Silent Auction - Cathedral High School
30th Annual Cathedral Shamrauction
“The Cathedral
Experience”
Saturday, February 24, 2007
From the office of the President
Stephen J. Helmich
Dear Friend of Cathedral,
On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of Cathedral High School, thank you for attending our 2007
Shamrauction!
We are proud of this school and we are proud of the accomplishments of everyone who comes up the hill to
this campus each school day. In the classroom, on the athletic field, on the stage, in band and choral
competitions, on the Brain Game, in robotics competitions and in hundreds of other areas, our young people
achieve great things.
This school has a remarkable history and we look back to the founding of the school in 1918 and can trace so
many consistent themes to the present day. The school was founded on the Catholic faith and this continues
today. The school provided an outstanding educational experience and Cathedral is known, today, as one of
the very fine private schools in this part of the country. The school, from her beginnings, expected a pursuit of
excellence in all things from faculty, staff and students and the crossbar is set very high today for all connected
with the school. Our students and their adult leaders win state championships in athletics; produce
extraordinary works on the stage, and win band competitions and so much more. And, of course, there has
always been a very strong commitment to diversity at this school.
Your attendance at tonight’s Shamrauction helps ensure that this pursuit of diversity will continue into the
future. Over one third of our students and their families receive need-based financial assistance to support
their presence at this school. Without this support, the face of the school would be very different and we
would not provide the same quality of learning and growing experience that has been offered for so many
years.
All of the proceeds from this event go to support our need-based financial aid program so please know that
every dollar you spend will directly impact the life of one of our very talented students.
An event of this magnitude requires a full year of planning and execution and requires great leadership. We all
owe a debt of gratitude to Ginny Casey and Tom Zupancic who serve as co-chairs for this year’s
Shamrauction. Ginny and Tom have committed hundreds of hours and have brought together a very special
team of men and women to produce this night for all of us.
We are so pleased you have chosen to join us for this celebration that brings the Cathedral Family together. We
hope you have a memorable time as we all join together to share “The Cathedral Experience.”
Sincerely,
Stephen J. Helmich

A very special "Thank You" to all of our past chairpeople. The
"Cathedral Family" appreciates your time, energy, leadership and
enthusiasm over the past 29 years. You have brought about the
development of the school's most successful fundraiser and for
this we will always be grateful.

Shamrauction Acknowledgements
Many have donated an immense amount of time and effort over the past year to insure the success
of this year's Shamrauction. Without the dedication of these individuals and the students of Cathedral
to this charitable event, none of this would have been possible. We would like to offer our gratitude
to the individuals listed below:
First and foremost, Stephen J. Helmich, the President of Cathedral, David L. Worland, the
Principal of Cathedral and John L. Davis, Chairman of the Board for their endless cooperation
and support.
Jenny Matthews, the Executive Director, for her counsel, knowledge, dedication and patience what would we do without her? She has made our job fun, the rewards unlimited and our
appreciation for the mission of the Shamrauction even deeper. We are honored to have
worked at your side.
Pat Jacoby, Tricia Theisen and Michelle Daley for their tireless efforts and positive approach
each and every year for this special event as well as their outstanding staff of solicitors who
worked endlessly collecting the fantastic array of donations this evening.
Kathi Mournighan and Jan Baele and the entire Production staff for their countless hours
spent creating “The Cathedral Experience.”
Our Auctioneer, Vince White and his staff, whose services are greatly appreciated this evening.
Cathedral High School’s Mothers’ Club, Cathedral High School Alumni Association and the
Cathedral High School student body who together form an unbeatable network.
A big thank you to MCS Convention Services for their help in transforming our school into
this "Irish" evening.
Jug Eckert of Jugs Catering for his help and talent in preparation of the Shamrauction dinner
and breakfast.
Lisa and Tom Ford and their crew of students for their remarkable assistance in the dining
room.
A toast to Brett & Gail French Pheffer, Monarch Beverage, Keith Petraskas and Olinger
Distributors for their generosity and effort in obtaining the alcoholic beverage donations for
this evening's event.
Thanks to Bill Elliott and his crew for organizing all the bars for this evening.
Art and Ann Berkemeier for their fantastic efforts in organizing and coordinating the Silent
Auction.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Branigan for their gifted supervision of the Reverse Raffle.
Rita O'Malia, Rosie Houk, Glendys Moosbrugger for their adept control of our inventory.

1910 EXPO UNIVERSELLES
BRUXELLES. 24 x 36 – Hand Numbered
F-6002
Limited Edition - by Henri Cassiers. A
breathtaking bird’s eye view of Brussels’ Grand
Place during the World’s Fair there in 1910.
A fine bird’s eye view of Brussels’ Grand
Place, with color provided by flags flowing
from the balloon above it as well as the flowers
below. There are at least three known versions
of the poster: one promoting travel by the
Belgian State Railways, one advocating the
travel benefits of the French Northern rail
system and this one, whose belief in the
exposition - and the vertiginous artwork - was
so strong that it took the stance of, If you
promote it, they will come. The original poster
sold at auction for $2,500.
CANADIAN PACIFIC ORIENT LINE
POSTER. 24 x 36 - by anonymous Hand
Numbered/Limited Edition! -Oceanliner makes
its way into the harbor. Canadian Pacific
Railway (CPR) was incorporated on February
16, 1881. Less than five years later a ribbon of
steel united Canada when the line to the Pacific
coast was completed with the driving of the
‘Last Spike’ at Craigellachie, British Columbia,
on November 7, 1885. By the 1920s, CPR had
become known as the ‘World’s Greatest Travel
System’. That slogan helped CPR promote its
renowned transcontinental passenger trains, a
chain of luxury hotels and a fleet of steamships.
Since its beginnings, CPR commissioned many
well-known artists and even went so far as to
build an in-house team of graphic artists and
printers to illustrate the company’s vast empire.
As a result, Canadian Pacific made a significant
contribution to the art of poster design. Today,
CPR operates on about 14,000 miles of rail
lines in Canada and the United States and is
among the largest freight railways in North
America. The original poster sold at auction for
$1,500.

SUN VALLEY IDAHO SNOW SKI POSTER.
24 x 36 – Hand Numbered/Limited Edition!
F-6006
Sun Valley was the brainchild of W.˜Averell
Harriman, chief executive of the Union
Pacific Railroad and future governor of New
York.˜ The businessman in Harriman was
looking for way to build passenger traffic to the
West, and the avid skier in him wanted a venue
that evoked the old world charm of the Swiss
and Austrian Alps. To these ends he
commissioned a young count, Felix Schaffgotsch
to scour the country for the perfect site, and in
1936 (after the likes of Aspen, Yosemite and Mt.
Rainier were passed up) Ketchum was
“”discovered””. In just 7 months and at a cost of
$1.5 million, four-story lodge was constructed
on the former Brass Ranch lands, and ski runs
were created on Dollar and Proctor Mountains.˜
(Bald Mountain wasn’t even part of the original
plans, as it was beyond the ski technology of the
1930’s.˜ Compare the current vertical drop of
Baldy’s runs at 3,400 feet with Dollar’s 628
feet.)

OIL PAINTING BY FRAN
BEAUREGARD. This stunning oil painting is
beautifully done with the hues of color and
scenery. The antique gold frame sets it apart
from all others. The scene is of steps with
urns full of greenery and old world
architecture.
BENEDICTINE. 24 x 36 – Hand
Painted/Limited Edition! This liqueur, an
elixir concocted by the monks of the
Fecamp Abbey by combining local wine,
native herbs, and imported ingredients such
as ginger and cardamom - a secret blend
they maintained for three centuries - is
given a sophisticated delivery by Sem,
clearly putting forth the idea that fine spirits
aren’t just for the clergy anymore, but
anyone with a properly refined palette. The
career of caricaturist Sem started modestly
enough in his home town of Perigueux
where he published his first collection of
local celebrities’ portraits in 1895. Only
after doing the same for Bordeaux in 1897
and Marseilles in 1898 did he venture to
Paris where he charmed the city folk with
his talent. Hardly anyone of note escaped
being captured for posterity. The original
poster sold at auction for $6,000.
