the fall.

Panama City Duplicate Bridge Club (PCDBC) held a Membership Meeting on February 10, 2014. Following
the meeting on February 19th, a vote for a new Board of Governors (BOG) was held. Elected are
pictured from left to right: Armand Grassi; Beth McArthur, Secretary; Pam Ramirez, Vice President;
Marvinette Dennis, President; and Martha Moormann, Treasurer.
On March 1st, PCDBC learned of the retirement of Bob Fowler, who had served as Manager for over
30 years. Bob had to move out-of-state to be near family due to health problems. We thank Bob for
his many years of service. The BOG named Armand Grassi as interim manager. On March 14th, with the
recommendation of the BOG, ACBL approved Armand Grassi as Manager of PCDBC. The new Board is
currently updating the 1995 Constitution and Bylaws for the club.
The Panama City Duplicate Bridge Club completed its 4th Annual
Fundraiser for the American Cancer Society contributing $790.00
to this special charity for 2014. Pictured is ACBL Director and
PCDBC Manager, Armand Grassi (R), presenting the check to
Tracy Jones (L), Special Events Coordinator for the City of Lynn
Haven, FL with Lisa Swartwood (L), Lynn Haven Community
Center Operations Secretary and Beth McArthur (R).

On February 14, Pensacola DBC held the Annual Floyd Lemox Heart
Fund Party. Each year the proceeds of this game are donated to the
American Heart Association in loving memory of Floyd (pictured on the
right with his wife, Jean) for his forethought in acquiring the building
we have been playing bridge in for the past 28 years. He loaned the
money to help purchase the building and financially backed the first and only Regional in Pensacola. A
Unit Championship game followed the party with overall winners; Ray Ferree and Bill Sanders in the
open pairs section and Carol Litchenberger and Sue Andrews in the 199er section. Members present
in 1985 when the building was purchased and also playing in this memorial game were: Janet Behrens,
Rod and Kathleen Fullerton, Carol and Gordon Guimond, Carla Hickey and Sid Kalishman.
TDBC recently honored six of its members with a
party recognizing their attaining Life Master status.
The honorees are pictured left to right: Joe Labat,
Bill McCarron, Peggy Moore, Cecil Nichols and
John Obzrut. Not pictured: Bob Ferguson. After
congratulations and presenting awards, the huge
chocolate cake was enjoyed.
Tallahassee Duplicate Bridge Club (TDBC) hosted a
charity game in February supporting efforts to help
Tallahassee’s homeless. Will Boynton and Raphael
Schreiber on the left represented TDBC and delivered
donated items to The Shelter (employees on the
right). Members were very generous! The Shelter was
presented with checks totaling $900, plus a carload of
detergent, paper goods and hygiene supplies -- items
The Shelter requested on their website.
The Director of The Shelter, Jacob Reiten, was most appreciative of TDBC’s donations, and discussed with
members the groundbreaking ceremony for their new facility. In March, Reiten visited a TDBC game and
personally expressed to members his gratitude for the club’s support.
Congratulations to Viza Dirks and Pam Flory for winning the $25 gift cards donated by a TDBC
member. First overall winners in the 16 table game were Marge and Duane Meeter, members of
TDBC for 30 plus years.

The History of Duplicate
Bridge in Fort Walton Beach
By Audree Newman
The Fort Walton Beach (FWB) Duplicate Bridge Club at 100 Buck
Drive has been hosting bridge players since 1993. But, there
was a time when directors had to find other venues to hold
their sanctioned bridge games. Games going back as early
as1963 were held in numerous places around FWB including
Staff’s Restaurant, Eglin Air Force Base, the Jewish Community
Center, FWB Sail and Power Squadron and the FWB Yacht Club.
The Yacht Club would have continued as home base for FWB
Duplicate Bridge, but when the rent was tripled, the director was
forced to find another facility to continue the sanctioned games.
When Jeri Arnold was directing a Friday game at the Power
Squadron, she recalls, “I had to break all their tables (big) down,
put mine up and break mine down when I left. I also had to take
the garbage home ....it was a complete day.” The games at the
Yacht Club and Power Squadron merged at Fort Walton Square,
now known as Uptown Station, where vacant store fronts were
rented out at minimal cost. The challenge for the directors was
that tables had to be moved from one storefront to another as
the space was leased to permanent tenants. Clearly they were
determined to offer sanctioned bridge games in Fort Walton.
Good fortune appeared in the person
of Mrs. Beni Ballmes who, in 1993,
donated the building at 100 Buck Drive.
with the provisos that the existing
$18,000 mortgage will be assumed
and the building will be used exclusively for bridge related
events. The FWB Duplicate Bridge Club was incorporated as a
not-for-profit organization and assumed the mortgage that has
long since been paid off. The FWB bridge playing community
has thoroughly enjoyed the continuing benefits of having a
permanent site for the last 20 years. Following Beni’s passing in
December 2012, our bridge building was officially dedicated as
the Beni Ballmes Memorial Bridge Center.
For all those interested in playing at our bridge club or attending
a tournament in the Fort Walton Beach area, please visit our
web site: fwbdbc.vpweb.com. Games are directed by Jeri
Arnold on Tuesday and Friday and by Jim Jones on Wednesday
and Saturday. The FWB Bridge Club sponsors a fall and winter
sectional tournament except in an odd number year, when the
club foregoes its winter sectional to assist Unit 219 in hosting
the Sandestin Regional. Please join us for our Fall Sectional on
October 3-5 at the Elks Lodge #1795 located across from the
Gulf on the beautiful Choctawhatchee Bay. We look forward to
seeing you!

President's Message
Orlando Metropolitan Bridge Center will celebrate its 25th
Anniversary during a week-long, jammed packed schedule
of special games, raffles, prizes and festivities! The Orlando
Bridge Center opened its doors on May 10th, 1989 and has
continued to operate successfully for 25 years! The celebration
begins Monday, May 5th and ends with a Swiss Team
Championship on Saturday, May 10th. Friday evening promises
a unique “Elegant Pairs” game hoping to make this an annual
event! Players are asked to come elegantly dressed and enjoy
a wine and cheese table during the game. Saturday’s Unit
Sanctioned Championship “8 is Enough” Swiss Team game will
be a packed event too! Reservations are requested for both
events. Programs are available at the Bridge Center. Don’t
miss a moment of it! Congratulations OMBC!
Candace Griffey and I would like to thank everyone for their GREAT
support during our year in office! It’s been a year with some unique
challenges, sleepless nights, and rewarding new friendships! Unit
240 is strong and proud of its accomplishments, its Regional, its
members and Board! Most of our Unit’s Board Members have
volunteered their time and efforts over and over again for many
years! Our combined tenure solidifies the bond and respect for each
other which developed over time. We may be small within the state
but we are MIGHTY in spirit, ability, stature and promise!

Congratulations, again, to our 2013 Top Masterpoint Winners!
In the March issue of Sunshine Bridge News we mistakenly reported the 2012 Mini McKenney and one of the Ace of
Clubs winners. The following reports the accurate winners of both for 2013. Though a little bit tardy we extend our
congratulations to all!
To check your progress in 2014, go to www.acbl.org and click on the link Masterpoint Races, then on Unit Races. You
can look at previous years' final results as well as the current year's status up to the most recent masterpoint run.
Generally, masterpoint runs occur on the 6th of each month.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS
by Paul W. Dennis
Fifteen to seventeen opening one no trump, Jacoby Transfers, Puppet Stayman? Flannery? How high do
you play negative doubles? Odd-even first discards?
These are just some of the questions sure to arise when two duplicate bridge players sit down together
to fill out a convention card. Unfortunately, discussion of bidding and carding agreements usually is
limited to those areas outlined on the ACBL convention card. This leaves unresolved several important
sets of questions.
1.If I open one heart or one spade, how many
high-card points are you promising for the bid
of a new suit at the two level?
a)Do you promise a rebid?
b)What does my 2NT rebid show?
c) If I rebid my suit, am I showing a six card suit?
d)If I raise you to the three level am I
promising extra values?
e)If I bid a new suit at the three level does
this promise extra values or am I simply
bidding my shape?
f) What does a jump rebid of my opening
major suit show? Points? Suit quality? Suit
length?
g)What is the difference between a three
level and four level jump rebid of my suit?
2. What action do you take in balancing auctions
when an opening bid of one of a suit is passed
around to you?
a)What is the range of your re-opening 1NT
bid? Does it show a stopper? What are the
responses?
b)What is the upper limit of a simple overcall
as a reopening bid?
c) What does a reopening jump overcall show?
d)What is the lowest high card total with
which you will re-open?
3.If I open one diamond, you respond one spade
and I rebid two hearts, what am I promising?
a)Is my reverse forcing to game, forcing one
round or non-forcing?
b)How many diamonds am I promising?
54
c) Are my hearts necessarily a real suit?
d)How do you show a bad hand in response
to my rebid?
4.If I open one heart or one spade and the
opponents overcall two of a new suit, what
does your new suit at the two level promise? Is
it forcing? If it is not forcing, how do you show a
good hand?
5. If you open a suit and I respond with one heart
or one spade, will you raise me on three card
support?
a) What kind of hand raises with three card
support?
b) Do you always raise with three card
support?
c) Do we have a method by which I can find
out whether you have raised me on three
or four card support?
6. When holding a balanced hand of 15-17 points
(or whatever range you’ve agreed to play), will
you open 1NT when holding a five card major?
a) Do you always open 1NT or are there
restrictions on when to open 1NT and
when to open the five card major?
b) Does responder have a way to find out
about a concealed five card major?
These questions arise regardless of bidding
system. There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong
answer to any of these questions as long as you
and your partner have some agreement in place.
A thorough discussion of these questions will win
you more match points or IMPs than will the time
you spend discussing conventions.

Message
We hope that our “snow-birds” had a great
winter of bridge and that all will have a
healthy summer and return “earlier” for the
next season. Of course we hope that many will come and visit us
in early December for the Gold Coast’s newest Regional to be held
at the Bonaventure Hotel and Spa. Look for our ads in upcoming
Bridge Bulletins.
We recently held a Unit Wide Championship in memory of Helen
Shanbrom who is missed at many events. Of course the Ace of Clubs
awards were renamed in her honor and we hope that as the awards
were handed out in the local clubs, it will challenge many of you to
vie for this honor this year. Of course this honors the CLUB players, so
please be sure to play many games at your local clubs.
The “common game” has been added at many of our clubs. This
allows a comparison with many of our members who may be
playing at other clubs. It is a great way to see how we have done
against a huge field in perhaps over 170 other bridge clubs, not
"just" the players in our club. Maybe a chance to see if those “snowbirds” are doing as well when they are away!
Enjoy what’s left of Spring and remember when it’s hot outside play
bridge in air-conditioned comfort! All summer…..
