Here's how you make it...
1. Tear off a large strip of tin foil and crumble it into a hook
shape. You can add more foil until you are happy with the
shape and size of your hook.
2. Cut a hole in the bottom of your cup, about the same size
as the bottom of your foil hook.
3. Cut some strips of duct tape and cover the cup around the
hole.
4. Cut 3"-4" lengths of duct tape and cover the rest of the
cup.
5. Once your cup is completely covered insert your foil hook
into the hole in the cup.
6. Tape the foil to the inside of the cup to secure it.

* Instructions for template: The template will open in a new window; close this window when you
are done printing to return to the activity page. You will need Adobe Reader to open the template. If
you do not have it you can download it for free here.
Here's how you make it...
1. Cut out the beard template, trace it onto a piece of beard colored
paper, and cut it out. Cut out a few strips of the same colored paper. We
made our strips about ¼" wide.
2. Cut a piece of string long enough to fit around the child's head. Glue
the center of the string onto the beard.
3. Cut your strips into 1-1½" lengths. Wrap each strip around a pencil to curl it (this is
technically called "quilling").
4. On the front of the beard (the string is at the back) begin gluing your
"hair" all over the beard. Hint: It's easier if you start at the bottom and
work to the top of the beard. You're done your Homemade Beard!

* Instructions for template: The template will open in a new window; close this window when you
are done printing to return to the activity page. You will need Adobe Reader to open the template. If
you do not have it you can download it for free here.
Here's how you make it...
1. Unfold your large piece of newspaper completely.
2. The amount you cut (or don't cut) from your newspaper will determine
the size of your hat. We cut ¼ of the newspaper off so that it would fit a
3 year old. This size will most likely work best for 3-6 year olds. For older
children you don't have to cut any off at all.
3. Fold your newspaper in half.
4. Fold both outer corners down, meeting in the middle.
5. Put a couple of pieces of scotch tape on each triangle.
6. You'll notice that there are two pieces of newspaper at the bottom of
the hat. Take one piece and fold it up, secure with tape if you want; then
turn the hat over and fold the other paper up.
7. Cut out the Jolly Roger from the center of the paper (keep the scraps,
you'll be using them in the next step). Use the template as a stencil:
Place the paper over top of the center of your hat and brush paint over
top. Remove the paper and you'll have your Jolly Roger printed on your
top. Remove the paper and you'll have your Jolly Roger printed on your
hat. Younger children will find the paint easier, older children can use a
marker in the stencil. Note: You will need to print the Jolly Roger Stencil
on heavy paper if you want to use it for more than one hat.
8. Cut out the eyes and nose from the cut out stencil and glue them in
place, and you're all done your Newspaper Pirate Hat!
