Health & Healing
Made Possible Through Giving
321 Employee Giving Hits Record-Breaking Year!
E
very year, Deaconess employees are invited to participate in the 321 Club, a giving campaign
in which staff can pledge $3.21 or more to the Foundation out of every pay check. This year
Deaconess employees went above and beyond by breaking previous records of number of
employees giving and amount of funds raised! More than 570 employees participated, raising
more than $72,000 to support health initiatives at Deaconess! Donors designate
their gifts to funds such as employee continuing education, mammograms for
women in need, cancer care, and pediatrics. The support of the Deaconess team
is an important part of the foundation’s donations.
Thank you to our generous employees!
Foundation Provides Grant for
Wound, Ostomy and Continence
A
mong the many grants awarded this spring,
Deaconess Foundation was pleased to award funds
for special certification to Sarah Blotsky, a registered
nurse from Deaconess Wound Services.
Sarah will receive continuing education to become a
certified wound, ostomy and continence nurse. This
highly-specialized certification allows for increased
patient care, resulting in reduced patient hospital stays
and lower hospital re-admittance rates. Congratulations,
Sarah!

DEACONESS CLASSIC
for Women’s Health
T
he 22nd Annual Deaconess Classic for
Women’s Health was another sellout year!
The event brought in more than $120,000 for
women’s health, specifically cancer screenings
for women who cannot otherwise afford them.
After a few light sprinkles, the sun came out
for a perfect day of golf. LPGA guest, Danah
Ford Bordner, led an informative morning golf
clinic followed by an afternoon golf scramble
with 134 golfers. The evening concluded with
a formal dinner during which golfers and their
guests were able to celebrate the funds raised,
winning foursomes, and individuals making a
difference in the fight against cancer.
A special thank you to the more than 100
companies and individuals who generously
donated to or supported the event! Mark your
calendars for May 15, 2017.
See more photos of the event throughout this
Legacy issue or by visiting www.deaconess.
com/classic and viewing our photo gallery at
the bottom of the page.
Bordner spoke about her personal platform
to support women’s health, specifically those
affected by ovarian cancer. This is a deeply
personal issue for her, as she lost her best
friend to the disease.
The Pam Rausch Spirit Award was also given
to the 2016 winner, Scott Evernham. Evernham
and his late wife, Robin, began the Robin’s
Nest Fund devoted to helping families on their
journey to conquer cancer. A donation to his
charity was given in honor of the excellent
work he has done in our community.

Turley Family Gives the Gift of Cancer Research
D
eaconess Foundation was honored to receive
a generous donation from the family of
kidney cancer patient Steve Turley.
Jo Nell Turley said she was amazed by the care
her husband received. “Steve was able to be with
us longer than doctors thought. I know that’s
because of the care he received at Deaconess,”
she said.
The family formed a special connection to Steve’s
physician, Dr. Joseph Klink, who even visited their
family farm in Kentucky and drove a tractor with
Steve.

Research), Dr. Joseph Klink (Deaconess Clinic
Urologic Oncologist), Jo Nell Turley (wife), Lauren
Turley (daughter-in-law), Georgia Mae Turley (grand
daughter), and Amanda Coomes (family friend).
In memory and celebration of Steve’s life, family
and friends raised $1,000 to support kidney
cancer research at Deaconess. Thank you to the
Turley’s for honoring Steve in this special way!
Celebration of Leadership for Jacobsville
T
he Civic Engagement Award at the
Celebration of Leadership event was
awarded to Melissa Tines for her dedicated
involvement in the Jacobsville community.
The event is hosted by Leadership Evansville.
Jacobsville (the community surrounding the
Deaconess downtown campus) has been
undergoing many positive changes in the
past few years.
We look forward to supporting the continued
development of our community. Thank you
to individuals like Melissa who make this
possible!

Heart Hospital Recognized for Excellence
The Heart Hospital at Deaconess Gateway once again received
national honors when Healthgrades® announced The Heart
Hospital as a recipient of the 2016 Healthgrades Patient Safety
Excellence Award™ and Outstanding Patient Experience Award™.
Students Give Handmade Blankets to NICU
S
pecial thank you to the National
Elementary Honor Society students from
Highland Elementary who demonstrated
that generosity starts at a very young age.
Students handmade more than 90 blankets
to be used in the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit (NICU) at The Women’s Hospital.
The bright colors from the handmade
blankets provide stimulus for developing
infants and a warm environment for anxious
parents with NICU babies. Thank you to
these special students for giving your time
and resources!

Senior Sells Candy to Raise Donation Funds
A
s part of his senior project, Steven James
of New Tech Institute High School sold
lollipops for three months to raise money to
donate to the Chancellor Center. Through his
hard work, he was able to present a check for
$603.02 to Deaconess. Students like Steven
demonstrate great care for their community
and passion to see quality health care
continued in the Tri-State. Thank you to Steven
and students who begin giving at an early age.

Happening Around the Hospital
Hospice House Construction Continues
C
onstruction of the Deaconess Hospice House continues in full force. A celebratory “topping
out” ceremony took place in April as hospital staff and community members watched the final
steel beam, signed by hundreds of people, hoisted into place.
Although construction is behind due to significant rainfall earlier in the year, construction crews are
working more to meet deadlines. Framework is up, and the beautiful arches of the hospice chapel
are clearly visible (picture above).
The Foundation is currently fundraising for $5 million to support the house. Many sponsorship
opportunities have already been claimed. If you have inquiries about naming opportunities or
giving at the level of our recognition wall, please contact the Foundation office, 812-450-3359.
Visit www.deaconess.com/hospicehouse to view a digital booklet about the new facility.
Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic at The
Women’s Hospital
T
he Women’s Hospital, Deaconess, Evansville
Surgical Associates and Vantage Oncology
have worked collaboratively to develop the
Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic for
patients who have recently been diagnosed
with breast cancer.
The Clinic includes breast surgeons, medical
oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic
surgeons, genetic counseling, certified breast
nurse navigators, physical therapists, and other
health care providers.
This highly skilled group reviews a patient’s
breast imaging studies and other tests.
Together they form a comprehensive plan.
Typically, seeing all these clinicians could
take several weeks. Instead, a patient is able
to meet all providers involved in their care
within a single appointment. The number of
6
days from diagnosis to treatment is greatly
reduced, lessening anxiety and inconvenience
for patients and their families. Together, the
care team and patients can determine the best
individualized treatment option.
The concept for this clinic began with Dr.
Schuman and the staff at The Women’s
Hospital in late 2014. This has developed into
a full program, providing top, patient-focused
health care to individuals with breast cancer.
The Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic is
another of the many reasons Deaconess is a
leader in health care. Anyone diagnosed with
breast cancer, including those who receive free
mammograms through Foundation funding,
can participate in this clinic.

H
eartSaver continues its mission to place
AEDs throughout the Tri-State by placing
an automated external defibrillator at Highland
Elementary School. Funding was provided
through a family’s donation.
Because of this generous gift, children, staff,
and families will have a life-saving AED on site
in the event any cardiac emergency might take
place during school hours or a special event.
