Biography : Maureen “Moe” Shea
Maureen “Moe” Shea, the current North American Boxing Federation (NABF) featherweight
Champion and President of the North Bergen, NJ-based Global Boxing Gym was born and
raised in the Bronx, New York. Born January 11, 1981, she was raised by a strict Irish father,
a now retired NYPD Detective. Maureen’s mother, of Mexican heritage, worked in the airline
industry and this afforded ample travel to Maureen. Moe spent much of her youth growing
up in the Bronx and in the Guadalajara area of Mexico, and is fluent in Spanish.
In the amateurs, Maureen was known and respected for her boxing. First training out of
NYBG with Luigi Olcese, she was eventually brought to Gleason’s to train with the legendary
Hector Roca. Her growth evolved over time and was necessary preparation for the game
ofprofessional boxing. In 2004, when Hilary Swank came looking for Hector Roca to help
her get ready for the movie Million Dollar Baby, Roca paired Swank with Maureen Shea.
Maureen was Hilary’s main sparring partner in preparation for Swank’s award winning role
in the movie. When the international media learned that Swank attended all of Maureen’s
amateur bouts, Maureen was thrust into the spotlight. It was Maureen’s boxing, however,
that captured the attention. Now, still with the same team that brought her start in the amateur
game, Maureen Shea has stepped up to the challenge of professional boxing and made
and won her debut, August 26, 2005.
As a professional, Maureen is 15-2 with 9 KO, and well ranked in the top sanctioning bodies
in women’s boxing. Her boxing skills were also exhibited in the corner, when she filmed an
episode of MTV’s “Made” in which she coached and mentored a young ballerina, Whitley,
to become a boxer.
Away from the ring, Maureen is a senior at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York,
pursuing a BA in English with a minor in speech.
