Serving the needs of
our diverse Jewish
community for more
than 120 years.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
JONATHAN COHEN
President
“If you don't’ know where you are going, any road will take you there.”
These words are attributed to “Anonymous.” No idea who he or she was, or when
this phrase came into being. It’s not clear who said this first, or if it’s even in it’s original form. But I think alot about these
words, pretty much every day. They accompany the signature line in my business emails, and I think explain very clearly my
interest with PBJC’s strategic plan.
We are the caretakers of some wonderful gifts from Hashem – a gorgeous building, a healthy Jewish community that affords
us countless opportunities to connect and to learn, and we each are blessed to be surrounded by the many friends and
families we share these gifts with. I have spoken a great deal in the past months about strategic planning and lead with the
topic his month. In a nutshell, the strategic plan is about caring for these gifts. We have established a mission statement for
PBJC that we should all feel very good about:
“to offer a warm and welcoming environment that appeals to a diverse congregation with varying levels of observance,
increasing each congregants connection to the community, the Synagogue and Judaism”
We are aligning all PBJC planning around this mission, and have further identified three key imperatives the details of the
strategic plan will be organized around:
1. Member retention
2. Attracting new members
3. Long-term financial sustainability
Under the leadership of Dan Seewald and Michael Weinstein, we will be conducting facilitated workshops beginning in March.
Input from all of our member segments is critical, and we wish to afford all an opportunity to discuss these imperatives. The
Strategic Planning Committee will then organize this congregational feedback and the Chevra will determine how best to
prioritize around these imperatives. All congregants will be contacted about the times and dates of their sessions, and I ask all
to make the time to help contribute to this critical project we all benefit from.
While we plan for our future, we also celebrate the richness of our traditions and PBJC’s glorious past. As I write this, it is
expected to hit 70 degrees tomorrow – spring is in the air! And of course that means Passover is right around the corner. We
will celebrate what has become an annual tradition at PBJC – a second night Sedar on Saturday, April 23rd. Every year, this
event adds participants, and we look forward to making this year’s Sedar the best ever. My thanks to Estelle Stein for taking
organizing this on while I am otherwise occupied.
Lastly, PBJC’s 120th anniversary gala on May 14th is right around the corner. Every one of us should be committed to joining
in the celebration of this important milestone. The Gala committee is working feverishly to make this a commemoration we will
all enjoy and be proud to participate in. All congregants should have received invitations, and we have extended invites to past
congregants and clergy who helped to make us what we are today. I look forward to seeing you all on May 14th.

NURSERY SCHOOL
ROSANNE MENDELOWITZ
Nursery School Director
What a busy month March was in the Nursery School! The excitement of Purim kept us busy and led us right
up to spring break! What a fun holiday! We were all busy creating special Purim art projects, reading Purim
stories and eating (and baking) delicious hamentashen. The highlight of Purim, as always, was definitely our
nursery Carnival! Thanks to all of the parents who came out to help, the children were treated to games and
crafts in the holiday spirit. The day was capped off with a special school-wide story time and then a parade for
the parents through the building!
Once the costumes were packed away and we returned to
school refreshed from our break, it was time to turn our
thoughts to Passover! We always spend a lot of time in
preparation for this special holiday! We started our month with
our annual , exciting visit from the Matzo Factory and our
friends at the Living Legacy. All of the children will learn how
matzo is made and they will make their very own to take
home. Passover is a very special time when we welcome our
families into our classrooms for our model seder! This year we
are participating in a Sing-A-Long seder! All of the children will
be able to show off their creative projects (frogs and seder
plates everywhere) and share the telling of the Passover story
in a very whimsical way.
With the arrival of April came thoughts of spring, sunshine, warmer weather (well we can hope) and, of course,
Yom Ha’Atzmaut!! Next month we will share with you all of the details of our special “trip” to Israel. You won’t
believe the journey we take even though we’re only preschoolers!
As we hope you have heard by now, PBJC Nursery is growing! Beginning September 2016, we will be
expanding our already vibrant and stimulating preschool program to accommodate the needs of parents who
require longer hours. Children ages 18 months to 5 years can now enroll in The Giggle Zone, an expanded care
option (hours available from 7:30 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.) to complement our current preschool classes. To add to this
exciting news, The Board of Directors of the Pine Brook Jewish Center are pleased to announce that in honor
of the Grand Opening of the PBJC Nursery Full-Time Giggle Zone, families with children enrolled in the Nursery
School will be made full-time, non-paying Honorary Synagogue Members. We are so pleased to have already
welcomed numerous new families into our PBJC community and more are on their way.
Summer 2016 will be here before we know it. Planning for Pine Brook Day Camp is in full swing! We are
currently accepting applications for children ages 2-5. Registration forms are available through the nursery office
or on our website. At Pine Brook Day Camp we offer an 8 week program highlighted by fabulous weekly themes
and programming that includes water play, arts and crafts, music, games, sports, special events and more!
Be sure to regularly check the PBJC website and Facebook page. We will be sharing all sorts of information,
updates and photos.
As always, my door is always open to anyone who would like more information about any of our nursery
programs.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
MARY SHEYDWASSER
Religious School Director
Generations of Jews have greeted Passover with strenuous housecleaning to remove all traces of chametz or
leaven – the substance that makes dough rise. Jewish tradition provides the reason for this spring cleaning. When
the Hebrew slaves heard that Pharaoh would permit them to leave Egypt, they hurriedly packed lest he change his
mind. Carrying dough for bread on their backs, they allowed it to bake in the desert sun. Later God commanded
the people to remember their deliverance from Egypt each year by eating matzah and avoiding all chametz.
Students will be receiving a Bedikat Chametz kit to recreate this event in their own home by conducting a “search
for leaven”. Armed with a feather,
candle and a wooden spoon, the family
searches the house for the last
remaining crumbs of bread. It is
tradition to hide ten pieces of chametz
around the house, remember where
you hide them, and have our students
partake in having to find every piece!
Yasher Koach to our Kitah Bet
students; they did an outstanding job in
helping lead the Kabbalat Shabbat /
Ma’ariv services. These children have
mastered the beautiful prayers
welcoming in the Sabbath. Blessings are recited over food, wine, Shabbat and holiday candles, and every
important occasion and lifecycle event. With this in mind, our Bet families created a Shalom Bayit piece for their
home, to commemorate their special Shabbat. Let this blessing fill every home in our community.
Blessing for the home:
Let no sadness come through this gate.
Let no trouble come to this dwelling.
Let no fear come through this door.
Let no conflict be in this place.
Let this home be filled with the blessing of joy and peace.
Our Kitah Dalet students were fortunate to meet the youngest Holocaust survivor, Paulette Dorflaufer, and heard
her story of hope and survival. It is up to our future generations to listen and share their stories. L’Dor Va’dor.
Our B’Yachad students (8th through 11th grade) will be taking an exciting trip to Boston this month. Wonderful
activities are planned including exploring our nation’s trip via the Freedom Trail and Duck Tour, visiting the
Aquarium, enjoying a performance by the Blue Man Group and much more. We will be staying near Brandeis
University, and will be attending a Shabbat dinner with their Hillel group.
This academic year has been an enjoyable and rewarding journey so far, filled with adventure and experiences that
helped navigate our students’ religious and spiritual development for the rest of their lives. Every step that we have
taken has been a blessing, and I look forward to watching your children grow into fine young adults.

B’NAI MITZVAH
Emma Danielle Zwickel • April 2, 2016
April 1, 2003 celebrated the arrival of the beautiful Emma Danielle Zwickel to the delight of her
parents Sandy and Alan as well as her big sister Hayley. With her sharp sense of humor and
lovely singing voice, Emma easily puts smiles on the faces of everyone around her. She
enjoys acting, arts & crafts, soccer, sharing time with friends and family, and spending her
summers at Camp Lou Henry Hoover with other Girl Scouts. For her Mitzvah Project,
Emma organized a miniature golf outing and undertook a number of other fundraising
activities to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand in the fight against childhood cancers. We are
so proud to see Emma become a Bat Mitzvah on April 2, and we are excited to celebrate
this simcha with loved ones from near and far.
Michael Usatine • April 16, 2016
Michael came into the lives of his proud parents, Shoshana Schiff and Warren Usatine, on April
5, 2003. He is a great big brother to his sister Rachel. Michael is an honor roll student at Lazar
Middle School and enjoys playing sports and spending time with friends and family. He
spends his summer at his home away from home, Trails End Camp. For his mitzvah project,
Michael did the Twin with a Survivor Program through the Jewish Federation to help
preserve the stories of a Holocaust survivor. Because he has severe food allergies, Michael
also has asked his friends for last eight years to make donations to the Food Allergy
Research & Education Walk instead of giving him birthday presents. Michael amazes us
with his sense of humor, intelligence, thoughtfulness and his love of life. We look forward
to Michael becoming a Bar Mitzvah and sharing his special day with the Pine Brook
Jewish Center community.

SISTERHOOD
ILENE THAILER
President, PBJC Sisterhood
Join the fun! PBJC Sisterhood offers opportunities for social activities, educational experiences, fundraising, and personal growth. We are
dedicated to the perpetuation of Conservative Judaism by promoting Jewish education and encouraging cultural and social activities for
our membership, the congregation and the community. Dues are $45 per year ($36 for our senior members).
Sisterhood is pleased that we were once again able to provide each family in our congregation with a Purim
Basket. We are proud of our Mishloach Manot tradition and thankful for the many people who come together
volunteering their time, which enables us to do this every year. Thank you to all our sponsors and generous
donors for your support, as well as our wonderful co-chairs, MarySue Rossinow and Elisa Sandler. Their
dedication and hard work shines through in this wonderful summer themed basket!
As we shed our winter coats, programming chairs Lois Davis and Michelle Zuckerman will be bringing us a
Restore and Renew Yoga class to help us leap into spring. Our own temple member, Brenda Samlin, will be
leading us in a gentle yoga class to introduce us to the wonderful health benefits that yoga can provide. I
hope to see you there on April 18 at 11:00am. To sign up or if you have any questions, please email Michelle
Zuckerman at [email protected].
Sisterhood will be
commemorating the 120th
anniversary of PBJC by
hosting a Chocolate and
Cheers, girl’s night out on
Thursday May 5. We will be
fundraising in order to provide
PBJC with a new silk flower
arrangement for the Bimah.
This is open to everyone,
whether or not you are a
sisterhood member or temple
member. Be on the lookout for
a flyer with all the details.
We will also be hosting another Mah Jong night. Stay tuned for dates and times. Also on the horizon, is our
annual donor event on Tuesday June 14th. This year we will be seeing the new musical Waitress, starring
Jessie Mueller with music by Sara Bareilles. Get donor points by buying scrip from Kim Stiller at
[email protected], purchasing items from the gift shop or if you want something that you do not see,
email Eve Fields at [email protected] and let her know or purchase tribute cards.
I would like to wish everyone and their families a zissen Pesach and to thank you all for your continued
support of Sisterhood. If you have any questions, thoughts, or even complaints, feel free to contact me at
[email protected] or 201-658-4244. My “door” is always open.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB
BETTY CRANE
Friendship Club Coordinator
The Friendship Club began in 2000 with a grant from MetroWest. Currently, we have about 250 members from Morris and Essex
counties. We meet at various times of the year depending on the synagogue schedule. We take trips to museums, attend concerts and
shows, have a mid-winter brunch in February, a Shabbat dinner in November, and evening programs. We have about eight events a year,
several with bus transportation. Dues are $25 annually.
According to the calendar, spring has arrived. Except for the blizzard in January and some freezing temperatures in
February, we have experienced a rather mild winter and no one is complaining about that.
We had a wonderful turnout at our annual mid-winter brunch on Sunday, February 28. Our guest speaker was
Rabbi Finkel who discussed the various Torah and Haftorah portions preceding the holiday of Passover. It was a
very interesting and informative lecture which provided us with a better understanding of the weekly readings. We
thank Rabbi Finkel for an excellent presentation.
We have scheduled another movie night for Tuesday, April 5 in Scheinman Hall and we will be viewing a
documentary about kosher delicatessens of long ago. Prior to the movie, we will enjoy deli sandwiches, salads and
pickles catered by Deli King of Clark. If you plan to attend this event but have not responded as yet, please do so
immediately.
We are in the process of arranging a day trip in May and another joint program with the Socially Active Senior
Singles in June. Also, the AARP Driver Safety Course will be offered at the synagogue on Wednesday, August 10th.
Complete details about these upcoming events will be mailed to you at the appropriate time.
As a reminder, if you have not paid your annual dues, it is not too late. Since we are no longer receiving any
funding from the synagogue, your financial support is needed. Thank you for your cooperation.
Wishing you a Happy Passover!

SOCIALLY ACTIVE SENIOR SINGLES
ELAINE NACHSHEN
Coordinator
Socially Active Single Seniors is a group of single men and women age 55+. We meet once a
month at the temple or out to a show, movie, dinner, museum etc. We welcome new
members and are receptive to all program suggestions. Please call with any questions or
suggestions. Elaine Nachshen 973-263-0407 or email at [email protected].
In late February SASS attended a performance of “The Producers” at the Alexander Kassar Theatre located on the
campus of Montclair State University. It was a wonderful show. The acting, dancing, singing and stage sets had us
feeling like we were at a Broadway show. This was definitely a 5 star event.
At the time of this writing our March program has not occurred. However on March 20th a matinee performance of
“Girl’s Room”, a comedy at the Parsippany Playhouse is planned. We are anticipating a great matinee and dinner
after the show. On April 17th, we will be going to the Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum to see another
comedy, “My Mother, My Sister and Me”. The story is about a Jewish family living in the Bronx, NY in 1969. All
indications are that this will be a hilarious show. Lastly, coming up in May is a performance of “La Diva Tenors” at
the Wayne Y on May 19th. This is a concert with three tenors and a soprano singing contemporary, pop crossover
selections, broadway hits and a sprinkling of opera. Any single senior who is thinking about joining our group is
welcome to attend one of our programs and see what we are all about. Call with any questions you might have.
SASS wishes everyone a Happy and Healthy Passover.

That there were a
group of about 30
Jewish families that
came to Pine Brook
in the 1890’s. Some,
like the Konner,
Halprin and Bader
families came here to farm and later ran boarding
houses. Others came to vacation and stayed to settle in
the area. They gathered for minyan at the Halprin
home and later at the Konner home, using their own
sefer torah. It was on January 1, 1896 at a party
celebrating the birth of a new child in the Konner
family that they decided to organize formally as
Chevra Agudas Achim (United Brothers
Organization). Land was purchased and a synagogue
built. The first High Holiday services were held at the
new synagogue in September of 1912 and the first
wedding in November 1912. And so began what was to
become Pine Brook Jewish Center.
