Texas claims one of the largest veteran populations in the
country. Our service members – active and retired – may
choose from dozens of license plates honoring their
commitment and sacrifice. The first military license
plate in Texas was established for Disabled Veterans
in 1972. Since then, Texas license plates related to the
U.S. Armed Forces have increased dramatically, with
plates commemorating each service branch, major
events beginning with Pearl Harbor and World War II, and
meritorious medal awards among other options.
For relatives of veterans, the TxDMV offers the “Gold
Star” series for spouses, mothers, fathers and family,
and a plate specifically for the “Surviving Spouse of a
Disabled Veteran.” Additionally, a surviving spouse of
a veteran may opt to retain their spouse’s previously
issued military plate (except for the “DV” plate) for one
vehicle if they remain unmarried.
These military plates are offered at no extra charge, or
for a significantly reduced plate fee that incorporates
the standard registration fee.
