Yom Hashoah – Holocaust Memorial Day
Sunday, April 7, 7:00pm at CBI
Featuring Synergism Women’s
Community Chorus
Jewish songs as well as other
songs related to struggle and
Our annual community
commemoration of Yom
Hashoah takes places on
Sunday, April 7 at 7:00pm at
CBI. Our special guests will
be Synergism, a beautiful and
energetic women’s community
chorus co-directed by Mary
Lou Lim and Daun Weiss. They
will perform some traditional
hope.
The Yom Hashoah service,
which honors the memory
of both Jews and non-Jews
killed in the Holocaust, begins
with our traditional interfaith
candle-lighting ceremony.
The rest of the program will
feature art and poetry written
by Jews while imprisoned
in concentration camps, in
addition to the traditional
memorial prayers.
Audrey Zeichick to Become a Bat Mitzvah on April 20
Hi everyone I am Audrey
Zeichick. My Bat Mitzvah is
coming up soon so I will tell you
a little about me and my family.
My hobby is soccer, I am eleven
years old but will turn twelve in
a couple of weeks, my favorite
color is blue, and my favorite
animal is a red panda. For a
pastime I often read, draw, and
organize. To study for my Bat
Mitzvah I have been practicing
with Avraham and he has been a
big help with helping me learn my
Torah portion. My middle sister,
Joy, is 13 years old. She is in 8th
grade and is a very good dancer,
and enjoys reading. Kaitlyn, my
oldest sister, is 15 and plays the
clarinet. She is very smart and is
very focused on her studies. My
mom, Kelly, works from home so
she has lots of time to spend with
the animals. Her favorite color
is red. Most of you know my
dad because he is often helping
people. He works at Chico State
teaching computer science.
For my Mitzvah project I
have raised money for my school
library. So far I have raised over
500 dollars. To do this I had a
little competition between grades
fourth through sixth. First, I put
a jar in each classroom, explained
to all of them how to play the
game, and then we started the
competition. The rules are simple:
to win the game you have to
be the class that has the most
pennies. To make sure other
classes don’t win you can go into
their class and put anything in
that is not a penny. For example,
if you put in a dollar it counts a
hundred points against them, if
you put in a nickel in it counts
five points against them, etc.
Then we counted up all the
classrooms and we raised a lot of
money for our library.
My Bat Mitzvah is scheduled
for Saturday, April 20, and I hope
to see you all there.

Lag Ba’Omer Pool Party &
Potluck Picnic
Sunday, April 28, 4:00pm at the Edelman Home
Lag Ba’Omer is the thirty-third day of the Omer,
the count of 49 days from Passover to Shavuot.
It is a minor holiday recalling some positive
developments during the period of the Roman
occupation of ancient Judaea. Traditions of the
day include outdoor sports and bonfires to remind
us of that period’s heroic soldier-scholars.
Building on last year’s fun social event, the
Edelmans will host another Lag Ba’Omer party
at their home (address in the CBI roster). The
fun starts at 4:00pm, and all ages are encouraged
to attend, including children. Enjoy a dip in the
pool, noshes, socializing, and a kumsitz bonfire
(weather permitting). RSVP to Carol Edelman:
[email protected]
What to bring:
• The whole family!
• Swimsuits and towels for the pool
• A veggie or dairy dish for the Potluck
picnic dinner
• The Edelmans will provide potatoes for
roasting—and all the trimmings
• Noshes and drinks are good, too
• Musical instruments for our sing-along
Regionally on Lag Ba’Omer
Sacramento Jewish Heritage Festival
The annual Jewish Heritage Festival, Sunday, April
28, 10:00am to 2:00pm, is sponsored by the Jewish
Federation of the Sacramento Region. It is held in
Midtown at 20th & Capitol in Sacramento. Enjoy
food trucks, shopping, and exciting entertainment
and activities for children of all ages! For details,

Presentation by Professor
Michael Leitner: Mitigating the
Arab-Israeli Conflict, One Goal
at a Time
Tikkun Olam
Torres Shelter Project
April 16 from 4:00pm to 4:50pm in Ayres Hall, Room 120
Professor Michael Leitner conducted extensive
research from 2011 to 2012 in Israel on the effects
of three sports programs on the attitudes of Arabs
and Jews toward each other:
1. Mifalot’s year-long “Get to Know Your
Neighbor” soccer program with Israelis,
Palestinians, and Jordanians, ages 8-15
February’s very special “Marinara Mitzvah” Torres
Shelter meal was provided once again by the Jewish
Teens of Chico (JTC) along with the confirmation
class members. The Tikkun Olam Committee would
like to thank the following participants:
Charlette, Ari, and Steve Naiman
2. The Peres Center’s yearlong sports programs
with Israeli Arabs and Jews, ages 8-15
Joy, Kaitlin, and David Zeichick
3. The Friendship Games, a weeklong
basketball tournament and social program
for college age athletes of various national
identities, including Israelis, Palestinians,
Jordanians, and Europeans
Lilia Diaz and Sharon Kaplan
The research last year was quantitative in nature,
examining the difference in pre-test and post-test
questionnaires. During the winter intersession,
Professor Leitner conducted qualitative research,
interviewing Jewish and Arab adults being trained
as soccer coaches and also receiving “peace
education” as part of their training course. The
purpose of this research was to gain further
insight into how to most effectively promote
peaceful relations and coexistence through sports
programs. The presentation will present the main
findings of the latest research from December and
January, as well as some of the highlights from last
year’s research. Plans for the continuation of the
research with Mifalot and The Friendship Games
will be discussed, as well as, information about
other programs that bring together Arabs and Jews
in Israel through recreational activities.
To acknowledge Israel Independence Day, the
event will include Israeli music and hopefully some
Israeli folk dancing.

Torres Shelter Project.”
From Our Rabbi Rabbi Dr. Julie Hilton Danan
In March, as I brought three new Jews-byChoice before a Beit Din (“court”) of three
rabbis (including myself) in Sacramento, I
was once again struck by how special and
meaningful it is to hear people who are new
to Judaism describe what led them here. It is
invariably a moving experience in which I learn
as much as I teach.
It is a similar experience to hearing our
Confirmation students give their speeches and
tell about their Jewish beliefs and goals, but that
is a public service and the Beit Din is private.
Although I can’t share the specific content of
what individuals have shared over the years,
I would like to share some of the recurring
themes. Sometimes when we see Judaism and
Torah with the eyes of those who are new to it,
we view it with a renewed appreciation. People
who embrace Judaism as adults (whether born
Jewish or converts) often come to it as part of
a long process of spiritual growth and study,
sometimes appreciating it even more than those
who were privileged to inherit it.
Over the years, I have heard similar
themes and motivations from people choosing
Judaism. Again and again I hear an appreciation
that Judaism honors questions and personal
struggles, rather than dictating a certain credo
that individuals have to uphold. Some people
come to Judaism from faiths that mandated
a certain set of beliefs and discouraged
questioning or else upheld one “correct”
answer.
In a similar vein, many people are drawn
to the intellectual side of Judaism, the endless
study of Torah and text over the ages. They
appreciate Judaism because it engages their
mind.
For others, Judaism engages their hearts.
They may have grown up feeling a void,
afloat in a modern society that was weak on
connection and meaning. Judaism offers a
strong sense of local and global community, a
“tribe” with which to connect anywhere in the
world, and rituals and customs
that nurture a strong sense of
family in the home.
In particular, many people
come to Judaism for spiritual
Rabbi Dr. Julie Hilton Danan
reasons, as the culmination
of years of spiritual search. Often, they feel it
gives them a direct connection to God, without
a hierarchy or intermediaries. Rabbi Steve
Fisdel, a former visiting rabbi in Chico, explains
that the word “Israel,” the name of the Jewish
people, means not only “wrestles with God”
(valuing the questions and struggles) but also
can be read, “Yashar-El,” “straight to God.”
Ironically, sometimes spiritual seekers who
come to Judaism are more open about talking
about God than those who are born Jews.
Sometimes we tend to emphasize Jewish history,
community, or social action and shy away
from discussing our faith. But I know from
experience that given the opportunity, most
all of us can articulate our deepest spiritual
experiences, values, and beliefs. We shouldn’t
have to wait for a special life-cycle event to
share these precious experiences. As Reb
Zalman teaches, we can each introduce some
“Shema Yisrael” moments into our interactions
with one another, sharing and listening to our
beliefs and connections to the One. As we travel
the path from Passover to Shavuot, I bless each
of us to be able to open up and to share with
each other the spiritual foundations that give
meaning to our lives. Amen.
Mazal Tov to our newest Jews-by-Choice
Chelsea Thornton, who has chosen the
Hebrew name Emunah.
Andrea Phillips, who has chosen the Hebrew
name Ahuva.
John Phillips, who has chosen the Hebrew
name Shlomo Yochanan and would like to be
called Shlomo.

Shul School News
Keren Carter, Shul School Director and
Rabbinic Intern
As the Hebrew month of Nisan gives
way to the Hebrew month of Iyar,
we move from Torah holidays into
Historical Holidays.
We finished Nisan, the month in which Passover
begins with making Matzo Covers for next year’s
celebrations.
During this month we are blessed with Yom
HaAtzma’ut, Israel Independence Day, on Tuesday,
April 16! I’ve taken a poll of our students and they
truly desire to again “Eat Israel” as has been done
for the past 5 years at least! The Gimel students
especially stated that they have greater knowledge
about the places in Israel and thus could better
create the state of Israel from ice cream. We use
sprinkles for land formations, M&M’s for cities and
special places.
The community is welcome to join us for this
crazy fun way to learn about our sacred homeland.
While all supplies for our students will naturally be
available for them, I must request that community
members who desire to join us to contact me
directly to guarantee I have enough supplies for
you. You are welcome to contact Keren Carter at,
[email protected].
Adult Beginning Hebrew
Learning – Moving on and
Moving UP
Keren Carter, Rabbinic Intern
CBI’s Beginning Hebrew Class has graduated from
the first book in the series, Aleph isn’t Tough, and
is now moving on to the second book, Aleph isn’t
Enough. Now able to decode Hebrew letters into
sounds and read fluently, a sizable group will be
moving forward in their learning. This is quite a
celebration!
Thus, this new Intermediate Hebrew will begin
during Sukkot in September and anyone is welcome
to join us. Prerequisite is identification of all the
Hebrew letters and vowel sounds, and the ability to
read fluently, albeit slowly.
Adult Beginning Hebrew will again be offered
in the spring of 2014. I hope you will join me
on this journey into understanding more about
the joys of this ancient and accessible language.
Please contact Keren Carter for private sessions or
questions at, [email protected].
Adult Intermediate Hebrew –
Kadima!
Keren Carter, Rabbinic Intern
The Intermediate class has also graduated! We
will move from the second book in the series,
Aleph isn’t Enough, to the third book, Bet is for
Bereisheet. These students can now translate small
paragraphs of Hebrew sacred texts and will soon
begin translating larger texts. They will also learn
more about the grammar rules that make Hebrew
such a fascinating language. We will be meeting
on Sundays beginning in April. All are welcome to
join us! Contact Keren Carter for private sessions
or questions at, [email protected].

Todah Rabbah
Thank you so much to David and Fran Halimi for
their many contributions to the Yuval Ron weekend.
They organized the dinner for Friday night,
including set up and clean up, as well as, providing
delicious homemade desserts from Fran’s kitchen.
Before the concert on Saturday night, they hosted
the cocktail party at Diamond W. Fran and David,
the food was plentiful and delicious and so much
appreciated!
Haverot Happenings
Sue Mintzes, President
We did it! A new wall oven is in the kitchen
complementing the new refrigerator, stove, and
dishwasher. We should all use them in good health.
We have a five-year warranty on each appliance.
Unfortunately, we did have an issue with the
refrigerator, but Ginno’s came out and fixed it. We
do have to be careful to be sure the freezer tray is
in the right spot so the freezer closes completely.
But, otherwise we are in good shape.
There is no secret as to how we had the funds
to do this remodel. Bagel Brunch receipts are
critical. So, please watch for your set of tickets to
sell to your family, friends and neighbors, or use the
occasion to treat your friends to an afternoon of
good food and great conversation. Fran Halimi has
agreed (Again!) to chair the event this year, and so
you can expect the excellent food and professional
presentation that has been the trademark of the
brunch. I do not know yet what the board has in
mind for the Cinco de Maya theme, but if you have
suggestions, please contact Fran (halimifamily@
sbcglobal.net). Everyone needs to mark Sunday,
May 5 on her calendar. We will have sign ups for
committees at our Women’s Issues meeting April
21 and we will follow up with an email signup, as
well.
And speaking of Women’s Issues, we are in for
a treat. Our sister, Bonnie Megibow, will address
the topic of alternative pain management without
medication, an issue important to many of us. She
will also host. Sisterhood members will receive an
evite with details. We will be offering carpools to
her beautiful home in Forest Ranch. Again, note
the date of Sunday, April 21.
Our big news is that we are welcoming three
sisters to serve on the board next year: Wendy
Marsters, Sylvia Bowersox, and Chelsea Thorton.
We are fortunate to have their input and expertise.
Thank you in advance to all of them for agreeing
to serve.
I hope you are as excited as I am about our
upcoming events. Let us know if you have
questions or suggestions. Shalom, Sue

The next book we read is Sacred Apples by
Isaac Frankel. The meeting will take place on
Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m. Please contact Irv
Schiffman at [email protected] to be
notified of the place and possible changes in
plans.
Here is the book
description from Amazon –
“Everything in this world has
a past. For Father Joseph, the
past he thought he left behind
and the future he could never
have imagined have come
together in ways that are not
necessarily of this world at
all. For people of diverse
faiths, thrust together in the
holy city of Jerusalem, Sacred
Apples brings out the best and the worst in
human nature. The essential part of ourselves
resonates in the lives of the characters we
meet. And like Father Joseph, like Nicole,
Kudsa, Rabbi Aryeh and Tamar, in the course
of exploring the lives of the ‘stranger,’ we
discover more about ourselves. Sacred Apples
is a spellbinding journey to find the deepest
truths that connect us all. It is a poignant and
riveting story that will stay with you forever. It
will enlighten you and nourish your soul.”

Congregation Beth Israel
Congregation Beth Israel is an independent, egalitarian Jewish
community whose roots date back a century. The synagogue is
both nondenominational and unaffiliated. Our guiding principle
is K’lal Yisrael, the unity of the Jewish people. True to that spirit,
CBI embraces a diverse membership of Jews from all backgrounds
as well as interfaith couples and those exploring Judaism. We serve
about 100 families in the greater Chico area with a wide range of
programs for toddlers, tweens, teens, adults, and seniors. Our Shul
School is very strong, and our Sisterhood is very active. Services are generally held Friday nights at 7:30
p.m. and Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. We also hold services on all major Jewish holidays.
The ideal to which we strive is Mordecai Kaplan’s concept of the “synagogue center,” in which a
congregation serves both as a house of worship and as a community center. Rabbi Julie Hilton Danan
provides the inspirational leadership for our Jewish values: study, Torah; worship and practice, Avodah; social
action, Tikkun Olam; acts of kindness, Gemilut Hasadim; and connection with the Jewish People, Am Yisrael.
