PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Parents and Carers,
OUR SECOND SUCCESSFUL MUSIC CAMP
I had the good fortune to spend some time at our
Community of Schools Music Camp last week. It
was an invaluable experience. Three days, 57
students from 4 schools. The talent, the
opportunities, the incredible improvement with
amazing repertoire, from Brahms to Cold Play;
our 12 campers experienced it all. A delightful
experience and one I encourage students from
Year 4 to Year 6 to consider for 2017.

WHAT MAKES US NUMBER 1?
by being a banking volunteer. Many hands make
light work!
Have a wonderful week everyone.

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION 2016
In the student banking area, Strathfield South
Public School is number 1. WHY? Well, of course
it is because our students (with parent support)
bank a small amount of money each week. But
this school service would not be possible without
the incredible dedication of a small band of
parents and prior parents, who offer their
voluntary services every Tuesday. I wish to thank
them for the time they give (sometimes an hours
or two, occasionally a full day), enabling a rising
of financial awareness for our students and a
further service to our families our school can offer.
Sadly, in many schools this service does not
exist. Thanks must go to Anastasia Kalestsis,
Mary Thevaranjan, Mekala Rajmohan, Kirija
Amalan, Lusiana Rima, Melody McGrath, Kathryn
Howarth, Nichola Beukes, Leena Chakma and
Lisa Kovac (coordinator). Please contact Lisa, or
our office, if you would like to support our school
“Think of Others”
Congratulations to all the students who put a
wonderful effort into their speeches and special
congratulations to the students who made Grade
Finalists.
On Friday 27 May, the Grade Finalists will present
their speeches to an audience of parents/carers
and some classes, with trophies awarded for the
winners.
This will take place in the school hall and
invitations have been given out to parents/carers
to attend.
Primary: 9:10am
K - 2: 11:20am
Thank you to all the parents/carers and teachers
that helped prepare students to practise and
present their speeches.
Ms Giamboi, Ms Gainsford, Ms Kennedy, Ms
Tsailis.

Please meet in the School Library. All interested
parents are welcome to walk through the plans
and imagine them in the space.
NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION
OF DATA
All schools in Australia participate in the
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on
School Students with Disability. The national data
collection is an annual collection that counts the
number of school students with a disability and
the level of reasonable educational adjustments
they are provided with. This information is useful
to best help students with disabilities to take part
in all aspects of school. Please read the attached
leaflet for more information.

SCHOOL BANKING
Please remember that every TUESDAY is our
student banking day.
School Banking is
a fun, interactive
and engaging way
for young children
to learn about
money and
develop good
savings habits. We would like to highlight that it’s
a great fundraising activity, where the school
receives 5% of every individual deposit made at
school (up to $10 commission per individual
deposit), along with other benefits.
For parents, the Commonwealth Bank have some
great tips, advice and fun downloads through ‘The
Beanstalk’, to help you bring money to life for your
children. There’s a fabulous article about ‘Learning
more about your child’s Common Cents’ where the
Commonwealth Bank recently quizzed some Aussie
kids about the ways in which children understand
money management. Should you wish to get a
better understanding of your child’s ability, your
child too can take the online quiz. Please visit
www.commbank.com.au/personal/can/teachingkids-about-money where you will be able to
access the quiz and more.
For anyone interested in opening a Dollarmites
YouthSaver account, Parent Information Packs
are still available from the school’s office. Please
refer to the back of the enclosed letter in the
Information Pack on how to arrange this.
We’re almost half way through Term 2, so please
don’t forget that you could be in the running to win
your family a wildlife adventure holiday to explore
Page 3
Australia Zoo and to meet Bindi and Robert Irwin.
All you need to do is make 15 School Banking
deposits by the end of TERM 3 2016 to receive
an automatic entry for your chance to win this
amazing adventure holiday. Find out more at
www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking .
Remember your Outback Adventure is
awaiting you, so keep your boots on and let’s
continue on our wild adventure through the
Canyon of Savings.

OPAL CARD – STUDENT TRAVEL
It is a condition of use that students tap on and
tap off at the start and at the end of each trip with
their Student Opal Card. This is important to
ensure correct patronage data is recorded, which
is used to plan school special and regular route
bus services. This data helps State Transit ensure
adequate capacity is provided, so students can
travel to and from school safely.
Currently, many students are failing to tap on or
off the Opal readers when using their Student
Opal Card.

BYOD NEWS!
We are off and racing with our 11 BYOD iPad
classes! We have begun integrating Google
Classroom and found it a useful tool for creating,
collaborating and reflection on their learning and
the learning of others. Most classes have started
using Spelling City as a component of their
spelling programs. With individual learning lists
students can work at their own pace on a range of
challenges covering specific vocabulary, spelling,
writing, and sound-letter correspondence and
building phonological and phonics skills.
Parent BYOD Information Sessions
This term we would like to hold sessions with
parents to share some of the opportunities and
experiences students are having with their
devices and gather constructive feedback about
how parents feel the program is going so far.
The first session dates are the
afternoon/evening of Thursday 2 June and
possibly the morning of Tuesday 21 June.
Please share YOUR preferences in attending by

Notable BYOD Developments
Heavy Bags!
We are all aware that our SSPS students have
big strong minds, however, their bodies are still
growing and we would like to thank parents for
the feedback we received lately regarding this
issue. We have taken on board the comments
regarding the weight of students’ school bags
becoming a burden with the inclusion of iPad’s,
library books, delicious healthy lunches, multiple
pencil cases, homework books and possibly the
kitchen sink!
With this in mind please consider the following
options;
-
On library days have students carry their
library bag separately from their school bag
Check your students are only bringing in their
homework on its set day of collection
Page 5
-
-
-
Politely ask if there is a space within the
classroom for heavier keyboard cases or
headphones that may not be required at home
to complete homework
Purchase a roller bag for your child to use,
though not yet available in our school bag
colours we will make gains towards this in the
future.
Bring an empty water bottle and fill at school
Storage Options in Classrooms
Lockable cabinets have arrived and are being
installed to assist classes that do not have a
dedicated storeroom to lock devices during break
times, scripture or community languages when
the classroom teacher is no longer supervising
the students directly. We feel this will enable
more smooth transitions between classes and will
heighten our already successful security
measures.

MESSAGE TO PARENTS/CARERS
Keep Kids Safe: #parentscheckthecheck!
Parents or carers who engage the services of
a private tutor or coach have an important
role to play in helping to keep their children
safe.
From 1st April 2016 adults who provide
private tuition or coaching services to children
will need to obtain a new Working With
Children Check.
School Uniforms
SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY
School uniform is compulsory at Strathfield
South Public School.
ALL UNIFORM ITEMS MUST BE CLEARLY
MARKED WITH THE NAME OF THE
STUDENT.
Unclaimed un-named items are recycled via
the Clothing Pool at the Uniform shop.
“Think of Others”
The Certificate for Self Employed People will
no longer be valid after their expiry date and
the certificate holders will need to apply for a
new Working With Children Check.
Parents or carers should ask their child’s tutor
or coach for their name, date of birth and their
Working With Children Check number.
They must then go online and verify the tutor
or coach is not barred from working with
children in NSW.
Page 6
Verifying that a tutor or coach can work with
children is quick and easy – just follow the
simple steps at
www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/parentscheckt
hecheck
If you suspect that an adult is providing
services to children without a Working With
Children Check you can go online to make a
confidential report or phone (02) 9286 7219.
Help to keep kids safe by sharing
#parentscheckthecheck with your family
and friends through your own social media
networks.
National Simultaneous
Story Time 2016
NSS receives positive media coverage,
generates a great deal of community interest
and is held annually as part of Library and
Information Week.
I GOT THIS HAT:
I got this hat in China. I got this hat from a
miner. I got this hat from a deep-sea diver.
I got this hat from a racing-car
driver….Hats. Only the headless dislike
them. Everyone else loves waring them!
In this fun title we take a peek at the world
around us through the playful medium of
hats.
National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual
campaign that aims to encourage more young
Australian to read and enjoy books. Now in its
16th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun
event that aims to promote the value of reading
and literacy, using an Australian children’s book
that explores age-appropriate themes, and
addresses key learning areas of the National
Curriculum for Kindergarten – Year 6 and the
pre-school Early Learning Years Framework.
National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually
by the Australian Library and Information
Association. Every year a picture book, written
and illustrated by an Australian author and
illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries,
schools, pre-schools, childcare centre, family
homes bookshops and many other places around
the country.
By facilitating National Simultaneous Storytime,
we aim to:
-
-
Promote the value of reading and literacy;
Promote the value and fun of books;
Promote an Australian writer and
publisher;
Promote storytime activities in public
libraries and communities around the
country;
Provide opportunities to involve parents,
grandparents, the media and others to
participate in and enjoy the occasion.
“Think of Others”
To participate, Kindergarten - Year 6 students
may like to bring a Hat from home to wear at
the Wednesday morning assembly to
celebrate this event.

SSPS Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea
Thursday 9th June 2016 at 11am
We will have a cake stall for the children to buy cake for morning tea.
Most cakes/cupcakes will be $2, so please send a gold coin donation with
your children to school so that they can enjoy the morning tea.
Parents and grandparents are welcome to come to school on this day and have morning tea with your children.
Buy a coffee or tea and a piece of cake. Sit and chat with other parents, while raising money to help excellent work
done by the Cancer Council.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Any cake that can be served as an individual cake (cupcakes or muffins) or can be cut easily into
pieces would be great. The more cakes we get, the better the morning tea will be.
If you are making food suitable for children with allergies, please send a note listing the ingredients
with the food.
Cakes can be brought to the staff room on Thursday morning at 9am.
If you can help, please contact Meera 0414 440 381 OR Kerry 0408 119 187
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
If you are unable to come to the morning tea, but would like to donate money to the Cancer Council, you
can do this by simply sending cash or cheque payable to NSW Cancer Council to the school office in an
envelope marked ‘Cancer Council Morning Tea’. If you would like a receipt (all donations over $2 are tax
deductible), please include a note in the envelope with your name, address, telephone number and child’s
name/class.
