onfirmation is a rite of the Church by which persons baptized in infancy confirm their baptismal
covenant by making a public profession of faith in Jesus and then receive the blessing of the Lord.
The rite of confirmation was practiced in the ancient Unitas Fratrum. In the renewed Unitas
Fratrum it was used for a candidate prior to the Lord’s Supper on the Thirteenth of August 1727, but it did
not come into general use in the Moravian Church until about 1751.
Candidates for confirmation are carefully instructed by the minister in the doctrines of Christian
faith. They examine their personal faith in Christ and their desire to become faithful members of the
congregation.
In the Moravian Church a deacon, presbyter, or bishop may officiate at the service of confirmation.
Certain questions (found on pages 170 and 171 in the Book of Worship) are addressed to the candidates
and are answered by them. Then the candidates kneel, the minister lays hands on their head, recites a text
selected as a watchword for each candidate, and pronounces the Old Testament benediction, which in the
Moravian Church is always closed with the addition of the New Testament phrase “In the name of Jesus.
Amen!”1
On May 31 we will celebrate the rite of confirmation at First Moravian Church of Georgia. There
are several young people who have been in study and preparation this year. Confirmation is an important
part of a young person’s Christian journey. We hope that you will make it a priority to join us on this day
as we celebrate with and encourage our young people.
