A Great Place to live or visit
Gridley:
Newcomers of all ages are lured to the Gridley area.
The friendly small town atmosphere
is as attractive to young couples
raising a family, as it is to retired
senior citizens. Quality of life is the
primary goal of the community. The
City and community supports a
vibrant recreation program. The area
is also home to some of the best
hunting and fishing.
With current population of 6,526,
Gridley is also a city that has sought
growth in recent years.
Gridley boasts 24 hour police and
fire protection, as well as its own
electrical, water and sewer services.

of Gridley
Gridley was established in 1870,
when the California and Oregon
Railroad was constructed north from
Marysville. The railroad reached Chico
on July 2, 1870.
The town site was named for George
W. Gridley, a wool grower and grain
farmer who at the time, was one of the
three or four largest landowners in
Butte County.
It was located at the place where
Gridley convinced the railroad
company to build a side track he could
use to load his wool and grain on to rail
cars for shipment to market.
Early descriptions of Gridley portray
the town site as situated amid an oak
forest, which extended along the west
side of the Feather River north from the
Marysville-Yuba City area.
A post office was established in
Gridley on Sept. 22, 1870. The first
postmaster was L.C. Stone, who had
built the first home and store in the new
town. He was followed by James Price,
who opened the town’s first saloon, and
W.R. Rogers, who set up a blacksmith
and wagon shop.
On March 1, 1871, Stone was
appointed the railroad’s first station
agent here. Soon after, warehouses
were erected to store grain awaiting
shipment on the railroad.
The town’s first hotel, the St.
Lawrence House, later known as the
Gridley Hotel, was built by John
Mumby and opened on May 2, 1871.
A school district was established for
Gridley in 1873 and the first school
house was built the following year. It
opened on Nov. 2, 1874, with V.P.
Richards as teacher.
A flour mill was established by the
Hamilton Mill Company in 1875. It
began operations about the first of
September. The town’s first brick
buildings were erected in 1877.
The town’s first newspaper, The
Gridley Herald, printed its first edition
on Oct. 29, 1880 and has not missed
publishing an issue since that date.
Like many rural towns that lacked
adequate water systems during their
formative years, Gridley experienced
Discover Gridley ~ 2015
several destructive conflagrations.
A fire department was organized in
1887 and purchased a small hand
pumper. This step was prompted by a
disastrous fire that destroyed the
American Hotel and other businesses.
The department was reorganized in
1891 following two major fires and
bought a used Amoskeag steam
pumper, which was at least 25 years
old.
Gridley’s worst conflagration
occurred the night of July 9, 1905 and
got out of hand because the old steam
pumper malfunctioned. This blaze
destroyed most of the original Stone
Block as well as the Gridley Livery
Stable and several other business
buildings south of Hazel Street between
Virginia and Kentucky Streets.
As a result of this fire, Gridley
residents voted on Nov. 16, 1905 to
incorporate their town as a city in order
to establish a municipal water works
and improve the fire department.
Meanwhile, the burned out district
was quickly rebuilt, the impetus being
provided by the activities of the Butte
County Canal Company, which had
completed its 23 mile long irrigation
canal to Gridley on June 9, 1905, and
the California Irrigation Land
Company, which was subdividing
large, dry-farmed ranches into small
holdings which came to be known as
the Gridley Colonies.
Among the newcomers attracted to
these Colonies, were members of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, who came here from Idaho.
The City of Gridley acquired its own
electric power distribution system in
1910 by buying a home-owned
company that had been furnishing
electricity to the community since
1897.
Gridley Museum
On the Northwest corner of Hazel
and Kentucky Streets in Historic
Downtown Gridley sits the 106 -yearold Veatch Building the home of the
Gridley Museum. Originally this
building was used for the Gridley State
Bank and owned by H.C. Veatch.
The Museum, established in 1999 by
the Gridley Rotary Club, displays
artifacts reminiscent of long ago
Gridley. You will find old photographs,
military collections and a pioneer
family display, just to name a few.
The upstairs portion of the building
has been renovated and the first room
to be displayed is an old-time
physician's office.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by
and get the feel of early Gridley any
Tuesday thru Friday, 10 – 2 PM.
Admission is free, and donations are
gladly accepted.
If you need to know more about
what the Museum offers, come in and
visit with one of the volunteers or make
an appointment with the Museum
Director/Archivist by calling 530-8464482.
Hazel Hotel
Built in 1888, the Hazel Hotel
remains an icon for Gridley’s
downtown, located at the corner of
Hazel and Kentucky Streets.
After years of neglect, the hotel
underwent a massive restoration
project, spearheaded by the City of
Gridley.
Gridley-Biggs Cemetery
The Gridley-Biggs Cemetery is
located on 31 acres at 2023 Highway
99, just north of Gridley. In excess of
13,000 people are buried at the
cemetery, with the oldest tombstone
dating back to 1855.
The cemetery offers an outdoor
chapel for funeral services. The chapel
can hold up to 65 people, and a public
07
address system allows for those in
attendance to hear the services standing
several yards away, or to incorporate
music into the services.
On Memorial Day each year, a very
special service is conducted, with
military representation in attendance,
honoring those who have served and
are currently serving our country.
Military Veterans Court of
Honor
The cemetery features a unique
monument to the men and women who
served in the armed forces. Bricks with
the name, rank and branch of service of
veterans form the Military Veterans
Court of Honor. Eight massive flag
poles are spaced in front of the
memorial wall. The poles hold a flag
for each branch of military service, the
POW/MIA flag, the U.S. flag and the
California State flag.
McCutcheon Monument
At the center of the Military Veterans
Court of Honor is a monument in
remembrance of who may have been
the first U.S. soldier to fall in World
War II.
“The First to Fall” monument is
dedicated to Seaman 2nd Class Warren
H. McCutcheon. Born and raised in the
Gridley-Biggs area, he was killed at the
age of 17 by the Japanese sneak attack
on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941.
Dedicated on May 27, 1996, the
monument was erected by Gridley

Old

Oldest Building In Gridley
Land clearing was going on in the
Gridley area in 1870 when the California
and Oregon Railroad was completed
across the western half of the county. The
immediate result was that new towns
sprang up all along the right of way, each
anxious to provide a stopping point for
the new rail line. George Gridley moved
his huge barn (in which he sheared
sheep and stored the wool) to a spot
adjacent to the new tracks, and the town
of Gridley was built up around it. Gridley
requested the railroad consider building
a station and a community park at the

tracks between Sycamore and Hazel
Streets on the land he had donated for
that purpose. The railroad complied by
building the requested station, with an
area around it reserved as a park. From
that point on, Gridley became a town.
The original depot had been moved in
1903 to the Denny property (later the
Krusick property) at the corner of Ohio
and Laurel streets three blocks south of
the business district until it was relocated in Gridley Municipal Park, now
Vierra Park at the south end of
Washington Street.
