Rapid Cycling of Organic Compounds in the Newly Established Aquarium
In the beginning of a newly established aquarium, waste products can quickly build up to toxic levels. Introducing
fish, plants, and food to your aquarium begins a natural process called “Biochemical Cycling” which is exemplified
by the nitrogen cycle. The process begins when fish and invertebrates excrete waste which is added to the ammonia
produced by decaying food and organic compounds. The more sources of fish waste, the quicker and greater the
ammonia problem. Harmful ammonia and nitrite are constantly converted into less harmful nitrates, which in turn
is used by plants and algae for food. An aquarium is full of both autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria that want
nothing more than to attach, grow, and form BIOFILMS where the bacteria convert toxic nitrogenous compounds
and ammonia into harmless products.
Nature provides many types of bacteria that in the presence of oxygen carry out the oxidation of ammonia to nitrites
and eventually to nitrates in a process known as nitrification. First, bacteria settle on aragonite (reef sand) where they
grow into colonies and eventually form a BIOFILM. Marine nitrifying bacteria in the biofilm oxidize ammonia to
nitrite. Then other bacterial species further oxidize nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate not utilized by plants is removed by other
bacteria in the absence of oxygen (the anaerobic environment found in the lower levels of the sediment) in a process
called denitrification.
These bacteria are not harmful and are quite abundant in nature. However, three conditions are required for this
process to occur: 1. A surface upon which bacteria can attach, grow, and form BIOFILM; 2. ammonia as the substrate
to start the process; and 3. an aerobic environment.

Nutri-SeaWater®

It is very important in the maintenance of a marine aquarium
that the environment be replenished regularly. The best
means of accomplishing this is to change 15 percent to 20 percent of the water once a month. The ideal replacement water
is 100% natural ocean saltwater. Natural ocean saltwater contains all the essential elements and micronutrients required by
fish, coral and invertebrates that inhabit your aquarium. In

A critical process in establishing a new marine aquarium system is the culturing of enough bacteria to adequately break
down waste products. Nitrification is the first step in this very
important process. Nitrification is carried out by unrelated
groups of heterotrophic and chemolithotrophic bacteria. The
first group converts ammonia to nitrite, which is then converted to nitrate by the second group. The best-known catalysts
of these reactions are Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, respectively, although other groups have also been identified (Belser
1979, Bergeyʼs 1989). Taken together, these bacteria can be
used to ameliorate damage to the aquarium environment by
reducing the ammonia content, which is generated as biologic
waste. Effective ammonia removal is extremely important as
ammonia is toxic to aquatic life and it creates a large demand
for oxygen (USEPA 1993).

Nature's Ocean® Coral Base Aquarium Rock is 100% premium
all natural aragonite rock covered with naturally formed holes
and crevices which makes for some very interesting and
unique shapes and is easy to stack when creating a base for
growing live coral or as an addition to existing coral-based
ecosystems. This porous characteristic provides a natural
biological filter as well as a perfect environment for denitrifying
marine bacteria to grow and flourish, which effectively reduces

Nature's Ocean® Coral Base Aquarium Rock for culturing
live rocks is the logical choice for aquarium hobbyists, whether
you are in the business of coral farming or aquascaping,

Aquarium Rock is deepwater soaked to prevent leeching and
then cleaned and cured by a specific drying process to create

and natural habitat of marine animals. Live coral reefs can be
cultured or grown from coral base rock by placing live coral
fragments or cuttings in or around coral base aquarium rock. A
similar process of culturing live coral is by "seeding" the coral
base aquarium rock with live substrates or live sand which
contains small live coral fragments and tiny marine animals that
can flourish within the pockets cavities of the base rock.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE: For new setups, empty
contents of bag into aquarium and fill with
de-chlorinated tap water or distilled water. Activ-Flora®
Bio-Activ Nutrient-Enriched™ Substrate will automatically bi-segment into 2 layers with finer grade substrate
on the bottom. If adding to an existing system, drain
liquid prior to introducing new substrate and add
slowly, while mixing.
Activ-Flora® Bio-Activ Nutrient-Enriched™ Substrate is
pre-washed by a nutri-stabilizing process to preserve
abundant trace elements and reduce cloudiness when
introduced to an aquarium. Cloudiness can be further
minimized by filling tank at a slow rate so that the
ActivFlora® base is not disturbed. Slight initial cloudiness
is normal and will clear rapidly (1–6 hours).
Plants must be placed in substrate with roots as deep as
possible. Stabilize with rocks, wood or other decorative
medium.
Recommended use is 2 lbs (1 kg) of Activ-Flora®
Bio-Activ Nutrient-Enriched™ Substrate for each gallon
(3.78 liter) of water. A depth of 3 inches (7.62 cm) is
ideal for best results.
