Morgan and Eve’s story…
GO!
People will come and go out of our
lives. Have you ever thought about
saying that with animals instead of
people? I never have. That is, until I
came to volunteer at the Greenville
Humane Society. I first had the desire
to work there after adopting my own dog, Eve.
My sisters and I had come to pick out a small little
puppy we had seen earlier in the week, but found out
she had already been adopted. I was disappointed,
but decided to give the other dogs a chance. We
walked into the room of older dogs and I noticed
Eve immediately. She was with the older dogs even
though she was only seven months old. She looked so
small and lonely in the cage and she was very shy. We
walked her around the courtyard and found that she
would stay with one person for a long time. She got
attached easily, and so did we. We asked my parents
if we could get her, they said yes and we adopted her.
Our photo is featured on the cover of this issue.
Today, she is happier than ever. She has gotten used
to people and is no longer the shy puppy we first
adopted. Eve is always playing and having fun chasing
her tennis ball, running with us in the backyard and
trying to chase squirrels when we go for walks. She is a
sweet addition to our family.
Now I go to volunteer once a week and I see animals
that need and want a home. I want to take them all! Of
course, I can’t. But with your help, we can give them
all good homes. I hope you consider adopting from
shelters or rescues in Critter Magazine. The animals are
checked over to make sure they healthy then they are
spayed or neutered. Make a New Year’s Resolution to
adopt an animal that needs you!
You may not be able to adopt an animal right now…..
but, what about donating some time? Your gift of $10
may not seem like much but it would mean a lot to a
group in Critter. There are so many ways that you can

and How it Affects Your Dogs

What is the Canine Flu?
Canine influenza is a contagious viral infection of dogs,
caused by Influenza Virus A subtype H3N8.
What does the Canine Flu do to dogs? The canine
influenza virus can cause mild to severe illness. Mild
effects include a soft, moist cough with or without
a low grade fever that lasts 10 to 30 days despite
treatment, along with yellow/green nasal discharge
if a secondary bacterial infection occurs. More severe
illness can result in high grade fever as well as rapid/
difficult breathing, which is usually caused by secondary pneumonia.
Is Canine Flu fatal? Typically, most infected dogs
develop mild to moderate signs that resolve within 10
to 30 days without problems. As with other flu viruses,
fatalities can potentially occur, but are not common
and are generally due to secondary complications
such as bacterial pneumonia.
How easy is it for my dog to catch? The virus is
contagious—spread via aerosolized respiratory secretions. Thus far, most outbreaks have occurred between
dogs who are kept in large numbers in relatively close

disease, there is no natural or vaccine-induced immunity—so all dogs are susceptible.
I think my dog may have caught Canine Flu. How do
I know for sure? The symptoms of canine influenza
closely resemble those seen with other respiratory
diseases, such as kennel cough. Because of this, kennel
cough can potentially be mistaken for canine flu. While there is currently no reliable rapid test available
to veterinarians for diagnosing canine influenza, tests
are available at certain diagnostic labs. For more information, contact your local veterinarian.
Can people get Canine Flu? There is no evidence to
date demonstrating that the canine influenza virus can
be spread from dogs to humans. It is typically uncommon for a virus to “travel” from one species of animal to
another, and then become infectious among individuals of the second species with normally functioning
immune systems.

Can I? Or Should I?
One of the most frustrating aspects of being a wildlife
rescue is accepting the fact that the average person
only asks themselves “can I do this” rather than asking
themselves “should I do this.” For example, “can I” try
to keep a baby deer? You can, but what you should be
asking yourself is “should I” try to keep a baby deer? If
you ask a wildlife rescuer, you would get a resounding
“NO you shouldn’t!” so fast it would make your head
spin.
The primary problem is that the “can I do this” person
fails to remember that this deer is going to grow into
a BIG DEER and when it does, the person will likely
call on Foothills Animal Rescue requesting one of our
volunteers to risk life and limb to transport a 70 pound
deer that has not only been domesticated to some
extent, but also has no way of knowing how to take
care of itself in the wild.
This concept of asking oneself “can I” or “should I”
really should be everyone’s process of questioning
themselves before adopting an animal or even tackling
the thankless task of rearing a wild animal for eventual
release back into the wild. That animal will become
sexually mature and at that time it will most likely hurt
you or someone else. By that time that animal becomes
too dangerous to keep and yet won’t have the survival
skills necessary to live as a true wild animal.
Adopting exotic birds is also a time for you to have the
“should I” talk with yourself. We get so many requests
to take exotic birds that have outgrown their welcome
in homes where they were once the center of attention.
Exotic birds make lots of noise at times – that is their
nature when out in the wild. These instincts don’t
go away simply because they are put in a cage in
someone’s living room. Over time most people just
can’t take the noise anymore and the bird ends up in
a closet or a back room sitting by itself, suffering from
loneliness and fear over the changes in its lifestyle.
Please consider the above before trying to take in any
wild animal. Put the needs of the animal first and call a
wildlife expert who can give the animal the best chance
at being rehabilitated and returned to the wild.

Lookin’ for Double Trouble
and Double Fun?
Dachshund pair looking for a forever home
Meet Poncho and Lefty, two sweet natured, fun loving
dachshund brothers. They
are approximately one year
old, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm-negative,
neutered and ready for a
family to call their own.
Poncho, shown at top right,
has beautiful long hair and
is the more laid back of the
two. He loves to snuggle
and give puppy kisses. He
weighs 16 pounds and has
adorable bear paws!
Lefty, shown below Poncho,
is the rabble rouser in this
pair! He is a very well behaved dachsie, but if trouble is to
be started, chances are Lefty is involved. He is smaller at
13 pounds and has the cutest puppy face.
Both Poncho and Lefty are very friendly and love people,
including children who know how to properly treat
dachshunds. They do fine with other dogs as well. They
are crate trained and are learning housebreaking in their
foster home.

Sweet Cammie Needs a Home...
My name is Cammie and I am a beautiful Catahoula/Shepherd mix.
I am approximately 5 years old. I was rescued with all my brothers
and sisters from people who neglected us, and so far everyone in my
family has a new home but me. I am a sweet, loving girl who is very
loyal and do not know why I am overlooked. I guess I am waiting for
the perfect family... could it be you?
I would do well with other dogs - I am fine with them once we get to
know one another. Since I have lived my whole adult life at the shelter, it’s probably best that I be placed with adults only. Please give me
a chance to show you I am worth having a loving family just like all
my siblings.
All of my vet care has been taken care of at my rescue organization’s
foster home. I am spayed, current on all vaccinations
