We just want to say
Thanks!
Over the holiday season, we were overwhelmed by
the generosity of our donors and friends who gave
more than $96,000 through our mail appeals with gifts
of all sizes. Funds raised will support the purchase of
patient comfort items and equipment, fund innovative
research and help us respond to the greatest needs of
our Hospital.
Our 2015 Holiday Appeal included a 125th
Anniversary snow globe ornament, commemorating the
Hospital’s 125 year history of serving our community.
Donors were invited to personalize the paper ornament
with warm wishes for patients, staff and caregivers at our
Hospital. We received nearly 250 ornaments with notes
of thanks from our donors and grateful patients.
We wanted to take a moment to say THANKS. Your
support made a difference for the patients, staff and
families spending the Christmas season in our Hospital!
“Merry Christmas from a kidney
transplant patient!”
“Congratulations on your momentous 125
years of operation . Wishing you many
more Christmases in the years to come!”
“Cleaning staff, nurses, orderlies,
doctors, office workers, dieticians
– you are all appreciated!”
“Thank you all for the amazing work
you do. Enjoy the holidays!”
Peace and blessings to all
patients and caregivers during
this Christmas season

Exceptional Care at St. Joe’s
Shirley and Morris Waxman.
…made in honour of the
excellent care that Morris Waxman
received at St. Joseph’s.
Members of the Waxman Family gathered earlier this year
to officially unveil the newly refurbished Morris & Shirley
Waxman Family Visitors’ Lounge in the Cardiac Care Unit and
Medical Step-Down Unit at St. Joseph’s Charlton Campus.
The Visitors’ Lounge was named in recognition of a
donation from the Waxman Family made in honour of the
excellent care that Morris Waxman received at St. Joseph’s.
Morris was a prominent Hamilton businessman known not
only for his contributions to the community, but as a proud
and dedicated family man alongside his wife Shirley. His most
important legacy was his family: daughter Karen, sons Michael
and Douglas, and their wives Teresa and Selina, as well as
eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to helping fund the refurbishment of the
Morris & Shirley Waxman Family Visitors’ Lounge, the
larger part of the Waxman Family’s donation will go toward
supporting the Hospital’s greatest equipment needs.
Through their generosity, the Waxman Family has made
a lasting contribution toward providing a space of comfort
for other families while also supporting hope, healing and
discovery at our Hospital.

has donated $10,000 to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation to support
our Hospital.
Since 1978, The Donnici Social Club has maintained their
cultural traditions and their commitment to giving back to
their community. The $10,000 gift came from funds raised
through the annual John Fortino Memorial Golf Tournament,
which honours the legacy of John Fortino, long-time member
and former President of The Donnici Social Club, and founder of the Fortinos
chain of supermarkets in Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area.
The funds will assist St. Joseph’s with the purchase of life-saving
equipment. From heart monitors to dialysis machines, equipment is essential
for everything we do and this gift will help our Hospital provide patients with
innovative and compassionate care.
Every Around the Bay Fundraiser
has a Story – Meet Kerry
Kerry Turcotte, a Hamiltonian to the core, enjoys living in the North end
where the Bay Race takes place. “I’ve always wanted to run the Around the Bay
and fundraising for St. Joe’s makes sense. It’s a way of saying ‘thank you’ to an
institution that has touched lots of lives in this city, including mine,” says Kerry.

”
How St. Joe’s touched Kerry’s life began in 2004. Pregnant
with her first child, Kerry had the intention of having a home
birth. By Christmas she was almost full-term, but her blood
pressure was concerning. On January 2, 2005 Kerry was
admitted to St. Joe’s with eclampsia and soon after went into
labour.
“By the time my daughter Molly was born the room was
crowded: there were my midwives, the doctor and resident,
and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit team. They were all
amazing and I’m so grateful for their teamwork and the care
we received,” Kerry says. “One of my favourite memories
was when the resident dropped by after to say hello, say how
well I’d done and say how beautiful my daughter was. It was
a small thing, but a kind and compassionate thing that has
stuck with me.”
Though Kerry is a beginner when it comes to running,
she loves the challenge, and she also hopes to surpass her fundraising goal.
“What motivates me is my belief that individuals can make a difference in their
communities,” Kerry adds. “People give to things they feel connected to, so
I hope that by telling my story I can connect with others and in this way I’m
connecting them to St Joe’s.”

Advancing Research in Women’s Health
In May 2015, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation received a $1.5 million dollar gift from Teresa Cascioli’s
namesake foundation to establish the Teresa Cascioli Charitable Foundation Research Award in Women’s
Health. The Award grants up to $100,000 each year to support research studies at St. Joe’s that focus on
all aspects of women’s health from puberty through to post-menopause. Inaugural recipients of the
research award, Dr. Damu Tang and Dr. Benicio Frey, were announced at the Hospital’s annual
Celebrate Research event.
Dr. Damu Tang

Dr. Benicio Frey

Dr. Tang, an Associate Professor of Medicine at
McMaster University and a researcher in the fields of
Nephrology and Oncology at the Research Institute
of St. Joe’s Hamilton, received $100,000 over two
years from the Teresa Cascioli Charitable
Foundation Research Award in Women’s
Health.
Dr. Tang’s research in the area of
breast cancer focuses on the high rate
(75%) of cases that are ER+ (estrogen
receptor –alpha) and are treated with
endocrine therapy. This therapy is
comprised largely of the pharmacological
drug Tamoxifen to which one third of
patients treated develop resistance,
making it ineffective on their tumor.
A study published not long ago by a team that
included Dr. Tang discovered that if a particular
protein (called SIPL1) is suppressed in breast cancer
patients, they are less likely to develop this resistance
to Tamoxifen. With the assistance of this research
funding, Dr. Tang’s team can apply these findings and
contribute to earlier intervention and treatment for
ER+ breast cancer patients.
Dr. Frey was a recipient of the Teresa Cascioli
Charitable Foundation Research Award in Women’s
Health with a one-time grant of $54,000. Dr. Frey
is Associate Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioural
Neurosciences at McMaster University, Academic
Head of the Mood Disorders Program and
Director of the Women’s Health Concerns
Clinic at St. Joseph’s.
The research project led by Dr. Frey
is investigating how disruptions to the
circadian rhythm, the 24-hour cycle of
biological processes that controls mood
and sleep patterns, is linked to mental
illness. The primary focus is on sleep
disturbances during the perinatal period,
the period immediately before and after a
woman gives birth, and increased risk for
postpartum depression (PPD).
With the support of this research award, Dr. Frey
hopes to reveal parameters of circadian rhythms
that can help predict the onset of PPD, as well as
reveal how non-invasive methods can be used as
preventative measures to help new mothers with PPD.

The connection with St. Joe’s, for Gerald and

both born at St. Joe’s. Debbie attended the St.

Today she works in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
