Introduction
Welcome to our third annual Northeast Regional Summit “Making Northeast Ohio Communities Safer”. This year’s
theme “Getting Our Bodies and Souls Ready to Live and Work” promises to provide yet another new layer to the solid
foundation laid in previous summits as we continue to build relationships, share ideas and create possibilities where
once there were no prospects. By cultivating an interactive network of community stakeholders, offenders’ families and
friends, and ODRC staff, our regional summits have produced leading-edge enterprises and life-changing initiatives.
Together we are persistently moving forward in our department’s vision “to reduce crime in Ohio.”
Our collaborative is a powerful force creating cultural change as we provide opportunities for successful reentry
into our Ohio communities but it’s more. Together we are changing the hearts and minds of those in our supervision
as well as our home communities. We are welcoming rather than labeling and creating a climate contributing to the
development of pro-social values and behaviors which are both tangible and sustainable. The cornerstone to this
rehabilitative process is individuals accepting personal responsibility and their commitment to make those life-affirming
changes by choosing a different path.

Each of our summit workshops are designed to incorporate our successful pathways to reintegration, diagramed
above, which are the framework of our DRC reintegration centers. Since our region is working closely with all levels of
law enforcement and the judiciary in the Northeast Region’s 23 counties, last year we added a 12th pathway to include
these important partnerships with Criminal Justice Practitioners. This year, we are very excited to offer a 13th pathway
targeting the youth of Northeast Ohio.
Our mission “to reduce recidivism among those we touch” is accomplished through community support, family
interaction and staff commitment. Today is an opportunity to create new partnerships, reinforce prospects, cement
relationships, and touch the lives of broken Ohio families. We know there are pathways leading to success and together
we can guide others on their journey home.
It is an inspiration to know there are so many enthusiastic, dedicated Ohioans willing to help their neighbors; you are

Gary Mohr, Director, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction
Appointed by Governor Kasich in January 2011, Gary has over 40 years experience as a corrections
professional with a national reputation for innovative and efficient prison management. Throughout his
career, Director Mohr has served in a number of corrections leadership positions in both public and private
sectors. Under his leadership, ODRC has implemented the 3 Tier System, the Ohio Plan for Unit-Managed
Prisons, and a variety of other reform initiatives.
Harvey Reed, Director, Ohio Department of Youth Services
Appointed by Governor Kasich in March 2011, Harvey has over 37 years of experience working in Ohio’s
juvenile corrections system. He is committed to connecting youth and their families. Under his leadership,
DYS established a free transportation service for families of youth in DYS facilities, implemented a Family
Finding program, and enhanced parole services to more fully engage families.
Dr. R. A. Vernon, The Word Church
Dr. Vernon is the founder and senior pastor of The Word Church. Dr. Vernon has served over twenty-five
years in ministry and nearly two decades in the pastorate. The Word Church is a multisite ministry with
fourteen services and four campuses across Northeastern Ohio including Warrensville Heights (Main),
Downtown, East Cleveland, and Akron. Dr. Vernon is committed to continual improvement and creating
opportunities for others to improve as well.

1A Understanding and Responding to Sexual Violence
During this presentation attendees will gain an understanding of the prevalence of sexual violence and
resources available to survivors. Attendees will also learn about trauma associated with being sexually
assaulted and how to support a survivor.
Teresa Stafford, Senior Director of Advocacy and Outreach, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center
Ms. Stafford has over 20 years experience providing direct service to both offenders and victims of crime.
She is the former the Witness-Victim Coordinator for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office where she
assisted in creating the Witness Victim Unit. In addition to her current role, Ms, Stafford is the Cuyahoga
County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Coordinator, a member of the Ohio Attorney General’s
SART Training Team and Board President for Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence. Ms. Stafford provides
consultation to communities developing their Sexual Assault Response Teams and conducts training at local
police academies regarding the dynamics of sexual violence and working effectively with sexual assault
survivors.
1B Wellness in the Workplace
The presenters will cover the basics of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in today’s busy work place, with a
primary focus on health, nutrition and exercise.
Shelly Viets, Director of Nursing, ODRC Office of Correctional Healthcare,
Kevin Runyon, Infectious Disease Coordinator for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction
The ODRC Office of Correctional Healthcare consists of the Bureaus of Mental Health Services, Medical
Services, and Recovery Services. These bureaus combine to administer all medical and dental care, psychological and psychiatric services, and drug and alcohol treatment services provided to Ohio inmates.
Very recently ODRC established a new relationship with the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction
Services to assist with the delivery of services to the inmate population.
1C DOPE is For Dopes - Death or Prison Eventually
Two current inmates from the Grafton Reintegration Center will discuss their bad choices that placed them
in prison.

The inmates taking part in this presentation are part of a larger team that goes to Ohio schools to talk with
students about drugs, education and asking for help. The inmates are carefully screened for participation.
The DOPE is for Dopes program has been active for 17 years.

2A Healing Strategies after Traumatic Experiences
Yvonne Pointer’s daughter, Gloria Pointer, was brutally raped and murdered on 12/6/1984. Thirty years later
in May, 2013. an arrest was made. Her presentation will include motivational tips and strategies that will help
attendees to move past traumatic life experiences into hope and restoration. You will learn how to use that
which was meant for evil to become the catalyst for your greater good.
Yvonne Pointer, Project Director, Community Relations Board, City of Cleveland
Ms. Pointer is a nationally known Cleveland anti-violence activist, author, motivational speaker,
philanthropist and member of the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame. In 1985, she formed Positive Plus as a direct
result of the tragic event that occurred in her life. Positive Plus is an inspirational, motivational, self-help and
esteem-building organization geared toward the holistic reconstruction of lives touched by violence. Ms.
Pointer is also a co-founder of Parents Against Child Killing. She has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
The Gloria Pointer Teen Movement Initiative, founded by Anthony Tay of Ghana, supports West African youth
in obtaining an education and a healthy lifestyle. Ms. Pointer recently visited Ghana where she attended the
grand opening of the Gloria Pointer Memorial School in the village of Antonwka.
2B Prevention and Intervention – Impacting the Lives of Those Involved in Gangs and Violence
The presentation will consist of ideas for prevention relating to gang violence, neighborhood violence
and drug dealer violence. Suggestions will be given to show how to prevent “some” acts of violence in the
community by collaborating with individuals that lived that lifestyle previously. And lastly, relationships with
resources for the gang members and drug dealers is a must so that transformation can begin.
Thell Robinson III, CEO, A Thug Is A Dud (A.T.I.A.D.)
Mr. Robinson has worked as a Community Intervention Worker in Columbus, Ohio for several years. He
has mentored at-risk youth and resolved conflicts which seeks to cease violence in several communities
in Central Ohio. In 2011, Mr. Robinson founded Cashmere Publications. He published the novel Goin’ Hard
which is based on his life. Cashmere Publications is now a Minority Business Enterprise. While leading
young adult classes and facilitating workshops and curriculums, Mr. Robinson bridges the relationship with
many at-risk youth by providing vivid accounts of his life as he battled to become a better individual.
2C ODRC Anti-bullying Initiative
The issue of bullying has been talked about extensively and the evidence of its damaging impact can
be seen in every school and community in the country. Despite this attention there has been limited
programming that has been determined to be effective. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and
Correction (ODRC) has an opportunity to address the negative behavior of those who chose to bully others.
This presentation will provide you the outcomes of ODRC Anti-bullying Initiative to help you combat bullying
in your school and community.
Kathleen Nichols, Program Administrator 2 at the Corrections Training Academy in Orient, Ohio
Ms. Nichols is a Licensed Social Worker and obtained her Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University
in Public Policy and Management. She has an extensive background working in the area of Youth Violence
Prevention and spent 7 years providing consultation and awareness about Anti-bullying in Ohio schools and
communities while working at the Office of the Ohio Attorney General.

3A Remedies to Help Those with Criminal Convictions: Sealings, CQEs and Pardons
The presentation will discuss the remedies available under the law to help those with criminal convictions
who are trying to find employment. The Certificate of Qualification for Employment (CQE) was created
in Senate Bill 337 which became effective on September 29, 2012. The CQE allows people living in the
community who have a previous felony or misdemeanor conviction to apply to the court to lift the collateral
sanction that bars them from being considered for employment in a particular field.
Joann Sahl, Associate Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Akron School of Law
Joann Sahl is the director of the Reentry Clinics, at which Ms. Sahl and law school students assist members
of the greater Akron community with understanding their eligibility for various legal remedies under Ohio
Law. Prior to joining Akron Law, she served as a staff attorney in the housing unit of Community Legal
Aid Services, Inc. in Akron, Ohio. In that role she represented clients in housing cases and expungement
cases including appearances at court and before administrative agencies. Before that, Ms. Sahl served as
assistant state public defender at the Ohio Public Defender Commission, eventually rising to chief appellate
counsel and supervisor of the Death Penalty section.
3B Youth VOICE: Youth Respond to Today’s Reality
A panel of MyCom youth – both current and alumni - will speak about their involvement with MyCom
programs and the opportunities that have opened for them as a result. They will share how they have used
(and continue to use) their voices to advocate in and for their communities.
Donte Gibbs, MyCom Intermediary Team Program Officer for Youth Engagement
Nancy Baxter, MyCom Intermediary Team Program Officer for Neighborhood Engagement, moderators
Mr. Gibbs and Ms. Baxter are program officers for MyCom. The MyCom network connects Greater
Cleveland’s young people with high-quality, neighborhood based programs and services that provide
engaging, educational and affordable opportunities in a safe and supportive environment helping them to
grow, thrive and reach their true potential. MyCom was created by the Cleveland Foundation and Cuyahoga
County in collaboration with other partners in 2008.
3C Understanding the Impact of Prison Visits on the Family
The presenters will demonstrate how incarceration impacts the entire family. Through this presentation
participants will hear first-hand stories on how to overcome the struggles on incarceration. Presenters will
share innovative strategies to connect and strengthen families through the prison experience to produce
strong, healthy, thriving families.
Jennifer Ntia, The RIDGE Project Co-Director for the North Region and NE Family Programming Coordinator,
Blake Tijerina, son of The RIDGE Project founders Ron and Catherine Tijerina
In her role with The RIDGE Project, Ms. Ntia brings connection to inmates and their families through
innovative programming, case management, and coordination of family interaction events. At four years
old Mr. Tijerina’s future took an unexpected turn when his father was incarcerated for a crime that he
didn’t commit. The next fifteen years would be marked by fatherlessness, poverty, and bouts of asthma
that kept him inside for weeks at a time. Mr. Tijerina turned to movies and media as a distraction from his
circumstances and as amusement to fill his time. He now uses his gift to encourage and empower those
affected by incarceration and generational poverty as the media development and video production
manager at The RIDGE Project.

A Inside-Out: Innovation in Education Within the Criminal Justice System
The Inside-Out Exchange Program is a program that takes students on the outside to learn on the inside of
prison walls with incarcerated students. The program provides the opportunity for a transformative learning
experience for all participants. Westminster College offered its first Inside-Out course in the spring of 2015
at Trumbull Correctional Institution. Join the presenters for a discussion of the philosophy and structure of
the program and the community building potential of the program.
Kristenne M. Robison, Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies,
Panayiotis Constantine, Gretchen Schwarz and Britt Mavric, students, Westminster College
Ms. Robison has been teaching college courses in prison since 2011. Her research and teaching interests
include innovations in prisons. Mr. Constantine is a Sociology major with a Psychology minor. He is the
Student Government President and is also involved with a number of other campus organizations. Ms.
Schwarz is a Psychology major with a Criminal Justice Studies minor. Her undergraduate research includes
weapon focus effect and eyewitness test as well as perceived parental support, optimism, and coping in
adolescents. She participated in the Inside-Out Program with Trumbull Correctional Institution. Ms. Mavrich
is a Criminal Justice Studies major with minors in International Studies and Psychology. She is building
towards becoming a Pennsylvania state trooper, wanting to build communities not patrol them.
4B Financial Literacy: Credit & Money Management
In this session, participants will learn how to achieve key components of financial stability: establishing or
increasing a credit score; creating a budget; increasing savings; starting an emergency fund; and reducing
debt.
Christopher Smith, Small Business Development Program Coordinator for Operation HOPE
Mr. Christopher E. Smith is a social entrepreneur, small business development consultant, and graphic
designer. His entrepreneurial experiences began in college competing in several business plan competitions
across the nation. Working for Operation HOPE, Mr. Smith helps individuals develop business plans and
launch small businesses as well as provide credit and money management counseling. With experience
working in all sectors he’s found that stewardship, entrepreneurship, and strengthening the human capital
in our inner cities to be key components of creating sustainable communities.
4C ODRC’s Approach to Restrictive Housing
In anticipation of further changes to Restrictive Housing (sometimes referred to as solitary confinement)
on a national level, Ohio has worked to holistically examine how offenders are placed and managed in these
environments. Mr. Voorhies will present a summary of the pro-active approach ODRC continues to take with
evaluating and altering Restrictive Housing within Ohio’s prisons.

5A Positive Youth Development as an Effective Prevention Strategy: MyCom
The MyCom network connects Greater Cleveland’s young people with high-quality, neighborhood based
programs and services that provide engaging, educational and affordable opportunities in a safe and
supportive environment helping them to grow, thrive and reach their true potential. MyCom was created
by the Cleveland Foundation and Cuyahoga County in collaboration with other partners in 2008. The
panelists are all long term MyCom partners who have been incorporating best practices for positive youth
development strategies into their communities with great success. They really have a lot to share!
Dr. Adriennie Hatten, Ph.D., moderator
Dr. Hatten is the Principal Investigator and President of A.Y. Hatten & Associates where her portfolio of
projects includes performance management, evaluation, report writing and strategic analysis. Dr. Hatten
brings an extensive background in nonprofit management, government and education to every project she
engages in as well as to every group of learners she encounters, personally and professionally.
5B MAGI Medicaid
This presentation will provide information about the eligibility and income changes to Medicaid through
the Affordable Health Care Act. MAGI – Modified Adjusted Gross Income – is a new definition of income
created under the Affordable Health Care Act. Its calculation is standardized across the country. The
presentation will also include a summary of the various access points to apply for benefits and the process
for organizations and individuals to access services at Cuyahoga Job and Family Services (CJFS).
Aida Idiaquez, Manager of the Office of Community Engagement in the Cuyahoga Job and Family Services,
Work First Services Division
Prior to beginning her employment with Cuyahoga Job and Family Services in 2006, Ms. Idiaquez worked
in various roles at the NYC Department of Homeless Services and as Senior Project Planner at the NYC
Office of the Mayor. Ms. Idiaquez holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowling Green State University and
a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and
Policy at SUNY, Albany. She also holds professional certificates from the Key Women’s Leadership Academy
awarded by the Key Foundation and the Career Executive Service Program awarded by the Center for
Leadership Development at Cleveland State University.
5B Right Now Check
The Right Now Check speaks on the reality of an individual being prepared to capitalize on opportunity
when presented. This preparation is done before the opportunity presents itself. If the Right Now Check is
strong enough, it will overcome the Back Ground Check.
Carlos Christian
At age 13, Carlos Christian became involved in the drug trade-eventually leading to a 10-year prison
sentence beginning at age 19. While serving his sentence, Christian dedicated himself to his rehabilitation
and becoming a positive role model. While incarcerated he furthered his education and his training.
Upon his release, Mr. Christian had support from his friends, family, and a case manager. He obtained
employment, relocated to Columbus, became a homeowner, gained custody of his son, and began to mentor
currently incarcerated individuals in penitentiaries and county jails. Mr. Christian founded the Starts Within
Organization (SWO) in 2011 because of his determination to help currently incarcerated men build the
same solid foundation he was able to build. SWO is based on the principal that individuals must start within
themselves and start within their current situations.

6A Mi$$ion Admi$$ion – Adult Transition to Postsecondary Education
This presentation addresses how to navigate ex-offenders to continue on to higher education. Participants
will explore the steps to prepare and succeed in their education endeavor. They will learn the tools needed
to guide them to attain the certification they desire.
Stacy Watts, Resource Center Manager, College Now Greater Cleveland
Ms. Watts previously served College Now Greater Cleveland as the senior high school advisor, adult learner
advisor, assistant manager and advisor of the Early Awareness Program. She served at The Great Lakes
Science Center as the Interim Director of Education for one year and Assistant Director of Education for
three years. At College Now, Ms. Watts oversees the Resource Center that serves all high school and adults
in the Northeast Ohio region with outreach programs, workshops and counseling. Ms. Watts is a cum laude
graduate of Bowling Green State University.
6B The 8 Week Fatherhood Initiative Program in Summit County
The presentation will include soft job skills, understanding yourself and anger management and how to be
responsible young men. There will be discussion on putting hope back into the hopeless and building selfesteem and skills to work in harmony with others. We will discuss what it means to be a real man - learning
that being a man is not being a dictator.
Frank D. Williams, President and CEO Man2Man Fatherhood Initiative
Mr. Williams retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as a skilled tradesman after 36 years
of service. Mr. Williams lives out his passion of service by volunteering for causes near and dear to him
personally. His past volunteer service includes: 5 years with Akron Reads, 2 years with Akron Summit
Community Action Agency (helping them to establish an initiative to equip men to become better fathers),
and 8 years as a Grief Recovery Facilitator. In 1999, he founded the Williams Challenge Foundation which
funds scholarships for low income high school seniors. His current community service includes: Prison
Ministry with Cleveland Plain Dealer sports writer Terry Pluto (15 years) and volunteer for the Akron First
Tee Golf Program. Frank is a Fatherhood Initiative Master Trainer and spends much of his personal and
professional time mentoring young men in a variety of capacities.
6C It Makes a Difference: FAMILY INVOLVEMENT
This presentation is dedicated to emphasizing the importance of family involvement and successful
community reentry. Both presenters will discuss programs geared toward educating families on being the
“right help” to assist their love ones with making healthy choices, reducing risk of recidivism and relapse.
Information will be provided to encourage families to continuing participating in supportive services in the
community.
Wendy A. Caldwell, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III (LCDCIII),
Jim Joyner, Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor Clinical Supervisor (LiCDC-CS)
Ms. Caldwell has an extensive background working in field of addiction, specializing in serving the criminal
justice population. Ms. Caldwell has been employed with the State of Ohio for approximately 28 years,
with 17 of those years dedicated to the substance abuse intervention. Ms. Caldwell developed a program
to create a dialogue between the Adult Parole Authority and the family members of formerly incarcerated
citizens called Family Connections. Mr. Joyner has over 43 years of professional experience working in
the field of alcohol and other drug prevention, treatment and recovery services. He currently serves as
President of the Ohio Association of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselors (OAADAC) and Chairman of
the Greater Cleveland Municipal Drug Court Advisory Board. He is founder and director of Joyner and
Associates LLC which provides intervention, consultation, counseling and training services for those
impacted by a loved one’s abuse or addictive use of alcohol or other drugs.

Norm Mulder
Norm Mulder is the founder of TOPUCU. As an entrepreneur, civic leader, and passionate student of
leadership, Norm Mulder brings his lifetime of experience as the founder of TOPUCU. He is a Vietnam
Veteran who served faithfully with the United Sates Army. Upon returning from his military service, Norm
became a firefighter/paramedic with the City of Bay Village, OH. During this time he successfully launched
and sold his first business, which led him into financial planning. Thirty-five years later he is an owner and
National Sales Director with Primerica overseeing 91 offices and over 1,200 agents. He serves on multiple
nonprofit boards helping facilitate community and life transformation across the U.S.
PLAYING IT SAFE IN YOUR CYBERHOOD: What You Don’t Know about the Internet Can Hurt You
The popular presentation is geared toward middle and high school students that teaches the dangers of
instant messaging, mobile apps, sexting, cyberbullying and more. Paired with real life tales of ICAC cases,
this presentation is great for children and teens.
Leah D. Hudnall
The Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is a federal anti-crime initiative funded by the U.S.
Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. It is a collaboration of
city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies across Ohio whose mission is to identify, arrest
and prosecute individuals who use the Internet to exploit children. Ms. Hudnall serves as the Community
Outreach Coordinator for the task force.

Roxanne Hammond
Roxanne Hammond is the Founder and CEO of Game Plan Scholars, a youth development program that uses
professional sports and healthy competition to help young people establish a “game plan” to succeed. She
strongly believes that we can revive our communities by investing in today’s youth. Ms. Hammond holds a
Bachelor’s degree in Business Education & Computer Engineering.
