Class of 2016 Graduation Ceremony at The English
School of Kyrenia
On Saturday 25th June, The English School of Kyrenia (ESK) held its graduation
ceremony for the class of 2016. The ceremony, held in the school’s Great Hall,
began with the procession of graduates followed by inspirational speeches and the
presentation of diplomas.
The thirteen graduates have just completed their A-Level or IB Diploma studies
and are departing for university. The majority of students are heading to UK
universities to study courses spanning Law, Neuroscience, Mechanical
Engineering, Political Science, Economics and Business Management. Students
have received offers from universities including University College, London (UCL),
Newcastle University, Birmingham University and The University of Kent in the UK
as well as Leiden University in Holland and Monash University in Melbourne,
Australia.
The school was also pleased to announce that two of the graduates have received
EU scholarship funds of 15,000 Euros each.
Fehim Nevzat, founding director of The English School of Kyrenia, said that the
inspiration for ESK came from the work of
his late father Hasan Nevzat. Hasan
Nevzat had been a teacher and boarding
house master at the English School in
Nicosia but had to leave his post when
community troubles escalated in 1963.
Hasan Nevzat, along with a group of
committed teachers set up a new school
so that the education of the Turkish
Cypriot students would not be disrupted.
Students and staff brought chairs and
tables from home to furnish make-shift
classrooms. The school developed and
later became the state English language
school – TMK. Fehim Nevzat asked the
students to always remember their
responsibility to their families but also to
themselves. He repeated a favourite
saying: ‘the best helping hand you will
ever receive is the one at the end of your
arm!’
After the ceremony the graduates moved
to the school’s front-steps for the
traditional throwing of their mortar board
hats.

Hello to all of the students, parents, and staff of
The English School of Kyrenia,
There is so much to read and enjoy in this edition of the Newsletter. I regularly note that so
much that is of ultra-high quality is taking place at the school, and the articles and photographs reinforce this. Having been here for three years I wanted to record a comparison to
schools both within the UK and world-wide, as ESK is authentically what it states, ‘an exceptional school’. The school was founded not as yet another independent school in North Cyprus, but to be the most academically successful school here, one expert in positioning its
students to enter great universities world-wide and have highly successful careers.
Science and maths instruction in the school is very strong and perhaps overlooked on occasion. Our considerable investment in laboratory facilities allows us to have a healthy proportion of instruction based on laboratory
work, and I was so impressed as I pulled out last year’s KS4 results in IGCSE which that I’ve shown them in the

I’m aware that we haven’t shown these comparisons before, so it is timely to remind one another that we are
an exceptional school when it comes to academic achievement, and we have a huge amount to be proud of.
Hot off the press our Cambridge Y6 Results were the very best in the history of the school, and exceptional in a
global context with averages all above a category of very good in English, maths, and science. Not many
schools could match this in the UK!
Enjoy the newsletter,

The English School of Kyrenia’nın tüm öğrencilerine, velilerine, ve
personeline merhaba,

Keyifli okumalar.

Able, Gifted and Talented (A, G&T) Certificate Awards ceremony –1st February 2015
By Bruce Wiltshire, ESK Secondary Science Teacher
At the ESK secondary assembly on Monday 1st February 2016, 44 Students were presented with Able,
Gifted and Talented (A, G&T) certificates by Dr Altay Nevzat, Deputy Head of the Secondary School.
Many parents attended the awards ceremony and they were welcomed and thanked for their support
by the Principal Hector MacDonald.
These 44 students form the first cohort of pupils to be presented with this prestigious award. ESK has
introduced the A, G&T scheme so that pupils that satisfy the rigorous criteria for selection, are exposed to additional educational and pastoral experiences so that they can eventually be targeted at
the top-end of the range of universities and educational institutions worldwide.
The overall ethos of the English School of Kyrenia is to teach and nurture all students, so that they
can reach their academic potential as they pass through the school. As part of this, the school aims to
be world-class in the provision of a range of additional activities, to ensure that all students are ‘well
rounded’ and ready to study at any university/further educational establishment in the world, when
they depart from the school.

parts of their body.
The winners for this year’s Bookface Competition were:
Aylin Ayyildiz (9S), Aydan Nevzat (7E) and Eliz Demirag (7E).
Congratulations!

Leadership Workshops – 15-17 February 2016
By Kati Taherzadeh, ToK Coordinator
From Monday 15th to Wednesday 17th February, ESK hosted a series of leadership workshops designed and delivered by the Mr Eric Liddel, a director of the world renowned organisation TFL Education.
Students in Years 9, 10 & 12 participated in the bespoke workshops designed to teach them skills
which employers say are sorely lacking in the graduate employment market. The skills practised
ranged from communication and problem-solving, to motivation, inclusiveness and taking the lead.
Year 9 students showed exemplary communication and problem-solving skills in a variety of activities
which were deeply engaging, challenging and fun. Mr Eric Liddel said that he could identify a number
of budding leaders amongst our students, and interestingly, several who were unaware of their own
potential.
For our Year 10 & 12 students approaching university applications, the advantages of such practical
and professionally-endorsed workshops are tangible and will no doubt distinguish them from others in
their age group around the world.
All students who participated will receive participation certificates, endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute in London. The CMI has echoed the need for awareness and skills that should be
taught to students in order to make them employable.
This is the third year that ESK has offered these leadership workshops to our students. In fact, the
benefit of these workshops was so apparent to us, that we have integrated a year-long module as part
of our curricula in Years 7 & 8 this year and also Year 9 from September 2016.

METU Visit – 26 February 2016
By Yousef Hajikarimian, Secondary Science Teacher
A total of 50 students from year 11 and year 10 who take Physics and Chemistry as part of their core
science subjects at IGCSE were treated to a spectacular day of interactive Sience and Technology
demostration and experiments at Mid East Technical University on Fridays 26th Feb and 11th March.
The visit was organised by Mr Yousef Hajikarimian of the ESK Science department in collaboration
with Professor Shikakhwa of Mid East Technical University. The purpose is to promote science at ESK
and to enthuse our students in the understanding and application of science. We are also intending
to establish links with other universities in the island which can offer understanding in other areas of
science.
The day started with arrivaing at METU Science & Technology centre at 10 a.m. After a brief
introduction by the staff at the centre the students found themselves immersed in a variety of hands
on activities all involving questions , answers and lots of thinking. After a two hour session at the
centre, the students were able to visit a number of technology departments , the sports complex,
lecture theatres , library and halls of residence.
The visit was brought to conclusion by having lunch at the Ala Carte restaurant followed by thanking
the METU staff who made this fun trip possible for our students.
We are grateful to the staff at METU who made this possible for our science students.

Y3 Students Share their Ideas for the New ESK Website-23 March 2016
By ESK News
As part of their informative writing development, students from Mrs Reece’s English language class
had a special challenge this week. They were visited by Mr Irfan Nevzat, Director of HR and PR to discuss the purposes of a school website. The children had some very perceptive ideas which left Mr
Nevzat deeply impressed.
The next challenge was for the class to think of information and content that they believed would be
suitable for the website. Mrs Reece and the class then voted on the top four ideas for the winners to
present to Mr Nevzat in the school offices. On the morning of Wednesday, March 23 rd 2016, Kerem,
Una, Nisa and Anna had a meeting with Mr Nevzat. Suggestions included a summary of the school
age range, the presence of Teachers and Teaching assistants. The Lunch Menu was a popular choice
as were maps and school trips. The children were pleased to discover that much of this information
was already on the new school website and Mr Nevzat showed them the news section which had photos and a story of Year 3’s recent Roman Performance. Mr Nevzat also showed the children how the
website is edited and new information is posted online.

Y3 Romans Performance – 4 & 5 February 2016
By Catherine Farquharson, Y3 Teacher
The Year 3 ‘Revolting Romans’ Performance took place in February. 3R and 3M performed first on
Thursday 4th February and 3F and 3L took to the stage on Friday 5th February. The children really
enjoyed performing. They looked splendid in their costumes and the singing was fantastic. The play
involved scenes of Roman road building, Roman soldiers and an Emperor attending a Roman feast.
Our audiences particularly enjoyed learning about the revolting Romans table manners!

By Özlem Cihan, ESK Library Media Centre
Students from classes 4B and 5DX joined forces to
make the ESK Library a beautiful display for World
Book Day. The display, which read “Get your hand
on a good book”, was decorated with the students’
hand prints designed with their own unique style.
You can see the display hanging next to the Library
door.

International Sports Tournament - 15 January 2016
By Craig Reece, Head of PE Department
The PE department hosted schools from Istanbul and Ankara either side of the New Year and I would
like to thank everyone involved in setting up the event. The children really appreciated it and were rewarded for their hard work as The ESK Boys Basketball Team and ESK Boys Football Teams came out
tournament winners. The Girls teams narrowly missed out on winning the tournament by goal difference. The Year 5 and 6 boys slept at school but the year 7, 8 and 9 students hosted a child from Turkey and they slept over in their house. Hopefully this will build a friendship for a long time.
This is the final tournament that ESK will be hosting this year as the schools in Turkey have offered to
host when the weather gets better over there in June.

Y5 Doğanköy Mosque Trip – 20 January 2016
By Samantha Dix, Y5 Teacher
In Year 5 we have been learning all about the religion of Islam in our Religious Education lessons. We
were lucky enough to be able to go to see a working mosque. After a walk down to the mosque at
Dogankoy, learning a bit of road safety on the way, we met the Imam and a few others who kindly
showed us the washing ritual of Wudu – this is where you wash yourself in preparation for entering
the mosque. We were surprised at what the Mosque looked like on the inside, although we all pass
this mosque regularly we hadn’t been inside. We had to take off our shoes and the girls had to make
sure that their hair was covered with a scarf as a mark of respect; we also had to make sure that
when we entered the mosque we used our right foot first. We managed to identify many of the features inside a mosque. The Imam answered all of the questions that we had about the mosque, the
Islamic faith and many more. We were also lucky enough to hear the Imam perform the Adhan – the
call to prayer. The Imam and the community at the mosque gave us some English Qu’rans to look at
and keep in school. Thank you to Imam and the community for being so welcoming and allowing us to
look around their special place, the mosque.

World Poetry Day at ESK – 21 March 2016
By Ken Lovesy, Head of Secondary Languages
The School was honoured to have as participant guests two of Cyprus’ most noted poets, Gür Genç and Stephanos Stephanides, the
first a writer in Turkish and a translator, the second a writer in English
and an academic at the University of Cyprus.
In front of the whole school they were the final acts in a memorable
assembly devoted to poetry that started with poetry in French and
Afrikaans (with translations in English on the large screen behind)
and went on to Performance Poetry in English and then finished
memorably with some of the poetry of our guests, Gür Genç’s poetry
in English translation on the screen and one of Stephanos’ poems.
There was a striking intensity and refreshing emotional honest in all
of the work. Our applause was long and sincere.
Our guests then went to one of the classrooms where they talked
about their lives and their poetry in front of a large group of Year Eleven and Year Twelve students and some teachers. Some of the poems either directly or indirectly deal
with the Cyprus situation and, of course, their very presence together speaks volumes of the kind of
stances they adopt. The intensity of the experience in a gathering of thirty people was profound.
Hopefully this special day will just be the beginning of more poetry recitations and indeed some good
poetry writing in School with House Competitions and the like already being planned.

Y2 Florence Nightingale Day – 22 March 2016
By Kathryn Hannay, Y2 Teacher
On Tuesday the 22nd of March Year 2 had a whole day of activities linked to their Florence Nightingale
topic. The children came dressed up as nurses, soldiers, wounded soldiers or doctors and took a tour
of the school, made medals and had a lovely role-play session in the playground which had been converted into Scutari hospital. Year 2 was also lucky enough to have a visit from the 112 volunteers who
showed them how to bandage broken arms and cover cuts. It was a lovely day and all the children
thoroughly enjoyed themselves putting into practice their learning over the term by cleaning out the
rats and ensuring all the bandages they were playing with were clean of germs!

Theatre Masterclasses for KS3 and GCSE Students - 21 March 2016
By Charlie Inskip, Head of Secondary Drama
The Secondary Drama Department marked this year’s World Theatre
Day by celebrating with special workshops and performances on
March 21st 2016.
Drama students in Years 8 & 9 were joined by the Year 10 GCSE Drama group and were treated to some fantastic workshops led by Mohammed Awwad, who is originally from Palestine and is a Theatre
Practitioner and an Actor. He is the creator of Clown in Education
(CiE), and trains volunteers on the use of Clowning as a method of
social inclusion and Creativity in educating youngsters, working extensively in the EU and the Middle East.
Mohammed led the students in developing ensemble work and learning to use space effectively, as well as teaching them some excellent
rehearsal techniques and focus games. He also did a brilliant activity
where students had to ‘send’ different objects around a circle, adding more items until some people lost track!
Mohammed’s enthusiasm and joie de vivre were apparent throughout each of his sessions, and students left their lessons with nothing but praise. We were very grateful that he took the time to join us
and extend our thanks that he joined us. We are also very excited that Mohammed has said that he
would love to come back and do more with us in the future!

Directing Masterclass for A Level Drama Students – 21 March 2016
By Charlie Inskip, Head of Secondary Drama
The Secondary Drama Department marked this
year’s World Theatre Day by celebrating with special
workshops and performances on March 21st 2016.
Our A Level students were fortunate to be visited by
the world-renowned German Director, Achim Wieland, who came and gave a Masterclass on directing
Georg Buchner’s play Woyzeck (the A2 written exam
set text).
Wieland has directed Woyzeck twice and shared the
process he went through when developing the productions, as well as discussing key moments with
the students. They were also treated to video clips of Woyzeck and able to ask questions about staging and idea development for a director’s interpretation of a play.
Students were clearly enthused by the Masterclass and afterwards spoke about how valuable the session was for them. Unfortunately, there wasn’t time for Achim to discuss his current production, Fear
Industry, that is touring Europe at the moment; but school representatives were delighted to be able
to attend the Nicosia performance the same week as his visit.
We were honoured that Achim Wieland was able to journey to ESK and talk to our Drama students
with such passion. We extend our deepest thanks to him and hope he will be able to return again next
year.

ESK Success in the French Language Competition – 13 May 2016
By Stephanie Corbel, Secondary French Language Teacher
Every year the French Institute of Cyprus organises an interschool competition divided into two
categories: KS3 (ortaokul) and KS4&5 (lise). This year the pupils were asked to design a poster and
write in French about the common values in sport and Francophonie (French speaking countries).
In the first category 3 groups from ESK out of 30 got selected for the final and 2 out of 17 in the
second category.
The final took place on the 13th of May at Arabahmet Kultur Evi in Nicosia. Like last year it has been
a great success (ESK came first in both categories).
In KS3 category Hazal Say and Zeynep Todd came first followed by Cansu Kutay and Yasmin Avdji
who came second. Tufan Kombos and Suzan Ozsoykal came 6th.
In KS4&5 category Ergul Andir and Eylul Kavaz came second and Beril Kayaalp and Sine Ozkarasahin
came third. The winners each got a tablet.
Fransızca Dil Yarışması’nda ESK Başarısı - 13 Mayıs 2016
Yazan Stephanie Corbel, Ortaokul-Lise Fransızca Öğretmeni
Kıbrıs Türk Fransız Kültür Derneği’nin her yıl düzenlediği okullararası yarışmada öğrenciler iki

Dance Club: Ballet, Tap, Modern, Street dance and Cheerleading!
By Stephanie Hudson, Kyrenia Dance Academy
It has been a busy few weeks in class, as the children prepare for the end of year show to be held in June.
Year One and Two ballet and tap class will be performing
routines to a soundtrack from Disney's Tangled and from the
musical 'Singing in the Rain'.
Wednesday's Tap/Modern class will be performing two routines with pop music backing tracks and tap routines from
Copacobana and the American Bandstand.
Thursday's Cheerleaders will be performing a routine to '
Your Lips are Movin' and Friday's street dancers will perform
routine to two pop chart hits.
All children have shown an increased ability to follow routines at speed, whilst adapting moves to their individual
style, as well as an increased confidence in their own physical ability. All routines involve working closely together as a
team and developing a stronger, more aligned body.
At the end of year show there will be a presentation of certificates, medals and a trophy. All children
are marked on their effort each week.
I look forward to seeing you at the show!

World Theatre Day Celebrations – 21 March 2016
By Ayla Rose Say, Y12 IB Theatre Student
On 21 March 2016 we celebrated World Theatre Day
at ESK (slightly early because it was due to happen
on Sunday 27th March, when we were on holiday).
After school four performances took place in the
Great Hall. Anar Kazimov and I each directed a piece
of theatre as part of our IB Theatre course. The one I
directed was a Greek play called “Prometheus
Bound”, based on the myth of Prometheus. I decided
to incorporate David Bowie’s music and costume into
the play as well. Prometheus was portrayed as a hero and his (her, in this case) face was painted with
Bowie’s iconic red lightning bolt.
Anar’s play was a slapstick comedy called “Pain
Scale”, and it centred on a professor teaching her
students about human pain tolerance. Ms Akin and
Ms Inskip directed a third piece, that was devised
with the students performing in it, called “Roots and
Wings” and inspired by the poem of the same name
by Denis Waitley. A group of Year 9 students also
performed as a guest performance titled “Little
Game”. This piece of dance theatre was outstanding
and even with the technical mishap, the continued
without missing a beat!
It was fun to take part in the World Theatre Day performances; they were small performances, but
they were representative of many different types of theatre. All of the participants did a fabulous job
and we hope that the audience enjoyed seeing some of what theatre has to offer.

World Book Day 2016 – 3 March 2016
By Nicky Dow, Y5 Teacher & Primary English Coordinator
This year the Primary students were invited to dress up as
their favourite character from a book. From Nursery
through to Year 6 we saw a wonderful selection of characters and some fantastic homemade costumes. Classes
took time to parade around the amphitheatre, following the
‘Pied Piper’, to display the selection of costumes…well
done everyone, there was a wonderful atmosphere created!
Following on from this Nursery parents were invited in to ‘Drop Everything And Read’ with their children for half an hour. The main school doors were open, for parents to ‘drop in’ until 12 o’clock, to
join their children in developing a ‘Fairy tale with a twist’. Students and parents worked together to
change the well-known ‘Cinderella’ adding a twist by changing one thing and rewriting the tale. There
were some wonderful alternative versions created.
Best Seller and Pengu Toys spent time running stalls, each class was given time to visit the stalls and
spend any pocket money they had brought with them…the representatives from the shops thank you
all for your support.
We hope that both the parents, who took time out of their busy schedules, and the students, enjoyed
their day to celebrate reading and books. Thank you for your commitment to making World Book Day
a success!

Y6 “Wizard of OZ” - 13 & 14 June 2016
By Müge Beyzade-Ӧzcan, Y6 Teacher & Primary Music Coordinator
There were lights, camera, action and plenty of green glitter during the Year 6 performances of the
famous story, ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The pupils performed for two nights to a mesmerised audience in
the ESK amphitheatre.
They told the story of Dorothy’s journey to the Land of Oz and the Emerald City, with her three new
found friends; Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion. They were all in search of something they desperately
needed and in the end found. Along the way they met the Merry Munchkins, Emerald City Folk and a
good witch called Glinda. Things however did not always go to plan as they came face to face with the
Wicked Witch of the West and her troop of Flying Monkeys.
The performances had the audiences entranced from start to finish, with the professionalism of the
children’s acting, singing and dancing skills. Congratulations also to the staff involved with the performances, as the attention to detail was noted and very well executed.
Here are some quotes from the audience:
‘….my family and I enjoyed the amazing performance of Wizard of Oz last night. We were truly
awestruck with it all. We went home singing and dancing….’
‘….I would like to tell you of my absolute heart bursting joy as I watched your show last night. I cried, I
laughed and I thoroughly enjoyed your wonderful show….’
‘….My family and I would like to thank you all for your incredibly hard work in putting on such a fabulous show…. Thank you again for a truly memorable and heartwarming evening….’

A Level Students’ Exam Performance of Antigone – 25 & 26 April 2016
By Charlie Inskip, Head of Secondary Drama
On Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th April 2016, the A
Level Drama students performed their fantastic production of Antigone.
Antigone is a Greek Tragedy that tells the tale of the
daughter of Oedipus, who seeks justice for her dead
brother by burying his body, going against the wishes
of Creon, the King.
The carefully cut piece was from the adaptation by
Jean Anouilh and included ensemble scenes as the
Chorus, as well as focusing on the roles of Antigone, (played by Fulya Aköz), her sister Ismene, (Beran
Özel), Creon, (Vedat Bakış) and the Nurse and Guard, (Benan Feray).
It was a demanding piece for the students to complete, but they more than rose to the challenge and
produced some emotionally driven and exceptionally acted performances. It was filmed for the examination board and has now been sent off to the UK to be marked by a moderator. We look forward to
seeing their results and want to commend them on their efforts this year.

Librarians in the Making - 13 Nisan 2016
By Judith Green, Primary Head Teacher
A group of Y6 pupils have shown their ability in organising and maintaining systems, in their new roles
as Reading Book Managers.
Mrs Green is thrilled to see how reliable these pupils have been in making sure that the library books
are kept tidy so that there is no time wasted by teachers looking for lost books when changing reading books.
The children have given up their lunch breaks to come and tidy the shelves and sort out any books
that are out of order or damaged.
As a reward for their commitment and hard work they are going to be given the chance to work with
the librarian to see first-hand how a library is run and organised.

IB Theatre Pop-up Butoh Event – 04 May 2016
By Charlie Inskip, Head of Secondary Drama
On Wednesday 4th May 2016 students and staff at
ESK were treated to a Pop-up Theatre event performed by the Year 12 IB Theatre class.
The IB Theatre students have been taking part in
practical workshops on Butoh (Japanese Dance Theatre) over the last couple of weeks. They then had to
write their own Butoh-fu and turn that into a performance piece, (‘butoh’ translates as dance experience in this context and ‘fu’ means notation – so
Butoh-fu are sentences that butoh artists write to stimulate their movement and choreography).
The piece that they created and performed was highly poetic and visually moving, and demonstrated
excellent focus and creativity. Two performances were completed during lunchtime and KS2 students
in particular made an excellent supportive audience, which gave the piece a stunning atmosphere.
It was fantastic to see students from the Primary school enjoying live Theatre performed by their Secondary counterparts, and is another example of the cross-key stage links that the Secondary Drama
Department have been proud to implement in the last two years. More of these events are planned in
the future as it was a great success all around.
Many thanks go to Ayla Say and Anar Kazimov for their passion and dedication to the course, as well
as gratitude to Ms Oya Akin for her fabulous photography of the event.

Stage-in-a-box! – 25 April 2016
By Charlie Inskip, Head of Secondary Drama
In the middle of April the Secondary Drama department took delivery of a fantastic new resource for
students. In its simplest form it is a box, but when it is opened it turns into a stage complete with
blocks, flats, lights and actors that you can pose. We have been eagerly awaiting its arrival, and it is
safe to say that everyone has been very excited to use it now it is here!
A Level and GCSE students have been creating fantastic designs for the drama texts they are studying
for exams, demonstrating excellent focus and teamwork. They are also developing their understanding of the process involved in Scenography, which is the study and practice of Performance Design.
Students have been enthused by the opportunity to be so creative with staging and have even devised ways of using lighting gels to create coloured lights. It has quickly become the most popular resource in the department, and we look forward to seeing how it can be used by future groups.

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh - 11 & 12 March 2016
By Craig Reece, Head of PE Department
ESK had 33 students take the challenge of completing the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. This involved a two day hike and one night camping expedition in the Tatlısu Mountains. During the first
practice expedition groups struggled to get their bearings on the map but once they got to the camp
site they settled well and cooked delicious home-cooked food. The second expedition is much harder
but groups took to the 16 mile hike with an assured confidence. After completing the whole expedition in record time they cleaned and tidied all equipment up and left the venue spotless.
I would like to congratulate the groups and in true Duke of Edinburgh fashion the leaders could visually see the teamwork, organization and maturity improving.

Handwriting Stars
By Judith Green, Primary Head Teacher
At ESK we are striving to ensure that our pupils do their very best
and present themselves and their work in the very best light. Ensuring that first in impressions of school work are the best they
can be; good handwriting and presentation are vital in achieving
this aim.
Pupils are invited to apply for a handwriting licence. Licences are
not easy to gain as handwriting in all work books has to be consistently good over a period of time. Pupils go to Mrs Green with their books and she looks back at
their work and decides whether the handwriting is good enough or not. A licence is rarely given on the
first visit but children are given advice on how to improve their handwriting and put right any errors
and invited to return as soon as they think they have achieved the targets.
Licences are given when the handwriting is:

Correctly formed and consistently joined

Letters are upright or if leaning, are regular in the angle
at which they lean.

Ascenders and descenders are clearly defined

A sharp HB pencil is used

Handwriting is of a regular size, not too big or too small.

The overall look of the page is neat and tidy.
Once the standard is achieved pupils are given a licence to carry
with them and allowed to write in pen in their school books.
Well done to all our handwriting superstars.

Playground Revamp – 11 May 2016
By Cemal Aktansoy and Francoise Aktash, School Council Leaders
The ESK School Council has upgraded the KS 2 (Y3-6) playground several weeks ago. Many new toys,
activities and games were introduced to the playground including a giant chess set, bowling, painting
and colouring, new balls and physical play equipment as well as a toy-car zone. Large equipment such
as easels, play-mats and carpets were also supplied in a bid to make lunch playtimes more enjoyable
for all. The playground was ‘zoned’ into different sections so that everyone knew which activities
could take place in which area. So far, the children have given very positive feedback about the
changes though several have remarked that they’re quickly having to re-learn their sharing skills. Several teachers have been seen enthusiastically joining in with some of the games; the skipping has
been particularly popular with some. There are further plans in place to continue improving the playground areas next year in a wide variety of ways. We would also like to give a massive thank you to Mr
Roberts for all his effort and exceptional ideas.

WOW Fashion Show 2016 - 16 June 2016
By Linda Hurley, Secondary Art Teacher
The ESK Art Department presented a ‘WOW – World of Wearable Art’ Fashion Show
on Thursday, 16th June 2016. The event took place from 8pm – 9pm in the ESK
Amphitheatre and refreshments were served in the school Reception area from
8pm – 8.25pm. Students showcased and modelled their Art/Textiles designs and
Drama and Music students performed specially prepared pieces.
Y12 student Kayra Şadi organised the event as part of the internationally recognised ‘Extended Project Qualification’. This was an important programme followed
by ESK students which helped them develop and demonstrate a range of valuable
skills. Universities worldwide praise this qualification as it guides students into
higher education. It requires a high degree of planning, preparation and autonomous working.

Disability Awareness - 10 June 2016
It is with many thanks to our special guests Mr
Alper Ali and Ms Ruhsar Vudalı that our
“Awareness Day” began with such thought provoking and eye opening speeches.
Hosted and organised by ESK’s Primary Student
Council, our assembly heard how Mr Ali overcame his disability, how he went on even though
being paralysed from the age of three, to swim
the English Channel and receive a bronze model
for weightlifting at the Paralympic games. He was
a true inspiration to all of our students. Ms Vudalı
represented her charity K.T. Ortopedik Özürlüler
Derneği, and explained how the charity helps
those in need. She also shared how overwhelmed she was with the ESK students for the effort they
were making for the charity and to raise disability awareness.
The assembly came to a close with an emotional rendition of ‘True Colours’ sang and signed by all of
the KS2 students and their teachers.
The afternoon followed with more activities and lessons where our children learned more about disabilities and the accomplishments made by those with a disability. Some even took part in their own
Paralympic games!
Our guests were amazed and grateful for the effort that our ESK children had given to this special
day, and were pleased to be a part of it.
Our student councillors continued to work tirelessly throughout the day, and indeed for many days after, selling Minion toys with the slogan ‘Let’s give them a Minion reasons to smile’, with ALL profits
being donated to K.T. Ortopedik Özürlüler Derneği.
We are so very proud of our student councillors who sold 550 Minions, raising a staggering
4007.30TL, a super effort and one that was much needed.
Well done to all involved, and a BIG thank you to all of the parents and friends who supported us.

Y6 Amazing African Artwork- 10 May 2016
By Aiden Roberts, Y6 Teacher & Assistant Primary Head
Teacher
This term the Year 6 students have created a wonderful
set of art-work which is linked to their Africa topic work.
Each class has studied specific areas and the combined
results are spectacular.
Miss King’s class have produced some truly unique African masks using papier-mache and a selection of everyday objects, they designed their masks carefully and then
began constructing them, a process which has taken several sessions due to the complexity of their designs. The traditional style was bought to life by the
careful selection of colours used to complete them.
Mrs Beyzade-Özcan’s class have produced some stunning print work using a selection of techniques,
styles and colours. These demonstrate the uniqueness of the African style and have created a stunning display.
Finally, aided by the creative knowledge of Mrs Turan, class 6R produced two large window paintings
of a traditional African safari scene. These huge canvas paintings cover the two rear classroom windows and the effect of the light shining through them is breath-taking.
Thanks to all of Year 6 for their effort and attention to detail during this wonderful work.

Science Week at ESK – 13-18 June 2016
By Samantha Dix, Primary Science Coordinator
ESK’s third Science week took place 13th–18th
June. Children enjoyed a whole day of science
experimenting dressed up as real scientists and
took part in a variety of chemistry, biology and
physics investigations, in their ‘labs’ for the day,
some parents even joined in on the fun!
Children from Year 2 – 6 also had the opportunity to take part in some science
master classes, which the secondary science department kindly ran throughout the week. Master classes ranged from bubbles to plant identification.
Every lunch time throughout the week, Miss Dix, supported by her super star
scientists, set up and ran pop up science experiments that other children
could try. They all did a fantastic job!
To finish off the week children submitted their own science fair projects that
they completed at home for judging. All
children worked so very hard on their
projects and made it very difficult for the
judging panel to pick just one winner per
year group.
All children and teaching staff worked so very hard to make it an amazing Science Week. Thank you also to all the secondary staff who gave up their time to
make it happen. We are all already looking forward to the next one!

BLINK - 17 June 2016
By Ayla Say, Y12 Student
On Friday 17 June 2016, Anar Kazimov and I (Ayla Say) performed
our adaptation of Blink (Phil Porter). We had spent several months
working on the play: acting in it, directing it, and designing the
sound/lighting, costumes, and set. The week before and the week of
the show, we sold tickets for the play and raised around 600TL,
which we will donate to Kyrenia Animal Rescue.
Our idea for the play was to emphasise the relationship that the two
main (and only) characters, Sophie and Jonah, have. Specifically, we
wanted to show how their online relationship develops into a more
stalker-victim relationship as the play continues. To do this, we carefully selected the scenes we wanted to include in our adaptation. For
example, we chose: the scene where Jonah realises where Sophie
lives, the scene where Jonah admits to watching Sophie through the
screen all day long, and Sophie’s death scene (it is implied that it is
Jonah’s fault).
We spent a lot of time rehearsing, but it was really worth it. The performance of Friday went very well,
thanks to Sonja’s help in the tech booth. She controlled the lighting, music, and sound effects that we
had designed, and really helped all our ideas come to life. We really enjoyed performing and directing
the piece, as well as raising money for KAR. We are especially thankful to our audience for attending,
to Ms Akin for taking photographs of our performance, and to Mrs Inskip for always encouraging us
and being such an amazing drama teacher.

Yazan Sibel Limberg, Anahata Yoga Cyprus Eğitmeni
The English School of Kyrenia'ya okul-sonrası kulüp derslerinde, yogaya gösterdikleri ilgiden dolayı çok
