The feast of the Dormition or Fallingasleep of the Theotokos is celebrated on
the fifteenth of August, preceded by a
two-week fast. This feast, which is also
sometimes called the Assumption, commemorates the death, resurrection and
glorification of Christ’s mother. It proclaims that Mary has been “assumed” by
God into the heavenly kingdom of Christ
in the fullness of her spiritual and bodily
existence.
As with the nativity of the Virgin and the
feast of her entrance to the temple,
there are no biblical or historical sources
for this feast. The Tradition of the Church
is that Mary died as all people die, not
“voluntarily” as her Son, but by the ne-
cessity of her mortal human nature
which is indivisibly bound up with the
corruption of this world.
The Orthodox Church teaches that Mary
is without personal sins. In the Gospel of
the feast, however, in the liturgical services and in the Dormition icon, the
Church proclaims as well that Mary truly
needed to be saved by Christ as all human persons are saved from the trials,
sufferings and death of this world; and
that having truly died, she was raised up
by her Son as the Mother of Life and participates already in the eternal life of
paradise which is prepared and promised
to all who “hear the word of God and
keep it.” (Luke 11:27-28)

In giving birth, you preserved your virginity. In failing asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You were
translated to life, O Mother of Life, and by your prayers, you deliver our souls from death. (Troparion)
Neither the tomb, nor death, could hold the Theotokos, who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. For being the Mother of Life, she was translated to life, by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb. (Kontakion)
The services of the feast repeat the main theme, that the Mother of Life has “passed over into the heavenly joy, into the
divine gladness and unending delight” of the Kingdom of her Son. (Vesper verse) The Old Testament readings, as well as
the gospel readings for the Vigil and the Divine Liturgy, are exactly the same as those for the feast of the Virgin’s nativity
and her entrance into the Temple. Thus, at the Vigil we again hear Mary say: “My soul magnifies the Lord and my Spirit
rejoices in God my Saviour.” (Luke 1:47) At the Divine Liturgy we hear the letter to the Philippians where St. Paul speaks
of the self-emptying of Christ who condescends to human servitude and ignoble death in order to be “highly exalted” by
God his Father. (Philippians 2:5-11) And once again we hear in the Gospel that Mary’s blessedness belongs to all who
“hear the word of God and keep it.” (Luke 11:27-28)
Thus, the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is the celebration
of the fact that all men are “highly exalted” in the blessedness of the
victorious Christ, and that this high exaltation has already been accomplished in Mary the Theotokos. The feast of the Dormition is the
sign, the guarantee, and the celebration that Mary’s fate is, the destiny of all those of “low estate” whose souls magnify the Lord, whose
spirits rejoice in God the Saviour, whose lives are totally dedicated to
hearing and keeping the Word of God which is given to men in Mary’s
child, the Saviour and Redeemer of the world.
Finally it must be stressed that, in all of the feasts of the Virgin Mother of God in the Church, the Orthodox Christians
celebrate facts of their own lives in Christ and the Holy Spirit. What happens to Mary happens to all who imitate her
holy life of humility, obedience, and love. With her all people will be “blessed” to be “more honorable than the cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim” if they follow her example. All will have Christ born in them
by the Holy Spirit. All will become temples of the living God. All will share in the eternal life of His Kingdom who live the
life that Mary lived.
In this sense everything that is praised and glorified in Mary is a sign of what is offered to all persons in the life of the
Church. It is for this reason that Mary, with the divine child Jesus within her, is called in the Orthodox Tradition
the “Image of the Church”. For the assembly of the saved is those in whom Christ dwells.
OUR BOOKSTORE: HELP NEEDED
As many of you know, our bookstore volunteer, Beth Uhimchuk, has graduated from UC. Beth moved to Texas to further her education. Over the past
few years, our bookstore has become an important ministry for our Parish.
We don’t want to lose any of the benefits that the bookstore provides. We
need to find volunteers to run our bookstore. More than one volunteer will
help to insure that we can be open every week. If you would be willing to

Roof Repair Fund
Now that the Panegyri is over, we have used the majority of proceeds to pay off our line of credit. The
amount of money borrowed on the line of credit was $142,000. We needed $76,000 of these funds to
pay off the remaining balance of the roof repair cost. The other $66,000 was used to pay our monthly
operating expenses. Beginning in September, the Parish Council will resume passing a second tray to
help offset the expense incurred from the roof repair. We are confident that as a Parish Family, we will meet this financial obligation. The Parish Council continues to ask each Parish household to consider a donation of $250 towards Roof Repair Fund.

OVER FIFTY CLUB…Ann Jonson
We hope you are having a wonderful summer!
Congratulations to Steve Jonson, son of Jim and Thelma Jonson,
on his marriage to Julie Smith on June 28.
Congratulations to Mike and Tina Revelos on the birth of their
triplet granddaughters, Katerina, Julia and Joanne. They are the
children of Adam and Mary (Revelos) Knecht who also have a
son, Michael.
John and Erato Kambelos were asked to be grand marshals for
the Fourth of July parade in Maysville. They formerly owned
D’Lites Restaurant in Maysville. They relocated to Cincinnati
last summer after selling their restaurant. Congratulations!
Our sympathy to Mary J. Christos and George and Sophie Jonson on the passing of their brother Jim from Hamilton. He was
also a cousin to Alex and Jim Jonson. May his memory be eternal.
As of May, we have 101 paid members. We have 9 new members and 4 that rejoined. You do not have to be 50 or over to
join. We have quite a few that are under 50. We have lunch, a
short meeting, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and sometimes we have a speaker and at Christmas time we have entertainment. It’s a great way to talk with friends. We usually meet
on the third Saturday of the month, sometimes at Church and
sometimes at a restaurant. It is only $15 a year to be a member.
Our next luncheon will be August 16 at Church. Please join us if
you are interested.
SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL…Cara Chryssovergis
Summer is flying by. I hope you are enjoying the quiet months
of worship with your family. Sunday Church School begins on
Sunday, September 7th. Our Church School has classes for students aged 3 years to high school senior. SCS classes teach a
variety of subjects including Orthodox feast days, the life of Jesus, what we see and do in Church, the saints and apostles, the
Sacraments, and the Divine Liturgy.
In addition we have a Class for ADULTS called, "Living the Orthodox Life". The intent of this class is to refresh understanding of
Orthodox essentials and explore the Orthodox faith with respect
to life. This class is not an in-depth theological discussion class.
It is meant to review many of the ideas observed during worship
or that were learned years ago in SCS.
Each Sunday begins with worship by participating in the Divine
Liturgy, followed by religious education. The Divine Liturgy begins at 9:30 am. Families are encouraged to sit in the first eight
pews on the left side of the Nave which are reserved for Sunday
Church School. Classes begin directly following the distribution
of Holy Communion. Classes end at 11:45 am. One of the best
ways for a child to build a foundation as an Orthodox Christian
is to attend Divine Liturgy and Church School on a regular basis.
SCS uses an all electronic registration system. Because of the
medical authorization form ALL STUDENTS must be registered
electronically every year. A link to the registration form is available on the Church website. Additionally, this link will be emailed to the parish. Please register your students by August 31
so class rosters can be generated promptly. Adult students must
also register electronically.
Sunday Church School is always looking for volunteers interested in improving our program. Specifically, SCS needs individuals who are able to take charge of two major programs –
Nativity Program Director and Food Pantry Coordinator.
Please consider these two opportunities or volunteering as a
teacher/class assistant. It is a wonderful chance to serve your
parish. If you have any questions or would like to offer your
time and talents, contact Cara Chryssovergis at 513-226-2746 or

SCS has a Facebook group. If you would like to be a member,
friend me (Cara Ellis Chryssovergis) on Facebook and I will invite
you to the group. It is another avenue of prompt communication for SCS.
Our SCS program is offered free of charge thanks to your generous Stewardship donations.
DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE… Karen Aamodt
The Daughters of Penelope had an exciting summer! Over the
course of Father’s Day weekend our Chapter along with our
AHEPA Chapter hosted the 86th annual Buckeye District #11
AHEPA Family convention. The event was held at the Crowne
Plaza Hotel in Blue Ash. General Chairmen were Helen Nicholas
and Peter Rodish. A hearty and sincere THANK YOU goes out to
all who helped to organize the events, and to all who attended
or supported the convention.
A trip to Holy Trinity GOC in Carmel, IN to see the newly completed iconography is in the works; a date for early August will
be announced soon. We will host A Greek Summer Feast cooking class fundraiser on Saturday, August 23, at 10:00 AM. Our
next meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 26, at 6:00 PM.
The officers will provide a meal for all members to enjoy and we
will install new officers for the 2014-15 term. If you have questions about our organization, please contact Karen Aamodt at

PHILOPTOCHOS…Georgianne Gaz
The first meeting of Philoptochos will take place following
the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, September 14, 2014. For this
first meeting, the Board will be providing lunch for the members. We also invite those of you interested in finding out
more about Philoptochos and our mission to join us for lunch
and conversation. We will also be presenting a video entitled
“Greek Chicks Rule” with Greek American Stand-Up Comedian Ellen Karis.
The 2014 National Philoptochos Society Biennial Convention
took place July 6 through 9 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Carol Stefanopoulos and Georgianne Gaz represented our
Chapter. They were honored to be present to hear the address and welcome by his All Holiness Bartholomew, Patriarch of Constantinople via Skype. They were also present at

the Grand Banquet to hear the keynote address by our country’s Vice President, Joe Biden. The convention was filled
with great blessings and moments. Carol and Georgianne
will present a report at our meeting on September 14.
Also on September 14, the Ladies of Philoptochos will be
passing a tray for Holy Cross & Hellenic College.
The Walk to End Alzheimers will take place Saturday, October
4. Please see Melanie McNulty’s article on the Walk here in
the Voice for registration and participation details. It is always great fun and raises funds for the research and cure of
this devastating disease.
We have an enjoyable year ahead of us and hope you all will
join us and participate. The Budget will be presented at the
October 12 meeting for discussion and approval.
Parish Council President's Message

The Panegyri is over and once again our fantastic crew of volunteers has delighted thousands of Cincinnatians with their favorite Greek foods and pastries, drinks, dancing, and
above all, our hospitality. The numbers show that we had the second highest Panegyri
gross revenue in our 40-year history. Congratulations to every volunteer who participated
in this significant event. It is a great testimony to the efforts of the parishioners and staff
of Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas and we thank them again for the timeless hours they spent
making this event “Cincinnati’s Finest Church Festival”.
With the summer in full swing, we can now relax and enjoy the summer days, whether you are vacationing,
working in the garden, playing golf, or just taking life easy. We may be on vacation, but God is never on vacation….so don’t retreat from your relationship with Him, or Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas!
Our next event is the Cadillac Reverse Raffle being held September 21. This is a very important revenue opportunity for our parish, so please look outside our community and extend invitations to your friends for this fun event
and a chance (with better odds than the lottery) to win! Tickets will be on sale every Sunday after Divine Liturgy
in the hall and we encourage you to buy them now, to save the expense of mailing tickets out. Our Panegyri
weekend ticket sales were the best we have had in several years and we look forward to making this event the
most successful one ever.
The Clergy Laity Congress was held in Philadelphia in July and the theme was “The Orthodox Family: A Dwelling of
Christ and A Witness of His Gospel”. Archbishop Demetrius’ keynote speech focused on the importance of family
in the Greek Orthodox faith. The conference was filled with inspirational messages from our National Orthodox
hierarchal family, the National Ladies Philoptochos organization, and a total of 1300 attendees. It was truly a
wonderful opportunity to get together with our extended community, and greet and visit with old friends and
new.

Congratulation to Carl Vasiliou on opening his new restaurant, Demetrios Family Restaurant. The new restaurant is located
in Golf Manor on Losantiville Avenue. Carl is the son of Demetrios and Gloria Vasiliou. Please support him in his new venture.
Nicholas and Jennifer Herrmann proudly announce the birth of their first child, a son, Mason James, on May 18, 2014. Proud
Papou and Yiayia are parishioners, Dennis and Anastasia Herrmann. Proud Grandfather and Grandmother are John and
Donna Procopi of Pennsylvania. Very Proud "Big Yiayia" is Betsy Pascal of our Parish.
Kristen Anastasia (Herrmann) Simmer graduated from the University of Michigan on May 2, 2014 with her PhD in Biophysics.
She is the wife of Stephen Simmer of Ann Arbor, MI. Daughter of parishioners Dennis and Anastasia Herrmann. Granddaughter of Betsy Pascal of our Parish and Jean Herrmann of Cincinnati.
Nick Payiatis is a midfielder on the Mariemont High School Varsity Boys' Lacrosse Team, that won the Division 2 State Championship on Saturday, June 7th . They beat Chagrin Falls High School 10-9 in a hard fought game. Mariemont was also the defending State Champion, making this back to back State titles for the Warriors. Proud parents are Paul and Tricia Payiatis.
John and Erato Kambelos, were chosen as the 2014 Grand Marshals for the Fourth of July Parade in Maysville, Ky. They were
honored for the many contributions they made to the Maysville community as long term owners of the D’Lites Restaurant.
They also celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on July 3.
Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Saturday, October 4
The Greek Team for Alzheimer’s is now forming! Beginning on Sunday, September 4, an information table will be set-up in
the gym after Divine Liturgy to sign up team members and/or to take donations. This year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Saturday, October 4 beginning and ending at Sawyer Point. You may also sign-up for the team or donate on-line by visiting the
Alzheimer’s Association website at www.alz.org/cincinnati/ Click on the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Greater CincinnatiNorthern Kentucky. Search for “Greek Team for Alzheimer’s” and follow the cues. Your team captain is Melanie McNulty.

August is a curious month. We usually find ourselves in the “dog days” of summer – the hot temperatures that prompt
vacation escapes. Children and teachers may be back in class before its end, but we continue to cram as much leisure as
possible into what is primarily a vacation month.
August has a different significance in the life of the Church, however: it marks the end of the liturgical year. While outwardly coinciding with civil practice in the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the Church observes something other than
the start of a new fiscal year on September 1st. Each liturgical year represents, through the annual cycle of feasts, fasts
and seasons, a full compendium of the history of salvation. As Orthodox Christians, we are called to order our lives according to the liturgical year not only to recall history but also to introduce God’s plan of salvation into our present reality. This is how we are drawn into the Kingdom of God.
Thus it is appropriate, liturgically speaking, to ask parishioners to consider in August their year-end stewardship contributions to the Church. As is the case at other significant times during the year, our generosity should reflect thanksgiving for the blessings that God bestows upon us.
Moreover, the Stewardship Committee begins its planning this month for the upcoming pledge campaign. There is already forward momentum this year due to the positive stewardship response from our community. A further uptick in
August will help energize our fall pledge campaign even more.
Please make your financial commitment to the Parish if you have not already done so. It is indeed a most acceptable
time to give back to God at the end of the liturgical year.
