The LA FOLLE JOURNEE au JAPON season will soon arrive. From its beginning in
Nantes, Bilbao, and Lisbon the season continues in Tokyo. Recently, Ms. Eriko
Nakamura visited Nantes. Her parents manage “Ginza Jujiya”, a musical
instrument store, but Ms. Nakamura told me that she had never positively
enjoyed classical music. Yet during her Nantes experience, she became
completely enthralled with classical music.
*Jujiya Hall is holding “A day of enthusiasm” participation concerts from April 24 (Sun) ‾ 28

After graduation from Rikkyo University, Ms.
Nakamura joined Fuji Television Network, Inc. At Fuji
Television, she was in charge of such TV programs
as “Do-natteruno?” and “Cult Q” as a broadcaster.
After leaving Fuji Television in 1999, she became a
freelance broadcaster. Until now, Ms. Nakamura has
been involved in program narration, etc. Recently,
she moved to Paris. Kodansha Ltd. published her
book “Eriko Royal.”

people will hear outstanding music in any hall, any passage, and any plaza.”- Rene Martin,
the artistic director of LA FOLLE JOURNEE au JAPON discussed his goal when he first came to
the Tokyo International Forum. The cover page illustration reflects the image of the Tokyo
International Forum, a transformation to an island of musical excellence. Mr. Jiri Votruba, an
international painter, illustrator and graphic designer based in Prague, illustrated the cover.
His artistic work is varied and includes a football team logo and the official poster of the
Czech Republic Building for EXPO 2005 AICHI. His graphics in the Mozart Museum in Salzburg
and the classical music-related works such as the musicians’ portraits reflect his passion for
music.
In the near future, the Tokyo International Forum will become “an island of music.”

Like the Theme Park of classical music
What I noticed first was a large, free of charge concert hall overflowing with a great number
of people. When I saw the casually dressed audience enjoying the music, I too became
relaxed, realizing that such a classical concert could also be a festival. The atmosphere was
indeed amazing.
Those who perform embraced such a casual atmosphere. They understand Rene Martin’s
claim that listening in a very formal way is not the only way to hear classical music. As the
result of their understanding, the performers can concentrate on their performances, and
the entire hall keenly appreciates the difference. In this way, all people in the hall can be
excited.
The situation was not people being rude to performers during a festival. People simply
moved about in the performance space where music could be heard free of charge. The
space was also a passage and people moved freely in and out. In other festival halls, people
behaved casually but in an appropriate way: lining up, waiting their turns, listening quietly to
performances. When the performances ended, the musicians received generous, ardent
applause. I was so impressed.
It is good that a performance time is short, 45 minutes. A performance ends when the
audience still wants to listen a little more…such an afterglow makes us feel like going
another performance.
Choosing which performances I wanted to attend from the concert schedule table is the
same happiness I get in a Theme Park. Just like wanting to enjoy all the attractions, I am
truly happy planning my concert schedule, so I will be able to enjoy as many concert events
as possible during the limited festival time.
Performers and audiences amplify and extend their enjoyment of each other
Normally, it is difficult for audiences to go backstage after a performance to express directly
to performers how they were impressed with a performance. But in LA FOLLE JOURNEE, we
may be able to see concert performers heard earlier walking by us with musical instruments
in their hands.
When I happened to be with Momo Kodama, a pianist, an older French couple said to her,
“Momo Kodama? We were impressed at your performance, and we became your fans. We will
listen to your performance tomorrow again.” I thought this a grand incident. Performers
must be delighted to hear such direct messages.
The energy of the audience was transmitted to the performers, and the performers’ energy
was transmitted back to the audience… The positive feelings were continuously amplified. I
felt this situation was a unique experience.
When I came back from Nantes, I was totally enthralled with classical music. Listening to
classical music at home became normal. Plus, my daughter happily listens, swaying to the
music in front of the speakers.
Expectation Toward LA FOLLE JOURNEE au Japan
I visited LA FOLLE JOURNEE for magazine coverage*.
While covering the story, some local people in
Nantes spoke to me, saying, “This festival is going
to be held in Japan, isn’t it?” I said, “Yes.” And
people were glad to hear that and thanked me.
Also in the performance halls, a woman sitting in
front of me, looked back at me and kindly said,
“Are you Japanese? We appreciate your visit here.
Thank you.” I was totally impressed that people in
Nantes not involved in festival planning would say
that they were glad to see Japanese people
coming to Nantes.
Another person said, “This is being held in Japan, isn’t it?” pointing at a festival poster. She
added, “Thank you, I’m so glad.” Though I am not a promoter, I felt emotional listening to
her.
I think that Nantes people feel proud that the festival, born in their own town, will be held
over the world, especially in Tokyo. They seem to have a feeling that “It is a good thing that
such a great event like this extends out into the world, and we thank you accepting our
great event.”
As a Japanese person, such a message from people in Nantes made me feel glad. I hope
this year’s Tokyo festival will become successful, and I hope it will be held every year.
Child-friendly classical music
Though it may be normal for people in Nantes, I was surprised that many groups of preschoolers came to the festival. In Nantes, children, listened quietly to the performances. In
Japan, it is difficult for us to go to a classical music concert with children.
I have a small child, so I was impressed that there were many people in Nantes wheeling
baby carriages at the festival. Such people may not be able to enter a large concert hall,
but they can enjoy a free performance in some halls. There, they can leave if their babies
start crying. I felt that I could mimic their behavior because seeing such people with babies
encouraged me to include my daughter.
As children have more sensitive ears than adults, it is very important for them to experience
live performances. I feel that when I see my daughter enjoying a musical experience. Her
entire body moves to the rhythm of the music she hears.
Tokyo International Forum is located in an especially convenient location in Tokyo. We can
go to see a movie or shop between concerts ? it seems nice for us to hear classical music in
such a casual, relaxed atmosphere.
People, who rarely go to a classical music concert, visit Ginza and may happen to listen to
the concert. It’s an ideal situation, isn’t it?
TIF is located in a place where all people from children to adults will enjoy. You can go to a
cafe in Marunouchi, or spend your time in Ginza and return to TIF again. In this respect,
Tokyo has merits that Nantes does not have. Plus, the festival in Tokyo is being held during
the warm season, a better time of year compared to winter when the festival was held in
Nantes.
I am looking forward to LA FOLLE JOURNEE, and I hope that many people will participate in the

written by Goro Matsui who created various hit tunes for Anzen Chitai. The coupling tune
“Namae-no-nai Sora-wo Miagete” (Looking at the sky with no name”) is a self-cover tune
which was originally created by Tamaki for MISIA, and amazingly, MISIA is joining in as a
chorus member. The tour this time will cover new tunes to past hit tunes together with new
supportive members. The stage performance of Tamaki, who has a rare talent as a vocalist

People Gathered in the Forum for Lunch Time at “Neo Food Stand Village”

In the “Neo Food Stand Village,” pretty catering cars got together and various menus at
reasonable prices from all over the world are presented. It has become the face of the lunch
time of the forum after opening the “village” on the ground square. Let’s have lunch in a
picnic mood in the spring sunshine!
During “La Folle Journee,” more than a dozen food stands got together from 10:00 to 22:00.

Aiming toward Making More Friendly Facilities.
Since privatization in July 2003, the Tokyo International Forum has been implementing
various projects, aiming for more understandable and friendly facilities for visitors. As part of
this goal, the General Information Booth was renewed and lighting poles in the glass wing
lobby were newly installed. The face of the forum was newly reborn.
Visual identity of the forum was adopted in the General Information Booth.
Information inside/outside the forum is provided at the General Information Booth. The
Forum Concierge, offering guidance, responds to more than 300 inquiries everyday.
The forum’s visual identity was adopted in the renewal. You can see that it is the General
Information Booth at a glance, and at the same time, the glass wing, the main lobby of the
whole forum has become more activated. In addition, at the Yurakucho side of the glass
wing, a permanent concierge counter was newly constructed. More friendly guiding has
become available to visitors.
The forum visual identity has been deployed by various items after the privatization, which
represents the appearance of performing harmony full of lively joy, gathering various people,
information and cultures at the forum regardless of nationality, age and gender.
Up to this point, the “Forum Food Court” where people can relax eating delicious food has
been introduced. To the relaxing space, live concerts such as “Club Classics” and a preview
corner of “La Folle Journee” was added. Cafe and restaurants with music appeared where
you can eat, drink and chat while enjoying classical music.
8 lighting poles were installed in the lobby of the glass wing.
The giant ship-shaped glass wing is characterized
by a dynamic vaulted ceiling, 60 meters high.
Natural sunlight pours through it magnificently
during the daytime. The lobby has been more
utilized for salon concerts during the evening, and
by installing 7 lighting poles, visitors can stay
there comfortably in a soft light.
Guiding signs were installed at each escalator. We
sought to provide further convenience and easier
access. The Tokyo International Forum will bolster
our efforts in regard to making these lively
facilities more friendly to visitors.

New restaurant will be opened in the
forum. “Fresco Gioventu Sabatini”
“Fresco Gioventu Sabatini” is an Italian
delicatessen and cafe originated from “Sabatini.”
The restaurant was born in order to allow forum
visitors to casually enjoy the Roman taste and
Italian food culture which has been kept by the
Roman Italian established restaurant, “Sabatini”
since its Aoyama restaurant was opened 24 years
ago.
You can start the day by having fresh bread and
flavory originally roasted espresso in the morning.
For lunch, you can select a boxed lunch from a
wide variety. You can also enjoy various types of
Italian wine by the glass, and it is perfect for an
after five date. Needless to say, you can order
takeout, you can eat in the restaurant and there
is also a cafe where you can sit and relax. From a
cup of coffee to casual dinner, enjoyment is
provided according to your life style.

Safety is the best service. We prepared a “BarrierFree Guide.”
At the Tokyo International Forum, various barrier-free facilities
are available, such as elevators exclusively for wheelchairs,
guiding blocks for visually-impaired people and supporting
facilities for hearing-impaired people.
In order to let people more effectively utilize these facilities,
we prepared a map pamphlet, “Barrier-Free Guide.” It was
designed in a style which enables you to see what is where
and for how many at a glance. We are making great efforts in
order to create the safest and most comfortable facility in
Japan.
The guide is available at various locations in the hall and at the General
Information Booth.

Claude Viallat
Southern France is a region drenched in sunlight
and very colorful. Above all, Nimes is a beautiful
town. The town, which is the origin of the name of
the fabric, denim, is historically famous for fabric.
The old times and today are mixed. At the side of an
ancient Roman site, there is a square-shaped glasswalled modern museum. At the sea side, there is a
place which is close to a primitive stratum.
The artist who lives in this town and who represents
southern France is Viallat. At the ancient Roman
field, endemic bullfighting in southern France is
performed even today, and in a vast sunflower firm
and yellow of petal, dark brown of the large circle
and green of leaves are forming in lines. The roof of
a house in the color of the loquat fruit is in cinnabar
like the surface of unglazed ware. Traditional shirts
in potpourri pattern. Flower and trees in the park
where there is a fountain.
In the works of Viallat, which decorates the Tokyo International Forum, it seems all of these
things are fully made use of. It is very colorful. When I visited Viallat’s home in Nimes, his wife
Enrietta prepared a good lunch made of minced cod. His own work was put on the wall. It
was as if the house is full of the joy of living.
Red edging of the painting looking like lined-up broad beans and splashes of paints are
livening the canvas. It is his style not to frame his work as he wants to show the canvas as
fabric.
In this way, Viallat is excellent in painting theory. Theoretical Viallat has been holding many
large exhibitions in Paris. After knowing the joy of living in his hometown, he does not devote
himself only to theory. When you speak of the joy of living, it reminds me of the mellowness
of Matisse. Viallat’s painting is originated from Matisse of southern France.
What does his pattern painting, looking like lined-up broad beans, represent? He has tried
various things: making knots in straw-rope, drawing simple figures on stones and driftwood
and making a handprint with a lot of pigment on his hand. It is a theory that the tracing that
human beings tried first, impulsively, has led to art.
The shape of repetitive simple patterns is a primitive impulse of human beings, and it is easy
to remember and keep in your memory as it leads to modern semasiology. Isn’t this what
Viallat wants to appeal to people?
Was it coincidental that potpourri-packed bags reminded me of Viallat’s painting? I thought
along these lines while drinking espresso in the town where ancient memory and modern
times are mixed.
