BASEL - A City Portrait
Basel – A City Portrait
Quality of life and savoir
vivre – that’s what the
city of Basel stands for.
A beautiful historic Old
Town on the borders of
the river Rhine, excellent
shopping and unlimited
leisure and recreational
facilities are appreciated by
tourists as much as by locals.
Basel Münster (Minster),
the Historical Rathaus (town
hall), as well as a number of
world-class museums, such
as the Kunstmuseum (art
museum) and Historisches
Museum (history museum),
are only a few sightseeing
highlights of Basel.
Known as the most
dynamic economic area
in Switzerland, Basel
is characterised by the
life sciences industries,
pharmaceutical companies,
cutting edge medicine
and chemical industry and
financial services, as well as
creative industries including
design and architecture.
Basel – A City Portrait
The borders of Switzerland,
France and Germany come
together at Three Countries
Corner in Basel. For this
reason, international
cosmopolitan attitudes have
always characterised the city,
which works closely together
with its neighbours in the fields
of education, culture, transport
and the environment.
What’s more, Basel is also
an international transport hub:
the EuroAirport, the Rhine
ports, rail and road, all link the
region to Europe and the world.
Back in the old town, on the
busy market square, is Basel’s
historical Rathaus (picture). This
very photogenic red building
was built during the early 16th
century and restored and
enlarged around 1900.
Basel – A City Portrait
Some 20 000 companies
take part as exhibitors at
fairs in Basel, attended
by more than 2.3 million
visitors from all over the
world. The exhibition
portfolio is highly diversified
in terms of the sectors
involved, its geographic
alignment and the exhibition
types. Especially famous is
BASELWORLD, the globally
leading show for watches
and jewellery as well as Art
Basel, targeting the art and
design market.

Known as the “three finest
days”, the Basel Carnival
starts on the Monday after
Ash Wednesday at precisely
4am with the so-called
“Morgestraich”, when all lights
in the old town are shut down
and the only light remaining
comes from the lanterns
carried by the participants.
With a command from
the drum majors, all teams
start to march and play
their instruments. The Basel
Carnival last exactly 72 hours.

Restaurant 44 Wine
Restaurant 44 Wine
In cooperation with the vineyard “Weingut zur Schwane” from the famous Franconian wine region, Swissôtel Berlin’s Restaurant
44 has recently created its own wine: a white 2011 Silvaner and a red 2009 Spätburgunder. Restaurant Manager Marco Pfeifer
and Executive Chef Danijel Kresovic worked closely with the wine-grower and, during a blind wine-tasting to choose the right
wine, amazingly chose the wine from barrel 44, fitting the restaurants name perfectly. The new wines were unveiled to guests
at an event on the hotel’s herbal garden terrace.
