From the
SUPERINTENDENT’S DESK
By Ken Halverson
In this final commentary of the year, I believe it is only proper that I reach out to as many patrons as
possible in an effort to clarify concerns that may be on your minds regarding our district’s levy election on
May 3rd. First let me emphasize that our Board chose this course of action because as of this date, we still
have no idea what will be forthcoming from the State during the next biennium. This levy request will serve to
maintain the same General Fund budget amount for our high school in 2011-2012 as we have budgeted for this
year. It is needed due to a decrease in student enrollment along with the discontinuance of consolidation
incentive funding. Our Board has taken steps each year since the consolidation by slightly decreasing our
general fund budget each year.
The chart below documents what I believe has been responsible action in providing necessary
educational offerings even while reducing the number of staff at our high school. As has been the case in the
past, the district will not collect the entire amount voted should legislative action generate an increase in State
funding.
High School General Fund Budget
2005-2006
$1,031,178.85
2006-2007
$1,056,879.27
2007-2008
$1,031,062.34
2008-2009
$958,275.36
2009-2010
$958,275.36
2010-2011
$871,976.24
Proposed 2011-2012
$871,976.24
Decreased since 2005-2006
$159,202.61
[Please Note: Another levy for our elementary budget was not necessary because our enrollment has increased
enough to maintain our previous year’s level of funding.]
Our next Board Meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, May 17th at 8:30 PM in the conference room in
Rudyard. Items on the agenda will include recent incoming and outgoing communications, pertinent personnel
and instructional concerns, policy addition regarding firearms & weapons on district property, canvassing
election results, reorganizing the Board which will entail the appointment of one trustee for one year, and
appointing two trustees to its Transportation Committee.

On April 7th the fifth grade class went to the
Hill County Fairgrounds to participate in a
conservation workshop.
They had set up
stations and we rotated to each one. The
stations were about erosion, trees, wool, furs,
and wind breaks. We learned some interesting
and valuable information. Thank you to Mr.
Watson for driving them.
The fifth grade class has entered a couple
of poster contests. We entered the Hill County
Electric’s Bobblehead Willie contest.
This
contest was about what students would miss
without electricity. We had no winners but the
students had some really good drawings. The
second poster contest was a 5th grade only
contest. This contest was through the Fish,
Wildlife and Parks. The theme was “Montana
State Parks: Where Camping is Fun!” We had to
investigate the 25 state parks that offer
camping and select one to show how much
fun camping can be. Hali Kapperud took 3rd
place. She won a backpack and magazine. A
copy of the poster is on display by the 5th grade
door in the elementary.
From April 13 through May 13 the
elementary students are involved in Bikes for
Books. For every 20 minutes read, they fill out a
coupon which will be in a drawing for a
coupon for a free bicycle. The Bikes for Books is
sponsored by the Havre Masonic Lodge.
Dylan Miller won the WIFE poster contest for
the 5th grade and his winning picture will be
featured on the cover of the calendars that are
due to come out in November. This contest is in
conjunction with National Ag Week and
students draw about their interests in farm
life. He received a cash prize. If you would like
to order one of the $2.00 calendars, please
contact Dylan Miller.
On May 13th the fourth and fifth graders are
invited to Hill County Electric for a workshop
about electricity. We will be going to learn
more about safety and the usage of it.
We have 11 of 16 sixth graders out for track
this season. Good Luck to them.

Knight of the Month for March —
Bridjour Han
Squire of the Month for March —
Mackenzie Hansen
Bridjour Han has been a very
underappreciated member
of the North Star student
body. She volunteers her time
to do everything from Relay
for Life to Saturday Morning
Basketball to Blood Drives.
She is participating in
volleyball, basketball and
track. Bridj was a captain for
both basketball & volleyball. She has been a
hard worker in the classroom over the past four
years. This is a well deserved recognition for her.
Congrats Bridj. Nice hustle.
Bridjour is the
daughter of Don and Jaye Han of Rudyard. By:
Mr. Brian Campbell
I’m always excited when a
student asks me to write
something about them, so
when Mackenzie came
asking I was thrilled! Where
do I start to describe
Mackenzie? She has a terrific
attitude in class, a great
sense of humor and winning
smile.
Mackenzie goes
above and beyond in her assignments, and
displays a real flair when it concerns her
creative journaling. She is a leader in class and
is not afraid to state her opinion or ask
questions. She is always willing to help others.
Mackenzie seems to excel in everything she
does, including athletics. Mackenzie is a force
to be reckoned with on any playing field.
Congratulations and keep up the good work,
Mackenzie! Mackenzie is the daughter of Todd
and Angie Hansen of Gildford. By: Miss Linda

North Star Pen-Pals _______________
By: Kiera Miller
This year, Mrs. Wolery’s 7th and 9th grade
computer classes have been exchanging
letters with Mrs. Donoven’s 1st and 2nd grade
classes. These letters have been a great project
because the Elementary, Jr. High and High
School students have gotten to know one
another, creating friendships between our
schools. The pen-pals hope to meet each other
before the end of the school year!

MCTM Math Contest Results ________
Glass Blowing ___________________
Attending this year’s Montana Council of
Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) Regional
Math Contest at Havre High on March 31 with
Mr. Campbell and Mrs. Wolery were 43 North
Star students. Students who attended the math
meet took 3 math tests at a specific grade level
and competed amongst over 500 other
students.
Representing North Star and proving
mastery in mathematics were 21 students who
earned superiors and/or honorable mentions
(49% of those that attended). A superior is the
highest rating, with honorable mention and
participant following in that order. To have
received a superior rating on a test, a student’s
test score must have been in the top 15%.
Those receiving honorable mentions scored in
the top 16 – 35%. Students who attended, but
are not listed, received only Participant Awards
on all three tests.
Students receiving superiors (S) and
honorable mentions (HM) are listed below: (the
number that follows the letter represents the
number of tests). Seniors: Wendy White (HM-1),
Juniors: Jordy Donoven (HM-1), Calvin Vaughn
(S-1, HM-2), and Taylor Warren (S-1).
Sophomores: Caleb Vaughn (S-2), Freshman:
Sierra Yanny (HM-1). 8th graders: Christopher
Lavery (S-1) and Thatcher Smith (S-3).
7th
graders: Matt Helmbrecht (HM-1), Cody Beck
(HM-1), and Samantha Pester (HM-1).
These individual test scores are then
compiled by the State MCTM where they
compare the scores/results from other contests
across the state.
Excellent work North Star math students and
congratulations!

North Star art students once again were in
attendance at the annual glass blowing
workshop held in Box Elder in April. The students
learned about one of the first forms of art under
the tutelage of Mr. Tom Marinkovich, the art
instructor in Box Elder. From punty to annealer,
the process of how to create a work of art
without every touching it with your hands,
appears easier than it actually is. The new
attendees found out that the art takes the
ability to withstand excessive heat (2000
degrees +) and is an extremely physical
endeavor. Gallons of water went into these
students and poured out in the form of sweat.
In the end, some beautiful pieces were created
and brought back to the school for display. In
addition to five North Star students, they were
also accompanied by three students from the
Gildford Colony, escorted by Mrs. Laurie
Chvilicek.
Phone Book Recycling ____________
If you have no further use of your old
phone books, please consider sending them to
either the elementary school or high school for
recycling. North Star FCCLA uses the funds
gained from this project to help sponsor
member trips to state and national
competitions. Thank you in advance for your
help with our “green” project. If you have any
questions, please contact Margie Chinadle at
355-4481.

Business Program Receives
Curriculum Grant _________________
Juniors, Seniors Score Well on
MUSWA_________________________
North Star’s Business program was selected
to receive an H & R Block Dollars & Sense
curriculum grant. The grant was applied for by
Mrs. Wolery in early March and our school was
one of the 250 selected to receive the
curriculum.
The business program will be receiving
Virtual Business® - Personal Finance interactive
software and lesson plans that cover 18 realworld topics, such as managing a budget,
handling taxes, avoiding credit card debt,
saving and investing. This grant provides North
Star’s business classes with unlimited use of the
software for four academic years.
Every spring, juniors are required to take a
writing assessment known as the Montana
University Writing Assessment (MUSWA). Their
paper is graded on organization, sentence
fluency,
conventions
(grammar),
and
development. Scoring a 3.5, out of a total of
six, or higher, allows these students to enroll in
an English composition course in a Montana
university. If they do not achieve this score
before graduating from high school, they must
take a remedial college course before taking
their general English requirements.
This year all eleven juniors and the five
seniors who participated in the MUSWA passed
with a 3.5 or higher. “I’m thrilled,” remarked
English teacher, Mrs. Schnittgen. “Never before
have all of my students passed this assessment.
These kids were prepared and knocked it out of
the park.” Among the students, there were two
who received a high score of 5: Karston
Donoven
and
Jordy
Donoven.
Congratulations!
