MARCH 17, 2014 MEETING: Sam Pecorilla, plus some very talented ladies for “Ladies' Night”
Sam Pecorilla, a long time club member whose other home is in Monroe, Oregon, played the
pre-meeting music, accompanied by Jim Winning on drums. They played a beautiful selection of songs, beginning with “The Sweet Memories Of You” and including all kinds of
tunes, along with some really pretty Irish songs. Thanks guys - that was very entertaining.
Now for our Ladies - first up was Jan Mundy - she started her set
with a tango, then a tune called “Ole Guapa,” then “Besame Mucho,” and finished with “La Compasita.” Very nice, Jan - I hope
your broken foot gets better quickly.
Rosemary Smith, one of our favorite members from Sun City,
played next. She began with “My Melody Of Love,” then a polka,
then “Ramblin’ Rose,” “Paper Roses,” and finished up with a medley of Irish songs, “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” “My
Wild Irish Rose,” and ending with “Sweet Rosie
O’Grady.” Thanks, Rosemary.
Susan Kidd was up now - she began with “Andalucia,”
then a French song - sorry Susan, couldn’t hear the
names of your selections, but we enjoyed them!
Diane Marden played next - sorry Diane - we
couldn’t hear what your tunes were, either, but they
sounded pretty.
Joan Haas, accompanied by Jim Winning on
drums, played “Blue Bayou,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,”
and finished up with a nice tango. It’s good to hear you play
again, Joan.
We missed you.
John Trippon played “Zerkus
Renz,” “American Patrol,” and
“Her Mit Meinen.”
All that practice is paying off,
Sam Pecorillo played
another half hour or so
to end the evening that was a long gig for
you Sam thanks for doing it - it
was beautiful!
John - you sounded great!
And a perfect ending
for St. Patrick’s Day.

President’s Message
Our Sunday March 30, 2014 concert at "La Casa" was a tremendous success. We
had more than 100 accordion lovers and their families attend. Our senior ensemble
Bob Torkelson, Irena Cebelinski, Susan Kidd, Shellie Rudow, Phil Fox, Ron
Grabowski was artfully led by our Music Director Jack Dermody.
Our junior ensemble, Natalie Laborin, Natalie Longoria, Abby Neskovic, Ian
Patrick Rankin, Joey Rankin, and Nina Vuletic was led by their music teacher
Pete Donatella. Performances included, Ilmar Kuljus solo, duets of Frank
Schweller/Dennis Humilchek, Jazz trio of Paul Betken (with Sean Brogan on
Bass and Micah Hummel on percussion), Trio of Bob Torkelson/Jack Dermody/
Ron Grabowski, Tony Putrino solo, and Dale Matthies solo. Micah Hummel of
Arizona State University accompanied most of the players on percussion.
I thank all of you who came with your families to enjoy this concert "Celebrating
the Accordion" and provided our Arizona Accordion Club with a big contribution
to our financial status - Net proceeds was about $1000. We are already planning for
next year's event. Anyone who would like to join either the Senior or Junior Ensembles should contact me or Jack Dermody for information.
Special thanks to our Music Director Jack Dermody who held more than 12
rehearsals at his home during the combined effort to produce this concert. Paul
Betken provided publicity leadership; Susan Kidd created the program; Bob
Torkelson provided refreshments; Teri Fox and Rose Dermody handled sales of
tickets at the concert; and Jay Stevens for stage setup. Many others pitched in to
help us get this event to be a success.
Regards to our Vice President Jerry Szemanski who continues to recover from
heart surgery he underwent last year. Get well soon - we miss you.
The summer season approaches. Please plan to play for the meetings to show us
what you like to play at home for all of us to enjoy.

Accordion Wrestling
Accordion Wrestling is a sport, theatre, dance, music performance art piece conceived by Kimmo Pohjonen.
The performance, featuring Pohjonen and ten Finnish wrestlers, is a revival of Finnish wrestling tradition from early to mid
-1900s where accordion was included as musical accompaniment for wrestling matches. Accordion Wrestling expands
the original event into a larger performance piece that also incorporates surround sound, a custom made wrestling mat
with microphones imbedded, special lighting, archive video and fotos and narration by wrestlers.
… this one might be his finest work, as it achieves a breathtaking combination of (live) music, theater, dance, sports contest, history and multimedia show – and still being so much fun to watch.
…As introduction to the event a tale, just like a story from the Kalevala, is linking the mythical origins of wrestling and the
creation of the accordion; and even if you don´t speak Finnish you can follow the narration, as an English translation of the
spoken text is projected onto a circular screen.
This multimedia aspect remains an integral part of the show, revealing historical facts (through interviews with wrestlers and musicians)
for example that having accordion players at Finnish wrestling events has a
long tradition, mainly for the simple reason to mask the sound of the
wrestlers´ flatulences…
