VHS Band are State Champs! District Identifies

named 2A/1A State Champions on May 10, 2012
at the State Band Festival held at the Oregon
State University campus.

Funding to Complete
Construction
ODE grant moves new school
closer to completion

It looks like the
Vernonia School District 47J
has found the missing puzzle
piece and identified a source
of funding that can be used
to take another step toward
closing the funding gap and
complete construction of their
new K-12 campus.
Following
a
conversation on April 16
with Ed Dennis, Deputy
Superintendent of Public
Instruction for the Oregon
Department of Education
(ODE), the District was
notified in writing that they
can anticipate receiving what
is called a Facility Grant from
the ODE. The grant could be
for as much as $2 million.
The ODE Facility
Grants are provided by the
Oregon State Legislature to
help school districts with costs
to increase classroom space. The Legislature allocates $25
million each biennium to help
pay for shortfalls in expenses
for new school projects. The
grant is paid out to qualifying
projects after a new facility
has been open for a half year. Eligible school districts can
receive 8% of the total cost of
the projects; if eligible projects
statewide exceed the funds
available in the grant pool,
then the funds are prorated

Columbia County
Commissioners Head
to November Run-off
There will be another election for Columbia County
Commissioners in November.
Neither incumbent Tony Hyde nor Earl Fisher could
secure more than fifty percent of the vote in the March 15th
primary, forcing a run-off election on November 6, 2012 in the
newly non-partisan races.
Hyde, running for re-election for position one, received
46. 38 percent of the vote. He will face Tammy Maygra who
finished second with 29.22 percent of the vote. James Gibson
received 20.24 percent and Reginald Ward received 3.77 percent
of the vote for Position 3.
Fisher who is also running for re-election for Position
1, received 28.39 percent of the vote, finishing ahead of Wayne
Mayo, who he will face in November. Mayo received 23.8
percent to take second place. Terry Luttrell received 18 percent;
Colleen DeShazer received 16.69 percent; and Brady Preheim
received 12.91 percent of the votes for Position 1.
Vernonia Golf Club Has New Ownership
Zavales brothers hope to make positive changes to local landmark
The Vernonia Golf Club has
been in existence since 1928. And
now it has new, local ownership.
Nick and Bob Zavales, two
brothers who grew up at the club,
took over ownership on May 1, 2012
and are hoping to make some changes
and breathe new life into the facility.

Lawyer for Kay Says They Will Sue Vernonians
The lawyer representing former
Vernonia Police officer Michael Kay
says she intends to add several names to
a notice of Tort Claim.
In a letter addressed to the
City of Vernonia and Mayor Josette
Mitchell dated April 14, 2012, Michelle
R. Burrows, attorney for Kay, states that
they are amending their earlier notice
of Tort Claim to include the following
individuals: Vernonia City Councilor
Randy Parrow, Jim Tierney, former
Vernonia City Councilors Brett Costley
and Shirlee Daughtry, former Vernonia
Police Chief Matt Workman, Linda
Graf, former Interim Vernonia City
Administrator Jim Johnson, Vernonia
City Recorder Joann Glass, Vernonia
City Attorney Alex Sosnkowski and
Mitchell. “An explanation of their
involvement in the termination and
destruction of Michael Kay will be
forthcoming in a complaint we are now
drafting to be filed in the United States
District Court, Portland Division,” states
the letter. Costley, Daughtry, Graf and
Glass’s names were all misspelled in the
letter.
Notably absent from the list are
former Vernonia City Councilors Kevin
Hudson, Willow Burch and Marilyn
Nicks. Both Burch and Nicks were on
the City Council and voted to terminate
Kay’s employment in June of 2011.
VRFPD Graduates Eight
from Explorer Program
Burrows sent the original notice
of Tort Claim to the City of Vernonia on
November 4, 2011. Burrows April 14 letter goes on
to state: “We have uncovered enormous
irregularities in public finance, public
meetings and land use regulations
within your city—some of which may
be connected to actions taken against
Kay and some are simply inexplicable.” The letter states that Burrows intends
to call for an investigation into these
issues and the involvement of Columbia
County Commissioner Tony Hyde,
State Senator Betsy Johnson, Bud
Dow, Sharon Bernal, Mitchell and her

Vernonia Ballet’s Wizard of OZ
This will be one of the last performances
at Washington Grade School
Jessica Davis has some very
fond memories of performing on the
Washington Grade School stage. In fact,
she performed in her very first ballet on
that stage.
Many years later, as the Vernonia
community prepares to say farewell to
WGS, Davis will be on that stage one final
time before the old building is demolished in July. Davis, who runs the Vernonia
Ballet, will produce The Wizard of Oz
on Friday June 1st at 7:00 PM. The
performance will highlight many young
dancers, several who Davis says she has
been working with since they were very
young girls. The show will feature all
your favorite characters from the story,
including Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin
Man and Cowardly Lion, Toto and of
course, the Wizard. There will also be
naughty monkeys, munchkins, poppies
and a tornado dance. Davis will take to the WGS stage
one final time and play the Wicked Witch of the West.
“When I was in third grade and
I had just started taking ballet lessons,
we performed the Nutcracker at school,”
says Davis remembering one of her first
appearances on the WGS stage. “I had
only been taking ballet for about four
months and the girl who had the lead part
in the school play got sick the day before
the performance. So I filled in for her and
danced the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy. So my first ballet performance was on the
WGS stage!”
It’s very sad that it will be gone,”
says Davis about WGS. “There are a
lot of memories for a lot of people. My
Grandma went to school there.”
Davis is already planning for
next year. The spring performance will
be Charlie and Chocolate Factory and
Davis has devised a raffle for a “Golden
Ticket”-- the winner will receive one free
year of ballet lessons. Chances to win
the Golden Ticket will be available at the
upcoming performance of The Wizard of
Oz. This winter Davis says the Vernonia
Ballet will perform Carnival of the
Animals, instead of the Nutcracker.

2012 4-H Summer Camp
The 4-H Camp committee is
busy working on making the 2012 camp
another great experience for those who
attend. The committee has selected June
17-20, 2012 for the annual 4-H Summer
Camp, held at Camp Kiwanilong on the
North Coast.

approved an application submitted
by Wauna Federal Credit Union to
offer membership to the residents
of Pacific County, Washington. The
Credit Union current primary field
of membership includes Clatsop and
Columbia Counties in Oregon. “We are very pleased to
extend the benefits and services
of Wauna Federal Credit Union to
the residents of Pacific County,”
reported CEO & President Robert
Blumberg, during a recent address to
the membership. “While our regular
field of membership has been limited
to Clatsop and Columbia Counties
(Oregon), a large and growing number
of Pacific County residents make
the short drive to Astoria and nearby
communities to work, shop, and
enjoy entertainment. Our three local
branches and electronic services offer
tremendous convenience to them and
their families.”
Gaining approval from the
NCUA to expand a credit union’s field of
membership is no simple process. The
Credit Union had to first demonstrate
its financial soundness and ability
to serve an additional geographic
territory, plus present a written,
detailed plan to outline the resources
that would be used to effectively serve
Pacific County. “These included an
advertising strategy, public relations
and community outreach, and targeting
specific segments of the population
who may not be served by other
financial institutions,” says Blumberg.
“Our management team and the board
of directors conducted significant
research and analysis to prepare our
plan.”
One of the first objectives
of the Pacific County plan is to
provide low-cost loans to residents,
business owners, and legal entities,
including auto, home, credit card,
and commercial loans. “Providing
affordable loans to our members is one
of our primary objectives, especially
during the continuing sluggish
economy and high unemployment
period,” states Blumberg. “We know
many families and businesses on both
sides of the River could benefit from
this needed financial support.” Blumberg does state there are
no current plans to build a branch in
Pacific County. “Just like any other
region of our geographic field of
membership, we will monitor member
growth and activity before discussing
branch plans. We do feel our three local
branches in Astoria and Warrention,
plus our electronic services, can be
just as convenient as a physical branch

Happy Trails: A Report From the Rodeo Road

Hello again!
Miss Rodeo America Inc. is

I made trips to the eastern side of the
United States to visit their headquarters,
see how their products are made, and
most importantly, thank them for their

organization.
I began the month with a trip to
Dunnville, Kentucky to visit Tarter
Farm and Ranch. We toured the plants
where Tarter manufacturers their
farm equipment; learning how their
galvanized tanks, tractor attachments,

made. Being able to see what goes on
behind the scenes, meeting many of the
employees, and spending time with the
Tarter family was wonderful; they really

On Monday (that would be April 30th), I was
walking down to the Logger Dome on the Vernonia
High School campus for a very important assembly. This Assembly was special because on that day, all of
the VHS student council candidates were to present a
speech of up to five minutes in length. I was one of
those hopefuls, running for the office of foreign exchange representative.
In VHS, the foreign exchange rep is the student
council member that, of course, works directly with the
foreign exchange students, making them feel welcome
and helping them to fit in here in VHS. My confidence that I would make a great
speech was buoyed by the success of my speech last
year, which won me the office of Fire Marshall. Still,
I was nervous (who wouldn’t be) for many reasons. First, I was going to speak directly to my peers, alone. Second, I was afraid of being defeated in the election
by my opponent. Thirdly, my opponent happened to
be a good friend of mine, the very same student who
contested me for the office of Fire Marshall last year.
Unfortunately I was not the first to go on, which
didn’t help my already high nerves--I had two candidates’ speeches to think about my situation and what I
was about to get myself into. I was the latest applicant
for student council, having received and handed in my
petition the Wednesday before. My campaign signs
had gone up only a day after that, giving my peers only
one other school day and not ample enough time to take notice of the signs with all the flags on them saying “go
world!” in big, fancy fonts and foreign languages. My
time of 11.2. Casale was also part of
the record breaking 4x400 relay team,
along with Jiranek, Nathan Fleck and
Jacob Stevens. They set the record with
a time of 3:35 seconds. Casale also won
the 200 meter dash and will compete at
the state meet in that event as well, along
with teammate Stevens. Sullivan also
qualified for state in the long jump.

Fleck brought home three medals from
the meet in three events, including gold
in the 800 meters. Fleck took second
in the 1500 meters and won gold in the
4x400 relay. Fleck will compete in all
three events at state. Lea Wilson heads to state
after a first place finish in the shot put. Stephanie Castro also qualified for state
in the shot put. Samantha Lindauer will compete
at the state meet in the 400 meters;
Dezi Roberts qualified in the high jump
and the 4x100 relay team of Meghan
Sullivan, Lindauer, Julie Zhunossova,
and Kim Allen also qualified for state.

When I got up to the podium, I had to tone my
nerves down and focus on the speech. I had included
a spot where I asked for three random audience members (not people planted there) to call out the names
of countries and then I would state some facts I knew
about them. After all the speeches were done, I would
receive congratulations on a great speech from my
peers for several days.
But it was all in vain. My opponent won, although by the narrowest of margins. I heard this from
another friend of mine during seventh period as I was
dressing down for PE. All during that period I felt anger
and sadness flowing through me. Had it not been for
that, I probably wouldn’t
have felt up to the task
of doing bench presses,
powercleans, or even the
dumbbell lunges I could do
so efficiently. I called myself a failure about twenty
times and sulked to myself. At first, I felt unappreciated. But after a talk
with a teacher, Mr. Blair, and one with my dad, I
felt a little better about it. I began to think ahead to
next year’s campaign – if
I even get that chance next
year. Dad had told me that
the state meet in our June 12 issue.
The Loggers performed extremely well,

Softball—The Vernonia Lady Loggers
ended the regular season with a 9-6
record, finishing in third place in their
league. After defeating Nestucca in their
final two regular season games on May
14 by scores of 11-9 and 15-1, the Lady
Loggers secured a place in the playoffs
and a rematch with Nestucca on May 17. The Loggers lost their first round
playoff game 10-0 against Nestucca.
Baseball—The Loggers ended their
boy’s baseball season in fifth place with
a 6-12 league record. The Loggers
dropped two key games to Nestucca 9-7
on May 8th and 7-6 on May 14 before
ending their season with an 11-4 win in
the second game of the double header
with Nestucca.

how I will try to rise from the ashes of defeat next year
(if I am able to), and by now, the memory of my defeat
has been overshadowed by a million other things, the
latest being the VHS Band taking 1st place in state.
So how does it feel to be defeated, especially
for a major office like foreign exchange rep? Well, it
feels sad, naturally. It angers me a little bit. It all serves
as a reminder that we all get a slap in the face and a
kick in the butt sometimes, but we can always learn
from those defeats and try, try again. And besides,
just because my counterpart can officially make next
year’s foreign exchange students feel welcome, it does
not mean that I can’t also do my part in making the
exchange students feel at home in our school.

VHS Forestry Class Visits RSG Mill
The Vernonia High School
Forestry Class recently made a
field trip to the RSG—Olympic
Forest Products Mill near Mist,
OR.
According
to
class
instructor Byron Brown students
received a full tour of the mill, were able to observe every phase
of how lumber is produced and ask
lots of questions. “The people at
RGS were just great to us,” said
Brown. “They had it all set up for
us to make it a really organized
tour.” Students worked with the log scalers
and learned how to do that process. “We got
quite a bit of individual attention on that,”
said Brown. Students also spent time in the
VHS Equestrian Team District Report
The VHS Equestrian Team recently competed in their final district meet. “I was extremely pleased
with the team and proud of the outcome,” said coach Diane Benes.

Fun Pass” Available
Columbia County Rider Transportation has
begun selling the 2012 Student Summer Fun Pass
for eligible students enrolled in Columbia County
Schools. The Pass is good in all zones and routes
and allows students the opportunity to travel locally
and regionally on the CCRider System.
The cost of the Pass is $45.00 and it is
valid from June 7th through September 4th, 2012
with the cost per month at the low rate of $15 per
month. To be eligible for the pass, the student must
be attending grades 1-12 in the upcoming school
year. Students under the age of 12 will require a
little extra paperwork in order to insure the safety of

Better Parenting: What Should I Do When My Child Misbehaves?
Part 2 - For REVENGE, For HELPLESSNESS
In Part 1 we learned that kids,
like adults, need to feel accepted and that
they belong. If they become discouraged
they misbehave for attention, power, revenge or act helpless.
Last time the focus was on attention and power. Our kids know what
pushes our buttons and how to get us to
react. Let’s turn the tables and not react
the way they expect. We want them to
get their needs met in a better way… We
will now focus on when our kids use revenge and acts of helplessness to be accepted:
REVENGE
Ramona has been saving money
from her allowance for a watch for over
five months. She is surprised to see the
watch she wants is
on sale. She is $8.00
short. She took a ten
dollar bill out of her
mother’s purse and
bought the watch
she wanted. That
night her mother
discovered that she
was short ten dollars. When Ramona showed her mom
the new watch, her mom screamed at
Ramona, “Where did you get the money
for that watch?” Ramona said, “Chill
out, I know why you’re yelling at me,
I’ll pay back the money I took, so you
don’t have to yell about it.” Mom was
hurt and angry and took the watch from
Ramona and said, “I am returning the
watch and keeping the money for your
punishment for stealing from me.” Ramona screamed back, “I hate you, I wish
you were dead.”
Clues to Ramona’s goal:
1. Mom felt hurt and disrespected and wanted to get back at Ramona.
2. Mom tried to hurt Ramona by
taking her watch and keeping the money.
3. Ramona wanted to hurt mom
back by telling her she hates her and
wished her dead.
Mom knows that Ramona’s goal is to
get revenge.
What could mom do instead?
1. It can be very difficult in the
heat of the moment, but before mom reacts she could tell Ramona that she is too
angry to talk to her right then. Next, mom
could tell Ramona to
go to her room until
they both can calm
down and give Ramona a time, that day or
the next day when she
will talk to her and tell
her what she is going
to do about the money
that was taken from
her purse.
2. Mom can refuse to argue saying, “I love you too much to argue with
you.”
3. Mom then has time to calm
down, talk with someone and decide
what she will do before she talks to Ramona.
4. When mom talks to Ramona
she can say, “Help me understand what’s
going on.”
5. Changing a cycle of revenge
takes time. But Ramona won’t have a
battle if mom doesn’t
join in. This will give
them both time to
calm down and think.
6. Kids will
never handle a situation better than the
parent. Mom needs
to guide Ramona on
ways they can build
trust and respect together.
OTHER THOUGHTS If our
parents got angry and yelled, the chances are high when we become stressed or
upset we will do the same. It may not
be easy to do, but we must separate ourselves and tell the child when we will let
him or her know what we are going to
do.
ACTING HELPLESS
Winter term, Brian’s fourth
grade class is playing basketball in gym.
Brian tells his mom, “Nobody wants
me on their team.” “I don’t make baskets.” I can’t hold the ball.” Mom tried
to teach Brian and shot hoops with him
and asked his older brother to help also.
Whenever he missed a basket or loses
the ball he says, “I’ll never be good at
this.” Mom doesn’t know what else to
do. She says, “Maybe basketball is not
your game Brian.” “I’ll talk to your gym
teacher.” “You don’t have to play if you

Express.
Laura had been a member of
the Women’s Bowling League and was a
member of the “Sweet Adeline’s” Barber
Shop Singing Group.
Among her special interests
she enjoyed baking, cooking, fishing and
caring for animals. Laura was well known
for her wedding cakes in which she took
great pride and most important her family.
She was also preceded in death
by her parents, Marvin Brewer and Annie
Robbins and two brothers, James “Jim”
Brewer and Ezra “Zeke” Brewer.
Survivors include her two sons and
a daughter-in-law, Terry Buckner; and Ed
and Dawn Buckner, all of Vernonia, OR;
her three brothers and sisters-in-law, M.C.
and Laura Brewer, of Clatskanie, OR;
John and Vicki Brewer, of Vernonia, OR;
and Robert Robbins, of Washington State,
her three sisters-in-law, Billie Brewer, of
Salem, OR; Karen Brewer, of Kelso, WA
and Wilma “Willie” Brewer, of Vernonia,
OR.

She was a homemaker. Among
her special interests she enjoyed reading,
listening to music and spending time with
her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her three
children, Stephen Williams, of Yoncalla,
Oregon; Karen A. Hall, of Vernonia,
Oregon; and Robert Williams II, and his

Springfield, Oregon and Lue Barbara, of
Antigua, Guatemala.

Connie’s Fabulous Breakfasts: Fabulous breakfasts are available to the
public on Fridays for a cost of only
$3.50. The event happens at the Senior
Center (446 Bridge Street) from 7:30
to 9:00 AM each Friday. Meal price includes a beverage, too. Enter through
the side, parking lot door. What a deal!
Maple Bars available locally! Connie King, the cook at the Senior Center, is making maple bars each day. The
maple bars are available to the public,
too, and only cost $1 each. Availability is subject to quantity on hand. You
can assure yourself of a good supply
by pre-ordering them directly from
Connie by calling the Senior Center

7:00 AM-3:00 PM. Please allow one
day lead time for larger orders. The
Center’s front door opens at 9:00, but
the side parking lot door opens at 7:00.

Week Day Lunches: The Vernonia
Senior Center offers nutritious and
tasty lunches each weekday for a $4
donation for seniors over 60; cost is $5
for anyone under 60. To-go meals are
available for $5. These are available
to the public, not just Senior Citizens.
(Mealtime is noon; late arrivals may
not be served.) You can reserve your
lunch by calling by 11:15 AM, or further in advance if possible, to assist the
cooks as they prepare the day’s meals.
Meals on Wheels are available for a $4
donations for seniors over 60. Please

found in Vernonia’s Senior Center in
their Thrift Store. The retail store is
open Monday through Friday, from
9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The Thrift
Store provides funds for the Senior

during those same hours, and donated
clothes need to be clean and in good
condition so they are “sales ready”.
We are offering half off during the first
week of each month. Buy locally and

Special Days: On the last Wednesday
of the month Wauna Credit Union will
be serving ice cream. On the last Friday of the month we will serve birthday cake and ice cream to celebrate
that month’s birthdays.
Membership Dues: Another way to
support Vernonia’s Senior Center is to
pay the $15 annual membership dues.
Checks may be mailed or dropped off
at the Senior Center. Anyone 50 and
older may join.

JOHN MONROE KITCHEN was
born April 22, 1945 in Gentry, Arkansas,
John M. Kitchen
John M. Kitchen, 67, a longtime
resident of the Buxton community, died
Friday evening, May 11, 2012 at his home.
Private Cremation Rites were
held at the Hoyt Crematory in Forest
Grove, Oregon.
the son of the late Charlie Kitchen and
Launita (Hobbs) Kitchen. He was raised
and received his education in the Anderson,
California, having been a graduate of the
Class of 1963.

Upon his high school graduation
he served one enlistment in the United
States Air Force, until he received his
honorable discharge.
He was united in marriage
to Sandra Pierce on May 20, 1966 in
Carson, Nevada. They celebrated their
45th Wedding Anniversary this past May.
Following their marriage they moved to
the Buxton community in 1978, where
they have resided since.
John had worked as a truck driver
for the Interstate Trucking Company in
Wilsonville, Oregon for twenty years,
having retired in 2010.
Among his special interests he
enjoyed caring for his dog, “Ziggman” and
he had a special love
for his family life.
John was preceded in death by his
parents, Charlie and Launita Kitchen; by
his sister, Judy Kitchen and his brother,

Michael Kitchen.
Survivors include his wife,
Sandra Kitchen, of the family home
in Buxton, Oregon; his five children,
Benjamin Kitchen, of Portland, Oregon;
Christian Kitchen, of Buxton, Oregon;
Sunni Brasseur and her husband, Malcolm,
of Cornelius, Oregon; Stephanie Kitchen,
of Beaverton, Oregon; and Samantha
Kitchen, of Buxton, Oregon; and his four
siblings and their spouses, Carletta and
Pete Houtman, of Redding, California;
James and Kathy Kichen, of Anderson,
California; Tawnia and Rick Shumaker, of
Anderson, California and Shawn and Pat
Barr, of Arizona.
Also surviving are fifteen
grandchildren, one great-grandchildren
and many nieces and nephews.
