“
As an artist, I had thought that time spent engaged solely in the
creation of works of art, unencumbered by the necessities of
daily life, would be beneficial. That I would be in the stimulating
company of the other Fellows, as well as being situated in a spot
of great natural beauty would only be more conducive to creative
work. I went with certain expectations, and to my surprise and
delight, those expectations were merely a shadow of the actual
experience. Frankly, I could not have had a better residency.
”
Put simply, it was perfect.

THE BOGLIASCO
F O U N D AT I O N
was created as a non-profit operating
foundation in 1991 with the sole mission
of running the Liguria Study Center for
the Arts and Humanities. The Liguria
Study Center, which is located on the
Italian Riviera in the village of Bogliasco,
provides residential fellowships for
qualified persons working on advanced
creative or scholarly projects in the arts
and humanities. The Study Center is one
of the few residential institutions in the
world dedicated exclusively to all of the
humanistic disciplines. Since its inception,
the Study Center has hosted more than
500 Fellows from 37 countries.

On behalf of the Bogliasco Foundation’s Board of Trustees,
it is my pleasure to present our 2008 Annual Report. For those of you who are
learning about the Foundation for the first time by reading this document, I
welcome your interest. The Foundation was created nearly twenty years ago
to operate the Liguria Study Center for the Arts and Humanities located in
Bogliasco, Italy. It has been nearly 15 years since the Study Center opened its
doors to the first Fellows. As I look back over the years, I feel a deep sense of
gratitude and satisfaction to have been able to witness the effect that the gift
of time and space has had on the international and profoundly gifted artists and humanists who
have become Bogliasco Fellows.
In this document you will find statistics on the 2008 Bogliasco Fellows, our financial statement,
lists of our generous supporters, and additional information about our Fellowship program. As
I write this report, the Foundation has undergone a period of transition and growth, expanding
our Board of Trustees and seeking support from an ever growing number of friends. We have
updated our website to include a directory of Fellows and information on supporting the
Foundation, including the ability to make a donation online. BF News, our online newsletter,
is now emailed to our Fellows and friends three times a year. I encourage anyone who has not
done so to visit the Foundation’s website at www.bfny.org to learn more about us.
It is an honor to work with the good people who serve on our staff in Italy and the United
States. In addition, it is a privilege to be able to call upon the expertise of over 100 volunteers
in countries around the world who carefully review our Fellowship applications as members of
our Fellowship Advisory Committee. Without their steadfast commitment and vision, the Liguria
Study Center for the Arts and Humanities simply would not continue to exist. Most important,
perhaps, the Foundation would not exist without the tremendous generosity of those who
provide the crucial financial support that enables us to welcome our Fellows year after year.
To all of you who have helped us along the way, you have my unending gratitude.
With best wishes,
James Harrison
President

not be able to afford the cost of travel to and from Genoa. We recognize and thank the key partners who

This was truly the essence of the Bogliasco experience: the
opportunity to learn from other specialists who come from
a number of different fields and disciplines. The fact that all
the members of the group were open to new ideas; extremely
knowledgeable and passionate about their work – and willing
to talk about their work – made for an extremely enjoyable stay,

EVENTS IN ITALY
The Bogliasco Foundation participated in the 2008 edition of the NIME (New Interface for Musical
Expressions) conference with a video-sound installation by Jeff Talman (‘07). The event was held in Genoa
from June 4 to June 7. We wish to thank the conference’s staff as well as Casa Paganini, the Museo di Arte
Contemporanea di Villa Croce and the Regione Liguria for their hospitality and support.
The Bogliasco Foundation worked with Genoa’s Chamber of Commerce, Duferco Italia Holding, Premuda
and Sirce to publish an exhibition catalog, Sirotti, Giardini 1958-2008. The paintings of Raimondo Sirotti
were part of a larger exhibition of works by Van Gogh at the Museo di Santa Giulia in Brescia.
Also in 2008, the Bogliasco Foundation facilitated the participation of two of its Fellows in Genoa’s Festival
Internazionale della Scienza: Jeff Talman (‘07) exhibited his sound installation A Play of Flows. We would
like to thank the Festival della Scienza, the Associazione Amici del Festival, F.lli Perelli, Electroimpianti di
A.Maggio, Piccole Pesti and Impresa Edilservizi di Geom.G.L.Termanini for their support. Our deepest
thanks also go to Viana Conti who contributed to the text.
Alexander Hahn (‘97, ‘06) exhibited his interactive video installation and digital prints Luminous Point. We
wish to thank the Museo di Villa Croce, Genoa’s Swiss Consulate General, the Federal Office of Culture,
Prohelvetia, the NYSCA and ETC for their support. We also wish to thank the Museo di Villa Croce for its
hospitality; Viana Conti for her contribution to the text; and Rosy Filippone for the installation’s furnishings.
From December 5 through 21 of
2008, the Foundation facilitated the
exhibition Il Milione di Marco Polo by
Mario Fallini (‘04) which took place
at the Palazzo San Giorgio in Genoa.
We would like to thank Genoa’s Port
Authority for its hospitality. We are
also grateful to Bolla srl, Palazzo del
Monferrato, the Fondazione Cassa
di Risparmio di Alessandria and the
Provincia di Alessandria for their
contributions to the event.

In order to sustain its mission,
the Bogliasco Foundation relies on the generosity of individuals and
organizations whose names appear on the following pages. In 2008,
despite the economic crisis, the Bogliasco Foundation raised more
money from donors in the United States and European countries
than ever before. It is with profound gratitude that we recognize the
friends listed on the following pages for their extraordinary support.
SO C I ETÀ D I A M I C I
Donors who contribute a gift of $1,000 or more are considered members of the Bogliasco Foundation’s
Società di Amici, which offers the opportunity to meet performing and visual artists, writers and humanists
and to become more involved with the Foundation and Study Center.

Our group of Fellows was a fine balance
