October 11th: Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners,
Many of our Mexican, as well as non-Mexican, parishioners have enjoyed the occasions when
Mass here has been accompanied by a Mariachi Band (Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe; World Marriage Day; some Quinceañeras, etc.).
Members of the Mexican-American community are concerned that this animated musical culture not be lost, but transmitted to the next generation in the USA. This is the goal of the Mariachi
Academy of New York, which is currently operating out of St. Paul’s Church in East Harlem, but is
branching out to one or two other sites, including St. Raphael’s, in an attempt to be closer to the
Brooklyn and Queens homes of many of its 200 students.
The students range in age from 4 to 18 years and receive instruction in music theory, as well
as professional, hands-on training in various Mariachi instruments (guitar, violin, trumpet, etc.). The
students must provide their own instrument, book and Mariachi shirt, but only pay a $50 registration
fee for the whole term. This is not only a great opportunity, but also a terrific deal.
We will begin hosting the program here in November, on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 8
pm. The rectory basement and Michael Brennan Hall (with its classrooms) will be utilized.
We’ll hold registration towards the end of October, and will be providing more details here, in
English and Spanish, in the next few weeks. The training takes place in Spanish, although some English accommodation is afforded to children whose Spanish is less than fluent.
I give you this heads-up now, because space will be limited. Spread the word to those with
children who might benefit from this initiative.
Speaking of our Mexican community, the dates of their three Fall KERMESES here have been
set. The KERMES is a food fair, with fresh, delectable edibles available after Sunday Masses. You
buy some strip tickets, and use the appropriate number to purchase what you want for brunch or
lunch. The KERMESES are the funding source for the Mariachi Band that will accompany our Guadalupe Mass in December.
The KERMESES here will be on Sundays, Oct. 18 (next Sunday)!, Nov. 8 and Nov. 22. Save
the dates and come to enjoy the delicacies.

Dear St. Raphael Church parishioners,
Over the past several months, we invited St. Raphael parishioners to join thousands of Catholics across the Diocese of Brooklyn to be a part of Generations of
Faith. After a tremendous response from our parish family, we are concluding our active solicitation phase of the campaign. We continue to receive pledges daily and are
truly overwhelmed by the generosity of our parishioners here at St. Raphael. I am
truly humbled by the sacrificial commitment from the families who have pledged more
than $ 761,000 to this important endeavor.
We reflect in gratitude on the sacrifices of those who have gone before us, the
clergy who have dedicated their lives to serving our faith communities, and eagerly
look to the future as the exciting youth evangelization project unfolds before us.
Generations of Faith has offered us the opportunity to strengthen our parish for
future generations of Catholics, and has reinvigorated us with a sense of renewed
community and stewardship. I am grateful for your vision and your commitment to
maintaining our parish as a beacon of faith for others. Thank you for your support and
prayers through this endeavor.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Jerry Jecewiz

Padre Jerry Jecewiz

ABOVE: On his way back from the Philadelphia Meeting of Families, Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-Kil,
head of the Daegu Archdiocese in South Korea, stopped at St. Raphael Church in Long Island City to celebrate Mass with the members of the Korean Martyrs Apostolate there on the parish’s patronal feast of St.
Raphael (Sept. 29th). He is shown (left) with Father Luke and Father Jerry, pastor of St. Raphael’s, and
also (right) in a group photo with Apostolate members, who will be celebrating their 25th year of existence
in our Diocese in 2016.
JOIN THE FAMILY MASS CHOIR...
We are ready to start a new year for St. Raphael’s Family Mass Choir and we need your talents.
The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and
have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael’s parish. Children in grades 2 and
above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be interested in having any high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday’s a month at
7:00PM and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve, First Communion
Mass, Confirmation and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow.
The only requirements are that you attend practice and Mass and behave appropriately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist in the singing, who may play a musical instrument or
who are willing to help with other support functions, such as transportation. If you are interested please
fill out this form and return it to the parish rectory, to Sister Christine at the Religious Education Program, Joe Becker or Jan Wnek after Mass. If you have any questions regarding the choir please feel
free to call the rectory or call Joe Becker at 718-392-3008 or email Joe at [email protected].
I am interested in being a part of St. Raphael’s Family Mass Choir
